Bosso says Flying Eagles ready for WAFU Zone B Cup of Nations

Ladan Bosso, Head Coach of the Flying Eagles, says his team are for action at the 2022 WAFU Zone B Under-20 Cup of Nations in the Niger Republic.

Bosso told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that the Nigerian national under-20 men football team were in good shape and ready to depart for Niamey on Thursday.

The Flying Eagles will face perennial rivals Ghana in their opening Group B game when the WAFU Zone B qualifiers get underway.

Bosso said his team opened camp in Abuja since April 19 with 56 players and it gradually took shape.

“We started to reduce the initial team gradually, even though we started the camp barely a week from now.

“We have played three matches, and we won all the games.

“We had our seventh training session Monday evening and we have started to see  the difference in the team’s performance than when we started.

“So, we are good to go,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team’s first friendly match ended in a 2-2 draw and it was for those players who came for screening.

However, on Saturday, they played two friendlies, winning 4-2 against Cosmos FC  of Abuja and 4-0 against Basira  FC from Nasarawa state.

“In these three matches, we scored 10 goals and conceded four. This shows that things are not too bad.

“On Tuesday, we will take on City FC of Abuja in another friendly to continue to work  on the team in order to produce a better result,” Bosso added.

The coach however said he and his team were not scared or afraid of Group rivals Ghana and Burkina Faso at the qualifiers.

“We will strive to give our best to win our first match and the subsequent ones in order to progress,” he said.

NAN reports that the 2022 WAFU Zone B Under-20 Cup of Nations will hold from May 7 to May 20, and it is a qualifier for the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has already approved for the team to travel with 30 players.

Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Ghana are in the tournament’s group B, while hosts Niger Republic have been drawn against Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Republic of Benin in Group A.

NWFL Super 6: FCT FA backs Naija Ratels for title challenge

The FCT Football Association (FA) has pledged to support Naija Ratels FC from Abuja as they prepare for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six.

Ngozi Eze, chairwoman of the FCT FA women's football committee, told the Nigerian News Agency that the FA was proud of the Abuja-based club for qualifying for the NWFL Super Six.

Eze said the FA had presented a meritorious award to Naija Ratels FC owner Paul Edeh for his support of women's football in the FCT.

“When the club came, they started from the professional league, from there, they qualified to play the Nigerian Premier League women's football.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both sides’ final game, which was the last match of the competition, was played at the main bowl of the Dipo Dina Stadium.

Oghenebrume Ikehua scored in the game’s second minute, before Vivian Ikechukwu extended their lead in the 44th minute to put the Port Harcourt-based side in the driver’s seat.

Alice Ogebe scores in the 63rd minute, while Maryann Ezeanagu’s 79th minute effort ensured that Rivers Angels retained the league title which they won in 2019.

Okon said the competition showed that they were worthy champions of the competition.

Also, the Head Coach of Sunshine Queens, Wemimo Mathew, praised the resilience of her players in spite of having several players injured before the competition.

“The early goal, that first goal, affected my players. Also, it was not easy for them to play five matches in less than a week.

“But it’s a game of football, and you win some, you lose some,” she said.

NAN also reports that Rivers Angels, with 11 points from five matches, will alongside Delta Queens represent Nigeria at the WAFU Qualifiers for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League.

2021 AFCON Qualifier: Musa, Iheanacho, Etebo among early birds at Super Eagles camp

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho and Oghenekaro Etebo were among the early arrivals at the team’s camp in the prestigious Eterno Hotel in Benin City.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Super Eagles take on the Leone Stars at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City on Nov. 13 in a first of two qualifying matches for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team will then fly to Freetown for the return game on Nov. 17 at the Siaka Stevens Stadium.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed their arrivals on the team’s official Twitter handle on Monday even as coach Gernot Rohr raised an alarm that the invited players were facing travelling difficulties.

Rohr had earlier revealed that the players invited to the national team for the 2021 AFCON qualifying matches with Sierra Leone were facing travelling difficulties due to a new lockdown in some European countries.

