Kate Forbes, who is currently Scotland's Finance Secretary and one of three candidates to replace Nicola Sturgeon as both first minister and SNP leader, is coming under sustained fire for her religious beliefs.
She has said that she would not have voted for gay marriage and that having a child out of wedlock "would be wrong according to my faith" but that it was a choice for people to make in a free society.
Ms Forbes also said she would "celebrate" the birth of children to family members and friends who are unmarried.
Asked if she was committed to continuing her campaign, Ms Forbes said "at the moment, yes."
She added that she was committed to it "as of now" until the ballot for Ms Sturgeon's replacement closes on March 27.
In response to Ms Forbes' comments on same-sex marriage, Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of the Government which passed the legislation, said her opinion was well known and that she wouldn't support any candidate in the leadership race.
Ivan McKee, who had supported Ms Forbes, said he would be talking to her about the campaign.
When asked what she thought of Ms Forbes’ comments Humza Yousaf said "It's for her to defend her views, I've made my views very clear," and that he would always fight for the equal rights of others.
Ash Regan, another candidate in the race, indicated her support for same-sex marriage simply stating "love is love."
Ms Forbes also said she would not have voted for the Scottish Government’s Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill in its current form.
Humza Yousaf is in support of it, however, and said he would challenge the order from the UK Government which had vetoed it.
Gillian Martin, the convener of Holyrood’s Health Committee, said she can no longer support Ms Forbes due to her views on same-sex marriage.
Ms Forbes has said she has tried “to answer straight questions with straight answers" when discussing her religious views.
She stressed that in a pluralistic and tolerant society, she would defend "everybody's right to live and love free of harassment, fear and prejudice".
Overall, despite the recent controversy, Ms Forbes stated that she is currently still running to be Scotland's next first minister.
