Why Atiku’s presidential bid will fail in 2023: VON DG

Mr Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON) says former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential bid in the 2023 poll, will fail because it is against the principle of power rotation between the South and North.

Okechukwu, also a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said this when he spoke with newsmen in Abuja on Sunday.

He referred to the patriotic position of APC Northern Governors’ letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on June 4, as evidence that the rotation of the presidency between the North and South, is intended to unite the country.

“After careful deliberation, we wish to state our firm conviction that after eight years in office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC presidential candidate for 2023 election should be one of our teeming members from the southern states of Nigeria.

“It is a question of honour for the APC, an obligation that is not in anyway affected by the decisions taken by another political party.

We affirm that upholding this principle is in the interest of building a stronger, more united and more progressive country,” he said.

Okechukwu also recalled former President Oluegun Obasanjo’s statement on the matter: “I am very much aware that it’s the turn of the South to produce the next President of Nigeria.

I was part of the meeting when the agreement was made between Northern and Southern Leaders.

I am even surprised PDP gave its ticket to another Northern candidate.

“It will be an injustice to the South if the North retains power after 8 years of rule,” Obasanjo had stated.

Consequently, Okechukwu said that it would be a herculean task for Atiku in his mission to divide North and South to defeat the APC Northern Governors Forum, Buhari, former Obasanjo and host of other unifier patriots like Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Gov. Wilson Wike, Chief Edwin Clark and uncountable unifier patriots who supported power shift from North to South.

“My take is that Atiku is not a unifier and cannot defeat the Northern Governors Forum, Buhari, Obasanjo, Adebanjo, Clark and sophisticated northern electorate by his mission to win by dividing the north and the south.

“It is an unforced error to think that he can manipulate our fault lines and the abundance of unifier patriots of the north.

The Northern electorate are very sophisticated, they voted for Zik, Abiola and Obasanjo.

“Truly, take it or leave it, Governor Nyesom Wike’s main grouse is Atiku’s violent breach of PDP’s Constitution, manipulation of Governor Aminu Tambuwal and our fault lines.

“My bet is that the wound of Machiavellian dosage Atiku infested the PDP is not likely going to heal before 2023 presidential election, ” the Enugu APC chieftain said.

He added: “These unifier patriotic forces won’t allow him no matter his gusto to trample and rubbish the good works of patriots who sacrificed their presidential ambition and instituted the rotation convention in our political firmament.

” Responding to suggestions that Atiku may be running on the trajectory that democracy confers right to vote and be voted for, the DG VON said that although democracy provides for freedom as one of its ethos, if others had engaged in unforced error breach of rotation convention, and division of north and south, Obasanjo could have imposed Sir Peter Odili as President in 2007, instead of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. “Obasanjo as a unifier nationalist dropped Odili to maintain the unity of north and south.

Atiku has the freedom to cherry-pick the laws and convention of his fancy; however the truism is that Atiku is not a unifier, because he failed to adhere to federal character principle, which is our own variant of affirmative action that is observed in liberal democracy globally.

This is the yard stick of measurement of character.

“Remember that before the APC Northern Governors Forum were unifier elder statesmen – Alhajis Abubukar Rimi, Umaru Shinkafi, Adamu Ciroma, Dr Sola Saraki et al, who for equity, unity, fairness and enthronement of sense of belonging dropped their presidential ambition in 1999. They placed the unity of Nigeria above self.

“Looking forward to the coming general elections, Okechukwu declared: “Please, don’t forget that we have unforgettable unification lessons.

One, is that Atiku violently breached PDP’s Constitution, which expressly provided for rotation of power.

This places in doubt his unifier claim,” he said.

Okechukwu added: “Secondly, he decamped to APC in 2014 on the pretext that former President Goodluck Jonathan breached power rotation to the north.

Then it was the turn of the north, not now.

“Thirdly, in 2018 unifiers nationalists like Wike obliged PDP Northerners an open field, when all southerners in obedience to rotation convention did not participate in the PDP presidential primary in Port Harcourt.

    He was the main beneficiary.

“Fourthly, Senators Ayu and Adamu, both northerners were elected chairmen of PDP & APC respectively anchored on the sure foot – Turn of the South.

” He challenged all unifiers and genuine democrats to join hands and stop Abubakar before he divides the north and the south by rubbishing the political power rotation arrangement between the North and South, “which is the bond of our unity and the health of our democracy.

