2023 Elections: Federal Govt Begins Capacity Building For Police Officers

Federal government has flagged off capacity building on emotional intelligence aimed at increasing self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management, for improved service delivery by the rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The commencement of the one day sensitisation workshop and capacity building by the minister of Police Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Maigari  Dingyadi took place at the Murtala Nyako Multi-purpose hall in Yola, Adamawa State.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Bolaji Kazeem, stated in a statement that the minister said due to the demanding nature of police duties, a police officer is exposed to stress and anxiety which could be transferred to members of the public resulting in infractions noting that near absence of self-management in some policemen has resulted in bringing the reputation of the entire force to odium and near disrepute.

In his words, “the good news is that the Ministry of Police Affairs is working closely with police management to institutionalize service orientation among officers and men of the Nigeria Police to deepen citizen’s trust, confidence and increased participation for robust human intelligence”.

He said, “It is hoped that, the workshop will assist in self critique; in order to strengthen weaknesses in emotional intelligence to improve police-citizens relationship for enhanced internal security management in Nigeria”.

Dingyadi stated that the workshop has been scheduled to hold in other geopolitical zones in the coming days/weeks, which is part of the Ministry of Police Affairs’ efforts at reforming and re-orienting members of the Nigeria Police, with special emphasis on junior officers, adding that they constitute the vast majority and interface more with the populace, upon which opinions are formed on the Nigeria Police in general.

Apparently tired of needless elimination of innocent citizens by men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Federal Government has organised a one-day sensitisation and capacity building workshop on emotional intelligence for the rank and file to end extra-judicial killings and improve service delivery.

Minister of Police Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, who opened the event yesterday in Yola, Adamawa State, observed that due to the demanding nature of policing, an officer is exposed to stress and anxiety, which could be transferred to members of the public, thus resulting in infractions.

He acknowledged that the near absence of self-management in some policemen had soiled the image of the force.

His words: “The good news is that the Ministry of Police Affairs is working closely with the police management to institutionalise service orientation among officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to deepen citizen’s trust, confidence and increase participation for robust human intelligence

“It is hoped that the workshop will assist in self critique to strengthen weaknesses in emotional intelligence for improved police-citizen relationship and internal security management in Nigeria.”

The minister hinted that the workshop would be replicated in the remaining five geopolitical zones in the coming days and weeks as part of the ministry’s efforts to reform and reorientate the security agents, with focus on junior officers, adding that they constitute vast majority and interface more with the populace, upon which opinions are formed on the force in general.

He submitted that the training was happening at a crucial time in the nation’s history when Nigerians will, once again, exercise their franchise in electing a new set of leaders to steer the ship of state at this year’s general elections.

Dingyadi restated government’s commitment to improving the welfare of policemen across the federation through better emoluments, barracks, work environment and modern security enablers to tackle criminality.

He added: “These laudable interventions by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in policing deserve Nigerians’ ownership and reciprocity through cooperation with officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force. To realise government’s desire for active citizen’s participation in policing endeavour, Nigerians must embrace global best practices of seeing the Police as their own. This will in effect eliminate subjective apathy, which has hitherto hindered efficient police service delivery in Nigeria.”

In his goodwill message, the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa, Sikiru Kayode Akande, lauded the ministry for the initiative.

Earlier in her welcome address, Director, RERFORMS and SERVICOM, Mrs. Maryam Dalhatu Abdulmalik, explained that the workshop was on attitudinal change for effective service delivery, an integral part of various police reforms, and to identify the missing gaps in police-citizen relations, especially in the area of unfriendliness and mistrust.

‘I will die a hero’ — court sentences Kano cleric to death for blasphemy

A higher Shari'a court in Kano has convicted Abduljabbar Nasiru-Kabara, a cleric, of blasphemy.

Nasiru-Kabara was indicted for alleged blasphemous comments against the Prophet Muhammad.

The charges were brought against him by the Kano State government.

Suraj Sa'eda, the prosecution attorney, said the defendant committed the offense on August 10, October 25, and December 20, 2019.

Pronouncing his sentence on Thursday, Ibrahim Sarki Yola, the presiding kadi (judge), said: "I am convinced that the prosecution lawyer has done his part and proved his points beyond a reasonable doubt."

Before pronouncing the sentence, the kadi asked if the convict had anything to say.

Subsequently, Aminu Abubakar, who appeared as defense counsel, asked the court to be lenient towards the defendant, adding that he acted out of ignorance.

However, the cleric intervened and denied knowing the lawyer.

Do not know him. This is the first time I'm seeing it. He shouldn't be allowed to speak on my behalf. I can and must allow myself to speak for myself,” she said.

Speaking further, Abduljabbar said, “My lord, after hearing how you distorted all my proofs, turned around all my submissions, assigned me words I never uttered.

“Hand over your judgment, and I'm not asking for leniency at all. I want all my supporters to know that I will die a hero and I do not want you (Judge) Ibrahim Sarki Yola to do me any favors or grant me clemency. This is my last word. Assalamu Alaikum".

The convict was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging.

BREAKING: Nigerian Islamic Cleric, Abduljabbar Kabara Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Blasphemy

A High Sharia Court in Kano sentenced controversial Islamic cleric Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara to death by hanging.

The embattled Nigerian cleric was arrested and detained by the state government for allegedly making blasphemous statements against the Prophet Muhammad. According to the prosecution, his statements are capable of disturbing public peace.

