USMNT target Folarin Balogun scores dramatic late goal, denies PSG win as Reims earn deserved draw

Folarin Balogun's late equalizer denied Paris Saint-Germain the win and kept Stade de Reims' impressive 14-game unbeaten run going on Sunday in a 1-1 draw. Neymar had looked set to reopen a five-point gap on RC Lens at the Ligue 1 summit for the 10-man hosts but U.S. men's national team-eligible Balogun had other ideas and snatched the draw at the death.

It was no less than deserved for Reims, who played some superb stuff at Parc des Princes and out-shot PSG in the first half but were unable to get the goal their enterprise merited at 11 vs. 11. In fact, it looked like they would leave empty-handed when Neymar opened the scoring from a Juan Bernat assist against the run of play early in the second half, and Balogun then had a Reims penalty overturned via VAR due to his being offside.

Marco Verratti's foul on Junya Ito was also spotted through the VAR check which earned the Italy international a red card just 15 minutes into his return from injury after coming on as a substitute. Achraf Hakimi also had a goal disallowed as Verratti's ejection actually sparked a bit of life into the hosts, who had been sluggish in attack as Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe failed to fire after Monday's Coupe de France blowout win over Pays de Cassel.

Just as it looked as if PSG would seal three flattering points, though, Balogun salvaged a draw for Reims from a Kamory Doumbia assist to keep them unbeaten and add another feather to Will Still's cap. The hotshot showed great composure to round Gianluigi Donnarumma before finishing clinically to spark wild celebrations on the away bench.

"It is hard against 10 men as the scenario changes. You lose your bearings and we had 10,15, or 20 minutes of just floating as we knew that PSG's greatest danger came in transition. We wanted to lure them into a trap as we knew how fast Mbappe can be. After the red, we had to adapt and start to push. After the game, I told the players that it was good to take a point, but that it will be useless if we do not beat Lorient."

Balogun is on loan from Arsenal and has been the subject of much speculation regarding his international future, which could lie with the USMNT given that he was born in New York City back in 2001. This was the 21-year-old's 11th goal of the Ligue 1 season and the Gunners could look to bring him back to Emirates Stadium for next season if he keeps up his prolific form in France for the remainder of this campaign.

"This is a special night for me," he said after the game. "I paid attention to all of the details, I saw Donnarumma coming off of his line, and I saw it was easier to take the ball around him. My celebration was in tribute to Thierry Henry. We stayed solid against a better team. Although we do not have any game-changing substitutes, the coach told us that we could get the result by keeping the same mentality. It is easier with him as coach as he speaks English."

For PSG, it was another worrying display from a team that has not looked or seemed right since the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar which disrupted an unbeaten start to the season. The UEFA Champions League is set to return this coming month and Mbappe, Messi and Neymar are still below-par despite a four-point lead in Ligue 1 which was of no consolation to Galtier.

"Our first half was insufficient and we were fortunate to score so quickly in the second half. There was also being down to 10 men, but overall we cannot be satisfied. We must get back to winning ways and show more togetherness. We had the ball at our feet with 30 seconds left. We must keep working, but many players are also not at their level. I am also responsible."

Reims' late equalizer came after nearly six minutes of time added on which is latest goal PSG have conceded in Ligue 1 since at least 2006-07. Les Parisiens have now conceded in six of their last seven Championnat outings which is arguably the most troubling statistic of the lot and explains why the club are so keen to get Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar in now with games against Montpellier HSC and Toulouse FC coming up this next week.

