Governor Udom Emmanuel wants adequate sensitization on the currency redesign by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to checkmate negative impacts on its end users, especially traders in the rural and riverine communities.
He made the advocacy while addressing worshippers at the January 2023 edition of Government House Prayer Summit, held at Latter House Chapel, Governor’s Lodge, Uyo on Saturday.
The governor, who applauded the currency rebranding initiative, however, viewed it as hasty and inconsiderate, particularly on the infrastructure gap and peculiarities of the vast rural and riverine population, called for caution against stifling grassroots economy in trying to implement an otherwise welcome development.
Observing that the old currency notes were already becoming scarce while the new ones were yet to be adequately circulated, the governor expressed worries over poor sensitization in rural and riverine communities. He feared that those communities may continue to trade with the old notes only to be stranded in their transactions with the city dwellers.
“…my question is, people staying in the creeks to do fishing, bringing their aquatic produce to the beach market to sell are expected to transact through a POS terminal, how will they buy food stuff and other things in the creeks they are returning to, considering the cost of food. We can actually mix these things up and make life a bit easier,” he posited.
He said considerations should be given to infrastructure gap and some socio-economic peculiarities while introducing developments that work in economies where people pay things as little as taxi fare through electronic means, maintaining that such decisions should not be rushed due to political underpinnings without consideration for the welfare of the generality of the people.
On the upcoming elections, Governor Emmanuel said Nigeria’s elite were to be blamed if, in their choice of a person to run the affairs of a country with over 200 million people, they ignore the criteria they consider in recruiting a Managing Director or Chief Executive Officer of a business enterprise.
He, therefore, sued for prayers for peace to reign in the country and for God to guide Nigerians in their choices, to avoid upheavals in the general elections.
At the well-attended prayer summit, which featured praise and worship session, intercessory prayers, choir renditions and ministration, Bishop Nick Iheanacho of the Arise Fellowship International Church, Uyo, preached on “Keys of Power”, culled from Matt: 16: 19.
The cleric urged Christians to exercise their power through prayers and fasting while seeking the face of God.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday boycotted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign rally held by Atiku Abubakar in Ibadan, the state capital.
Mr Makinde is one of the five dissident governors of the PDP who have been staying away from Atiku’s campaigns.
The governors are demanding the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, as a condition to support Atiku’s presidential ambition.
The rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan started around noon and ended around 4 p.m.
The presidential candidate, Atiku, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, were accompanied to the rally by five state governors. They are Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel.
National leaders of the party that attended the rally include former Vice President Namadi Sambo, the wife of the presidential candidate, Titi Abubakar, and a former senator from Kogi State, Dino Melaye.
Governor Adeleke, while addressing the rally, expressed optimism that the PDP presidential candidate will be victorious in all the six South-west states in the election.
The party currently has only two governors in the region, including Mr Adeleke who was elected in July after defeating the incumbent governor of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I have seen the high level of turnout and goodwill the PDP enjoys across Yorubaland. This was demonstrated in Osun State when I was massively voted into office. The light of grace started in Osun and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is spreading it to all parts of South West and Nigeria,” he said.
“Yorubas will support Atiku/Okowa candidacy because he is the most experienced, most tested, and the most stable to protect the interests of all Nigerians. Yorubas want an all-inclusive Nigeria and only Atiku can deliver on that,” he added.
“Osun State will vote PDP. Same for Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, and Lagos states. Atiku’s blueprint is the only one that can take Nigeria out of the wood”, Governor Adeleke declared.
Governor Adeleke urged Nigerians to vote massively for the PDP presidential candidate in the February presidential election.
“Next month is around the corner. Vote PDP at all levels. Secure your future. Osun people have shown the template. We must copy Osun State. Osun State hosts the cradle of Yorubaland and Osun is now PDP enjoying rule of law, due process, and good governance.

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has urged politicians not to threaten the unity of Nigeria in their quest to capture power.
Emmanuel who spoke during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in Uyo on Sunday said the nation’s fallen heroes paid the price for peace and harmony in the country, therefore the political class should reciprocate the gesture with unity, justice, equality, fairness and love.
He said: “As we get ready to elect our new set of leaders, I urge our political class to understand that we need the country to be one indissoluble entity, in order for our aspirations for leadership to be actualized.
“We must not threaten the unity of this nation for the narrow desire to be in power. If these gallant men and women paid the ultimate price for us to remain in peace and harmony, we must also pay them a corresponding price of appreciation and gratitude by ensuring that the cords of our unity, justice, equality, fairness and love remain our abiding articles of faith.”
The governor explained that the nation’s diversity is being exploited for narrow political advantage, and encouraged Nigerians to extend the frontiers of love and brotherhood so the sacrifices of the gallant fallen officers will not be in vain.
