Representatives from 11 African cities have started a visit to two Scandinavian cities to learn about people-centered solutions for urban planning and development in a trip sponsored by the Municipal and Urban Development Fund (https://bit.ly/3fdZiPT ).
The Fund is hosted by the African Development Bank (https://www.AfDB.org).
The 4-day trip to Copenhagen and Malmö, Sweden includes officials from Marrakech, Morocco; Bizerte and Tunis in Tunis; Dodom, Tanzania; Antananarivo, Madagascar; Libreville, Gabon; Bangui, Central African Republic; Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo; Nairobi, Kanifing; Gambia; and Douala, Cameroon.
The cities are all members of the Fund. Ole Stubdrup, project manager for the Municipal and Urban Development Fund and coordinator of the visit, traveled with the city officials.
He said that African and Northern European municipalities face comparable problems, although they appear to be polar opposites.
“This visit should be a source of inspiration for the participants and encourage ideas for specific investments in urban infrastructure,” he said.
The delegation is carrying out field visits and participating in presentations on water management, waste treatment and electric mobility.

Both cities are recognized for their pioneering approaches to balancing sustainable development with quality of life.

It also paves the way for future projects in our respective cities, as we meet with potential partners and investors,” said Davis Mwamfupe, Mayor of Dodoma , during the visit.
As Africa experiences rapid urbanization, city authorities are seeking investment to develop new infrastructure and improve the quality of life for city dwellers.
The Urban and Municipal Development Fund aims to improve the quality of urban life and attract investment for infrastructure by strengthening the technical capacity and planning functions of cities.
The Fund’s approach integrates economic, social and environmental factors.