  • Carlo Ancelotti won t be disappointed with his team s performance but the result leaves them in a perilous position There are still plenty of games left and another Cl sico to be played but Barcelona haven t dropped many points this season A chance for Los Blancos to make up some points A trip to the Benito Villamar n is never easy A good point I m happy with the point and my own performance Playing against these teams they usually make you pay and we normally do too even if we had less chances But we weren t clinical in front of goal Happy with the draw Nacho s possible red card I was too far away If those who were closer think it s worth making a complaint then we ll see Imanol Alguacil Imanol knows how to get the best out of us It s no coincidence He knows what makes us tick Elustondo s injury There are too many players out I ve seen the incident with Elustondo and it was a bad collision let s hope it s nothing I ll see him now Pride We ve had a really hard week A lot of players were only just fit enough to play I can only congratulate the players and thank them I hope the fans are proud We couldn t win but it s a point that is just reward for what we have done Reinforcing the midfield I had it in mind before the game and the players knew that We had to bring on Navarro and play a 4 4 2 in defence and 4 3 3 in attack We executed it well We had our chances I m happy it s not an easy stadium to play in It s even more impressive because of the way we came into the game Zubeldia at full back It s one more injury to Elustondo that s a lot of injuries Situations that have to be managed and changed It went well Sometimes we ve put him there and although he s not that comfortable someone had to do it Academy products You can imagine how I feel about that I m a product of the academy That s what we always say We are proud of what we do with our youth system To do what we ve done today is a real pleasure and a source of pride Elustondo s injury It s a sprain Let s hope it s less serious this time We ll wait for them to assess it and see how bad it is A bad taste in the mouth It s a bit bad you want to win your game We had a lot of chances Today we deserved to win I m disappointed they re a great team and they can put you in trouble A draw obviously makes you feel bad A great game from Remiro It often happens that a goalkeeper has a great game here Remiro is a great goalkeeper he stops the first two down low and then the one that Vinicius tries to dink over him He had a great game Possible penalty for holding Some people say it could have been a penalty but holding is a bit of a lottery sometimes it s given and sometimes it isn t A dubious penalty is not going to be a penalty A dubious penalty is not going to change the fact that we had many chances to score How to deal with dropped points Win on Thursday Lately Barcelona have been playing before us and that puts us under more pressure It is important to get back into the habit of winning Today we played well sometimes you play well and don t win Let s keep going General assessment It was a very good game to watch very intense it was a great game from both teams We had the clearest chances but we didn t put them away It s a pity about the draw we wanted to win Chances to score Remiro and La Real are having a great season I think we did a great job but we leave with a bad taste in our mouths But it s a very long season we re not just going to dwell on this one His possible sending off I don t know it was strange It s true that I stopped them from playing but I thought it was a throw in for us but it s true that I shouldn t have stopped them Fortunately it wasn t a card These things happen in soccer Frustration Yes when you create clear chances and miss them it s demoralising The team gave their all throughout the match We were also affected by the extra time the other day in the cup But this is very long season We have to fight for everything The performance It s a shame We played very well we deserved to win It was a complete performance we only needed to score we came close It s a draw and I m satisfied because the team played very well Possible fatigue We pushed hard for 90 minutes with lots of intensity Real Sociedad didn t play the way they like to play we pressed high up You couldn t tell that we played extra time on Thursday the team played with a lot of intensity until the end Camavinga at full back Camavinga did well He s not used to it but we created a lot of chances from that flank with Vinicius Substitutions In the end Asensio took Valverde s place in the midfield three with Rodrygo more on the wing or coming inside It was difficult to make the changes because nobody deserved to come off I saw the team doing well on the field and I didn t want to change things It was a good game I m satisfied The league table We re five points behind we have to catch them up Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad reaction on its way They did put it in the box and out the other side What a waste Please put this one in the box Another corner for Real Sociedad This ll surely be the last kick of the game Oooooh a chance for Illarramendi to win the game from the edge of the box Deflected out for a corner Real Sociedad trying to play their game and play out from the back which is admirable You just get the feeling that it could catch them out Less than five minutes to go As things stand Real Madrid are going to fall five points behind Barcelona That pass from Zubimendi is exactly the kind of pass Imanol Alguacil will want his team to avoid La Real looking to play out from the back but the midfielder gives it straight to Kroos inside the visitors half They got away with it that time Ceballos and Valverde are off Modric and Asensio on for Real Madrid Nacho a little bit lucky to avoid a second yellow card as he stops Illarramendi from taking a quick through Superb save from Remiro to deny Vin cius Superb play from Vin cius to jink beyond the Real Sociedad defence and he s one on one with Remiro The Brazilian tries to dink it over the goalkeeper but Remiro guesses right and beats it away Courtois saves from Kubo A matter of seconds later Kubo is again involved The Japanese has come over to the right and makes space for a shot which almost sneaks under Courtois Risky RISKY defending from Milit o Kubo tries to feed one into the box and the Brazilian leans into it with his shoulder and only just avoids making contact with his arm Massive block from Zubeldia What a huge tackle from Zubeldia A free flowing move from Real Madrid looks certain to end with Rodrygo bursting the net but Zubeldia appears out of nowhere to block the Brazilian s shot Changes for Real Sociedad This is an all out assault on the Real Sociedad goal at the start of the second half Rodrygo and Valverde with a characteristic blockbuster come inches away from bursting the Real Sociedad net from outside the box Within 10 seconds of the restart Ceballos fires one goalwards and Remiro has to get down to make a smart stop Back underway at the Santiago Bernab u A breathless first half Hugely entertaining despite there being no goals Hopefully that s come across and if you re watching you agree More of the same after half time please Crucial save from Remiro from Vin cius One minute of added time As that corner came in Le Normand and R diger were again involved a wrestling match in the box nothing given Things are moving fast out there Clever from Le Normand to win a free kick inside his own box under serious pressure from countryman Benzema The battle of the Frenchman and the defender came out on top there What a start to the game this has been Absolutely majestic from Vin cius A textbook nutmeg on Zubeldia in the box and he s in the perfect position to curl it into the corner just wide What a goal that would ve been Both teams look keen to push their defences high up the pitch when possible which means most of the play has been pretty condensed so far Who will be able to break in behind Vini and Rodrygo like space to run into La Real should be ahead What a huge chance for La Real Oyarzabal gets in a nice pocket of space and feeds it wide to Mu oz whose cross looks set to be prodded home by Sorloth but he completed misses the ball He should ve got something on that A bit of grappling in the box between Le Normand and R diger the kind that never gets given as a penalty unless the ball s in play Corner cleared A decent delivery from the German and the ball is cleared out for a corner which he ll also take A first chance for Kroos to get the ball into the box from a set play Real Sociedad will get us underway Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad countdown to kick off Will these two be looking at each other like this in a couple of hours time Almost time to go this should be a cracker famous last words And here is the Real Sociedad side that will go in search of a sixth league win in a row It ll be a tough ask especially with so many absentees Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil We have to play our own game When asked about how his team could win away to Real Madrid Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil had a simple answer We need to be ourselves and play our own game We have to be aggressive be brave It s really difficult to defend for 96 minutes I really love Real Madrid s competitive spirit which is what almost always makes them win That makes them different from everyone else The post below highlights the best bits from Ancelotti s press conference on Saturday If you want to see what else he said here s Joe with all the details Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti We have to be better in the first half of games In his pre match press conference Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti was asked about how he saw his opponents Real Sociedad saying they are playing very well and are on a great run We have to be better in the first halves of games After what happened against Atl tico it is important to play a complete game in both attack and defence When asked about whether Madrid s mentality overpowers their tactics Ancelotti was straight talking They also said that last year We have tactics Sometimes we do well and sometimes not Madrid doesn t have a clear identity for the simple reason that I want it that way A good team knows how to do a lot of things What did soccer players do while walking from the bus into the stadium before earphones I dread to think Real Sociedad are the in form team in LaLiga Santander Until their narrow Copa del Rey defeat to Barcelona in midweek they were on a run of nine victories in a row in all competitions which was a club record As things stand they have won their last five league fixtures a sequence that has propelled them into third place in the league where they currently sit four points ahead of Atl tico Madrid with a game in hand and seven above Villarreal Imanol Alguacil s men topped their Europa League group ahead of Manchester United helped by a superb 1 0 victory at Old Trafford on the opening matchday They are in the hat for the last 16 draw but their league form means they ll have their hearts set on qualifying for the Champions League in 2023 24 Given the lead they hold over the sides below them it s well in their hands although Alguacil will be keen for key players such as David Silva and Mikel Merino to get back to full fitness as soon as possible In the first couple of months of the campaign Real Madrid looked as if they were going to cruise to the league title Barcelona were never far behind but were beset by off field issues and Los Blancos comfortably won the first Cl sico of the campaign to move to the top of LaLiga They easily qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and all seemed rosy despite Karim Benzema s ongoing injury issues A couple of weeks before the World Cup break however the wheels came off somewhat with a home draw against Girona and a defeat to Rayo Vallecano The malaise continued after Qatar as they were beaten in Villarreal and convincingly lost in the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona Ceballos currently has his confidence levels through the roof and in terms of football he is excelling The lacklustre performances of Kroos and the fatigue of Modric opened up a spot in midfield He had a great game in Villarreal including the winning goal a strong performance in San Mam s and a sensational derby It s been some transformation in the last few weeks for a player who has suffered some bad injuries was sent out on loan to Arsenal and spent long periods watching on from the bench On top of that last weekend s goal away to Athletic Club drew him level with Ra l on 228 league goals for Real Madrid one tonight will move him into second spot on his own I m sure you can have a guess at who s first Real Sociedad team to play Real Madrid What I can tell you is that they ve got an injury list as long as my arm David Silva Merino Sola Sadiq Guevara Gorosabel and Cho are all absent That s a bit of a spanner in the works for them as they look for a sixth straight league win Courtois Nacho Milit o R diger Camavinga Valverde Kroos Ceballos Rodrygo Benzema Vin cius An interesting looking back four with Nacho as he often does and Camavinga who may start doing it more filling in in the full back positions Of course you may be looking for a way to watch Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad in which case you are bang in luck If you re in the United States there is a way and this is it What time does Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad kick off Real Are you ready Let s do this Hello and welcome to Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad And just like that the pressure is on for Real Madrid Barcelona s win against Girona on Saturday means Carlo Ancelotti s it is important to play a complete game in both attack and defence When asked about whether Madrid s mentality overpowers their tactics Ancelotti was straight talking They also said that last year We have tactics Sometimes we do well and sometimes not Madrid doesn t have a clear identity for the simple reason that I want it that way A good team knows how to do a lot of things What did soccer players do while walking from the bus into the stadium before earphones I dread to think Real Sociedad are the in form team in LaLiga Santander Until their narrow Copa del Rey defeat to Barcelona in midweek they were on a run of nine victories in a row in all competitions which was a club record As things stand they have won their last five league fixtures a sequence that has propelled them into third place in the league where they currently sit four points ahead of Atl tico Madrid with a game in hand and seven above Villarreal Imanol Alguacil s men topped their Europa League group ahead of Manchester United helped by a superb 1 0 victory at Old Trafford on the opening matchday They are in the hat for the last 16 draw but their league form means they ll have their hearts set on qualifying for the Champions League in 2023 24 Given the lead they hold over the sides below them it s well in their hands although Alguacil will be keen for key players such as David Silva and Mikel Merino to get back to full fitness as soon as possible In the first couple of months of the campaign Real Madrid looked as if they were going to cruise to the league title Barcelona were never far behind but were beset by off field issues and Los Blancos comfortably won the first Cl sico of the campaign to move to the top of LaLiga They easily qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and all seemed rosy despite Karim Benzema s ongoing injury issues A couple of weeks before the World Cup break however the wheels came off somewhat with a home draw against Girona and a defeat to Rayo Vallecano The malaise continued after Qatar as they were beaten in Villarreal and convincingly lost in the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona Ceballos currently has his confidence levels through the roof and in terms of football he is excelling The lacklustre performances of Kroos and the fatigue of Modric opened up a spot in midfield He had a great game in Villarreal including the winning goal a strong performance in San Mam s and a sensational derby It s been some transformation in the last few weeks for a player who has suffered some bad injuries was sent out on loan to Arsenal and spent long periods watching on from the bench On top of that last weekend s goal away to Athletic Club drew him level with Ra l on 228 league goals for Real Madrid one tonight will move him into second spot on his own I m sure you can have a guess at who s first Real Sociedad team to play Real Madrid What I can tell you is that they ve got an injury list as long as my arm David Silva Merino Sola Sadiq score, goals, highlights

