616 PDP members defect to APC in Gombe

No fewer than 616  members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State on Saturday defected to the  All Progressives Congress (APC).

An ex-chieftain of PDP, Alhaji Kwairanga Dukku, led the new entrants, including women and youths leaders from different wards within the local government area into the APC.

Dukku attributed their decision to good and purpose-driven leadership style of Gov. Inuwa Yahaya.

Also speaking, Alhaji Bappah Maru, a former member of the PDP Elders’ Forum said the efforts of the present administration in the state in the provision of potable water in the area convinced him to join the APC.

Umaru said their decision to join the APC was to appreciate the governor’s  people-oriented policies towards improving the well being of the people.

Welcoming the new members, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya said the APC-led state government had entrenched good governance.

Represented by the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Alhaji Muhammad Magaji, Yahaya said the large number of people joining APC showed there was no hope for the opposition parties in the state in 2023. ”With the calibre of defectors received in Dukku LGA, the APC in Gombe had been further fortified and this means that our chances in 2023 are getting brighter,” the governor added.

The Vice Chairman of APC in Dukku LGA, Alhaji Yahya Kole, lauded Yahaya for delivering on his mandate to transform the state.

He said: ”This is why APC has become a party that everyone wants to join and we will keep receiving new members.

Atiku pledges to work with stakeholders to end ASUU strike

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to work with government and lecturers to end incessant strike in Nigeria universities.

Abubakar stated this at a youths programme with the theme “Intergenerational Synergy on Government”, organised by PDP to commemorate the 2022 International Youth Day celebration in Abuja on Friday.

Abubakar, who narrated how his father was arrested for never wanting him to go to school, described education as fundamental right of any citizen, especially the children and youths.

He decried the inability of the government to resolve lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying such would not happen under a PDP or his led administration when elected as president.

“I want to pledge that I will work with university authorities and government to make sure we end this incessant strikes by ASUU.

“This is because education is fundamental to your growth.

It doesn’t matter whether you are in politics, business or any sector.

The fundamental right of every youth or every citizen is to be educated.

“Therefore it is the responsibility of any responsible government to make sure that right is given to every Nigerian, every youth in this country,” Abubakar said.

The former vice president who reiterated his pledge for youth inclusive government, promised to provide youths with the opportunities to acquire the training and experience to take over from the older generations.

Abubakar urged the youth to support the PDP to take over government in 2023 to rescue the youth and the nation.

“I believe that the PDP provides the best platform for you to actualise your individual’s collective and national aspirations,” he said.

Abubakar encouraged youths who wanted to go into politics, either as part-time or full time career, to be patient and courageous in building their ways to the top.

The PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, said that the party would take care of all when it comes back to power by 2023. He said that there would be sufficient representation for youths in the government, both in elected or appointed positions.

“PDP is the only party that has done it in the past.

    I will do it again.

“We will rebuild this country and you will have a better country.

Power belongs to you; power does not belong to we the old generation.

We are only rebuilding to hand over to you,” he said.

The Minority Leader of the House, Sen. Ndudi Elumelu, the acting Chairman of the occasion, who passed a vote of confidence on Ayu and his executive, urged members to join the party leaders to rescue it.

Elumelu said those calling for the dissolution of Ayu’s National Working Committee (NWC) did not mean well for the party and the nation.

“What they should be thinking about is how to join us together to unite this party, unite Nigerians that are looking forward to PDP to rescue them and of course, come back to power come 2023.” Elumelu urged the youth not to be deterred by what they were going through, but work with PDP to return to power.

“Let me charge youth to note that not only the future, but the present belongs to you.

It is your time and you must make good use of it,” Ayu said.

The PDP National Youth Leader, Muhammed Suleiman, advised youths not to see leadership as an entitlement, but a process that involved all stakeholders in every aspect of the society.

Suleiman said that the youth must be prepared to have the right mindset and humility to deal with the challenges that come with leadership.

He said that the PDP NWC, led by Ayu, was fully youth-oriented and ready to support the youth in any endeavour.

“Our presidential candidate Abubakar has shown over the years that he is a true believer in the capacity of the youth.

“This is definitely a reunion to rescue the country.

“I thank you, the tricycle riders for the support.

NFF seeking immediate results, not development— Ex-Sports Minister

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development Bolaji Abdullahi says the problem of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is getting immediate results and not the development of the game.

Abdullahi, who is the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kwara Central Senatorial District for the 2023 general election, made the declaration on Wednesday in Ilorin.

He spoke at the 33rd Media Parliament of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara council,  held at the NUJ Press Centre, Ilorin.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Media Parliament was themed “Retooling Nigeria for Emerging Challenges”.

According to him, the problem of the NFF is that they are too focused on getting immediate results, rather than strengthening the institutions that will ensure total development of the game from the grassroots.

Abdullahi, who was the minister of sports when the Super Eagles won the 2013 Nations Cup, 19 years after doing same, said that the fact that it took the nation that long to win it again was a reflection of total neglect of the development culture in football in Nigeria.

“We won the Nations Cup in 1994 and why didn’t we win the following edition?

Waiting for another 19 years to do so was not good enough.

And again, how we won the AFCON in 2013 is a story for another day,” he said.

The former minister, who was the brain behind the introduction of the youth development system, tagged National Youth Games in 2013, also said that the Games was a deliberate plan to build athletes for the future, a platform which is yielding positive results today.

“We critically analysed the National Sports Festival, which accommodates young and older atheletes, and discovered that there was the need to create a separate platform for the younger ones to grow, and that was how we came about the National Youth Games, which has no doubt, changed the sports development system in the country,” Abdullahi said.

