Nigeria’s cultural integration getting international accolades

Nigeria’s cultural integration getting international accolades Chief Olusegun Runsewe and some of the international delegates at the recent 2022 edition of International Arts and Craft Expo    Nigeria’s cultural integration getting international accolades By Taiye Olayemi, News Agency of Nigeria In view of the divergent cultural heritage across the globe, it has become important to embrace cultural integration and diplomacy to foster understanding across tribes and ensure peace, unity and harmony.

Cultural integration, or referred to as globalisation, is when individuals from one culture adopt practices from another without diminishing their own.

Also, cultural diplomacy is a type of public diplomacy and soft power that includes the exchange of ideas, information, art, language and other aspects of culture among nations and their people to foster mutual understanding.

In recognition of the benefits of cultural integration to national development, Chief Olusegun Runsewe, under his mandate as the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), has created a common ground for world peace.

This has been evident in his numerous contributions to the process of uniting Nigerians with other nationals of the world.

Runsewe has been able to engage people from different races in cultural diplomacy and integration through the annual National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) and the International Arts and Crafts Expo (INAC).

During the 2022 INAC Edition, most of the Ambassadors from other nations commended Runsewe for his unflinching efforts in uniting nationals from other countries with Nigerians through the exploration of culture.

Juan Reus, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Spain, said he was attracted to attend the expo due to the laudable exhibitions held by NCAC over the years.

According to Reus, Runsewe’s contributions to development of world cultures, through INAC, is highly commendable as the Spanish would continue to exhibit in subsequent editions of INAC.

Clara Pulido-Escandell, Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, commended Runsewe’s selfless efforts in ensuring cultural exchange programmes between the Cubans and Nigerians is constantly strengthened.

Pulido-Escandell said this is yielding fruitful results.

David Velasquez, Venezuelan Ambassador to Nigeria said, “It is a honour showcasing our arts and crafts to the world.

This is the strongest opportunity for cultural exchange and collaborations, we should uphold this.

“Otunba Runsewe has been a strong cultural pillar in Nigeria.

We love his commitment toward showcasing cultures across the globe to foster understanding and we appreciate this.

” Runsewe, through his efforts over the years, continues to bag both local and International awards.

Runsewe receiving an award as China Man of the Year 2021 by the Chinese Industrial and Commercial Enterprises Association   Recently, Runsewe was given a commitment award by the Chinese Community in Nigeria, for his selfless commitment to the promotion of arts and culture between Nigeria and China.

He got the award during the Chinese 2022 Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, which was held in Lagos.

Dr Eric Ni, Chairman, Chinese Industrial and Commercial Enterprises Association, said that the Chinese Community had enjoyed seamless cultural exchange programmes, due to the support enjoyed from NCAC and Runsewe.

Dr Matthew Uwaekwe, Co-ordinator, Nigeria-China Business Council, during the ceremony, said that Runsewe emerged the “China Man of the Year” after a voting session within the Chinese consulate.

Uwaekwe said that Runsewe had worked tirelessly to build a strong cultural tourism relationship between Nigeria and China.

He said that Runsewe had in various ways convinced the world that Nigerian culture, in its diversity, had the capacity to foster unity and peace among the people of both countries and the world.

According to him, members of the Chinese community in Nigeria are elated at the pace and passion at which Runsewe brought to bear in his assignment as Nigeria culture chief.

“Otunba Olusegun Runsewe has done well for the country.

He has the vision to promote the cultural relations between China and Nigeria, and we therefore confer on him China Man of the Year Award.

“He has emerged the China Man of the Year after a voting session within the Chinese consulate, so this award is from the Chinese Community,” he said.

Similarly, Runsewe emerged the best promoter and developer of Nigerian culture, arts and crafts.

This was conferred on him by the National Associations of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) during the NANTA Eminent Persons Awards, in 2021, held in Abuja.

Mrs Susan Akporaiye, NANTA’s National President, said that NCAC under the leadership of Runsewe, deserved the award due to the fact that the council also joined in combating COVID-19 pandemic since 2020. She said that while the frontline health workers worked tirelessly to get vaccines for COVID-19 pandemic, the council also went all out to produce local face masks and hand sanitisers, using local products within the country, as a way to help curtail the spread of the virus.