Carlo Ancelotti won't be disappointed with his team's performance but the result leaves them in a perilous position. There are still plenty of games left and another Clásico to be played but Barcelona haven't dropped many points this season...

A chance for Los Blancos to make up some points? A trip to the Benito Villamarín is never easy...

A good point: "I'm happy with the point and my own performance. Playing against these teams, they usually make you pay and we normally do too, even if we had less chances. But we weren't clinical in front of goal. Happy with the draw".Nacho's possible red card: "I was too far away. If those who were closer think it's worth making a complaint, then we'll see".Imanol Alguacil: "Imanol knows how to get the best out of us. It's no coincidence. He knows what makes us tick".Elustondo's injury: "There are too many players out. I've seen the incident with Elustondo and it was a bad collision, let's hope it's nothing. I'll see him now".

Pride: "We've had a really hard week. A lot of players were only just fit enough to play. I can only congratulate the players and thank them. I hope the fans are proud. We couldn't win, but it's a point that is just reward for what we have done".Reinforcing the midfield: "I had it in mind before the game and the players knew that. We had to bring on Navarro and play a 4-4-2 in defence and 4-3-3 in attack. We executed it well. We had our chances. I'm happy, it's not an easy stadium to play in. It's even more impressive because of the way we came into the game."Zubeldia at full-back: "It's one more injury (to Elustondo), that's a lot of injuries. Situations that have to be managed and changed. It went well. Sometimes we've put him there and although he's not that comfortable, someone had to do it".Academy products: "You can imagine how I feel about that, I'm a product of the academy. That's what we always say. We are proud of what we do with our youth system. To do what we've done today is a real pleasure and a source of pride".Elustondo's injury: "It's a sprain. Let's hope it's less serious this time. We'll wait for them to assess it and see how bad it is".

A bad taste in the mouth: "It's a bit bad, you want to win your game. We had a lot of chances. Today we deserved to win. I'm disappointed, they're a great team and they can put you in trouble. A draw obviously makes you feel bad".A great game from Remiro: "It often happens that a goalkeeper has a great game here. Remiro is a great goalkeeper, he stops the first two down low and then the one that Vinicius tries to dink over him. He had a great game".Possible penalty for holding: "Some people say it could have been a penalty, but holding is a bit of a lottery, sometimes it's given and sometimes it isn't. A dubious penalty is not going to be a penalty. A dubious penalty is not going to change the fact that we had many chances to score".How to deal with dropped points: "Win on Thursday. Lately, Barcelona have been playing before us and that puts us under more pressure. It is  important to get back into the habit of winning. Today we played well, sometimes you play well and don't win. Let's keep going".

General assessment: "It was a very good game to watch, very intense, it was a great game from both teams. We had the clearest chances, but we didn't put them away. It's a pity about the draw, we wanted to win. "Chances to score: "Remiro and La Real are having a great season. I think we did a great job, but we leave with a bad taste in our mouths. But it's a very long season, we're not just going to dwell on this one."His possible sending-off: "I don't know, it was strange. It's true that I stopped them from playing, but I thought it was a throw-in for us, but it's true that I shouldn't have stopped them. Fortunately, it wasn't a card. These things happen in soccer".Frustration: "Yes, when you create clear chances and miss them, it's demoralising. The team gave their all throughout the match. We were also affected by the extra time the other day in the cup. But this is very long season. We have to fight for everything".

The performance: "It's a shame. We played very well, we deserved to win. It was a complete performance, we only needed to score, we came close. It's a draw and I'm satisfied because the team played very well".

Possible fatigue: "We pushed hard for 90 minutes, with lots of intensity. Real Sociedad didn't play the way they like to play, we pressed high up. You couldn't tell that we played extra time on Thursday, the team played with a lot of intensity until the end".Camavinga at full-back: "Camavinga did well. He's not used to it but we created a lot of chances from that flank with Vinicius".Substitutions: "In the end, Asensio took Valverde's place in the midfield three with Rodrygo more on the wing or coming inside. It was difficult to make the changes because nobody deserved to come off. I saw the team doing well on the field and I didn't want to change things. It was a good game. I'm satisfied".The league table: "We're five points behind, we have to catch them up".