” Okechukwu said that Obasanjo’s statement that a wrong outcome of the 2023 general election could consume Nigeria is a veiled warning to the dangers of voting another northern presidential candidate to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

  • Ahead of the 2023 general elections the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria VON Mr Osita Okechukwu says Northern Christians would not vote for the Peoples Democratic Party PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar Okechukwu also a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress APC said this while answering questions from journalists in Abuja on Sunday Reacting to the Northern Christians outrage over APC s Muslim Muslim Ticket Okechukwu said he shared their anguish on identity politics and fears But I know that in the fullness of time contrary to the speculations of spin doctors they would not vote for the former Vice President he said He assured that whatever marginalisation the Northern Christians suffered today they would suffer no more if the APC standard bearer Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu becomes the President in 2023 Our first slogan in APC is change Our mantra is change We will not remain static never We will change whatever is not working All we ask Nigerians is to give us another 8 years as you gave our sister political party the PDP Regarding the Northern Christians outrage over APC s Muslim Muslim ticket if any pundit thinks they will vote for Atiku my answer is Capital No No matter what they know he is bringing nothing new to the table Find out Northern Christians do not trust Atiku They know his cherry picking antics as per rule of law and rotation convention They also know his ambivalence on religion as demonstrated in the late Deborah s imbroglio in Sokoto which is still fresh in the mind of every Christian Secondly they know that Tinubu and by extension the Yorubas DNA is devoid of religious extremism and bigotry Yorubas celebrate Eid and Xmas together Okechukwu said The Enugu APC chieftain added As a matter of fact without being personal one was a witness when my dear friend Babachir Lawal informed the world during his Thanksgiving Church Service at ECWA Wuse that Tinubu and Pa Akande were instrumental to his appointment as Secretary to Government of the Federation SGF May one ask is it possible that neither Tinubu nor Pa Akande didn t know any Northern Muslim then to lobby for Or has Tinubu changed 360 degrees Thirdly they re fully aware that Atiku has violently breached the rotation convention of president from north to south and painfully by extension of the PDP s Constitution For Atiku rotation convention is north south geopolitically benched only when he wins the president If he fails as in 2019 the rotation convention goal post must be shifted It is on record that Atiku enjoyed and celebrated rotation convention when in 2018 Governor Nyeson Wike and other Southerners in obedience to the letters and spirit of Section 3 c of PDP s Constitution allowed only Northern presidential Northern Christians won’t vote for Atiku: VON DG

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) Mr Osita Okechukwu, says Northern Christians would not vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Okechukwu also a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said this while answering questions from journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

Reacting to the Northern Christians outrage over APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Okechukwu said he shared their anguish on identity politics and fears.

“But I know that in the fullness of time, contrary to the speculations of spin doctors, they would not vote for the former Vice President,” he said.

He assured that whatever marginalisation the Northern Christians suffered today, they would suffer no more if the APC standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu becomes the President in 2023. “Our first slogan in APC is change.

    Our mantra is change.

We will not remain static, never.

We will change whatever is not working.

All we ask Nigerians is to give us another 8 years as you gave our sister political party, the PDP.

“Regarding the Northern Christians outrage over APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket; if any pundit thinks they will vote for Atiku, my answer is ‘Capital No’.

No matter what, they know he is bringing nothing new to the table.

“Find out, Northern Christians do not trust Atiku.

They know his cherry-picking antics as per rule of law and rotation convention.

They also know his ambivalence on religion, as demonstrated in the late Deborah’s imbroglio in Sokoto, which is still fresh in the mind of every Christian.

“Secondly, they know that Tinubu and by extension the Yorubas’ DNA is devoid of religious extremism and bigotry.

Yorubas celebrate Eid and Xmas together,” Okechukwu said.

The Enugu APC chieftain added:“As a matter of fact, without being personal, one was a witness when my dear friend Babachir Lawal informed the world during his Thanksgiving Church Service at ECWA Wuse, that Tinubu and Pa Akande were instrumental to his appointment as Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF).

“May one ask, is it possible that neither Tinubu nor Pa Akande didn’t know any Northern Muslim then to lobby for?

Or has Tinubu changed 360 degrees?

” “Thirdly, they’re fully aware that Atiku has violently breached the rotation convention of president from north to south and painfully by extension of the PDP’s Constitution.

For Atiku rotation convention is north-south geopolitically benched, only when he wins the president.

If he fails as in 2019, the rotation convention goal post must be shifted.