According to Akporiaye, Runsewe also repositioned NAFEST and the International Arts and Crafts Expo (INAC) such that they attract more of local and international tourists.

“Otunba Runsewe has been a pillar of support for us in the travel and tourism industries, when we need his help within the shortest time, he attends to us promptly.

“Aside this, Otunba has helped the nation to properly project and rebrand its local cultural products, which are INAC and NAFEST.

“We have seen large production of face masks and hand sanitisers since 2020, which were produced with our local materials, used to curtail the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

“These are beautiful contributions toward the promotion of culture, arts and crafts and should be appreciated,” she said.

NCAC is just one of the numerous parastatals, established by the Federal Government, with the responsibility to promote culture and tourism.

When other parastatals wake up to their responsibilities, like NCAC, Nigeria will definitely be a choice destination for tourism and leisure.

Around 500 world dignitaries to descend on London for queen’s funeral

Nearly 500 dignitaries from around the world are set to descend on London to pay their last respects to the long-reigning monarch alongside members of the Royal family in one of the largest diplomatic moments of the century.

They will join members of the Royal family, UK prime ministers past and present, and key figures from public life at Westminster Abbey – the historic church that can hold around 2,000 people – at 11am next Monday.

“This is the biggest international event we have hosted in decades,” a Whitehall source said.

The source compared the logistical task to organising “hundreds of state visits” within a matter of days.

Normally, there might only be two or three a year.

It presents a huge logistical, diplomatic and security challenge, with practice runs taking place in the dead of night.

Invitations were sent over the weekend to the heads of state of nations with which the UK has diplomatic relations.

For most countries, that means the head of state plus one guest.

So, who can we expect to see attend Her Majesty’s funeral on Monday, September 19?

The late Queen’s four children – King Charles III, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – will be present at the funeral, as well as their respective spouses: Camilla, the Queen Consort; Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Sir Tim Laurence.

The Duke of York’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, is also expected to attend.

The late Queen’s grandchildren will also be in attendance at the service – Prince William, Price Harry, Peter Phillips, Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Spouses of close family, including Catherine, the Princess of Wales and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex will pay their respects too.

Other Royals expected to attend the funeral ceremony include Queen Elizabeth II’s cousins: the Duke of Kent, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester.

Monarchs from across the world will also fly into London to pay their respects.

Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia have been confirmed as guests, while former king and queen Juan Carlos and Sofía have been invited.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway and Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco have all confirmed their attendances.

Other members from Europe’s royal families will also be in attendance, including Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Greece.

Her Majesty met with countless world leaders during her 70-year reign and many of these politicians are expected to attend her state funeral.

The recently appointed prime minister, Liz Truss, will attend, as well as the Labour party leader, Sir Keir Starmer.

Both the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, and the Irish premier, Michael Martin, have also confirmed they will be travelling to London for the service.

President Joe Biden has said he will be present, with his wife, First Lady Jill Biden.

    The former U.

    S. presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama will also not be attending, the White House confirmed on Monday.

European leaders who will be in attendance include the French president Emmanuel Macron, the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Italian president Sergio Mattarella and Finland’s Sauli Niinisto – the latter as per his presidential statement.

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President, Charles Michel, will also attend.

Other world leaders who are also expected to be present are New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern, as well as her Australian and Canadian counterparts Anthony Albanese and Justin Trudeau.

Australia’s Governor-General David Hurley will also be joining, as will Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro.

Yoon Suk-Yeol’s office confirmed the South Korean president’s attendance.

A representative of North Korea will be allowed to attend the funeral.

Britain and North Korea established diplomatic relations in 2000 after 60 years without embassies.

However, Kim Jong Un, the country’s leader, rarely travels abroad and is unlikely to attend.

The Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will travel to Britain to attend.

Traditionally, a Japanese emperor stays away from funerals whether at home or abroad because of a cultural belief based in the Shinto religion that considers death impure.

The decision for Naruhito to attend the Queen’s funeral underscores the importance and the deep bond between the royal families.