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad reaction on its way!

They did put it in the box...and out the other side. What a waste.

Please put this one in the box...

Another corner for Real Sociedad! This'll surely be the last kick of the game...

Oooooh, a chance for Illarramendi to win the game from the edge of the box! Deflected out for a corner...

Real Sociedad trying to play their game and play out from the back, which is admirable. You just get the feeling that it could catch them out...

Less than five minutes to go. As things stand, Real Madrid are going to fall five points behind Barcelona...

That pass from Zubimendi is exactly the kind of pass Imanol Alguacil will want his team to avoid. La Real looking to play out from the back but the midfielder gives it straight to Kroos inside the visitors' half. They got away with it that time...

Ceballos and Valverde are off. Modric and Asensio on for Real Madrid.

Nacho a little bit lucky to avoid a second yellow card as he stops Illarramendi from taking a quick through...

Superb save from Remiro to deny Vinícius!

Superb play from Vinícius to jink beyond the Real Sociedad defence and he's one-on-one with Remiro. The Brazilian tries to dink it over the goalkeeper but Remiro guesses right and beats it away!

    Courtois saves from Kubo!

A matter of seconds later, Kubo is again involved. The Japanese has come over to the right and makes space for a shot, which almost sneaks under Courtois!

Risky, RISKY defending from Militão. Kubo tries to feed one into the box and the Brazilian leans into it with his shoulder and only just avoids making contact with his arm.

    Massive block from Zubeldia!

What a huge tackle from Zubeldia! A free-flowing move from Real Madrid looks certain to end with Rodrygo bursting the net but Zubeldia appears out of nowhere to block the Brazilian's shot!

    Changes for Real Sociedad.

This is an all-out assault on the Real Sociedad goal at the start of the second half...

Rodrygo and Valverde - with a characteristic blockbuster - come inches away from bursting the Real Sociedad net from outside the box!

Within 10 seconds of the restart, Ceballos fires one goalwards and Remiro has to get down to make a smart stop!

Back underway at the Santiago Bernabéu!

A breathless first half! Hugely entertaining, despite there being no goals. Hopefully that's come across and, if you're watching, you agree!

More of the same after half-time, please!

Crucial save from Remiro from Vinícius!

    One minute of added time.

As that corner came in, Le Normand and Rüdiger were again involved a wrestling match in the box...nothing given.

Things are moving fast out there!

Clever from Le Normand to win a free-kick inside his own box under serious pressure from countryman Benzema. The battle of the Frenchman and the defender came out on top there.

What a start to the game this has been...

Absolutely majestic from Vinícius! A textbook nutmeg on Zubeldia in the box and he's in the perfect position to curl it into the corner...just wide!

What a goal that would've been!

Both teams look keen to push their defences high up the pitch when possible, which means most of the play has been pretty condensed so far. Who will be able to break in behind? Vini and Rodrygo like space to run into...

    La Real should be ahead!

What a huge chance for La Real! Oyarzabal gets in a nice pocket of space and feeds it wide to Muñoz, whose cross looks set to be prodded home by Sorloth but he completed misses the ball. He should've got something on that.

A bit of grappling in the box between Le Normand and Rüdiger, the kind that never gets given as a penalty unless the ball's in play. Corner cleared.

A decent delivery from the German and the ball is cleared out for a corner which he'll also take...

A first chance for Kroos to get the ball into the box from a set play...

Real Sociedad will get us underway.

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad: countdown to kick-off!

Will these two be looking at each other like this in a couple of hours' time?

Almost time to go, this should be a cracker (famous last words)!

And here is the Real Sociedad side that will go in search of a sixth league win in a row. It'll be a tough ask, especially with so many absentees...

Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil: "We have to play our own game"

When asked about how his team could win away to Real Madrid, Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil had a simple answer: "We need to be ourselves and play our own game. We have to be aggressive, be brave. It's really difficult to defend for 96 minutes."

"I really love Real Madrid's competitive spirit, which is what almost always makes them win. That makes them different from everyone else."

The post below highlights the 'best bits' from Ancelotti's press conference on Saturday. If you want to see what else he said, here's Joe with all the details!

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti: "We have to be better in the first half of games"

In his pre-match press conference, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti was asked about how he saw his opponents, Real Sociedad, saying “they are playing very well and are on a great run. We have to be better in the first halves of games. After what happened against Atlético, it is important to play a complete game in both attack and defence.”

When asked about whether Madrid's mentality overpowers their tactics, Ancelotti was straight-talking. “They also said that last year. We have tactics. Sometimes we do well and sometimes not. Madrid doesn't have a clear identity, for the simple reason that I want it that way. A good team knows how to do a lot of things.”

What did soccer players do while walking from the bus into the stadium before earphones? I dread to think.

Real Sociedad are the in-form team in LaLiga Santander Until their narrow Copa del Rey defeat to Barcelona in midweek, they were on a run of nine victories in a row in all competitions, which was a club record. As things stand, they have won their last five league fixtures, a sequence that has propelled them into third place in the league, where they currently sit four points ahead of Atlético Madrid (with a game in hand) and seven above Villarreal.

Imanol Alguacil’s men topped their Europa League group ahead of Manchester United, helped by a superb 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on the opening matchday. They are in the hat for the last 16 draw but their league form means they’ll have their hearts set on qualifying for the Champions League in 2023-24. Given the lead they hold over the sides below them, it’s well in their hands, although Alguacil will be keen for key players such as David Silva and Mikel Merino to get back to full fitness as soon as possible.

In the first couple of months of the campaign, Real Madrid looked as if they were going to cruise to the league title. Barcelona were never far behind but were beset by off-field issues and Los Blancos comfortably won the first Clásico of the campaign to move to the top of LaLiga. They easily qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and all seemed rosy, despite Karim Benzema’s ongoing injury issues.

A couple of weeks before the World Cup break, however, the wheels came off somewhat, with a home draw against Girona and a defeat to Rayo Vallecano. The malaise continued after Qatar as they were beaten in Villarreal and convincingly lost in the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona.

"Ceballos currently has his confidence levels through the roof and in terms of football, he is excelling. The lacklustre performances of Kroos and the fatigue of Modric opened up a spot in midfield. He had a great game in Villarreal (including the winning goal), a strong performance in San Mamés and a sensational derby..."

It's been some transformation in the last few weeks for a player who has suffered some bad injuries, was sent out on loan to Arsenal and spent long periods watching on from the bench.

On top of that, last weekend's goal away to Athletic Club drew him level with Raúl on 228 league goals for Real Madrid, one tonight will move him into second spot on his own. I'm sure you can have a guess at who's first...

Real Sociedad team to play Real Madrid...