“It is on record that Atiku enjoyed and celebrated rotation convention when in 2018, Governor Nyeson Wike and other Southerners in obedience to the letters and spirit of Section 3(c) of PDP’s Constitution allowed only Northern presidential aspirants to contest in Port Harcourt.

“But in 2022 PDP presidential primary election he fought tooth and nail to jettison the rotation convention, arguing childishly that it is not applicable to PDP?

Hence breached Section 3(c) of PDP’s Constitution.

Some of us Southerners are as hurt as Northern Christians over this willful breach.

” “Yes, faith balance is very important in building bonds of inclusion, so is rotation convention which bonds north and south, and cements inclusion and corporate existence.

This is why I continue to salute APC’s Northern Governors, majority of whom unlike PDP’s Governors by this noble patriotism, restored equity, natural justice and national loyalty in our clime.

“If PDP Governors had obeyed rotation convention from north to south, to be honest there wouldn’t be the imperative of APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket.

They cannot benefit from their negligence.

I stand to be contradicted,” Okechukwu stated emphatically.

On the anger of the Northern Christians over a seeming premeditated plan to exclude all Christians in both the APC party structure and government, Okechukwu maintained that he shares their plight, assuring that such marginalisation would not repeat itself under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President.

“We are witnesses when Dr Umaru Dikko as Transport Minister, was more powerful than Vice President, when Mrs Diezani Madueke as Petroleum Minister was more powerful than Vice President and recently, how powerful Abba Kyari (of blessed memory) was as Chief of Staff to the President.

Therefore, Christians nationwide should give APC another chance.

” He said every Nigerian knew Tinubu’s antecedents as Governor of Lagos State, describing him as a master of sourcing for the best from every creed, tribe and tongue.

“I maintain that the next APC’s Federal Government must as a matter of urgent national importance adopt the good policies of the current administration, contain the palpable insecurity in the land and build new bonds of brotherhood.

” He summed up that throughout history there were no two successive regimes that were identical in every particular matter.

“In fact, it is only President Buhari’s regime that has the credit record of continuity of 98% of abandoned and ongoing roads, rails, and other infrastructural projects in Nigeria, both at federal, state and local councils for over five decades.

    Atiku dissembled on NNPC restructuring-Okechukwu

The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) Mr Osita Okechukwu has taken a swipe at the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for accusing the ruling party of stealing his idea to reform the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

While reacting to the unveiling of the NNPC Limited last Tuesday, the PDP Presidential standard bearer alleged that APC stole his idea to reform the state owned oil corporation to make it more profitable, transparent and efficient.

But in a statement on Thursday, Okechukwu, also a foundation member of the APC countered the former Vice President, wondering how on earth APC stole Atiku’s Idea when about 2 billion dollars Signatures Bonus and 1.5 billion dollars LNG Proceeds between 2004 and 2006, were allegedly stolen under his watch.

The VON boss lampooned Atiku for the sleaze that trailed the privatisation of state owned enterprises under his watch as the Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation while he served as the nation’s number two citizen.

“Am one of those who going by President Olusegun Obasanjo’s testimonies on Atiku, his ambivalence on late Deborah’s imbroglio and his antecedents will not go to bank with his posturing statement.

“How come Atiku who failed to reform NNPC when he has the powers as chairman of National Economic Council and chairman of National Council Privatisation honestly come today to dissemble facts?” “One challenges Atiku to refute the allegation of September 2009 Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, that 2 billion dollars Signatures Bonus and 1.5 billion dollars were neither reflected in the Federation Account nor 47.32 per cent due to States and local government councils disbursed to them.

“Thus, violently breached Section 162{3} of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, which states, “Any amount standing to the credit of the Federation Account shall be distributed among the Federal and State Governments and the Local Government Councils in such a manner as may be prescribed by the National Assembly,” he said.

Okechukwu added:”One hopes that Atiku will not compel us to look into the less than transparent process which governed the privatisation of State Owned Enterprises when he was chairman of the National Council on Privatisation.

“The outcome of which is sordid result of gnashing of teeth where instead of coming to life the enterprises like Niger Dock, Electricity Distribution Companies et al are not the envisaged instrument of economic development, but poverty creation.” According to Okechukwu, His Excellency Atiku Abubukar instead of commending the uncommon patriotism and political will of President Buhari to hands off the NNPC’s honeypot, is engrossed with Fake News and dissembling of facts.

He said that time has changed and Nigerians were very anxious of reality more than before.