Abduljabbar was indicted on July 16, 2021 by the Kano State government before Judge Sarki Yola for alleged blasphemy and incitement.

Abduljabbar Kabara is famous for his controversial religious comments and statements, which some Muslims have considered sacrilege to the Prophet Muhammad.

On Thursday, the court sentenced the cleric to death by hanging.

After passing the sentence, Judge Sarki Yola gave the convicted person 30 days to appeal the sentence or lose his right to do so.

The judge also ordered the state government to confiscate two mosques belonging to Abduljabbar and asked all media to desist from using any of Abduljabbar's teachings and images, Daily Trust reports.

Before delivering his verdict, the judge said: "I am convinced that the prosecution has done its part and has proven its points beyond a reasonable doubt."

Thereafter, he convicted the defendant of all charges against him.

However, there was a slight drama in court when lawyer Aminu Ado Abubakar, who introduced himself as the defense attorney, asked the court to grant Abduljabbar leniency because he did what he did out of ignorance.

At this point, Abduljabbar stood up and said that he did not know the lawyer.

According to the clergyman, he was seeing the lawyer for the first time.

Do not know him. This is the first time I'm seeing it. He shouldn't be allowed to speak on my behalf. I can and must allow myself to speak for myself,” she said.

However, the judge said that the lawyer was recognized by the court as a defense attorney.

“My lord, after hearing how you distorted all my proofs, turned all my submissions on its head, assigned me words I never uttered.

Thereafter, he convicted the defendant of all charges against him.

Kabara was on trial for the issue bordering on blasphemous statements against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), an act capable of inciting public peace. Abduljabbar was indicted in July 2021 by the Kano State government.

Until the judge delivered his final statement, the embattled Abduljabbar, who appeared in court for a final verdict in his 15-month trial, was calmer than ever, sitting in a chair, relaxed, counting his rosary on his fingers ( pleading ) and listening attentively.

A high Sharia court for Kano did not sentence cleric Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara to death by hanging after finding him guilty of blasphemy against Islam's holy prophet.

The trial took place on Thursday with Judge Ibrahim Sarki Yola to say he found the cleric guilty of all the charges the Kano state government accuses me of.

Among the charges di na say that I am preaching the tendency to cause security wahala for Kano state.

Di case don dey court for a year and three months now.

Abduljabbar tells the court that my final statement says that he does not need mercy or leniency before the judge finally reads the sentence.

The convict has 30 days to appeal the sentence to the highest sharia court.

    Who is Abduljabbar?

Abduljabbar is the son of the late preacher and leader of the Nigerian di Qadiriyya sect Nasir Kabara, dem be family of preachers and im broda Karibu na currently leader of the Nigerian Qadiriyya sect.

Over the years, Abduljabbar did not have serious problems with the Oda preachers and the public because some of them say that his preaching is disrespectful to the holy prophet of Islam.

Earlier this month, the Kano State government organized a public debate between Abduljabbar and some clerics who challenged my style, and according to the judge of the day, Professor Shehu Abdullahi, the controversial preacher did not respond correctly.

For my defense, Abduljabbar says that those who preach against Islam originate from some anti-Islam pimp, though for debate they don't prove it.

The Di Kabara wey Abduljabbar family comes from getting the ogbonge story from Kano.

Di familia gets serious political value and that's not why politicians are very careful about di familia as many roads and bridges to Kano bear his last name.

While most of the Kano public bin say the preacher deserves punishment for his preaching method, while my followers say they still agree with am and dat pipo they don't understand the controversial aspects of my preaching na im cause wahala .

INEC laments poor rate of collection of PVC in Adamawa

The Adamawa office of the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), has lamented the poor pace of collection of outstanding voter cards by the electorate in the state.

Mallam Hudu Yunusa, the newly-deployed Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, expressed the concern at a news conference at the premises of the commission in Yola on Friday.

He said over 200,000 PVCs, registered since 2019, were lying idle in the offices of the commission across the 21 local government areas.

He said 36,000 additional voters had been registered during the 2022 voter registration.

“Some of the voter cards are yet to be collected by their original enrollees.

” He appealed to the media and the stakeholders to continue to sensitive the electorate to the imperative of the voter cards, stressing the card qualified one as an eligible voter.

The REC explained that the commission received delivery of 4,104 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Result Viewing Portal for deployment to 4,104 polling units for the elections.

He said the state would host a week-long Northeast zonal Technology Training in elections in batches, saying the participants were drawn from Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba states.

Yunusa appealed to politicians and political parties to conduct themselves with decency, discipline, and decorum during their campaigns, stressing that campaigns should be issue-based.

“We call on the politicians to avoid name-dropping, provocative comments, violence, thuggery, and engagement of militia,” he said.

“The Electoral Act prohibits campaigns in worship and public offices, so such attitude would not be condoned by the commission,” he added.

He said the commission had updated the staff skills through capacity-building training, seminars, and workshops on election issues and processes.

According to him, the commission has so far recorded 10,000 people who applied to work as ad hoc staff out of the targeted 16,000 required temporary staff for the polls.

“The commission’s ad hoc staff recruitment portal is still active up to Dec. 14, 2022; we, therefore, call on interested and qualified Nigerians to apply,” he said.

He said the commission would engage stakeholders on the conduct of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) voting, saying “we would focus our attention on Madagali, Fufore, and Yola South local government areas.

“We are currently displaying the Preliminary Register of Voters (PRV) nationwide from 12th to 28th November 2022 for claims and objections, ” he disclosed.
