Ondo Sea Port will boost economy- Commissioner

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State

The Ondo state government said Wednesday that the Ondo deepwater port, when operational, will create massive job opportunities and boost the nation's economy.

Prince Boye Ologbese, Commissioner for Regional Integration and Diaspora, Ondo State, had this to say at the 2022 Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS) in Abuja.

Ologbese explained that projecting and redeveloping the Ondo deep-water port for the nation's export business would not only balance the foreign exchange market, but also create job opportunities, especially in the southwestern region.

He added that the summit theme "Investment Opportunities in Ondo State" was deliberately coined in line with the vision and "Redeemed Agenda" of the current administration of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

He noted that the theme was geared towards boosting key business potentials for socio-economic development, especially as technology was rapidly advancing ahead of county crude oil.

According to him, as a means of revenue for the nation and our unstable foreign exchange market, planning and designing our Ondo deep-water port for the nation's export business will not only balance the foreign exchange market.

“It will strengthen our naira and also create many employment opportunities for our young teams across the South West region.

“Therefore, the summit aims to position Ondo State as an investment destination among the three most competitive states in Nigeria in terms of accelerated growth, increased economic opportunities and better quality of life for citizens.

“It also aims to promote investment opportunities and foster synergy, as well as partnership between government institutions and the private sectors, which are critical players in the nation's socio-economic development.

“It is for this reason that the Ondo State Ministry of Regional Integration and Diaspora Relations was created, with the objectives of providing strategic advice and support to the government to promote economic development and attract investors within and in the diaspora.

“You will be interested to know that the proper participation of our diasporas will boost the economic growth of this country.”

He expressed his confidence that investors and businessmen will leave the summit with a better understanding of investment opportunities in Ondo State and more optimism for the future.

“As a government, we await the resolution of this summit for its implementation.

The Nigerian News Agency ( ) reports that the NDIS has as its theme: “Optimizing investment opportunities for national development”.

It also informs that the summit that would end this Thursday will focus on the investment opportunities of Ondo State.

Akeredolu harps on collaboration among security agencies

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has reiterated the need for collaborative efforts among security agencies operating in the state for effective protection of lives and property.

Akeredolu said that his administration would continue to prioritise security issues and give support to all security agencies in the state.

He spoke on Wednesday while playing host to the new Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Ondo State Command, Mrs Oluwafunmilayo Bosede.

The governor urged the command to do more in safeguarding lives and property.

On the Owo June 5 attack on a Catholic Church, the governor disclosed that the state was planning a memorial for the victims.

“We will put something in place in memory of all those who were gruesomely murdered.

It is good to know that some of the culprits have been apprehended,” Akeredolu said.

Earlier, the comptroller, who is an indigene of Akure, congratulated Akeredolu for bagging the National Honours of the Commander of the Order of the Niger, (CON).

She particularly applauded Akeredolu for his passion and love for the people which made him to champion the establishment of the Amotekun Corps that is addressing the security challenges in the state and other states in the South-West. The comptroller promised to synergise with other security agencies to further reduce criminality, just as she condemned the attack unleashed on the Catholic Church in Owo by terrorists.

Bosede, who was in company of other top officials of the Command, assured the governor of continued collaboration with the government towards securing the state and the people.

“All thanks to our amiable governor who has once again demonstrated his love for his people through the establishment of Amotekun,“ she said.

“On our part as immigration officers, we promise to join force with other security agencies in order to maintain effective and efficient security within the mandate of our operation,” she said.

FRSC cautions politicians against reckless driving during campaigns

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged political parties to respect and obey traffic rules during campaigns as only the living rules.

The corps also urged all drivers to avoid speeding and recklessness while on the road.

The call was made during the launch of the ember months campaign in Ondo State on Thursday.

Mr Uakhemen Ojeamiren, the Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ondo states flagged off the campaign at Ilesha motor park in Akure.

The theme of the 2022 ember months campaign is “Avoid Speeding, Avoid Overloading And Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive”.