What I can tell you is that they’ve got an injury list as long as my arm. David Silva, Merino, Sola, Sadiq, Guevara, Gorosabel and Cho are all absent. That’s a bit of a spanner in the works for them as they look for a sixth straight league win.

Courtois; Nacho, Militão, Rüdiger, Camavinga; Valverde, Kroos, Ceballos; Rodrygo, Benzema, Vinícius.

An interesting looking back four, with Nacho, as he often does, and Camavinga, who may start doing it more, filling in in the full-back positions.

Of course, you may be looking for a way to watch Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad, in which case, you are bang in luck.

If you’re in the United States, there is a way and this is it!

What time does Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad kick off?

Real Madrid against Real Sociedad gets underway at 9pm local time in Spain, that’s 3pm ET and 12pm PT. Over the course of the next 90 minutes, I’ll be bringing you build-up, team news and plenty, plenty more.

Are you ready? Let’s do this!

Hello and welcome to Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad!

And just like that, the pressure is on for Real Madrid. Barcelona’s win against Girona on Saturday means Carlo Ancelotti’s men now find themselves six points adrift of their arch-rivals at the top of LaLiga Santander. How did that happen?!

A must-win game for them on Sunday, then, against one of the most in-form teams in Spain, Real Sociedad.

Thanks for joining me (Roddy) for this one, it’s beautifully set up!

Neymar scores, but Folarin Balogun equalizes on final kick

PSG dropped more points in Ligue 1 after conceding a stoppage-time goal to settle for a 1-1 home draw against mid-table Stade de Reims. The defending Ligue 1 champions now have two losses and a draw in their last four league matches.

Despite playing the final 30 minutes with 10 men, PSG were seconds away from sealing a big victory. But a poor PSG giveaway in midfield led to a through-ball for Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun, who rounded the goalkeeper and scored a late 1-1 equalizer.

But thing got problematic for PSG when second-half sub Marco Verratti, who was making his comeback from injury after missing four straight matches, was sent off for a studs-up tackle into the ankle of a Reims player. The challenge initially earned him a yellow card until the referee saw the replay and changed it to a red card.

However, Reims could not take advantage of the numerical advantage, and PSG looked like they would come away with the victory until the giveaway that ultimately sprung the 21-year-old Balogun, who had the expert finish around the goalkeeper for his 11th goal of the Ligue 1 season.

PSG now have a mere three-point lead over second-place Lens with 20 matches played thus far, and another round of midweek matches coming. The Parisians travel to face Montpellier on Wednesday, February 1, while Lens are at home against OGC Nice.

Reims remain undefeated under manager Will Still, stretching their unbeaten run to 12 league matches and 14 overall in all competitions. The draw lifted them to 11th place, 11 points away from the relegation zone.

Goals: PSG — Neymar — 51st min. REI — Folarin Balogun (Kamory Doumbia)— 95th+ min.

It's a scenario we'd grown accustomed to seeing in recent seasons under manager Mauricio Pochettino: PSG inexplicably coming out flat or failing to stand up to opponents who were up for the fight. And new boss Christophe Galtier seemed to have eradicated that bad habit until the start of 2023 which has seen PSG pick up two losses and a draw in their last four matches.

"In this moment too many players are not playing at their level after returning from the World Cup," Galtier told the media postgame. "One cannot be satisfied with our play and our results. There will be decisions to take to find a team that's a lot more solid, and resembles a high-level team."

The draw against Reims was the first time since returning from Qatar that all three started together, but it didn't help give PSG the upperhand at least in the first half, during which all three were invisible. They were more active in the second 45 minutes and Neymar took advantage of a lucky deflection for the goal. But outside of a half chance for Mbappe and Messi, there wasn't much else to highlight.

Born in Belgium to English parents, Stade de Reims manager Will Still is only 30 years old, but he has his club on a 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions. His story is catching the attention of many across Europe due to his age, his language skills, and his revelation that he was inspired to enter coaching from the popular Football Manager video game.

After starting out as a video analyst, an assistant coach, and a couple of caretaker spells with Belgian clubs, Still joined Stade de Reims as an assistant to start the 2021/22 season. After manager Oscar Garcia was fired in October, Still was given the interim tag which was ultimately removed after the start of his current undefeated run. That streak now includes two draws against PSG and leaves Stade de Reims in good position to remain in Ligue 1 and avoid relegation.

Final: Reims goal scoring hero Folarin Balogun and star midfielder Marshall Munetsi take advantage and snap a photo with Prime Video analyst and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

95th min.: Goal Reims! On the last kick of the game, Reims intercept a misplaced PSG pass, and Folarin Balogun was put through on goal. He had the legs to get around the goalkeeper and score. What a ball into Balgun by Kamory Doumbia.

90th min.: Five minutes of stoppage time.

90th min.: Chance Reims! It's Mitchell Van Bergen with a shot that nearly hit the target. Van Bergen has his head in his hands. He knew he was close on a potential equalizer.

84th min.: SUB PSG. Warren Zaire-Emery replaces Neymar, who put in a nice shift in this second half.

83rd min.: SUBS Reims. The visitors bring on Dion Lopy and Mitchell Van Bergen for Junya Ito and Jens Cajuste in midfield.

83rd min.: PSG chance! What a play by the Big Three. First there was an Mbappe shot that was saved. Then Messi kept the play alive. Neymar fought for the ball and crossed it. Messi got an other shot off just wide left. Good job by Christophe Galtier for not taking any of them off after the red card.

75th min.: SUBS Reims. After an off-target shot by Folarin Balogun, two fresh players come on for the visitors. Arber Zeneli and Kamory Doumbia are in for Marshall Munetsi and Alexis Flips and they're expected to give some new ideas to the Reims attack.

73rd min.: Neymar with the header clearance in his own box! Notable because it shows you the length the champions will go to preserve this win.

68th min.: SUB PSG. Renato Sanches is on for Fabian Ruiz. Between Sanches and Danilo now on the field, PSG have introduced some real steel and range to help defend this lead with 20 minutes left.

65th min.: Goal disallowed for PSG. Messi passes to an overlapping Hakimi who scores. But Hakimi was offside on the play despite a great effort to finish. You wouldn't know that PSG is down a man at this point.

63rd min.: SUB PSG. Instead of taking off a forward, as most coaches would do, PSG manager Christophe Galtier puts Danilo in for Carlos Soler in midfield.

59th min.: Red card to PSG's Verratti! After checking the video, the referee takes the yellow away and gives Verratti the red card. It's the right call.

57th min.: Yellow card to PSG's Marco Verratti. It's a late, studs-up tackle on Junya Ito's ankle on the play that led to the scratched penalty. That could be a red card, and Verratti knows it.

