particularly those who voted for the opposition parties saying their move helped in deepening democracy in the country Reaching out to the youths he said Now to you the young people of this country I hear you loud and clear I understand your pains and your yearnings for good governance a functional economy and a safe nation that protects you and your future Tinubu said he and Shettima understood Presidential election He said as democrats the parties must set their grievances aside and focus on building the nation No matter how provocative a defeat is we still have to tolerate it because we are democrats and we are trying to build a nation Mr Tinubu said when he visited the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari retd at his private residence in Daura Katsina State late Wednesday However Tinubu who was in Daura to present his certificate of return to his soon to be predecessor urged the parties to focus on building the nation I came to present the certificate of return to him Buhari as the party leader and commend his efforts in supporting democracy in Africa This is the largest democracy in Africa and he couldn t have done any better We are lucky there is no incident there is no accident and no matter how provocative a defeat is we still have to tolerate it because we are democrats and we are trying to build a nation he said He described Buhari as a loyal party leader who is willing and committed to transferring power peacefully Tinubu said Well the calmness and commitment and the fact that after voting he taught us again dedication to our party by displaying his ballot papers loyalty to the party and being ready to create a future for all of us And no matter how tempting the problem of democracy is he is following the process building a successor and ready to hand over peacefully you know in Africa it s a big deal you know The former Lagos State governor also said he had received countless congratulatory messages from world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron He also noted that the stock market was reacting positively to his victory Oh I have received very many many of that In fact as far as Europe the stock market reacted positively well there was a goodwill message from Macron the President of France Tinubu said But smarting from the loss the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party Datti Baba Ahmed vowed that the LP would contest the outcome of the polls that produced the president elect He made the pledge at a press conference held at the party s national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday Baba Ahmed stated that LP was determined to fight the injustice that dashed the hope of distraught Nigerians through all legal and peaceful means This is as the LP presidential campaign council claimed that the manner the electoral commission hurriedly announced the results and gave out certificates of return to both Tinubu and Shettima reeks of collusion Addressing journalists he decried that the election did not meet the minimum standard as prescribed by INEC guidelines and the Electoral Act 2022 He said It is our position that the purported result did not meet the minimum criteria of a transparent free and fair election In addition to the most condemnable attacks violence voter intimidation and suppression the election was conducted in clear violation of agreed and promised INEC rules and guidelines the Electoral Act 2002 as amended and indeed the Nigerian Constitution As evident the institutions of the state and leaders that were supposed to ensure the sanctity of the election again and as in the past collaborated and colluded to subvert the will of the good people of Nigeria Please be assured of our determination to fight the injustice that has been perpetrated on Nigerians through all legal and peaceful means While painful we implore you to please remain peaceful and calm As our fight and determination for a New Nigeria are just beginning we equally encourage you all to continue with the campaigns and vote massively for Labour Party in the forthcoming governorship and state house of Assembly election on Saturday 11th March 2023 Our Principal His Excellency Mr Peter Obi will in due course speak to you all and indeed the nation On Tinubu s call for a unity government Tanko said that the party was not interested in his offer He added We said that we are going to court We are not interested in discussing anything on the government of national unity What we have so far resolved is to head to the court for redress Also the PDP presidential campaign council vowed to walk the whole distance to retrieve what it called the stolen mandate of its candidate Atiku A spokesman for the PDP PCC Senator Dino Melaye while appealing to injustice shall not stand The battle to retrieve our stolen mandate is a battle of no retreat no surrender We shall overcome Reacting to Tinubu s victory in a statement by his spokesman Garba Shehu on Wednesday Buhari declared that he is the best man for the job promising to work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power He stated The election was Africa s largest democratic exercise In a region that has undergone backsliding and military coups in recent years this election demonstrates democracy s continued relevance and capability to deliver for the people it serves Within Nigeria the results reveal democracy s ripening in our country Never has the electoral map shifted so drastically in one cycle In the presidential elections states in all regions across the nation changed colour Some of you may have noticed my home state among them The winning candidate did not carry his own home state either That happens during a competitive election Votes and those that cast them cannot be taken for granted Each must be earned Competition is good for our democracy There is no doubt that people s decision has been rendered in the results we look at today Noting that some parties and candidates may not agree with his view the President urged anyone who disagreed with the results to go to court He added If any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them then bring forward the evidence If they cannot then we must conclude that the election was indeed the people s will no matter how hard that may be for the losers to accept If they feel the need to challenge please take it to the courts not to the streets However to do the latter means they are not doing it in the interest of the people but rather to inflame to put people in harm s way and all for personal selfish gains After a degree of polarization that necessarily accompanies any election it is now time to come together and act responsibly I call on all candidates to remember the peace pledge they signed just days before the election Do not undermine the credibility of INEC Let us now move forward as one The people have spoken In a communique the between dedicated effort and reward According to El Rufai Tinubu s success at the polls came amid the most onerous circumstances for the candidates of a ruling party adding that it underlines the scale of the hard work put in by the APC and its supporters The governor pointed out that the APC has a duty to repay this faith by providing purposeful governance that delivers progressive outcomes for all Nigerians I have no doubt that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu grasps the import of this victory and will move Nigeria forward with renewed hope He knows he has our staunch support in bringing Nigerians together and uniting the country in common endeavours for progress peace and prosperity he added The governor promised that Kaduna APC would build on this momentum to victory in the March 11
