How Adeboye attempted mediating in Oyetola, Aregbesola rift —Lawmaker

Rep. Lawrence Ayeni (APC-Osun) says Pastor Enoch Adeboye has tried to settle the political rift between Osun Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and his predecessor, Rauf Aregbesola, to no avail.

Adeboye, who is the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Aregbesola, the incumbent Minister of Interior, are both from Osun. Ayeni, who represents Ilesha East, Atakumosa West Federal Constituency of Osun, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.

It would be recalled that the state’s July 15 governorship election was won by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) due to the rift between the group and The Osun Progressive (TOP).

The IleriOluwa group is headed by the governor, while the TOP group is led by the minister.

Ayeni said a reconciliation meeting aimed at settling the rift between the two gladiators was actually fixed and billed to be mediated by Adeboye but one of them failed to show up.

The lawmaker said that although Adeboye initially declined to mediate in the duo’s political rift, saying he was not a politician, he later accepted the offer to mediate to settle it.

“Adeboye said that for him, he was not a politician and he was not going to poke-nose because of certain things but the two of them could not meet in his house.

“Had it been they were able to meet him may be the crisis would have been over.

“One of them did not even go for the scheduled meeting with Adeboye and Adeboye said well, that is it,” he said.

Rep Ayeni said that others like former interim Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, former Gov. Segun Osoba and even the Presidential candidate of APC, Sen Bola Tinubu also tried to settle the rift to no avail.

He said that all the APC House of Reps members from Osun also did all their best possible to also resolve the crisis but met a brick wall.

According to him, “and up to the stage that the election was approaching, the chairman of the party called them, but if one side comes today, the other won’t come.

The lawmaker said that to date, he could not explain what could have happened between the duo, adding that it was better the rift was settled so that it would not affect the party in the general elections.

He called on the two to sit down and resolve the issue, adding that he was hopeful they would come together.

Ayeni said that the major thing that contributed to the APC’s loss was lack of unity, adding that there was no unity in the party and any house that was divided against itself would  not stand.

He said, “had it been we were united, the opposition could not have found their way even through rigging, so we must ensure unity in the party.

The lawmaker said that that everyone had seen the result of the division in the governorship election and learned a lesson from it.

He added that Osun was critical to the South West and the party must put its house in order to win in 2023. Ayeni said that the division could also affect his own re-election bid, having secured his return ticket as the party’s candidate; hence all hands must be on deck to win.

He said that what surprised him most was that the APC was supposed to win Ijesha land with what he had done, “but we failed even in my local government.

APC heads to tribunal over Osun governorship poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC), says it plans to challenge the results of the July 16 Osun governorship election at the election petition tribunal.

Mr Gboyega Famodun, the state APC Chairman said this at a news conference on Thursday at the party secretariat, in Osogbo.

Famodun said that the decision followed assurances by the party lawyers who said that there were good grounds to challenge the results after they had studied them.

“We are going to the tribunal.

Our lawyers had informed us that we have good reasons to challenge the results of the election at the tribunal,” he said.

He decried the suspected anti-party activities of an APC faction in the state”The Osun Progressive (TOP)”.

The Chairman said that the faction, which was under the control of the Minister of Interior and former Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, worked for the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP), to deny the APC victory at the election.

“The recent  protest by the group, calling for his removal as the party’s chairman  and the restructuring of the party, after they openly supported  the PDP candidate, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, during the governorship election was shameful and wicked.

“Our position is that the protest was shameful, callous, primitive, selfish, wicked, misplaced and inconsiderate for the Aregbesola supporters, who glaringly worked against the success of Gov. Oyetola at the polls, to now be canvassing restructuring of the party through a sponsored protest.

“Assuming without conceding that there are challenges within the party, the protesters and their patron should know that they lack moral right to either suggest or effect any likely solution for the restructuring of our party, as it is on record that they massively and collectively worked against Oyetola.

“Since  members of the factional group  (TOP) people, had done their worst by working assiduously and conscientiously by teaming up with the PDP for the success of Adeleke, which is the highest level of an anti-party activity that can be committed by any politician, it will be a needless venture to enter into any pact with the  group that is bereft of honour,” he said.

Highlights of the briefing included the passing of a Voters of Confidence on Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and Famodun by the state executive of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on July 17, declared Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the PDP as the winner of the Osun governorship election with 403,371 votes.

While Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of APC placed second with 375,027 votes.

Osun election: APC factional members protest, call for restructuring

Some factional members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, known as ‘The Osun Progressive’ (TOP), on Tuesday, held a protest in Osogbo, calling for restructuring of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the placard-carrying party members called for the restructuring of APC in the state following the party’s defeat in the July 16 governorship election.

The party members carried various placards with inscriptions like: “Osun APC Needs Restructuring, Famodun Must Go; Save Osun APC from Total Collapse, Aregbesola is the Soul of Politics in Osun, among others.

The protesting APC members also called for the sacking of the state party chairman, Gboyega Famodun.

The members, who marched through Odi-Olowo, Olaiya, Ogo-Oluwa protected by armed security operatives, finally made their way to the Osun House of Assembly where they delivered a letter to the Speaker, Timothy Owoeye.

Addressing newsmen, the factional youth leader, Abosede Oluwaseun, said the party needed to be restructured from unit, ward, local government and state levels for it to be united and formidable ahead of the coming general elections.

“With conscious, sincere and objective analysis of the outcome of the governorship election, we discovered that the electoral loss is not only self-induced by the party’s administrators, it also reflects party issues which had been raised by concerned minds in the recent past.

“The issues, to summarise them, boil down on glaring mismanagement of the party by Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and the party chairman, Gboyega Famodun.

“The chairman has totally demonstrated lack of capacity to manage the party and this reflects in the result of the July 16 governorship election.

“As a chairman of a ruling party going for election, Famodun didn’t consider it essential to resolve disputes and crises that dotted all the local governments in the state.

“Before the governorship election and till now, there is no understanding, cooperation, unity and cohesion in the party,” she said.

Oluwaseun said that their demand included dissolution of the party executive at all levels in the state and setting up of an independent caretaker committee to oversee the restructuring of the party among others.

Mr Timothy Owoeye, Osun Speaker, who addressed the protesters, assured them that necessary steps would be taken to make sure the party is united and formidable.

In his own reaction to the protest, the APC Chairman in Osun, Gboyega Famodun, condemned the protest, describing it as shameful, callous and wicked.

A statement by his Media Adviser, Kola Olabisi, said that the protest was misplaced and inconsiderate.

Famodun alleged that the APC factional members had worked against the success of Gov. Oyetola at the polls.

“Assuming but not conceding that there are challenges within the party, the protesters should be told that they lack moral right to either suggest or effect any likely solution as it is on record that they massively and collectively worked against Gov. Oyetola, the APC governorship candidate, in the just-concluded election in line with the series of their threat.

“One would have thought that the appropriate place for them to canvass for the restructuring of any party is Senator Ademola Adeleke’s Ede country home, whom they voted for with flaunted pride,” he said.