55th min.: Penalty for Reims! But the replays show that there was an offside on the play. Marquinhos brought down Folarin Balogun in the box, but Balogun's offside position kills the play.

51st min.: Goal PSG! This is a different PSG team to start the second half. A shot by Messi was deflected right to Neymar, who was patient before lofting it into the goal. Cool finish by the Brazilian.

46th min.: We're back underway. Marco Verratti is in fact in the game in place of Vitinha.

Halftime: Impressive performance from the visitors who are not intimidated in the least. All 11 Reims players are alert, connected, and unfazed by the moment. You can tell why they've gone undefeated in 11 straight matches under manager Will Still.

What are Reims doing well? The midfield trio of Matusiwa-Cajuste-Munetsi have taken PSG's midfield out of the game. PSG might be forced to get Marco Verratti and perhaps Danilo into the midfield at halftime.

35th min.: Yellow card to Reims winger Junya Ito for a hard foul on Neymar along the sidelines.

30th min.: Chance Reims! Marshall Munetsi is the Man of the Match so far and he tries an overhead kick in the box! He's been making several runs into the box. Reims are feeling it at the Parc des Princes.

Very little intensity, aggression, or reaction from PSG. Feels like an off-night for PSG. Messi is invisible. If it weren't for this photo you wouldn't know he's on the field.

28th min.: Yellow card to PSG's Marquinhos. He pulls down Junya Ito to stop a counterattack. It's the right call from the referee.

24th min.: Chance Reims! Jens Cajuste puts a beautiful through ball into Junya Ito and his attempted cross is blocked by Gigi Donnarumma for a corner kick. Moments later it's Marshall Munetsi with a shot that's off the mark. Reims manager Will Still will be very pleased.

17th min.: Chance Reims! Gigi Donnarumma comes up with the big save on a run into the box from holding mid Marshall Munetsi. He poked the ball on goal from close range but the PSG 'keeper was up to the challenge.

15th min.: Chance Reims! Right-back Thomas Foket curls a ball from the right into the box and Junya Ito fires the volley which hits the side netting. The visitors are for real.

11th min.: Chance Reims again! Ball from the left into Folarin Balogun in the box, and the Arsenal loanee fires a shot on goal which PSG's Gigi Donnarumma has to stop.

10th min.: Chance Reims! Alexis Flips dishes it to Folarin Balogun on the run and his volley is tipped by Gigi Donnarumma over the bar. But Flips was judged to be offside. Nonetheless, Reims have sent a message early on here.

5th min.: PSG recover from the early scare and they're keeping possession, but Stade de Reims are comfortable so far, and they're pressing high when PSG try to play out of the back.

1st min.: Chance Reims! The visitors were pressing PSG 'keeper Donnarumma from the start and Marshall Munetsi intercepts a pass, but Donnarumma recovers to snag the ball after a heavy touch.

Leeds United on the verge of signing Weston McKennie from Juventus

The American dream continues. Premier League club Leeds United are on the verge of signing Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie. The American player is reported to be joining The Whites on loan until the end of the season, with a purchase option for the following year.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted earlier that Leeds will pay €1.2m loan fee and that the deal will also include an option to buy the player for €33 million plus add ons.

The deal has rumbled on with rumours having circled of a potential move for Moroccan midfielder, Azzedine Ounahi. However, it feels as though that transfer has now died down given the supposed progression of the agreement between Leeds and Juventus for McKennie. The manager of the Italian club, Massimiliano Allegri, said that “McKennie will not be available tomorrow because he is at the centre of a negotiation. I think the club has already found an agreement with his new team and therefore he won’t be there tomorrow.”

So far, Leeds have already spent big in the window. They have signed Maximilian Wöber from RB Salzburg as well as Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim for a combined total of around £45-50 million; adding McKennie would significantly increase that number.

McKennie, born in Washington, moved to Juventus permanently in 2021 after a year on loan in Italy from parent club Schalke, becoming the first ever US player to play for The Old Lady. His singing for Leeds would make him the third USMNT player to currently play for the English club, after Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson. Adams captained the US at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and formed a strong partnership with McKennie, which is something they could potentially continue in Yorkshire.

Led by American coach Jesse Marsch, the side have struggled so far this season, winning just four games in the first half of the season. The club is currently in a state of purgatory, with current owner Andrea Radrizzani waiting for the stars to align regarding a potential takeover from 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of NFL side, San Francisco 49ers. The deal is expected to go through any time soon.

Brighton’s £100m man wanted by Chelsea and Arsenal

The Ecuador international has emerged as one of the hottest properties in Europe, and the 21-year-old is gunning for Liverpool this weekend.

As a team with serious midfield worries, Liverpool could well do without another trip to Brighton right now.

The Reds’ problems in the centre of the park this season have been well-documented, and they will certainly be tested this weekend when they return to the Amex Stadium, the scene of what Jurgen Klopp described only a fortnight ago as the worst game of his 22-year managerial career.

“A proper horror show,” was how Klopp referred to that 3-0 Premier League defeat at his pre-match press conference on Friday. His team may have responded to that drubbing with a pair of stubborn defensive performances, and a couple of hard-earned clean sheets, but they know that a serious improvement is needed if they are to keep alive their hopes of retaining the FA Cup they won in such dramatic fashion at Wembley last May.

For a side low on confidence, and struggling for cohesion, structure and balance, Brighton might represent the worst kind of opponent for Liverpool. Roberto De Zerbi’s side sit above them in the table, are scoring freely (19 goals in their last six matches) and consistently play with the kind of organisation, poise and energy that was for so long the Reds’ calling card.

It was their widemen, the underrated Solly March and the electric Kaoru Mitoma, who did the damage when the sides met earlier this month, but much of Brighton’s success this season can be traced back to the performances of their central midfield duo, with Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo emerging as one of the most formidable pairings in the country.

Mac Allister, of course, played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup success, but it is the emergence of Caicedo which has caught the eye most this season, and which has made the Ecuador international one of the hottest properties in European football.

Chelsea have already had a £55 million ($68m) bid for the 21-year-old rejected this month, while reports on Friday suggested that Arsenal, too, had seen a £60m ($74m) offer rebuffed, with Brighton insistent that the player will not be sold in this window. Their valuation is said to be closer to £100m ($124m).

Quite remarkable, really, when you consider that this is a player who cost less than £5m when arriving from Independiente del Valle in January 2021, and who has made only 31 appearances for Brighton since. Twelve months ago, he was on loan with the Belgian side Beerschot, and by all accounts he wasn’t pulling up too many trees there, either.

He’s been brilliant since returning, though, his performances in the second half of last season ensuring that Brighton were able to sell Yves Bissouma to Tottenham, safe in the knowledge they already had the perfect replacement on board, ready to step up and fill the void.

