As an athlete who beat her coach to win gold, the Delta team has won five gold medals in the cycling event out of the seven events held so far at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta state.
Information Commissioner and Chairman of the Subcommittee, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the move shows the state is unwilling to give up its number one position in sports.
Aniagwu, who named the state the “Home of Sports,” said the Delta team is far from other states even as the game is still young, adding that as it stands now, the gold medals are coming in numbers.
And in the men’s and women’s 1K time trials, Team Delta won both gold medals.
In the Women’s 500m Sprint, Delta’s leading rider Ukpeseraya won gold; River’s Deborah Alase took silver while Tawakalt Yekeen took bronze.
Edo won its first gold medal in cycling when Isah Momohy beat Quaswan Tijaniof of Lagos and Emanuel Gabriel Addo of Delta, who took silver and bronze respectively in the men’s 500m race.
Isa continued his winning streak that placed Team Edo second behind Team Delta in the cycling event when he defeated Team Delta’s Azeez Mutiu in the men’s 200m race.
Leading the final, Mutiu broke a chain mid-race to allow Momoh to pass him for his second gold medal of the day.
Meanwhile, for young Victoria Enwemanya, making her debut at the National Sports Festival and winning gold for Delta is a dream come true.
She said that her feat would further boost her career in sports.
Patricia John, Enwemanya’s coach, was excited even though she settled for the silver medal.
She then expressed her joy at the good performance of her athletes.
“Well, I’m so excited that he won, it shows that I’m doing a very good job.
We hope to win more gold medals,” as the Ogun State athlete won bronze.
Speaking about her feat over the coach, Enwemanya said, “I’m very excited for the gold medal and I hope to win more gold medals at the festival,” this is how Team Delta’s Enwemanya celebrated her gold when she beat her coach .
