Aregbesola inspects work on 3,000 capacity correctional centre

The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola on Monday, inspected ongoing construction work of the 3,000 capacity ultra modern custodial facility in Karshi, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking during the inspection, the minister said that similar projects were being executed in the six geo-political zones of the country.

He said that the projects were initiated by President Muhammadu Buhari as part of the reform of the Nigeria Correctional Service.

Aregbesola said that three of the projects have reached advanced stage, while the one in Janguza, Kano state, is almost completed.

When completed, the minister said the facilities would decongest crowded custodial centres and ensure good living condition for inmates.

He identified funding as one of the reasons for the delay in completion of the projects, adding that if there was no release of funds, contractors would not work.

“This one you are seeing here is about 55% completed when you add all the services to it.

“This is more advanced in terms of space and other facilities.

It is designed for inmates awaiting trial, convicts, among others.

“I am highly impressed by the pace and quality of work,” he said.

Aregbesola lauded Buhari for his support to the ongoing reform of the Correctional service aimed at enhancing its operations.

He said that the president provided an intervention fund for the continuation of the project.

“My desire is to have the first three of the six completed before this administration ends next year and I am working on it.

“I am going to approach the President for support so as to get the ones in Kano, FCT and Bori in Rivers completed.

” The minister said when completed, the three new custodial centres will accommodate 9000 inmates.

“If we can have this, most of the people we are holding in some of the present facilities and are not suitable to be held there, will be relocated,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the minister was accompanied on the visit by heads of the Correctional Service, Immigration and Civil Defence Corps, among others.

Magashi lauds military’s gallantry as 3,407 terrorists lay down arms

The Minister of Defence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, has lauded the gallant performance of the military in the onslaught against criminal elements in the six geo-political zones of the country.

This is contained in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by Mr Mohammad Abdulkadri, Special Assistant to the Minister of Defence on Media and Publicity.

Abdulkadir said that Magashi spoke at the Joint World Press Conference held at the Radio House Abuja on Monday.

He also said that the press conference was done together with the minister’s counterparts in the Ministries of Police Affairs, Interior and Information and Culture.

Magashi said that the troops of Operation Hardin Kai in the North East had gallantly denied ISWAP and the Boko Haram Terrorists freedom of co-ordinated attacks as they continued to suffer huge casualties, depletion and depression.

The minister, whose briefing covered Military Operations across the six geo-political zones, said that the criminal elements had been substantially degraded and defeated in the last four weeks.

He said this was in compliance with the directive of the Commander-in- Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abdulkadir said that within the period under review, 66 suspected terrorists were neutralised, alongside the ISWAP commander, Madu Chaka and 20 others.

He added that 55 others were arrested, while 52 civilians regained their freedom from captivity.

Magashi further said that the troops of Operation Hadarin Daji in Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina and Zamfara in the North West zone had also given a good account of themselves by clearing the doubts of the bandits and kidnappers.

He assured Buhari and Nigerians of the total commitment of the military to the defence of the nation’s territorial integrity alongside other security forces.

The minister was quoted as outlining similar operational successes recorded in the North Central, South East, South South and South West. He thanked the C-in-C for the strong backings that the Armed Forces of Nigeria continued to enjoy even in the current participation in the Peace Support Operation in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

On his part, the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi said the Police Force had been repositioned and re-equipped.

Dingyadi added that the force was resolute to effectively change the narratives in all the states of the federation towards keeping the country safe and secured.

Dingiyadi buttressed the successes recorded in various parts of the country including Borno state with 248 weapons recovered.

Also, 181 suspects were arrested in Delta, and 40 suspects arrested in Niger, among several others in the last four weeks.

Similarly, the Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola warned criminal elements to keep off the Correctional Centers across the country or they would not live to tell the story of any dastard acts.

He advised Nigerians not to obstruct the operations of the Federal Fire Service in responding to the outbreak of fire emergencies.

While acknowledging the support by the military and sister agencies in a joint operational environment the interior minister assured, ”never again would jail break be repeated.

” He added that arsonists, vandals and other criminals would pay with their lives.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said that while the country may not be there yet, the military had succeeded and still succeeded in crushing the criminal elements.

This, he said, was in accordance with the directive of Buhari to the Security Forces.

The minister said what could have overwhelmed and consumed other nations of the world was what Nigeria was going through in terms of huge security challenges.

Mohammed said, ”yet, the country remains standing and resolute to end terrorism, banditry and other forms of crimes.

” He appealed to Nigerians to see security as the business of everyone and thanked the media for carrying out their watchdog roles in nation building and national defence.

According to Abdulkadri, the conference was attended by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Defence, Dr Abubakar Kana, and that of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore.