He said: “As we honour these great patriots, let us be reminded that the factors that led to the various wars they participated in, or the internal operations to secure our peace for which they paid with their lives are still with us.
“All across the nation, some rhetoric that enlarge the chasm of separation and weaken the cords of our national unity are still being propagated and amplified through various echo- chambers.
“We should fan the embers of our unity deeper and extend the frontiers of love and brotherhood further, so the sacrifices of these gallant officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces we have come here today to honour, will not be in vain.”
Governor Emmanuel also commended security agencies in the state for the peace and security enjoyed in Akwa Ibom, noting that he has carried out some projects in appreciation.
The projects he mentioned include the remodelling and construction of 168 blocks of flat for the Nigerian Army Battalion in Ibagwa, with water reticulation; construction of internal roads and residential blocks of flats at the 2nd Brigade of the Nigerian Army Headquarters in Mbiokporo, Nsit Ibom, as well as the donation of gunboats for Marine Response Unit.
He stated that these projects earned Akwa Ibom ‘Nigeria’s Best Security and Safety State’ during the last African Security Summit in Banjul, Gambia, last November.

In his 2019 manifesto labeled "Phase 2: Master Plan 2019-2023," also known as the "Completion Agenda," Governor Udom Emmanuel outlined eight areas on which to focus his administration's efforts. They are based on industrialization, aviation development, rural and riverside development, agriculture, human capacity development, security, infrastructure, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
While delivering his inaugural address for the start of his second term, Emmanuel said: “One of the key drivers of the economy around the world is the provision of modern infrastructure facilities. We will pursue this policy with messianic zeal. In my first term, we were able to build more than 1,000 kilometers of highways across the state and open up the interior to the free flow of goods and services. We will surpass this achievement with an emphasis on commercially viable highways. We will continue to invest heavily in the electricity sector, aware of the importance of having a constant electricity supply in our industrialization agenda. We look forward to working towards having power for all in our Completion Agenda.” This article looks at how Udom has fulfilled his promises in terms of infrastructure development in the state.
According to the World Bank's February 2021 press release, “85 million Nigerians do not have access to the electricity grid. This represents 43% percent of the country's population and makes Nigeria the country with the largest energy access deficit in the world. The lack of reliable power is a major constraint for citizens and businesses, leading to annual economic losses estimated at $26.2 billion (₦10.1 trillion), which is equivalent to about 2 percent of GDP. According to the World Bank's Doing Business report 2020, Nigeria ranks 171 out of 190 countries in obtaining electricity and access to electricity is considered one of the main constraints for the private sector." This report underlines the importance of the role of the supply and the constant supply of electricity in the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
Rapid industrialization, improved living standards, sustainable economic growth, steadily declining unemployment rates, and poverty are the results that stem from consistent access to quality, reliable electricity. The administration headed by Udom Emmanuel is committed to improving the power supply in Akwa Ibom, hence the massive electrification projects he has undertaken.
Some of the outstanding projects are the construction of the 2 X 5 MVA, 3/11 KV Injection substation, on Avenida Edet Akpan, Uyo; the construction of a 2 X 15 MVA injection substation at Victor Attah International Airport, the construction of a 2 X 60 MVA 132/33 KV power substation at Ekim, Mkpat Enin. Likewise, the administration has carried out the rehabilitation of the facilities of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution company in Etim Ekpo, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Ekene, Ikot Abasi Ekpu, the installation of a transmission substation of 1 X 60 MVA, 132/33 KV in Afaha Ube, Itam. In addition, it carried out the extension of the public power supply through a 33 KV dedicated line that extends from the Tropicana shopping center to the Victor Attah International Airport, the extension of the public power supply through a dedicated line of 33 KV to the Center for Control/Isolation of Infectious Diseases, Methodist Hospital, Ituk Mbang as well as the installation of public lighting in the state capital, Uyo.
Road infrastructure plays a crucial role in the economic development and growth of any society. Highways are like arteries through which the economy beats. By linking producers to markets, workers to jobs, students to school, and the sick to hospitals, roads are vital to any development program. In addition, providing access to employment, social, health and education services makes a road network crucial in the fight against poverty. Highways open up more areas and stimulate economic and social development. For these reasons and many more, road infrastructure is one of the most important public goods of a government. This is a fact that Emmanuel understands, hence the importance he attaches to road infrastructure.
