UK’s Johnson under fire over ‘Trumpian’ attack on rival

Embattled British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced fresh pressure on Tuesday to apologize to opposition leader Keir Starmer for what critics called a misleading "Trumpian" attack on him last week.

Johnson, facing calls to resign after months of scandals, accused Starmer of failing to take action in 2013 against notorious pedophile Jimmy Savile as the nation's chief prosecutor.

Labor leader Starmer, who led the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) from 2008 to 2013, was not personally involved in the case but has previously apologized on behalf of the CPS for his failings.

Critics, including numerous Conservative MPs, have criticized Johnson's claim, made during a contentious parliamentary session, saying it had been propagated by far-right conspiracy theorists.

Johnson later clarified the comment, noting Starmer's apology and apparent acceptance of responsibility, but refused to apologize or retract his original statement.

He has come under renewed scrutiny after several dozen anti-lockdown protesters assaulted Starmer on Monday as he was leaving parliament, with one protester overheard claiming he was "protecting pedophiles".

A video posted online showed the Labor leader being pushed before police, who arrested two people, intervened and escorted him to a car.

Within hours, several Conservative lawmakers were renewing calls for Johnson to apologize.

“PM excuse me please,” Tobias Ellwood wrote on Twitter.

“We claim to be the Mother of all Parliaments. Let us prevent this drift towards a Trumpian political style from becoming the norm. We are better than this."

Johnson himself took to Twitter to criticize Starmer's treatment on Monday as "absolutely disgraceful."

"All forms of harassment of our elected representatives are completely unacceptable," he said, adding, "I thank the police for responding quickly."

    Haunted by 'Partygate'
Meanwhile, his ministers tried to distance the British leader's earlier attack on the Labor leader from the facts.

"I don't think you can say that's why it happened," Technology Minister Chris Philp told Sky News.

He noted that other politicians and public figures had previously faced similar treatment from rowdy protesters.

But the incidents appear to have heightened concern within the restive Conservative Party about Johnson's conduct.

Ellwood is one of 13 Conservative MPs who have publicly submitted a letter of no confidence in Johnson to a committee of secondary lawmakers with the power to call a leadership contest.

It is believed that more sent letters without declaring them.

It follows weeks of damaging claims of parties in Downing Street during the pandemic, in a scandal dubbed "partygate".

The committee requires at least 15 per cent, or 54, of the 360 Conservative MPs to write such letters to trigger a party leadership challenge.

Johnson has tried to move beyond the scandal by changing his core team, leaving several senior advisers and hiring a new chief of staff and director of communications.

However, his longtime senior policy adviser, Munira Mirza, unexpectedly resigned last Thursday, specifically citing Jimmy Saville's claim in her resignation letter that was made public.

Meanwhile, Johnson is awaiting the outcome of a Metropolitan Police Service investigation into the numerous Downing Street gatherings and whether lockdown rules were breached.

The British leader under fire could face the humiliation of being fined by police, an outcome that is likely to prompt a series of new letters of censure.

It also heads into UK local elections in May with Labor enjoying a double-digit lead over the ruling Conservatives, due to the party's gate scandal and falling living standards caused by rising inflation. .

UK government orders probe into Muslim ex-minister’s claims

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ordered an investigation into claims by a former Muslim minister that she was fired from her government because of her faith, a spokesman said on Monday.

The claims of Nusrat Ghani, a former junior transport minister, have stoked a new controversy in Downing Street as Johnson awaits the results of a separate investigation into the "partygate" revelations.

"The Prime Minister has asked the Cabinet Office to conduct an investigation into the allegations made by MP Nusrat Ghani," the spokesman said.

Johnson had initially urged Ghani to lodge a formal complaint through the Conservative Party. But she refused, arguing that the accusation focused on government and not party work.

"The prime minister has now asked officials to establish the facts about what happened," the spokesman said, adding that Johnson "takes these claims very seriously."

Ghani welcomed the new investigation, which was announced after he had talks with Johnson on Sunday night.

"As I said to the PM last night, all I want is for this to be taken seriously and for him to investigate," he tweeted.

The inquiry must look into what he was told by both Downing Street aides and a Conservative whip in Parliament, the Tory MP added.

Ghani, 49, was sacked as transport minister in 2020 and told the Sunday Times that a whip said her "Muslimity was raised as an issue" at a meeting in Downing Street.

She was also told that her "status as a Muslim minister was making her colleagues uncomfortable," she said.

Chief Whip Mark Spencer, whose role is to keep MPs on board with the government's agenda, took the unusual step of identifying himself as the person at the center of the claims and strongly denied the allegations.