Ojeamiren said the ember months were characterised by high vehicular movements and more accidents because of the tendency of drivers to be impatient and in a hurry.

He said that it was imperative for motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, intake of alcohol and use of expired tyres to avoid traffic accidents.

The zonal officer said that the corps had undertaken numerous enlightenment programmes in the media, motor parks and places of worship on the need for safe driving.

“I am appealing to motorists particularly the people of Ondo state to desist and have attitudinal change while driving to arrive safety during the yuletide.

“Drivers must be conscious while driving and avoid speeding, avoid use of expired tyres and ensure that they have their driving licence with them,” he said.

Also, Ezekiel SonAllah, the Sector Commander, said it was important for stakeholders to collaborate and ensure safety on the road.

He said already, the command had recorded about 20 per cent road accidents of the figure recorded within the same period in 2021. According to him, 126 road traffic crashes involving 879 persons were recorded during the ember months in 2021. He said that out of the figure, 148 were injured and 96 died, adding that at the moment the command has barely recorded 20 per cent of what it did in the previous year.

“I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to political parties to respect and obey traffic rules and avoid reckless driving during campaigns as only the living rules.

“The command is out to remind you that you can only celebrate when you arrive alive, hence the need for united efforts against wrong use of the road,” he said.

The sector commander said erring driver would be dealt with decisively and assured that the road marshals would continue to take measures to save the lives of road users.

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, represented by his Senior Adviser on Transport, Tobi Ogunleye, pledged more support to the FRSC to discharge its duties.

Akeredolu said the government had established a driving school to provide lessons and orientation for drivers, to ensure safe driving culture.

“We have re-launched the state Passenger Transit Safety Insurance Scheme where every passenger is covered in case of accident for free medical treatment.

“We will continue to construct and rehabilitate more roads, because the lives of our people is more important to us.

“We therefore call on other major stakeholders to join hands with the FRSC to save lives especially on highways,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the campaign was attended by the state Commandant of NSCDC, Olayinka Olatundun; representatives of the Police, Army, NDLEA and DSS, as well as the Deji of Akure, among others.

The protesting communities were Graceland Estate, Grace Garden City, God’s Ownland and Bethel Estate, all located in Oba-Ile area.

They appealed to Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to urgently come to their aid by fixing the roads.

The protesting residents carried various placards with inscriptions such as “We Are communities of Over 3,000 Families.

    We Need Roads Urgently.

Mr. Gov. A Wa Lokan“;  “Our Cars Are Crying For Help!

Aketi Please, Come to Our Rescue“; Aketi, We Are 4 You. Let US Be Part Of The Giant Strides In Road Networks In Ondo State.

“ While addressing newsmen during the peaceful protest, Mr Martins Popoola, Chairman, Graceland Estate, explained that for the past 10 years, the residents had resorted to self-help by contributing money to maintain the roads without any help from the state government.

Popoola, who said that the residents were aware that Akeredolu was improving infrastructure, especially roads across the state, said if the bad roads in their communities were fixed, they had the capacity to decongest and reduce pressure on the road linking the airport.

“We have heard that he has approved the reconstruction of the roads but that there is no funds to back the approval.

“We are begging him to `take money out of no money“, as he has done in other places to please fix the roads.

“We are expanding every day, it is the road that is holding us back, this road is very important to our lives and property.

Property values would have doubled if not for the bad roads,“ he said.

Also speaking, Mr Oladele Aliu, Chairman, God’s Ownland, who also expressed appreciation to the governor for his “giant strides“ in the areas of security and infrastructure .

He appealed to the state government to fix the roads in their communities to improve the living standards of the residents.

“Mr Governor has been doing major roads across the state, especially in places such as Ikare-Akoko, Okitipupa, Akure and Owo, among others.

“He has been christened `Mr Talk-And-Do` while in some quarters he is known as `Mr Project`.

Now it is our time to be rescued from the bad roads in our communities,” Aliu said.

Mrs Kafayat Musa, another resident, said that the roads had cause her backaches while her sister-in-law had been ill for two weeks due to the bad roads they were plying every day.