Caicedo has certainly done that. He was the star of the show on the opening weekend of the Premier League season as the Seagulls recorded a first ever win at Old Trafford, and he has gone from strength to strength since, shining under Graham Potter and getting even better under De Zerbi, as well as performing admirably for Ecuador at the World Cup in Qatar.

“With Caicedo, I don't see anything not at the top level. And he is very young so he can learn and improve more. He has no limit.”

Gustavo Alfaro, his former coach with Ecuador, agrees. “He is a world-class player,” he has said. In 2020 Alfaro trusted the 18-year-old Caicedo, on his senior international debut, to man-mark Lionel Messi in a World Cup qualifier against Argentina, and he has gone on to become a mainstay for his country since, earning 28 caps and scoring three goals.

Clearly, he is a player destined to play at the top level. Liverpool are admirers, and there have been discussions internally at Anfield as to why the club were not all over him when he left Ecuador two years ago. Indeed, Caicedo looks as if he will have his pick of clubs in the summer, when he will have two years left on his contract and when Brighton will look to cash in as they have done successfully in the past with the likes of Bissouma, Ben White, Leandro Trossard and Marc Cucurella.

Trossard’s recent departure to Arsenal, as well as the tantalising prospect of European qualification, means they are loath to sell in January, although that could change if the player made clear his desire to leave, as Trossard did. Caicedo has expressed, in the past, his “dream” of playing for Manchester United, and the lure of Champions League football at Chelsea (and a reunion with Potter), or the potential of a Premier League winners’ medal at Arsenal, should not be underestimated.

For the time being, though, he remains at the Amex, alongside Mac Allister and ready to continue his inexorable rise to stardom.

And for Liverpool, that means Sunday could be another long day on the South Coast.

Benfica to demand £106m release clause fee for Enzo Fernandez, THREE clubs involved in ‘open race’ to sign him

Benfica have THREE European clubs reportedly eyeing up rising prospect Enzo Fernandez and have remained firm on their asking price for the Argentina star.

Fernandez signed for Benfica last summer in an initial £8.8m deal from River Plate, but the Argentine midfielder’s transfer value has skyrocketed since the World Cup.

The 22-year-old Benfica star played a starring role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, with Fernandez scoring once and registering one assist.

Fernandez, who took home the Best Young Player award at the World Cup, is under contract with Primeira Liga side Benfica until 2027.

Chelsea were heavily linked with the World Cup-winning Argentine in the January window but the Premier League club failed to reach an agreement.

Benfica face a real test in keeping hold of Fernandez in the summer window, with the Portuguese side demanding a club must activate his £106m release clause.

According to CBS Sports Golazo’s Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are among the clubs still interested in signing the Argentina international.

However, it is believed that the race to sign him will intensify in the summer, with both Real Madrid and Liverpool potential suitors for Fernandez.

“If nothing dramatic happens in January, there will definitely be an open race for him come summer,” Jacobs tweeted.

If nothing dramatic happens in January, there will definitely be an open race for him come summer. Chelsea, Liverpool and even Real potentially. Completely different negotiation in four months.

“Chelsea, Liverpool and even Real potentially. Completely different negotiation in four months.”

Benfica boss Roger Schmidt was not happy with Chelsea’s pursuit of Fernandez and insisted the only way the player could leave would be through his release clause fee.

“There’s a club who want our player. They know we don’t want to sell the player,” he said.

“They tried to get the player on their side and they know they only can get this player when they pay the clause. So, it’s a very clear situation...

“What the club is doing who wants to buy Enzo is disrespectful against all of us, against Benfica and I cannot accept what they are doing.

“So, to make the player crazy and then to pretend they can pay the clause and later they want to negotiate...

“I think it is not what I understand about a good relationship between clubs who maybe want to discuss about the player.”

Arsenal make £60m bid for Brighton midfielder but offer is rejected

Arsenal have had a £60m bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo rejected.

The south-coast club insist Caicedo is not for sale in this January transfer window, but Arsenal remain interested and are deciding whether to go back in with an improved offer.

Sky Sports News has also been told Arsenal are still interested in signing Declan Rice in the summer - whether or not they sign Caicedo.

The Gunners' bid for Caicedo was a guaranteed £60m fee. The biggest transfer fee Brighton have received in their history is the initial £57m plus add-ons from Chelsea for Marc Cucurella last summer.

Chelsea are also interested in the midfielder - who Brighton bought for £4.5m from Independiente del Valle in Ecuador two years ago - but one source has told Sky Sports News a transfer to the Blues in January seems very unlikely as the clubs are "not in the same ball park" regarding valuations.

Speaking on Friday, Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton's head coach, insisted Caicedo was focused on Brighton and urged the 21-year-old to remain at the Amex Stadium until the summer.

"I think he's a good guy," said De Zerbi. "He's focused only on Brighton. I hope he can stay with us until the end of the season because, in my opinion, it's the best solution for him and us."

De Zerbi added: "I can understand the other big teams want our young players - [Alexis] Mac Allister, Caicedo, [Kaoru] Mitoma, [Solly] March - but the decision is for the players and the club.

"I spoke with him [Caicedo] Wednesday and I told him my opinion. I think it's always difficult to change inside the season because you can find more problems. It is important to stay another four months."

Pressed on his conversation with Caicedo, De Zerbi revealed: "I spoke with him like a father, not like a coach.

"I understand when one player has the possibility to change teams and go to a very big team, but my work is to give the style of play and also advice for his career and his life."

Caicedo has two-and-a-half years left on his contract and is unlikely to sign a new one. As a result, Brighton will be doing due diligence on a potential succession plan.

Earlier this week, Caicedo addressed questions about his future by saying he's "focused only" on the south-coast club.

Speaking after Brighton's 2-2 draw at Leicester on Saturday, Caicedo told The Argus: "I am focused now on Brighton. I am here, I'm playing every day.

"What happens outside doesn't trouble me, nor does it take the focus away because I'm focused only on here."

The radar graphic below compares Caicedo with all central midfielders in Europe's top leagues this season and reveals his primary strengths include general distribution, creating chances and winning duels.

Caicedo also provides box-to-box qualities from a typical No 6 role, patrolling the left-of-centre in defensive and opposition halves in almost equal measure.

He has attempted only two shots from inside the box in the Premier League this term and is far more inclined to strike from outside the area - hitting the target three times from 10 long-range attempts.

In terms of creating chances, Caicedo frequently penetrates opposition lines with threaded passes in central areas but has also found team-mates from wide areas.

The graphic below highlights how Caicedo's passes are primarily made down the central and left-hand thirds and underlines his box-to-box influence, while the passing direction radar reveals an impressive accuracy and progressive vision - with barely any passes angled back towards his own goal.

He is also cool under pressure, with only two team-mates recording a better ball-retention rate when being hunted down by opposition players, and is also the key component in Brighton's transition phases, according to Second Spectrum data.