HH Amir Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Emir of Qatar, will also be attending the funeral, according to a source familiar with the Qatari leadership.

Israel’s president will be present, however the prime minister will not attend.

Although Iran’s Supreme Leader will not be attending, the BBC’s James Lansdale confirmed that the country would be represented at an ambassadorial level.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will attend “if the schedule allows”.

Four leaders of Pacific Commonwealth nations will join the Australian Prime Minister at the Queen’s funeral.

Anthony Albanese told a press conference shortly before midday local time on Wednesday that the leaders of the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Samoa and Papua New Guinea have accepted Australia’s offer of help with transportation to London.

The delegation, which is due to leave on Thursday evening, will also include governor-general David Hurley as well as 10 Australian citizens “who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities”.

Her Majesty relied on many close staff, such as her ladies-in-waiting and footmen, who will most likely also be in attendance to pay their respects to the late Queen.

All holders of the Victoria Cross or George Cross will be able to attend the Queen’s funeral, the PA news agency understands.

Invitations to the Queen’s funeral have not been sent to Russia, Belarus and Myanmar.

Russia has not been invited because of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, diplomatic sources said.

According to Dmitry Peskov, although “Russians respected her for her wisdom”, Putin’s attendance at the late Queen’s funeral “is not being considered”.

Venezuela and Syria are not invited because Britain does not have full diplomatic relations with them, The Telegraph understands.

No representatives from Afghanistan will be invited because of the current political situation there.

The seating plan will be determined after the RSVP deadline on Thursday.

China to open market for Nigeria’s art, crafts — envoy

Mr Li Xuda, Cultural Counselor of the China Cultural Centre, Abuja says China will open its market to Nigeria for the West African country to export its art and crafts in the nearest future.

Li made the announcement while speaking to the diplomatic correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the 15th International Arts and Crafts Expo (INAC) in Abuja on Sunday.

NAN reports that the 2022 INAC Expo, organised by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) has the theme “Networking Nigerian Crafts to the World”.

Li said that China was willing to support Nigeria in showcasing its rich culture, arts and crafts to the world and to build stronger relationship between Nigeria and China.

“From today so many things impressed me.

I see the beautiful dance, the drums; the music; the arts and crafts.

‘I see that China in the future will open its market to Nigeria so that Nigerian arts and crafts will be exported to China and to invite your dancers to perform in China.

“You know, China and Nigeria have similar cultural activities as well as traditional cultural exchanges.

“We have also hosted cultural activities like cultural week, drawing competition to learn about our two countries, to showcase their talents and at the same time we will support Nigeria cultural events.

“We will build our friendship and let the people of both countries know each other so that our relationship will be better and stronger,” Li said.

The diplomatic community and some ambassadors at the event also commended the Director-General of the NCAC, Otunba Segun Runsewe, for organising the expo, which they described as a unifying factor.

The Ambassador of Venezuela to Nigeria, Mr David Caraballo, said that Venezuela and Nigeria had similar culture and food and that staging the expo would strengthen cultural ties between both countries.

“It is our fourth year, participating in this important international activity, organised by the National Council for Arts and Culture of Nigeria.

“Venezuela and Nigeria have strong roots of similar culture, food, history, music and dance and this opportunity every year is important, especially after the pandemic and after COVID-19 restrictions.

“In this expo, we present different products of Venezuela, the exportable products, like food products and services as well as products like chocolates and foods for daily use.

“We are preparing to attend the upcoming Abuja International Trade Fair in October,” Caraballo added.

Mr Wendel De Landro, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to Nigeria, pledged his support to Runsewe in promoting the annual event, which he said had been a means of unifying countries and cultures in Nigeria.

“One of my goals here is supporting schools in Nigeria.

So we are bringing back from the diaspora back to Africa, what we got from Africans coming across with the drums.

“Culture is universal, see what happened when they say come and dance, you see everybody dancing.

“Music, whether they do not understand what they are saying, you see everybody dancing and this is what Otunba is doing by not only bringing unity in Nigeria of different cultures but from other countries.

“We hope it is going to continue and definitely every year, I am going to support him,” De Landro said.

NAN reports that 25 countries and eight states in the federation participated in the expo.