Government whips were already in the spotlight after another Tory MP accused them of "blackmailing" Johnson's critics over the partygate affair.

Several Conservatives have called for the prime minister to resign after revelations that his staff had held frequent parties in Downing Street during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Johnson attended at least one of the meetings but denies breaking the law and has tasked official Sue Gray to investigate.

Gray's report could come out this week, according to reports.

In a newspaper column in 2018, Johnson sparked widespread criticism by writing that Muslim women wearing burqas looked like "letterboxes" and "bank robbers."

Science and Innovation on launch of South African nanosatellite constellation

This will further consolidate South Africa's position as an African leader in small satellite development and help the country capture a valuable part of a niche market.

    PRETORIA, South Africa, January 13, 2022 / APO Group / -

For the first time in South Africa's space industry, three locally produced nanosatellites will launch into space today. The first constellation of Maritime Domain Awareness Satellites (MDASat-1) will be launched as part of the Transporter-3 mission of the US aerospace company SpaceX.

The launch is scheduled for January 13, 2022 at 5:25 PM South Africa time from Cape Canaveral in the United States. This is the latest estimated time and is subject to change depending on weather conditions.

South Africa's satellites will be launched aboard US aerospace company SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket as a "shared-ride payload" of the company's Transporter-3 (or ISI Launch 36P) mission, and will be deployed in low-Earth orbit. at an altitude of 525 kilometers. Transporter-3, SpaceX's third dedicated carpool mission, will carry a total of 105 spacecraft, including CubeSats, microsats, PocketQubes, and orbital transfer vehicles.

The launch of MDASat-1 is an important milestone for South Africa, as it marks the first launch of a fully developed constellation of satellites on the African continent.

Welcoming the event, Minister for Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande, said that funding and support from the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) to South Africa's satellite construction industry were giving its fruits. "This will further cement South Africa's position as an African leader in small satellite development and help the country capture a valuable part of a niche market in the rapidly growing global satellite value chain," said Dr. Nzimande.

The launch of the first three satellites in the MDASat constellation comes three years after the launch of the most advanced South African nanosatellite to date, ZACube 2, as a technology demonstrator for the MDASat constellation.

"Since its launch in 2018, ZACube-2 has provided state-of-the-art very high frequency (VHF) data exchange communication systems to the country's maritime industry, as a contribution to Operation Phakisa," said Dr. Nzimande, and added that DSI had invested R27 million over three years in the development of the MDASat constellation. DSI is implementing this work through the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Although South Africa has been involved, on a relatively small scale, in space activities since the dawn of the space age in 1957, the national space industry requires specialized skills.

The Minister noted that the lack of space professionals and engineers had led DSI and its entity, the National Research Foundation (NRF), to initiate a human capital development program at the CPUT under the umbrella of the French Institute of Technology in South Africa. (F'SATI). satellite program (CubeSat), with the introduction of a Master of Electrical Engineering focused on satellite systems.

"As part of this program, students are taught engineering principles using CubeSats as training tools," said Dr. Nzimande. "CubeSats are built using the same engineering principles as any other satellite, therefore highly specialized and advanced skills are acquired through this program."

The complete constellation of MDASat will be an operational constellation of nine cubic satellites that will detect, identify and monitor vessels in near real time in support of awareness of South Africa's maritime domain.

SpaceX will host a live webcast of the launch at spacex.com/launches(link is external). The webcast will start 10-15 minutes before takeoff.

Coronavirus- South Africa: City increases its vaccination capacity

This is a good time to make sure your child's overall immunizations are up to date as well.

    CAPE TOWN, South Africa, January 7, 2022 / APO Group / -

With the holiday season in the rearview mirror, the City is calling on residents to kick off the new year with a vaccine, if they haven't already, or a booster shot, if eligible.

The city of Cape Town is introducing vaccination services at four additional sites this week.

The non-profit organization, Khethimpilo, will host pop-up vaccination sites on a rotating basis at the following community day centers between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM:

Luvuyo CDC in Khayelitsha on Mondays and Tuesdays Gordon's Bay CDC on Wednesdays Dr. Ivan Tomms CDC on Thursdays Town Two CDC in Khayelitsha on Fridays

The city already has 12 fixed vaccination sites that are supplemented by area-based mobile vaccination vans, introduced in August last year.

“We are making more resources available to reach both the unvaccinated population and to facilitate access to people who are now eligible to receive their booster doses. A lot of information is spreading about vaccines and booster shots, and it is important that our residents take a moment to familiarize themselves with all the new developments over the past month and line up to receive their vaccines or booster shots. as the case may be, ”said Councilor Patricia Van der Ross, a member of the Mayor's Committee for Community Services and Health.