Recall that Atiku had in his statement said:“I had in 2018 made public my plans to reform the NNPC to make it more profitable, transparent, and efficient.

The APCled government denigrated me for my patriotic vision.

“But today, I am happy to note that the same government has taken a tentative step along the lines of the suggestions that I had made.” Atiku added that, “I hope I’ll have the opportunity to complete the process of turning the NNPC into a genuinely world-class company in the mold of the NLNG, Aramco of Saudi Arabia, and Petrobras of Brazil, where Nigerians and institutions will invest in.”

Okechukwu commends APC leaders, northern governors for endorsing power shift

A founding member of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has congratulated the party’s northern governors and political leaders for strengthening Nigeria’s unity by endorsing power shift to the South.

Okechukwu, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, described the endorsement as uncommon patriotic gesture and principled response to building nationhood.

He said that by the singular act, the APC governors and political leaders from the north have exposed the leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who attempted to harvest from ethno-religious fault lines in Nigeria’s polity.

Okechukwu said that PDP attempt to harvest from primordial sentiments had not only breached rotation convention in its constitution, but had wittingly or unwittingly “dug their electoral grave” in 2023 presidential election.

“It’s my considered view that the sophisticated northern voters, who voted for Chiefs MKO Abiola and Olusegun Obasanjo will in 2023 vote for APC presidential candidate and shame PDP.” Okechukwu said.

Okechukwu, who is also the Director General (D-G) of Voice of Nigeria (VON), noted that the northern APC Governors and political leaders deserve commendation for ceding power to the south; hence hoisting Nigeria’s unity flag and advancing the frontiers of Nigeria’s democracy.

He said that the decision to rightfully rotate power to the South, the northern leaders had upheld the progressive bent of APC and exposed the opportunistic tendencies of the PDP.

“I am very elated. I commend APC Governors and political leaders of Northern belt for their profound patriotic statement, which aligns with the Mr President’s idea of consensus.

“By this singular decision, they have killed three birds with one stone.

“One, they hoisted the National Unity Flag by their position that it is the turn of the south to produce Nigeria’s President in 2023.

“This is about the loftiest way to fly the National Unity Flag at a critical time, when our dear country is highly polarised and in cliff-hanger.

“I must add that this is national healing balm and bridge-building pedigree of APC governors and political leaders of the Northern belt, which they anchored on the doctrine of progressivism.”

The VON D-G added that the northern governors and political leaders from APC invoked the progressive philosophy of APC, by placing national interest above parochial interest.

    Okechukwu said the overall patriotic display by the leaders was captured in their statement, where the governors remarked that;

“After careful deliberation, we wish to state our firm conviction that after eight years in office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023 elections should be one of our teeming members from the southern states of Nigeria.

“It is a question of honour for the APC, an obligation that is not in anyway affected by the decisions taken by another political party.

“We affirm that upholding this principle is in the interest of building a stronger, more united and more progressive country.

“We therefore wish to strongly recommend to President  Buhari that the search for a successor as the APC’s presidential candidate be limited to our compatriots from the southern states.

“We appeal to all aspirants from the northern states to withdraw in the national interest and allow only the aspirants from the south to proceed to the primaries.”

Okechukwu said that those words on the marble represent new credo for APC in its march towards building on the foundation for national unity, stability, peace and prosperity, which has been laid by President Buhari.

He described the action of northern APC governors and leaders as the most noble way to expose PDP for what it represents.

He said that Nigerians now see that the alleged ‘dollar rain primary’ that produced PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was a pyrrhic victory that has nothing in store for the new Nigeria of the citizens dream.

He added that the victory at the primary may not lead to ultimate victory, especially with the patriotic stance of Abubakar‘s northern brothers.

He recalled that Abubakar willingly defected from PDP to APC in 2014 in protest of breach of zoning by ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.

He also expressed disbelief that the same Abubakar who benefitted from the zoning convention in 2019 could allegedly deploy huge resources to breach the same zoning convention.

Okechukwu congratulated the APC Northern Governors, political leaders and President Buhari for being true Nigerians.

He added that Nigerians had seen the difference between those who want a better Nigeria and those who want to trade with the nation’s future.

Save naira from obscene dollar-monetised presidential primaries- VON DG tasks Buhari

Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON) Osita Okechukwu, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly come to the rescue of Nigeria’s currency, the naira, before politicians depreciates it out of recognition.

He said that a nation’s currency is one of the critical indices of measuring the general health of its economy, stressing that when the currency nose-dives it leads to hype-inflation, gross unemployment and abject poverty, thereby worsening the nation’s security.