Road construction has been done on a massive scale in the administration. Some of the road projects include the completion of the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene dualized highway, the construction of the 6.4 km Nto Edino-Ekwere Azu highway with 2 bridges of 45 m span at Obot Akara LGA. In the same local government is the construction of the Nto Ide-Ikot Aruba bridge with an 80 m access road. One of the local residents had this to say about the project: “People lost their lives because of the bad bridge and road. People used to fall off the bridge. Access to the nearest hospital from Ubon Akwa and Abak Ukpom was not possible due to this bad bridge. The bridge was a threat to the people of Obot Akara, but now we are very hopeful that the construction of a new bridge for us will be successful. God will bless Governor Udom for this one act that he has performed today in Obot Akara.”
Another noteworthy road project in Ikono local government is the construction of 21.5 km of Ikot Anyan Ediene Ikot Ntia-Urua Nara-Ikot Nseyen Nkwot Nung Ukim Road with a 45 m beam bridge. Regarding this project, a local resident said: “This road was very bad. It was not capable of motoring. We had to find alternative routes and garbage trucks to get to other places. The importance of this new road is that the merchants in our community who were unable to travel to Ikot Ekpene will now be able to use this road to travel for their business. More development will be introduced to our community due to this new highway. Our Governor is a promise keeper. Not long ago he promised us this way, and now, he has come to manifest himself. May God bless our Governor."
The Emmanuel administration also completed the doubling of the 29 km Etinan-Ndon Eyo highway with bridges and spurs from Mbioto Ekpene Ituen to the Ikot Abasi Ishiet junction, doubling of the 23.4 km Etinan-Eket road, doubling of 19.5 km Eket-Ibeno Road Road, with bridges, dualization of 9.5 km Ring Road 3 (from Aka Road-Oron Road-Nwaniba Road with roundabouts), duplication of Ring Road 2 of 9.5 km 3.32 km (from Abak Road-Akan Road via Udo Udoma roundabout) and as the construction of the 14.1 km Odoro Ikpe/Ikot Nkon Obotme Arochukwu road with a 110 m span bridge located at the local government from Ini. Speaking about the immense impact of the project, a local resident said: “The Udom government has done well to build this road for us. We used to suffer with the bad way we had. It was very difficult for us to transport our agricultural products to the market. We carried bags of cassava on our heads and we walked down to the market because the road was not passable and we couldn't find motorcycles, so we walked from one place to another every day. But now, Governor Udom has given us a new path, and we are happy for the path that he has made for us, and now we can find cars and motorcycles that we can enter from one side of the market to the other.”
In addition, the administration has undertaken construction of 19 km Etebi-Enwang highway in Esit Eket and Mbo local governments, construction of 12 742 km Awa Iman-Asong-Ikot Edim-Ikot Emem highway in local governments of Onna and Mkpat Enin, the construction of a 19,317 km Anua-Mbak-Ishiet road, as well as the construction of the 15 km Ikot Akpan Afaha-Ikot Oku Usng road in Ukanafun local government and the expansion of Oron Road from Ring 3 to Victor Attah International Airport Road. Akwa Ibom State University has also been a beneficiary of administration with the construction of internal roads in and around its Obio Akpa campus. Also included is the completion of the State Secretariat Annex in Uyo (also known as the Dakkada Secretariat). Speaking about the impact of the project, Ms. Glory Essien, Head of Department of Labour, Ministry of Labor and Manpower Planning, said: “As back then, it was a den of thieves…a lot of bad things used to happen. In fact, people used to isolate this area completely because it was a dangerous area. But now, it's a beautiful place, now it's used by public officials. It is the good work of our dear Governor, His Excellency, Governor Gabriel Emmanuel Udom”.
The last seven years of the present administration have been one in which the government has consistently delivered the dividends of democracy. Just as the path of the just is like the bright light, shining brighter and brighter until the perfect day, the indigenous people of Akwa Ibom State can look forward to a better and brighter future in the final year of Emmanuel's administration.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, described the recently concluded XIII Biennial Police Games in Uyo as a strategic internal security tool, which will further the cause of internal security by bringing the Police closer to the people.
In its closing remarks at the Games, IGP said that through the Games, great new sports talents have been discovered that will have a national impact.
He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the Force, as well as praised Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel for organizing the event successfully.
He said the games have prepared the Nigerian Police, which he described as the country's top security agency, for the upcoming elections.
The IGP also added that the games have provided mental agility, physical fitness and also ensured that officers are combat-ready to secure life and property.
Governor Emmanuel, represented by his deputy Moses Ekpo, said that the Games, in addition to generating a healthy spirit of competition among the athletes, have also developed a team spirit and esprit de corps among the officers and men of the Force.
.
In his remarks, Force Sport Planning Committee Chairman/Sole Administrator AIG Hafiz Inuwa said that the 13th Biennial Police Games, courtesy of IGP, have showcased its rich sporting tradition with the discovery of budding stars with great potential.
