SWAN hails Dare’s commitment to sports devt.

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in the FCT has commended the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, for his contributions to sports development in the country.

This followed his presidential recognition with an award at Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service (NESPS).

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the award was personally handed to him by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday for his efforts at championing government’s investment in youth and sports development.

SWAN Chairman in the FCT, Ndubueze Chidoka, in a congratulatory message on Sunday in Abuja described the minister as a trail blazer.

“Chief Sunday Dare has written his name in gold as long as human and physical sports infrastructure are concerned.

“When he came on board and rolled out his plans, many were skeptical, wondering how he will actualise his vision within a short time.

“His Adopt-An-Athlete and Adopt-A-Pitch programmes have worked wonders.

With the programmes, the various stadia in Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan, among others, are getting deserved attention,” he said.

Chidoka said that the various policies of the government had helped Nigerian athletes perform better at the global stage.

“Nigeria fared very well at the last Olympics and Commonwealth Games, with athletes dazzling the world with high performance.

“We, as members of the sporting media, have been watching and taking note of all these.

“We can only implore him to keep up his good works to enable Nigerian sports gain greater momentum,” he added.

The SWAN chairman, however, stressed the need for all hands to be on deck to take sports to the next level.

Lagos SWAN petitions security bodies, House of Assembly over alleged intimidation

The Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has lodged a petition with the Commissioner of Police in the state.

The SWAN chapter also sent copies of the petition to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the state’s House of Assembly (LAHA).

Bunmi Ogunyale, the chapter’s Secretary, disclosed in a statement that the petition was over alleged intimidation by a group who claimed to be “Caretaker Committee”.

“This group has been parading itself as caretaker committee of the Lagos chapter of the association in spite of an existing court order,” he said.

Ogunyale said the petition became more imperative following plans by the group to hold what he described as a “kangaroo election on Tuesday.

”This is in furtherance of their contempt of court and total disrespect for court order.

” He stated that any support from the Police or any other security agency for this group, by providing personnel for such an illegal and unlawful gathering, would be “a clear breach of subsisting order of the court.

”It will tantamount to contempt of the court,” Ogunyale said on behalf of Lagos State SWAN.

He pointed out that a petition had earlier been written on behalf of Lagos Chapter of SWAN by Salami T.

    Agbaje ESQ.

“This latest attempt by this group is a blatant disobedience of a binding mandatory order barring disputing parties from taking any step in the subject matter until Monday, Oct. 17, 2022, and it was delivered on July 27. “This was sequel to suit number 1652022 filed by Lagos SWAN pending before the Administrative Judge of National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Lagos Division, Honourable Justice M.

    N.

    Esowe.

”It is between Adebowale Olajire Oshundun and others against Aaron Akerejola, Olatutu Oladunni, Oluwole Alakija and others.

“The petition was copied to the Director, DSS, Lagos State Command, Honourable Justice M.

N Esowe, National Industrial Court, Ikoyi; Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Alusa.

“Also copied were the Assistant Inspector General, Zone 2, Onikan and the Nigerian Union of Journalists.

” Ogunyale added that Lagos SWAN has that the self-styled Caretaker Committee has continued to intimidate law-abiding members of the Association with the help of the police.

The chapter alleged that the Police in Lagos state “have been giving cover to the group following the invasion and forceful take-over of the chapter’s secretariat” situated inside the National Stadium in Lagos on Feb. 11. The petition then urged the Lagos State Police Command to refuse any invitation to provide personnel to aid the group to conduct what it described as unlawful and illegal elections.

”Such will be a brazen assault on the rule of law.

NUJ urges Lagos Speaker to disregard award from illegal SWAN body

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) says the awards given to some persons by a group of Lagos-based sports writers were in disregard of a court order and therefore fraudulent.

The NUJ Lagos State Council, in a statement by the Chairman, Adeleye Ajayi, and Secretary, Tunde Olalere, on Tuesday in Lagos said the group illegally constituted themselves into a caretaker committee.

“Our attention was drawn to the spate of awards being given by some people, who illegally constituted themselves into caretaker committee of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Lagos State.

“It was shocking to read in the news of the award given to the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, by the purported caretaker committee group.

“Therefore, we have decided to inform members of the public that the Debo Osundun-led executive committee of Lagos SWAN was duly sworn in by the Council on March 26, 2021 and it is also duly recognised by the national secretariat of NUJ,” the council said.

It noted that it was unfortunate that while the NUJ leadership was making efforts to return peace and harmony to Lagos SWAN, some people were bent on creating problems.

