The Taraba Primary Health Care Development Agency says it has commenced a state- wide exclusive breastfeeding to educate the populace, especially mothers, on the importance of breastfeeding to the healthy growth of their babies.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Alhaji Aminu Hassan, said on Thursday in Jalingo that the sensitisation was made to coincide with the World Breastfeeding Week.
He said that the Week, which usually held between Aug. 1 and Aug. 7 every year, coincided with this year’s sallah festivities.
Hassan said that the agency, however, decided to observe the Week, with a line-up of activities within the remaining days by holding meetings with stakeholders, healthcare partners and the media to carry out the sensitisation exercise the state.
“The agency has deployed the state and local government health and exclusive breastfeeding educators to over 186 healthcare facilities to reach rural communities across the state with breastfeeding messages.
“We are targeting lactating mothers, traditional and religious leaders to help us in passing relevant information to communities on the need for the child to be exclusively breastfed with the mother’s milk for the first six months and weaned after 24 months.
“Breastfeeding is highly advantageous to both the child and the mother, because in many cases, it serves as a contraceptive for the mother, while protecting the child from diseases,” he explained.
Apart from stimulating the immune systems of babies, breast milk also protects them against acute respiratory infections, diarrhoea, urinary tract infections, bacterial, meningitis and sudden infant death syndrome, among others.
“Besides benefiting infants, breastfeeding creates a special bond between mothers and infants,” Aminu said.
He, therefore, appealed to all citizens to support the global campaign in promoting early introduction of breastfeeding after birth “for a healthier planet for the benefit of humanity and in line with global best practices.”