The players affected include Daniel Akpeyi, Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo, Jamilu Collins, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, Kevin Akpoguma, Frank Onyeka, Emmanuel Dennis, Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Osimhen and Chidera Ejuke.

The German football tactician said he was, however, hopeful of having the full complement of the 24 players called up by Tuesday.

According to the tweet by NFF, Musa who flew into the country from Saudi Arabia, where he recently parted ways with Al Nassr was a surprise visitor at the camp of the Flying Eagles in Abuja earlier on Monday.

“He charged the team to go do the nation proud at the WAFU 2020 Regional Cup before connecting another flight to Benin.”

Musa was joined by Leicester City of England’s Iheanacho and Etebo from Turkish-based club, Galatasaray.

Other early birds to the team’s camp are goalkeeper Maduka Okoye of Sparta Rotterdam in The Netherlands and KRC Genk of Belgium’s forward Paul Onuachu who was called up to replace the injured Moses Simon.

NAN also reports that the Sierra Leoneans, who are booked at the Lush Hotel in Benin City, are expected to fly into Lagos on Wednesday from where they will connect another flight to Benin the same day.

U-20 WAFU cup: My team will not be distracted by venue change — Bosso

Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso says his team will not be distracted by any change in venue or time for the WAFU Under-20 tournament initially holding in  Togo.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Togo was initially slated to host the tournament from Nov. 18 to Dec. 2 but recently withdrew from hosting citing COVID-19 issues.

The West Africa Football Union (WAFU) are now due to announce a new host between Niger and Ghana who are on standby.

Bosso however emphasised that the team will continue to intensify training at the FIFA Goal project pitch, Abuja so as not to be cut napping.

“We will not be distracted by any change in venue or time, our goal is to build a solid team before the tournament.

“We will continue our physical and tactical routines and engage in more friendly matches to fine tune our strategies for the battle ahead,” he said.

The experienced coach said the announcement of the 25-man provisional list will be slightly delayed due to the change in venue and one or two injuries in camp.

He said the team is beginning to gel and show more character after a recent hard fought 2-1 win in a friendly against Prince Kazeem Eletu football Academy of Lagos.

The coach expressed optimism that the team will do Nigeria proud at the tournament and ultimately pick a ticket for the 2021 U-20 AFCON in Mauritania.

NAN reports that the team has intensified preparation with tactical trainings in the morning and physical training in the evening.

Nigeria are drawn in Group B of the qualifying tournament, alongside Ghana’s Black Satellites and the Junior Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

Initial host, Togo, Republic of Niger, Benin Republic and Burkina Faso will battle it out in Group A, from which the top two teams will qualify to represent the zone at the 2021 Under-20 AFCON.

Academy proprietor canvasses for professional academies to lift Nigerian football

Chief Kazeem Eletu, Proprietor of Kazeem Eletu Football Academy Lagos, has canvassed for the establishment of professionally managed football academies across the country to take Nigerian football to the next level.

Eletu told the Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja that professionally managed football academies was the way to go to discover grassroots talents for the national teams, and government support was needed to develop these academies to engage the youth meaningfully and off the streets.

He said given the abundant talent in the country, we must begin to run football clubs and academies professionally like it obtains in Europe.

NAN reports that his academy engaged the Flying Eagles in a thrilling friendly that ended in a narrow 2-1 win for the national side which is preparing for the WAFU U-20 tournament.

The football proprietor said his well-drilled team that almost snatched victory from the Flying Eagles was only put together in two weeks.

“As you can see my boys played better and were more cohesive in the game. They were leading in the game up to the 70th minute, but because of fatigue and lack of concentration, the U-20 boys came back towards the tail end of the game,” he said.

He assured that the team will soon embark on a training tour of Morocco and some European countries to further expose his young boys.

The Eletu academy Lagos, tutored by a young French fitness coach, Alex Copolleni, is modelled after the French Ligue 1 clubside, Paris Saint German (PSG).