At just 21, Caicedo also offers a long-term solution and investment and would drop the Gunners' league-low average age even lower. But he has experience, too - collecting 28 senior caps for his nation and impressing at the World Cup in Qatar.

Some may baulk at the proposed fee, but Caicedo provides serious midfield mettle and scope for development, while his remaining deal at the Amex, a soaring transfer market and growing competition for transfer targets nudges prices ever higher.

One of the most important factors behind Arsenal's success this season is that they have been able to keep Thomas Partey fit. The Ghanaian was sorely missed during his periods on the sidelines last term and Arsenal's record with and without him proves it.

In fact, factor in the current campaign as well and Arsenal's win rate stands at 74 per cent in the Premier League games he has started compared to just 50 per cent in the ones he has missed.

The gulf in quality between him and his deputies, Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga, is simply too large and the Egyptian's injury exposes Arsenal's lack of depth even more glaringly.

Waiting until the summer, when the club hope to recruit Declan Rice from West Ham, is now even riskier than it was and that means action is required before the end of the January window.

Arsenal's schedule has been relatively kind since Christmas, but it ramps up with a run of four Premier League games in 14 days at the start of February, and that's followed by the resumption of their Europa League campaign in March.

Partey's load will need to be managed in order to minimise the risk of injury and that will only be possible if Mikel Arteta is granted his wish for a viable alternative in the 29-year-old's position.

Arsenal's recruitment in recent years has centred on the long-term but right now, top of the Premier League and with the added burden of European commitments to come, a short-term solution is needed.

CCook: "Caicedo would round off a very good January window for AFC. With all basis covered, this will give AFC every chance of winning the PL this season."

Emmett Josiah Mulbah: "Arsenal should send Albert Sambi Lokonga on loan with the option to buy +60m for Moises Caicedo. I think Arsenal need him to challenge for the title."

Bilbo: "Let's up the offer and test Brighton's resolve. Go all out to get him and don't stop until we do. He'd be a great addition to an Arsenal squad."

mikey0483: "Whilst there in no doubting Caicedo's ability, I feel Arsenal should look for a short term loan deal deal as cover in central midfield and go all out for Declan Rice in a summer move."

Dan: "Don't see why the signing of Caicedo would affect the signing of Rice. should we pursue him in the summer. Both players are fantastic and can play in a variety of positions. I think both players could and should be signed."

Bren: "The big question is, will he be a starter or back up to Partey/Xhaka? As of right now, I don't see him coming in and taking their places. £60m+ is a lot for a bench player, also. I'd look at a cheaper alternative for six months then go in for Rice at the end of the season."

Joe: "As a Brighton fan, I hope we keep Caicedo until the summer at least! Would rather lose him to a team like Real Madrid rather than a team in England."

BHAFOREVER: "As a Brighton fan, I really hope we keep hold of him until the summer at the very least... The dream for all Brighton fans is to see us reach Europe for the first time ever, and we definitely need Caicedo to achieve it."

Why are Chelsea and Arsenal eager to sign Brighton midfielder?

Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly trying to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo - but why is the Ecuador international in demand?

The Blues have spent a Premier League-topping £190m in the January window to date but appear to have more funds to spend as they push to sign Caicedo for a fee in the region of £55m before the Tuesday deadline.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have submitted a £60m bid for the 21-year-old and negotiations over the player's future are under way, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Ecuador international has two-and-a-half years left on his deal at Brighton, who are thought to want £100m.

So, what does he offer the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal?

At just 21, Caceido also offers a long-term solution and investment and would drop the Gunners' league-low average age even lower.

"Caicedo is a player Arsenal like, the same as Chelsea.

"We've seen that Chelsea had a £55m bid rejected last week. There has been reported interest from Liverpool and others, but Brighton have been steadfast in their view that the player is not going anywhere in this transfer window, and it would take a hell of a lot more than Chelsea's £55m bid to even tempt them to consider selling him.

"So, if £75m is the area Arsenal are looking to go to that is higher than their rivals. They have money, clearly, given that they went in even higher for Mykhailo Mudryk, who ended up moving from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea.

"However, I would hazard a guess that Caicedo will stay at Brighton in this particular window. I just don't see clubs going to the level of expenditure it will take for Brighton to part with him. He's also under a long-term contract.

"Caicedo has changed agents and that representation will most likely see him edge to a possible move away from the Amex Stadium at some point, whether in January or in the summer. But I think it would be unlikely at this stage that Arsenal would manage to pull it off.

"Although, the Gunners do want to invest or recruit in their midfield, whether it be a permanent or a loan deal given it seems Mohamed Elneny has suffered an injury setback in training. Certainly, in the last days of this window, the midfield area is one to watch.

"There were reports that Brighton want £100m to part with Caicedo, so that's the steepness of the task at hand for Arsenal."

Who will be on the move this winter? The January transfer window opened on Sunday January 1, 2023 and closes at 11pm in England and midnight in Scotland on Tuesday January 31, 2023.

Enzo Fernandez will reportedly receive €2 million from Benfica as apology for Chelsea transfer breaking down

Enzo Fernandez will reportedly receive a huge cash sum from Benfica as an apology for his January transfer to Chelsea breaking down.

The midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Estadio da Luz after winning the World Cup with Argentina.

In what'll come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the news this month, Chelsea showed serious interest in snapping Fernandez up.

His release clause is £106 million and keen to make a splash in the market, Blues owner Todd Boehly explored the opportunity knowing his team needed reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Chelsea have been without N'Golo Kante since August, while Denis Zakaria is out until next month with a knee issue.

Benfica refused to negotiate a lower price, given Fernandez's performances in Qatar. It saw Chelsea turn their attention to other targets.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Benfica will give Fernandez €2 million as 'compensation' for a move not coming to fruition. Not a bad apology gift to receive.

Fernandez was named Best Young Player at the World Cup after starting five games and scoring one goal. Alongside Alexis Mac Allister, he helped La Albiceleste to their third World Cup win and first since 1986.

Chelsea have signed six players in the January transfer window so far. David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke have arrived at Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis while Joao Felix is on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.

They're not done yet either. Lyon right-back Malo Gusto is a target, although they'd like to keep the teenager until the summer at least.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter admitted following Saturday's 0-0 draw with Liverpool that he hasn't had much input in the signings made this month.

He told BT Sport: "I don’t think it’s as simple as saying they’re mine. For the head coach, it’s very difficult to also have command over these targets and have a list of players that are 'yours'.

"I think my job is to support the club, which is a recruitment team, ownership group, whether it’s transfers, daily environment, or winning matches.

"It’s a club, we’re trying to win together as a club. Whilst I have an input on everything, I’m not the guy that sits in a room and decides everything."
