Talent hunt: Expert discovers 35 amateur boxers in Enugu

Published

on

A former Welterweight African Boxing Champion, Ikechukwu Okoronkwo says no fewer than 35 amateur boxers have been discovered in Enugu State.

Okoronkwo disclosed this on Sunday in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Enugu.

The 1992 champion said that the boxers were discovered through the Edward Ubosi Boxing Talent Hunt initiative in the state.

The coordinator of the talent hunt, which is a brainchild of the Speaker of the State Assembly, Edward Ubosi, said that the initiative was making waves in rural communities of the state.

“The talent hunt is making waves in all the communities and we want to make sure that every community participate in this programme.

Okoronkwo described sports as a big industry, adding that the talents so far discovered would be nurtured to stardom.

“ I found out that there are lapses in the management of athletes at the

state level but as a professional in boxing, I know the way to go.

“I want to make sure that our youths are developed,” he said.

He said that it was his desire to expose the budding boxers to compete at the national level, as it would be a delight to monitor their career progression.

Okoronkwo said that he was sad at the rate of decline in the sports, adding that efforts needed to be made to ensure the growth of boxing in the country.

He attributed the bane of boxing in the country to its management by those he said knew little about the system.

Okoronkwo said that for the country to get it right in the boxing profession, every state government should have at least 50 boxing coaches because every boxer deserved to have a coach.

Federation President seeks private companies’ sponsorship for boxing

Published

on

The President of Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Kenneth Minimah, has urged private companies to support three tiers of government in promoting and sponsoring of boxing competitions and boxing tournaments in Nigeria.

Minimah made the plea on Friday at a news conference to herald the Season One Seminar of the Nigeria Series Boxing (NBS) at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

According to him, it’s being difficult engaging corporate firms in the sponsorship of sports like boxing.

“Some says it is hazardous and violent sport and that they would rather put their money into sports that are entertaining and non-violent.

“Boxing is beautiful, every other sports has its own hazards too, not just boxing; but with these experiences when we come on board, I am sure corporate firms will want to engage in it.

“All our sponsors are inclined toward the one sports, everybody wants to sponsor that sports.

“Little attention is given to boxing; in the past, the great boxers were employed, now these boxers are not gainfully employed,” he said.