“Moreso, in view of the legal suit between the Debo Osundun-led executive committee and the self-proclaimed caretaker committee, giving award at this time is pure contempt of court.

“We, therefore, urge government officials and other members of the public to disregard any award from any SWAN caretaker committee,” the NUJ said.

Meanwhile, several Lagos SWAN members have reacted to the purported award given to Lagos Speaker by the illegal group calling itself “caretaker committee”.

Dapo Sotuminu, a former Lagos SWAN executive committee member, described the award as fraudulent, wondering what manner of award would be given by an illegal group.

“It’s total nonsense from an illegal Caretaker Committee set up by SWAN Incorporated, which is different from SWAN under the national NUJ.

    “It’s a shame.

Lagos SWAN should declare all the actors persona non grata,” he said.

Damilola Fadugba, a female member of SWAN, said it was unfortunate that an illegal group could deceive the Speaker with their fake award.

For Ifeanyi Chukwuma, it was not possible for an award to be given out by Lagos SWAN to people without the approval of the full congress.

Another member, Festus Omoruyi, noted that the persons in the photograph taken where the award was given to the Speaker were not members of SWAN in Lagos.

He therefore called on those close to the Speaker to inform him of the illegality of the award so that he could reject same.

“Despite the fact that we know death is inevitable, we are saddened by the demise of Tallest, as he’s fondly called.

“He was a gentle and easy going journalist during his active years and a man of peace, who promoted peaceful coexistence among members in Kwara.

“We will surely miss Tallest and we pray Allah to grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement said.

It also quoted the Kwara SWAN Chairman, Malam Jimoh Bashir, describing Salami as a very nice and fine journalist, who always do his job with finesse.

Bashir said Salami’s death is a huge loss to the sports writing family in Kwara, adding that he will be remembered for always promoting peace among members.

FCT SWAN demands public apology, compensation from FG for D’Tigress

The FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has asked the Federal Government to urgently tender a public apology to the senior women national basketball team, D’Tigress.

FCT SWAN, in a communique issued shortly after its Congress on Thursday in Abuja, also asked government to compensate the team.

It said both the government and its agent, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, needed to do so because they have made the players to suffer losses.

”They were responsible for the team’s non-participation at the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup, through the two-year withdrawal of Nigeria from international basketball which was later overturned.

”The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the decision robbed the team of participation in the World Cup which begins later this month, with Mali being drafted in to replace Nigeria and represent Africa.

The communique was signed by the Drafting Committee put in place for the Congress, comprising Niyi Busari!

    Samuel Ejegwa and Calister Enegele.

In the communique, FCT SWAN also lauded the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development on Nigeria’s participation in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

It said the support and encouragement given to athletes who represented Nigeria at the Birmingham  Commonwealth Games helped in recording great successes.

“It was an outing which in the long run came to be rated as Nigeria’s best since the inception of the Games,” FCT SWAN said.

It further congratulated the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Congress for not elongating the tenure of the present Executive Committee members.

“By setting up the apparatus for elections to hold on Sept. 30, the NFF deserves commendation,” FCT SWAN stated.

Abuja soccer fans hail Falconets, urge team to break Jinx

Abuja soccer fans hail Falconets, urge team to break Jinx Abuja soccer fans hail FalconNAN) Some football enthusiasts in Abuja  have hailed Nigeria’s under-20 National Women’s Football Team’s brilliant performance in the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica. The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the Falconets are paired in Group C along France, South Korea  and Canada.

They began their campaign on Aug. 12 in their group stage with a 1-0 win over France and on Sunday, defeated South Korea 1-0. The goal against South Korea  on Sunday was scored by Esther  Oniyenezide, in the 83rd minute, the only goal that pushed them to top of the group.

They are expected to play the final group stage on Thursday against Canada.

Speaking in separate interviews with NAN in Abuja  on Tuesday, the soccer enthusiasts said the team had done the country proud and urged  team to break the Jinx by lifting the title.

Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT Chapter, Bunmi Haruna, said the girls performed extremely good.

For them to win two consecutive games at the World Cup is a bravo.

He said It was nice to see the Falconets win two consecutive games at the World Cup.“ The world cup is the biggest stage of football, so to achieve two wins in a row is no fluke.

Kudos goes to the coaches and players for making the country proud.

He advised them to keep it tight and remain focused, to reach their set up target.

Assistant coach, National under-17 Team, Haruna Ilerika said the girls were seriously trying their best.

Coach Ilerika urged them to keep the flag flying because It was not easy to have played two matches and won.