He said that achieving podium success has to do with total commitment, and that it would take an athlete about 10,000 hours of training, especially doing so from at least, seven years of age.

PDP Delta more united than ever under Okowa, says Group

The Ijaw Mandate Group, a social political movement, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta is strong, cohesive and more united than ever under Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa who is PDP 2023 Vice presidential candidate.

The group made this known Tuesday during a march to the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.

The National Coordinator of the group, Mr Andaye Dagidi, said that the group was at the party secretariat to inform the party leaders not to be carried away by lies and fake news by those who wanted the PDP to lose out in Delta.

He declared the group’s total support for  Mr Sherrif Oborevwori, the party’s governorship candidate in Delta, saying he is eminently qualified.

“We are here to express our support for Sherrif, who is capable to build on the legacy of Okowa.

“Sheriff is a man of credibility.

He has all the qualifications to be a governors of Delta State.

He is the speaker of the state House for Assembly for two term.

“Anybody who does not want Sheriff in Delta does not love the state.

Sheriff is the most qualified and credible candidate to win Delta for PDP.

” Dagidi advised the party leaders to ignore calls by earlier protesters calling on the Ayu-led party to submit the name of Mr David Edevbie to INEC as PDP candidate or resign his chairmanship position.

He described the call as unpatriotic, undemocratic, injusti and unfair to the people of Delta.

“They have come to create an impression that PDP Delta is in crisis, Delta is united,” he said.

The group passed a vote of confidence on Ayu and his led NWC for providing the party with sound leadership, for conducting successful and transparent primaries in all the states including Delta for the party nominations for 2023. “Under his leadership, the party was fully mobilsed and packaged to reclaim governorship victory for Osun State from the APC,” Dagidi said.

Addressing the group, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, who received a  letter from the members aid their actions demonstrated that PDP in Delta was united.

“Since 1999 Delta state has been solidly PDP and we believe that from this presentation that Delta is solidly PDP.

“To that extent, we have taken note of the what you have said, your concerns and consistent with the position of this NWC, we shall look at it and respond accordingly,” he said.

Ologunagba, who appreciated the group for passing a vote of confidence on the Ayu-led executive, urged them to continue to be united for the party to win 2023 general elections.

“The only way we can do that is to be united and you have demonstrated that, that we are united from the heart of the PDP which is Delta.

“We urge you to continue to be united so that by 2023 we can celebrate the victory for PDP,” Ologunagba said.

Oyo 2023: Adegoke, others dump Folarin, joins Adelabu in Accord

The governorship ambition of Chief Adebayo Adelabu of Accord party, on Monday received a major boost as Chief Adegboyega Adegoke, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Mr Fatai Adesina of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) joined forces with him.

The Media Aide of Adelabu, Mr Femi Awogboro, said in a statement in Ibadan, that the two political big wigs decided to join Accord Party to actualise the governorship ambition of Adelabu.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adegoke was an APC Senatorial Aspirant for Oyo South, while Adeshina, a former member of the State Assembly.

Awogboro said: “Yes, it’s home coming for both of them.

Adegoke, the Aare-Onibon Balogun of Ibadanland and Chairman of Solution FM, contested the primaries for Oyo South Senatorial District in APC.

“Adesina was elected as an Assembly member on the platform of Accord Party in 2015. “Chief Adelabu campaign team is strategically moving.

The support we are receiving, especially in the last few weeks, is an indication that Accord is the credible alternative party to move the state forward from 2023.” He said that the party had attracted people who have passion for economic and infrastructure development of the state.

Awogboro said that the party would welcome more bigwigs from APC and PDP in the coming months to ensure that good governance was achieved in the state.

Commenting, Adegoke, a Chartered Accountant, said he joined Adelabu’s team with all his political supporters and associates across the state.

He described Adelabu as an asset, saying that the Accord flagbearer would not embezzle public funds or accumulate wealth for himself.

“Adelabu, who has all his investments in the state, will perform excellently better than any of the governorship candidates in other political parties.

“It’s common sense for me to be in support of his ambition, without looking back.

Adelabu is someone who has passion for infrastructure development and industrialisation of Oyo State,” he said.

Adegoke said that Adelabu believes in empowerment skills for women, youths and entrepreneurs.

Adeshina said that he had only reunited with Accord and Adelabu for the progress of the state.

No amount of blackmail ‘ll stop APC from taking over Bauchi: Official

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says it is focused on dislodging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led administration in Bauchi State in 2023, in spite of intimidation and blackmail.

This is contained in a statement signed by Alhaji Salisu Barau, the Chairman, Air Marshal Abubakar Media and Publicity Committee on Monday in Bauchi.

Barau was reacting to an online publication alledging that the party plans to engage 1000 thugs to rigg the election in its favour.

He said that the state APC governorship candidate, Retired Air Marshal Saddique Abubakar and his campaign team were committed toward winning the election in a free, fair and credible contest.

“Our attention has been drawn to a comical political publication trending as news item and published by an online newspaper with a captioned “Ex-Chief of Air Staff, Sadique, ruling APC recruit 1000 militants, political thugs ahead of Bauchi governorship election.

“This story is ostensibly fabricated to mislead Bauchi voters who are increasingly showing interests in ensuring the success of the APC candidate in the 2023 gubernatorial election due to failure of the ruling party to provide the state with purposeful leadership and dividends of democracy in the past three years.

”This political mischief, wrapped in a news garment, is apparently a dirty political hatchet job that calls for immediate clarification from the Abubakar media office,” he said.
