Eritrea: Minister Osman Saleh addresses the United Nations (UN) General Assembly

Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister for Foreign Affairs, addressed the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations today, September 26.

In his speech, Minister Osman Saleh said that the annual session of the UN General Assembly, held under the appropriate theme: "A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Intertwined Challenges", is taking place at an extremely worrying time of deep , intertwined and multiple crises of epic proportions and these calamities have negatively impacted every corner of the global village.

Minister Osman went on to say that over the past two and a half years, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacted a huge human toll in global terms and has instilled chronic economic hardship and structural setbacks through domestic economic downturns and supply chain disruption.

and that While this scourge persists, the world is facing these days the equally dangerous consequences of climate change and global warming, which are exacerbating the already precarious situation.

Furthermore, Minister Osman said that the cyclical conflicts, which have assumed exceptionally dangerous and almost apocalyptic dimensions with the war in Ukraine, have increased the looming crises to unprecedented levels and, in addition to the Covid-19 pandemic, the other variables and The interlocking dimensions of the crises constitute the cumulative consequences and telltale symptoms of a tenuous and highly flawed global governance architecture and are by-products and manifestations of the systemic failure of the unipolar world order that has prevailed for more than thirty years.

Minister Osman emphasized that the much vaunted “rules-based international order” represents a lopsided set of misleading, asymmetric and non-consensual rules and regulations and was essentially designed to promote and safeguard the privileges of its chief architects; to the exclusion of the majority of other nations and peoples and promotes a monolithic and condescending ideological perspective that leaves no room for the historical context, the different realities and cultures and, above all, the independent political decisions of other peoples and nations sovereigns.

The costly wars of intervention, especially in Africa and the Middle East in the last thirty years; heavy-handed interference in domestic affairs; imposition of illegal and unilateral sanctions; distortion and militarization of human rights; In summary, all episodes of international and regional instability emanate and are direct derivatives of the faulty architecture of global governance, Minister Osman stressed.

Minister Osman emphasized that the negative ramifications of this dysfunctional system are not limited to the sovereign nations and peoples of the Global South but to extreme and ridiculous inequalities where less than 1% of the population owns 99% of the national wealth; the rampant consumerism that has spawned and continues to aggravate climate change; atomization of societies that have literally decimated social compassion and community care by fostering exclusive and unnatural individualism; they are dangerous trends that will ultimately undermine the social fabric and stability in individual countries and the global village at large.

Minister Osman further said that Eritrea has indeed borne the brunt of this unjust international order through unlawful sanctions; the use of proxy forces to create a situation of permanent conflict and instability; as much as; the militarization of human rights to isolate and ostracize the young nation.

Regarding Eritrea's opinion, Minister Osman stressed the need for the global village and the UN system to design a new international order that is based on consensus with the full and equal participation of its constituents; the sacrosanct principles of the equality of all Member States and respect for the sovereignty and political independence of the nations and peoples that must defend themselves; equitable representation of all member states in all international decision-making bodies will be ensured through viable and sustainable modalities and mechanisms; and the selective and partial parameters that prevent collective well-being and the promotion of a compassionate social system require a profound review.
