  A week after the reopening of schools in Cape Verde the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Cooperation and Regional Integration of the Government and the United Nations World Food Program WFP today signed an agreement to meet the food and nutritional needs of nearly 90 000 schoolchildren through the national school feeding program The agreement now signed reflects what the Government s effort has been in mobilizing resources to support impact mitigation measures in the face of the most diverse global crises that we are currently witnessing with enormous repercussions on the country s development said Dr Miryan Vieira Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation The implementation parameters and the actions within the scope of this agreement will contribute to the reinforcement of the measures undertaken by the Government with a view to increasing food and nutritional security in Cape Verde in particular for the strengthening of the National Program of School Canteens Vieira added As part of a limited emergency operation WFP will purchase and transport food for school meals using existing procurement platforms to source the food cost effectively while ensuring that national food quality standards are met WFP will also provide advisory services to the government on program monitoring advocacy and evidence building in food security and nutrition while working to drive resource mobilization and partnerships with the government international financial institutions the private sector and other development actors The Government has always valued the work developed and provided by the WFP until 2010 We believe that with its experience the food assistance that is required today and in this case directed to school canteens we will be able to achieve the desired objectives and results within the scope of this program declared Dr Gilberto Silva Minister of Agriculture and Environment The school snack is important because it is aimed at a vulnerable group which are children in the process of learning and by giving them better nutrition reinforcing school cafeterias we would be reaching just over 20 of our population It is a very concrete step the results are visible the products have begun to arrive to be used and we wanted to rejoice with the decisions made The Government will do everything possible to manage this aid very well added Silva In Cape Verde the National School Feeding Program was launched in 1979 with WFP support to increase school enrollment boost learning combat hunger and meet the nutritional needs of students In 2010 the program became government owned and operated becoming the first nationally owned school feeding program in West Africa Today the program covers 788 schools and supports 89 715 preschool primary and secondary students It has helped increase enrollment rates in primary schools while providing social protection to the most vulnerable families Cape Verde s National School Feeding Program is definitely a success story and should be sustained For this to happen the support of international partners is needed during this difficult time to ensure that despite the serious challenges that the country s economy is going through as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic and further aggravated by the crisis Russia Ukraine this important national safety net and investment in children continues said Chris Nikoi WFP Regional Director for West Africa WFP is committed to working with governments development partners and the private sector to replicate Cape Verde s example in other countries in the region and ensure that sustainable national school feeding programs are implemented so that children learn thrive and reach their full potential Nikoi added Cape Verde s economy has been severely affected by the combined effects of weather extremes the COVID 19 pandemic and the disruption of food supply chains due to the unfolding conflict in Ukraine which has pushed up food prices food fuel and fertilizers