He said the theme of this year's Games, 'Promoting sporting excellence to ensure fitness for operational demands and combat readiness', was well thought out.
Governor Udom Emmanuel has been nominated as the Governor with the best Economic Blueprint in Africa.
The award will be presented to him during The African Regional Journal (TARJ) Forum and Trade Fair (Luanda 2022) by the West African Regional Magazine at InterContinental Hotel, Luanda, Angola.
With the theme: “The Significance of Unity-in-Diversity in the Integration of Africa”, the event will be held during this year’s listing of 100 inspiring individuals in Africa, with a focus on promoting made-in-Africa products and connecting African businesses.
A statement by the organisers reads: “Emmanuel’s visionary leadership, with a business-inclined disposition and private-sector approach to governance, is contributing factor to the transformation of Akwa Ibom into an enterprise state.
“This was captured in a blueprint that offered an amenable roadmap to achieving renaissance along the routes of job creation, wealth creation, poverty alleviation, infrastructural consolidation and expansion and eco-political inclusion.
”
A letter, addressed to the governor by Ambassador Rossette Aliu Squire, states in part: “Upon assumption of office, His Excellency, you set up a remodelling committee to engender a social contract and a technical committee on Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) to promote, midwife and enhance the flow of investments into Akwa Ibom.
“The result is a horde of firms, including the largest syringe manufacturing factory in Africa, electrical digital metering solutions manufacturing factory, rice mill, coconut oil processing plant and flour mill, to mention a few.
“Added to the volley of strategic partnerships, the result is the emergence of hundreds of businesses, and thousands of jobs with ripple and multiplier effects that phenomenally impact the livelihoods of Akwabomites and Nigerians.
You created a uniqueness of the investment environment of this enterprise state that allows for the evolution of capsuling in some very capital-intensive industries that have either comparative advantage, absolute advantage or technological advantage.
”
The awards organisers maintained that every part of the state has been uplifted under Emmanuel’s leadership, including the healthcare sector, infrastructural, education, and many more, adding that the state is, indeed, emerging into an aviation hub with a viable airline, and a modern smart terminal building almost completed.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has winged 17 young pilots who successfully completed their various flying training courses.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
According to him, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, while winging the pilots, during the opening of the 2022 Air Operational Seminar in Uyo, implored them to be prepared for the arduous task ahead.
The CAS said that there was no better way to launch them into their operational flying career than to have them draw from the rich operational experiences of seasoned pilots during the seminar.
He said that the seminar will facilitate discussions on germane issues relevant to air operations.
Amao specifically reminded them to always adhere to laid down Rules of Engagement while also taking all necessary steps to protect civilians and minimise casualties during operations.
“The efforts to mitigate civilian casualties are not just a reflection of NAF values as a service, but also strategically imperative to our operations,” he added.
The CAS assured Nigerians that the nation’s Armed Forces had so far made significant gains in curtailing and degrading the miscreants that seek to destabilise Nigeria.
He particularly commended the efforts of NAF at unleashing the coercive effects of air power, particularly on insurgents through intensive air interdiction of their locations and facilities.
“These punitive strikes have degraded their resources, disrupted their supply lines and denied them their freedom of movement,” Amao said.
The theme of the seminar is “Harnessing Nigerian Air Force Combat Experience in Joint Military Operations for Doctrinal Development”.
Amao explained that the theme was borne out of the need to draw instructions from the diverse and rich air combat experiences, to develop sound doctrinal principles to guide future engagements.
This, he added, was largely because lessons learnt from previous campaigns remained veritable sources of inputs for doctrinal development.
“Hence, the need to reappraise our past operational successes and failures to restrategise towards a more operationally effective NAF that can contribute to expeditiously ending the current scourge of insecurity.
”
Amao stressed the need for the participants to take cognisance of the dynamism and complexities of the ever-changing security environment.
He also charged them to adopt strategies that would promote NAF’s retention of credible air power capability to prosecute current and future warfare.
In his remarks, the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Mr Udom Emmanuel, said that NAF has lived up to its statutory responsibilities over the years, considering its successful exploits in Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Gambia and Mali.
This, Emmanuel said, had tremendously accorded great international recognition for the country.
He added that the professionalism of NAF under the leadership of Amao has further given the country a sense of hope and security.
The governor acknowledged the great sacrifices that Nigeria’s prestigious serving and retired airmen have made and continue to make towards the peace and progress of the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on the sidelines of the event, NAF would on Oct. 28, be conducting Sea Exercise using some selected NAF aircraft.
The aim of the exercise is to showcase the capabilities of NAF as well as its presence in the ongoing air operations against crude oil theft in the South-South region of the country.
It is also to improve aircrew skills in tactical aspects of maritime operations thus enhancing their capabilities.
