    UNGA President travels to Rwanda, plans to attend CHOGM

    The President of the 76th Session of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, will travel to Rwanda for a 3-day official visit on the invitation of the government.

    Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly, Ms Paulina Greer, in a statement on Wednesday, said the 3-day visit would be from Thursday to Saturday.

    The visit coincides with the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Rwanda.

    As part of his Commonwealth engagements, Shahid will participate in the Commonwealth Business Forum 2022, which is held this year on the theme of “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.”

    He will also take part in a high-level event entitled “Keeping 1.5 Alive,” co-hosted by the governments of Rwanda and the UK, and the COP26 Presidency.

    A proponent of gender equality, President Shahid will also participate in a high-level event on ending violence against women, hosted by the First Lady of Rwanda, Jeannette Kagame.

    While in Kigali, Greer said the president of the General Assembly is expected to meet with President Paul Kagame.

    He will also meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Vincent Biruta.

    The topics of discussion are expected to include the five priority areas of the Presidency of Hope, namely COVID recovery, sustainable development, prioritising the needs of the planet, human rights and UN revitalisation.

    Shahid will engage with young civil society leaders at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

    He will also meet with UN Country Team in Rwanda, led by Resident Coordinator Fodé Ndiaye.

    Similarly, UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has departed New York for Kigali to attend CHOGM.

    According to UN Spokesperson, Mr Stephane Dujarric, Mohammed left New York on Tuesday evening to attend the meeting, holding between June 20 and June 26.

    The theme for CHOGM 2022 is, “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.”

    Dujarric said Mohammed would also be meeting with UN officials and other stakeholders in Rwanda. (

    UNGA elects Korosi of Hungry President 77th session

    The UN General Assembly, on Tuesday, elected Csaba Korosi, a top Hungarian diplomat, as President of the 77th session.

    Korosi will replace the current President of the General Assembly, Abdullah Shahid of Maldives, who presided over the 76th session.

    Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly, Ms Paulina Greer, announced this at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York.

    Greer said Member States elected Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi of Hungary as the President of the 77th session of the General Assembly this morning.

    “President-elect Kőrösi was elected by acclimation, meaning without a vote,’’ she said.

    Reacting to the election, the spokesperson said the current President, Abdulla Shahid, expressed his sincere congratulations and wished him and his team the very best.

    Greer said the General Assembly also elected 16 new Vice-Presidents (VPs) of the General Assembly for the 77th session, who will serve in their national capacity.

    According to her, the 21 elected VPs are elected to the following patterns.

    “Six representatives from African States: Benin, Burundi, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger and Zimbabwe.

    “Five representatives from Asia-Pacific States; One representative from an Eastern European State and three representatives from Latin American and Caribbean States.

    “Others are from two representatives from Western European or other States; five representatives from the permanent members of the Security Council.’’

    Korosi, 64, who was Hungary’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York between 2010 and 2014, is currently the Director for Environmental Sustainability at the Office of the President of Hungary.

    Pakistan welcomed Korosi’s election on behalf of the Asia-Pacific States Group and assured him of full support of the group.

    “We are confident that given his vast experience and distinguished career in the field of diplomacy, he would make a positive contribution to the success of the Assembly’s upcoming session,” Ambassador Aamir Khan, Acting Pakistan Permanent Representative to the UN, said. (

    UNGA votes Czech Republic to replace Russia on Human Rights Council

    The UN General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly for the Czech Republic to replace Russia on Human Rights Council, following its suspension over allegations of horrific rights violations by Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

    Spokesperson for General Assembly President, Abdulla Shahid, Ms Paulina Greer  announced this at a news conference on Tuesday at the UN Headquarters, New York.

    “In the General Assembly Hall this morning, Member States held an election to fill the vacancy on the Human Rights Council.

    “The Czech Republic was elected by secret ballot.

    “It obtained 157 votes, the totality of the present and voting Member States,’’ Greer said.

    180 of the General Assembly’s 193 members voted and 157 countries voted in favour of the Czech Republic, and 23 countries abstained from voting.

    The assembly approved a U.S.-initiated resolution on April 7 to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.

    The resolution received a two-thirds majority in the 193-member Assembly, with 93 nations voting in favour and 24 against. Fifty-eight abstained from the process.

    The UN correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria is among the 58 countries that abstained from voting.

    The vote on the floor of the UN makes Russia the first permanent member of the UN Security Council to have its membership revoked from any UN body. (