Others, he said, were the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, the Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service, Isah Jere, his Federal Fire Service counterpart, Mr Abdulganiyu Jaji, as well as top Chief Executives of Agencies, Parastatals and Media.

APC heads to tribunal over Osun governorship poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC), says it plans to challenge the results of the July 16 Osun governorship election at the election petition tribunal.

Mr Gboyega Famodun, the state APC Chairman said this at a news conference on Thursday at the party secretariat, in Osogbo.

Famodun said that the decision followed assurances by the party lawyers who said that there were good grounds to challenge the results after they had studied them.

“We are going to the tribunal.

Our lawyers had informed us that we have good reasons to challenge the results of the election at the tribunal,” he said.

He decried the suspected anti-party activities of an APC faction in the state”The Osun Progressive (TOP)”.

The Chairman said that the faction, which was under the control of the Minister of Interior and former Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, worked for the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP), to deny the APC victory at the election.

“The recent  protest by the group, calling for his removal as the party’s chairman  and the restructuring of the party, after they openly supported  the PDP candidate, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, during the governorship election was shameful and wicked.

“Our position is that the protest was shameful, callous, primitive, selfish, wicked, misplaced and inconsiderate for the Aregbesola supporters, who glaringly worked against the success of Gov. Oyetola at the polls, to now be canvassing restructuring of the party through a sponsored protest.

“Assuming without conceding that there are challenges within the party, the protesters and their patron should know that they lack moral right to either suggest or effect any likely solution for the restructuring of our party, as it is on record that they massively and collectively worked against Oyetola.

“Since  members of the factional group  (TOP) people, had done their worst by working assiduously and conscientiously by teaming up with the PDP for the success of Adeleke, which is the highest level of an anti-party activity that can be committed by any politician, it will be a needless venture to enter into any pact with the  group that is bereft of honour,” he said.

Highlights of the briefing included the passing of a Voters of Confidence on Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and Famodun by the state executive of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on July 17, declared Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the PDP as the winner of the Osun governorship election with 403,371 votes.

While Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of APC placed second with 375,027 votes.

“I am using this medium to instruct all Nigeria Immigration Officers World-Wide to accord Nigerian travellers with expired Passport use such passports to return safely back home henceforth,” he said.

The Minister also advised Nigerians in diaspora to update their travel document ahead of time to avoid rush during emergency.

Earlier, a Nigerian-American citizen, Mr Jamui Kasumu complained to the Minister that the Nigeria Immigration in America and Delta airline prevented him from coming to Nigeria because of expired Nigerian passport.

Kasumu said he was able to return to Nigeria after he got travel certificate he obtained through a relation in Nigeria.

“I am appealing to you sir that the Immigration should allow Nigerians with expired Passport to come back to their country,” he said.

Fire service rescues 260, saves 587 persons, N18.9 trn properties in 2021- Aregbesola

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) responded to 2,845 SOS distress-calls in which it saved 587 lives, rescued 260 persons and saved property worth N18.9 trillion in 2021, Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has said.

Aregbesola stated this at the decoration of the new Controller General (CG) of FFS, Mr Abdulganiyu Jaji, on Thursday in Abuja.

The minister therefore, charged Jaji to surpass this feat that was achieved by his predecessor.

He tasked the new CG to justify the investment made by President Muhammadu Buhari, to ensure that the service was revamped to meet up with current realities and globally accepted standards.

According to Aregbesola, Jaji is coming to preside over a service that has been revamped from a moribund institution to a first class disaster and emergency management machine.

The minister recalled that when the current administration came on board, the service was only fitfully represented in Abuja and Lagos, with two functioning fire engines.

He said that the FFS was now represented in all the states of the federation, with state of the art firefighting and disaster management equipment.

Aregbesola said that Buhari had taken special interest in the Ministry of Interior, and had supported its agencies, including FFS to retool and re-kit.

“As a result of this, the Federal Government provided 106 modern firefighting trucks to the FFS.

“Last year, the Federal Government also provided N10.4 billion infrastructure upgrade comprising of 44 firefighting engines, 15 water tankers, 15 rapid intervention fire engines and 20 basic life support ambulances.

“In 2021, 17 firefighting officers were sent to Belarus for advanced trainer-training course; these officers are the master trainers that are now training other officers on modern firefighting, disaster and emergency management,’’ he said.

He said that an aerial firefighting equipment designed for skyscrapers in Lagos State, was commissioned by the President, saying that Buhari had devoted resources to the FFS more than the service ever had since inception.

“This is the legacy the new CG will be inheriting, and you are required to take it a notch higher,’’ he said.

Aregnesola, however, urged building approving agencies never to approve any plan without the input of the FFS.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Shuaibu Belgore, charged the new CG to address cases of indiscipline in the service.

