DENVER, CO — The Oklahoma City Thunder made a big statement in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals, defeating the Denver Nuggets 113-104 at Ball Arena on May 15. This victory not only secures their place in the Conference Finals but also highlights the rising star of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA), who is making a strong case for the MVP trophy.
The Thunder came into the game needing a win to close out the series against a Nuggets team that has exhibited great resilience throughout the playoffs. With SGA leading the charge, scoring 31 points, the Thunder demonstrated their depth and skill, overpowering the Nuggets who were relying heavily on their star Nikola Jokic.
“We knew this was a must-win game, and I’m proud of how everyone stepped up,” SGA said post-game. “This is what we’ve been working for, and now we’re one step closer.”
Denver started strong but faltered as the game progressed. Jokic, who has been brilliant in previous outings, struggled to maintain his momentum, finishing with just 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Nuggets’ supporting cast was unable to provide the firepower needed to keep up with the Thunder’s pace.
The first quarter saw the Thunder exploit the Nuggets’ weaknesses, leading 28-17 by the end of the period. The strong defensive effort, led by Isaiah Hartenstein, who recorded key blocks and rebounds, was crucial in stifling Denver’s attempts to mount a comeback. “Hartenstein was a beast today. His defense really set the tone,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault remarked.
As the game continued, Denver made a few runs, capitalizing on mistakes by the young Thunder squad. In the second quarter, Jamal Murray — despite dealing with illness prior to the game — found his rhythm and scored 24 points for the night, trying to push his team back into contention.
The Thunder, however, answered each rally with resilience. Cason Wallace chipped in with timely three-pointers and critical assists, underscoring the depth of the Thunder bench, which outscored Denver’s bench substantially. “We’ve built a strong team, and I trust everyone to deliver in tough moments,” Wallace said after the game.
With just under three minutes left in the game, the Thunder held a slim lead, forcing the Nuggets to foul as they tried to regain possession. SGA’s clutch free throw shooting ensured the Thunder maintained their edge, with him ultimately sealing the game with a pair of late free throws.
“This isn’t just about me or Jokic,” SGA added. “This is a team effort, and each player knows their role. We’ve been ready for this challenge.”
The loss sends the Nuggets home early, raising questions about their playoff strategy and overall execution. Coach Michael Malone reflected on the disappointing outcome, stating, “We had chances but failed to capitalize. Credit to the Thunder — they outplayed us.”
With the victory, the Thunder’s next matchup is against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Conference Finals, setting the stage for another intense series as they aim for a shot at the NBA title.