Just before Christmas, the National Department of Health announced that booster shots had been approved for both Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.

Anyone who has received their two doses of the Pfizer vaccine should receive a booster dose six months after their second dose is given.

Anyone who has received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is a single dose, is eligible for a booster dose two months later.

The public is reminded that children between the ages of 12 and 17 are also eligible for a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

“With the new school year just a few weeks away, now is a great time to vaccinate your child. Vaccines are safe, but they are also easy to administer. In fact, it's a good time to make sure your child's overall immunizations are up to date as well.

'No need to register beforehand; just visit any of the vaccination sites and take your identity card, passport, refugee permit or asylum seeker permit with you. If you don't have these documents, the staff at the vaccination sites will register you and vaccinate you, 'added Councilor Van der Ross.

    Limpopo boasts tourism experience #UnlikeAnyOther

Approximately 17% of international tourist arrivals to South Africa go to Limpopo

    JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, December 21, 2021 / APO Group / -

In an attempt to attract a good mix of business and leisure travelers, Limpopo Tourism positioned itself as a mecca for sports, wildlife and industry at Expo 2020 in Dubai last night.

It was the fourth installment of the Provincial Exhibition organized by the South African Pavilion. The series promotes tourism in the nine provinces. The pavilion theme "Think South Africa, Think Opportunity" invites investors from around the world to consider South Africa a business destination.

In recent years, Limpopo has expanded its tourism marketing campaign, first with a new brand logo, an improved website, and a catchy hash tag on #UnlikeAnyOther. As a result, tourism represents five percent of the province's economy.

It has lived up to its hash tag, according to Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) Acting Executive Director Moses Ngobeni. “We have many hidden treasures based on our six tourism groups: culture and heritage, business and events, special interests, family and recreation, safari and hunting, and sports and wildlife. You can choose from one of the many great boutique products. We can host half[1]large gatherings in the bush with game drives, and we have wedding venues like no other. "

A great starting point for leisure tourists.

Being the northernmost province, Limpopo shares its borders with three countries, namely Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Its location makes it the ideal starting point for leisure travelers looking to create a regional itinerary in South Africa.

About 17% of international tourist arrivals to South Africa go to Limpopo. International tourists are drawn to the Bela-Bela nature conservation area in the Waterberg region, the remains of the 10th-century town of Mapungubwe, and the Kruger National Park that it shares with the province of Mpumalanga. Of its six groups, the province's wildlife continues to be the draw for foreign visitors.

Limpopo also attracts more domestic travelers than any other province, Ngobeni said.

Sport as a driver of tourism

Limpopo uses sport as a means to boost tourism in the province. However, unlike most other provinces in the country, it is bringing a unique twist to the sporting events it hosts.

Ngobeni said Limpopo has combined golf and wildlife in an attempt to offer an exclusive experience. “We have unique golf courses where there is wildlife. Hence, our golf courses are managed under the concept of golf and play ”.

It also hosts the annual Tour de Limpopo, a multi-day road stage race rated 2.2 Union Cycliste Internationale, making it a globally recognized cycling event. It is part of the UCI Africa Tour and takes cyclists through some of the most emblematic places in the province.

Limpopo is also creating a home for extreme sports in the former mining town of Thabazimbi in Waterberg. Ngobeni said it is scheduled to host an international event in September next year.

Foreign investors can take a bite out of agriculture and industry

The province is taking important steps to improve its agriculture and industry, both of which are worth a look for investors, according to the chairman of the board of the Limpopo Tourism Agency. “The province is the citrus capital of South Africa due to its pleasant climate throughout the year. Mining is also one of the economic activities, of which there is a large endowment of metals from the platinum group and diamonds ”.

Mining, in particular, contributes 24.5% of the province's GDP.

Limpopo's Economic Growth and Development Plan aims to build a more industrialized economy that drives job creation.

The R150 billion Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (SEZ) seeks to take advantage of the province's connection with neighboring countries. More than 20,000 jobs are expected to be created in the minerals, mineral processing, energy and logistics sectors.

Ngobeni said Limpopo presents abundant opportunities for both leisure and business tourists and is ready to welcome them with open arms. "Limpopo is ready to receive visitors from the United Arab Emirates and all visitors from various markets that South Africa has."

Today's provincial exhibition will take audiences to both Gauteng and the Eastern Cape at 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Gulf Standard Time, respectively. To view these events, please register on the pavilion's online portal.