He noted that the challenges ahead of the CG were enormous, adding that Jaji required doggedness to move the service forward.

Belgore urged the CG to take training and other welfare package of members of staff seriously, and to form a team that would help him achieve his objectives.

Responding, Jaji said he was grateful to God and to the President for finding him worthy to stir the affairs of the FFS at this time.

“I will not let you down,’’ Jaji said.

He sought the support of all stakeholders to enable him make the dreams of the service a reality, stressing that the success of the service was in the unity of personnel and support of all Nigerians.

According to him, he will stand on the legacies of his predecessors and prioritise Public Private Partnership (PPP) to inclusiveness.

He promised to enhance the capacity of staff, actualise the FFS partnership with the Nigerian Airforce, aimed at area fire combat using aircraft.

Jaji said that under his watch, focus would be more on fire prevention than control.

He said that he would roll out massive campaign to enlighten the general public on how to prevent fire.

1.5m Nigerians in Italy need passport – NIDOE

Mr. George Omo-Iduhon, President of the Organization of Nigerians in the Diaspora in Europe (NIDOE), Italy Chapter, said that more than 1.5 million registered Nigerians urgently needed a Nigerian passport.

Omo-Iduhon stated this in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency in Lagos on Saturday while reflecting on NIDOE's activities in Europe.

reports that NIDOE is the European arm of a global Nigerian diaspora network, established in 2000 by Olusegun Obasanjo.

NIDOE is based in London, where it serves 21 regional chapters.

Omo-Iduhon said that out of roughly 3 million Nigerians registered in Italy, 1.5 million of them needed passports, which had prevented them from returning home or getting work.

“One of the problems we face as Nigerians living in Italy is the acute shortage of Nigerian passports. Most of the time, we go to the embassy to address the issue.

“What we usually get in response is a shortage of brochures and backlogs. The government should help address this problem because Italy serves as a gateway to other countries in Europe, especially for Nigerians.

“Most Nigerians prefer to have their political asylum in Italy. In Italy, we have more Nigerians than in other European countries; Nigerians registered according to the database are three million apart from the undocumented.

"Approximately 1.5 million Nigerians in Italy do not have passports, even some of those who have been accepted have not received a passport, which makes it difficult for them to work," he said.

The president said that the supply of 500 passport brochures to the Nigerian embassy in Italy was extremely inadequate to cater for the number of citizens in need.

“The number of brochures assigned to the embassy in Italy, which is 500, is insignificant for the number of applicants; even giving Italy 20,000 brochures in a month may not be distributed.

“Using the same exchange formula for all European countries cannot work in Italy, where we have more Nigerian residents. We cannot compare ourselves to Sweden with fewer Nigerian residents.

“We appeal to the relevant government agencies and our kind Minister of the Interior, Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola, to help us address this problem.

"The president of NIDCOM, Mrs. Abike Dabiri, has also tried for us," he said.

Omo-Iduhon said the body had a leadership change in July 2021, after an election, adding that the new administration was poised to improve the welfare of Nigerians.

“We have just held our elections in July this year, the first thing we have proposed as a team is to improve the well-being of Nigerians in Italy. This is of the utmost importance to us.

“We are also in contact with the Nigerian embassy in Italy to do the right thing at the right time and, more importantly, our mandate to bring investors from Italy to Nigeria.

"We need to grow the Nigerian economy, a mission that Obasanjo is set on to help drive development," he added.

NIDOE is recognized as an official platform through which Nigerians in the diaspora, their community, organization and corporate entities can channel their development efforts towards Nigeria.

The organization partners with the Nigerian community, professional organizations, and public and private companies in specific areas such as Foreign Direct Investment, professional networks, stakeholder advocacy, medical missions, educational support, and skills transfer to Nigeria.

1.5 million Nigerians in Italy need passport – Diaspora organisation

George Omo-Iduhon, President of the Organization of Nigerians in the Diaspora of Europe, NIDOE, Italy Chapter, said that more than 1.5 million registered Nigerians urgently needed Nigerian passports.

Mr. Omo-Iduhon stated this in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency in Lagos on Saturday while reflecting on NIDOE's activities in Europe.

NAN reports that NIDOE is the European arm of a global Nigerian diaspora network, established in 2000 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

NIDOE is based in London, where it serves 21 regional chapters.

Omo-Iduhon said that of roughly 3 million Nigerians registered in Italy, 1.5 million of them needed passports, which had prevented them from returning home or getting work.

"About 1.5 million Nigerians in Italy do not have passports, even some of those who have been accepted by the Italian government have not received passports, which makes it difficult for them to work," he said.

"We need to grow Nigeria's economy, a mission that former President Obasanjo set us up to help in the development drive," he added.