“We are not sure of qualification yet even though we think we have qualified but till after the last group game that is when we know and we could say whether if we have qualified or not,” he said.

However, the system and strategies adopted by the team in the first two games showed that they had lots of qualities in training and the coaches in the team did wonderfully well on the girls.

He said the players’ marking abilities were excellent, observing that they attacked in mass and didn’t loose focus and their recovery rate was superb.

“ They have this ability to be able to chase the opponent around and don’t allow the opponents to play.

He said the approach made them to subdue  their opponents from playing because they knew most of these opponents’  tactics and  were quite good in ball distribution,  compared to any African side.

“ They were able to frustrate both Korean and France teams from their techniques and allowed them to resort to playing our own techniques because the more we frustrated them the more it becomes advantage to us in the game .

“ They ( falconets) are now becoming a dangerous team to play, which makes them a good team.

The spirit of oneness in the team, let it continue,” he said.

“Falconets are playing on Thursday, if we get a draw at most, but if we win, we are happy.

“ We have played in the past; we played on the final twice and much is expected of them.

I want to wish them best of luck as they go out in their next game,” he said.

A teacher and football lover, Oluwaseun Adetunberu, urged the falconets to keep their eyes on winning the title.

He said next stage  of the competition  would  be our challenges and this would be tougher than those they had surmounted.

The teacher said the girls had made Nigerians proud on the basics but the only means was for them to lift the title.

He said that government had been supportive because they knew the team could  deliver.

“ 10th appearance is not just a thing to hammer on but victory is what we need.

You girls  are performing  to expectations but the only expectations is for you to raise your country’s flags and colour,” he said.

Chisoba Okechukwu, an optometrist and football lover, said that the falconets had highly technical  midfielders capable of dictating the tempo of play with quick passing and movement.

He said no game was ever easy but the game was only getting harder and more intense.

He advised the team to ensure that they scored more points in first half, rather than late goals“ This is the 10th appearance, we hope you could fight that back by winning the title for the first time.

We want you to achieve that years awaiting.

Halima Yashim, a student of University of Abuja and football lover,  said that tougher matches were still ahead.

She said the girls needed to up their game in defence because they would meet Spain  or  United States who would be hard nuts to crack, as a fleet-footed team.

He said those teams could spoil the day for our team if care was not taken.

NAN reports that Falconets match against Canada  comes up on Thursday at 03.00 a.

Ondo football forum seeks proper board for ODSFA

Ondo State Football Stakeholders Forum has called on the Ondo State Government to set up a properly constituted board for the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) in line with the enabling law establishing the agency. The Convener of the Forum, Dele Ologbese, who stated this in a press statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Akure, explained that the Ministry of Youths and Sports would serve as a supervisory body for the constituted board. He said that teams under ODSFA, Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens football clubs, would do much better with a proper board in place.According to him, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) in ODSFA, as constituted at present, is against extant laws and should immediately give way to a legally constituted board.Ologbese said the board would be made up of relevant bodies such as the ODSFA, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and the Commissioner for Sports who will act as supervisors in line with the enabling law.The convener, who is the immediate past Vice Chairman of ODSFA, blamed the IMC for sidelining the association in most of its activities.“This has consequently affected the fortunes of Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens gravely,” he said.Ologbese, also a former member, Nigeria Football Federation Committee on Protocols and Ceremonials, however, said he was very happy that Sunshine Stars escaped relegation by three points. He said it was bad that the female side, Sunshine Queens, were relegated to the lower league for the first time in their history.Ologbese also noted that the team needed to prepare well ahead of the incoming season by tidying up loose ends such as players’ contracts and signing of new players, among others issues.“It is highly regrettable that ODSFA Management failed to forge a good working relationships with Ondo Football Association (FA) which could have brought synergy of cooperation, understanding and immeasurable harmony between both parties.“This move could have improved the fortunes of the two state’s teams.I have no doubt that FA plays pivotal roles in the club’s administrations, being an official intermediary between it and clubs on the one hand and between it, ODSFA and NFF on the other hand.“In order to achieve a well co-ordinated football administration in the state, concerted efforts should be intensified towards improving cordial working relations between the management of the state-owned clubs and the FA,” the convener said.Ologbese, who was the President of Ologbese Football Academy, sought the putting in place of a code of conduct or ethics for players and their technical crews in order to bring sanity into the administration of the two clubs and also boosting their performances.“I have no doubt that this bold effort will make players and their officials to be exceedingly alive to their responsibilities and also instill discipline in the teams with a view to enhancing their productivity,” he said.NewsSourceCredit: NAN