In a statement on Sunday, in Abuja, Okechukwu, who is also, a founding member of All Progressives Congress (APC) decried the dollar rain during the recent Presidential primary of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the National Stadium Abuja.

He cited the withdrawal comments of Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, a financial guru, saying that President Buhari should support the use of consensus method to ensure that the forthcoming APC presidential primary does not follow the PDP’s highest bidder dollar rain.

In his speech before withdrawing from the PDP primary, the former banker, Hayatu-Deen, said, “it is, therefore, based on personal principles and with great humility that I have decided, after wide consultation, to withdraw from this contest, which has been obscenely monetised.”
“Albeit, our sister opposition political party has every constitutional right to elect whoever they want as their flag bearer; the Dollar rain is worrisome as noted by Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who dubbed it obscenely monetised presidential primary.
“Sincerely, I congratulate His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar on his emergence from the opposition party primary. But, as a patriot and stakeholder in the Nigeria project, I am worried by PDP’s induced Dollar Rain, which led to unprecedented depreciation of the naira,” he said.

Therefore, Okechukwu called on Buhari to consider the consensus option to be adopted in the APC presidential primary election to save the naira.

He lamented the monumental harm PDP’s dollar rain did to the nation’s economy, saying “if that could happen in a party with about 731 delegates, imagine what will happen if APC with about 2, 322 delegates is allowed to indulge in Dollar Rain.”

His words: “If the Naira is already bleeding because of dollar rain on 731 delegates; please better imagine the degree of depreciation of the Naira if another blitz of dollar rain is allowed to be splashed on 2,322 delegates? This is the farming season, as such the Buhari’s Agrarian Revolution would also be at risk if the naira is allowed to depreciate further. Prices of fertilizer, seedlings and other farm implements will hit roof top.”
On why he is calling for consensus instead of direct and indirect mode of primary election, which are more democratic than consensus, the DG VON said: “All the three are democratic and are in our law books. Please, is it not paradoxical that the governors, and ex-governors who oppose consensus had adopted same consensus and even outright imposition to select their successors?
To me they have lost the moral high ground to oppose Mr President from adopting such legal mode of primary election. One’s appeal is that politically correct aspirant should be consensually presented.”
Okechukwu dismissed insinuations that with Atiku the APC will not adhere to the rotation convention of electing a presidential candidate of Igbo extraction or a southerner. APC is Brand A1, and we follow the rule of law and rotation convention.
“Methinks His Excellency Atiku Abubakar’s opportunistic victory will have little or no impact on APC’s election of a presidential candidate from among Ndigbo aspirants or by extension the southern belt aspirants. I don’t think Mr President I know even going by consensus will deny the south their turn.”
Reminded of the possibility that with APC Southern presidential candidate Atiku will sweep the northern votes, OKechukwu wondered what new tangible thing Atiku was bringing to the table in the face of prevailing daunting economic scenario.
He said Atiku is used to sharing money, but that today there is little or none to be shared, adding, “Most importantly, one, northern voters are sophisticated, having voted for Chiefs MKO Abiola and Olusegun Obasanjo, with all indicators they will vote southerner this time around so as to shame the PDP for breaching the rotation convention in their constitution.
“Secondly, there are number of northern voters who are patriots who believe sincerely on the ancient doctrine of equity, natural justice and the imperative of unity of our dear country. For going south is the best solution to smoothen the polarization in the land. Thirdly, the dormant Igbo voters in Kano, Lagos and other towns plus core non-Igbo APC voters will be woken up to trounce Waziri Adamawa at the poll.”(NAN

Chairman Southern Senators’ Forum, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, has said that he will not take the decision of the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti to return him back to senate through an unopposed party ticket for granted.

Bamidele made this known in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja on Sunday.

“It is also an acknowledgment by the leadership of the party and members of the party that I could be entrusted with the position of an elected representative of the people and one of the leaders of our people in this tough time.

“It is not that we don’t have equally qualified people or eligible people who can obtain the form.

“But the fact that this has not happened and the leadership of the party has done so much to ensure that I am given a smooth ride to be the candidate of the party, is, to me a sincere and profound effort and from whom much is given, much is also expected.

“It is a call to further and greater duty. I will do everything possible to ensure the unity of the party through meaningful reconciliation where it is still necessary to do so and to ensure to drive a process in which there will be integrity and mutual trust.”