Mr Victor Ajimuda and Mrs Awotimehin also lamented the roads that were unmotorable in the communities, saying they were spending much to fix their vehicles weekly.

“We are pleading with Mr Governor to come to our assistance and help us fix these roads because our cars are going bad daily and things are getting ery expensive,” Ajimuda said.

Nutrition: Ondo Govt. sensitises mothers on proper child feeding requirements

The Ondo State Ministry of Health on Thursday  sensitised some  nursing mothers in Akure on  proper ways of feeding their children to enhance such children’s  growth and development.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Folukemi Aladenola, said that the sensitisation programmes held in Akure Police Clinic, was to reduce malnutrition in children between six months and 23 months old.

Aladenola added that the state primary healthcare facilities had already embarked on food demonstrations to children caregivers ,adding that it  would soon be extended  to secondary and tertiary health facilities.

According to her, the purpose of the extension is to ensure that children using the health facilities would not miss out  from the benefits.

She disclosed that secondary and tertiary health facilities were yet  to offer the food demonstration clinics due  to lack of support and availability of nutrition personnel.

The permanent secretary said that it was necessary to enhance caregivers’ capacity to provide adequate and nutritious meals to their wards through food demonstration in the health facilities.

Aladenola expressed optimism that the programme would  reduce stunted growth in children  within the age range.

She said that the state governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,  had supported the proramme through  the provision of infrastructural facilities, maternal and child survival enhancing programmes, and funding.

He had also provided  funds to prevent and manage disease outbreak and others in the state, she said.

The permanent secretary, who said that the intervention would  also prevent the outbreak of diseases, enjoined the participants to always make their children available for dieticians’ advice to enhance their growth.

In his lecture, Mr Isaac Omoniyi, a lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, said that good nutrition was good for child’s survival and development.

Omoniyi said that 70 per cent of a child’s capacity could be determined within two years of the child’s life, starting from the  womb.

“If a mother does not eat well, it will have effects on her children.

70 per cent of what a child wants to achieve can be gotten within two  years of his or her birth starting from the womb.

    “Nutrition is very important.

    Eat very well.

Exclusive breastfeeding is a must for a period of six months.

It is the best for a child.

90 per cent of breastmilk is water .

The breastmilk is enough  when given as appropriate.

“The first seven  minutes of breastfeeding will bring water while the next seven minutes will contain carbohydrates and the rest.

Spend time in feeding your child.

If given exclusive feeding as appropriate, the child will be attractive to all.

“You can’t practise exclusive breastfeeding  for more than six months.

After that, breastmilk alone is not sufficient.

    You must Include complementary food.

“Therefore, lay good foundation of two years for your children,” he said.

According to him, nutrients in the breastmilk after six months will not be enough for the child.

The lecturer urged mothers to allow  the composition in complementary food given to their children to be rich in content.

“ After exclusive breastfeeding, you are expected to be  introducing the food gradually to your child .

    Don’t rush food to them.

You can blend fruit and give them.

“ You must note that the goal  standard by UNICEF recommendation is two years for breastfeeding .

Brain development starts from food consumption.

“ As the child grows, the consistency of the food will change.

“ They don’t need more than one egg per day, because a child does not need more  than 14 grammes of protein per day.

Don’t load the child with too much protein.

“Egg is the goal standard for protein, no waste in it.

Protein in soya milk is not advisable.

Don’t let them be on monotonous diet,” he stated.

A participant, Mrs Yemisi Akindureli, thanked the state Ministry of Health  for the teaching on proper nutrition.

The programme had earlier been held at  the state’s General Hospitals in Bolorunduro, Igbara Oke, Ita Ogbolu, Ore, Idanre and Akure Mother and Child Hospital.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that  the food demonstration programme was meant to expose  nursing mothers to how best they should be preparing food for their children.

FG declares support for Ondo Deep Sea Port

Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu  Sambo, said the Federal Government would soon officially declare the proposed Ondo Sea Port facility as a Deep Sea Port, to herald commencement of other processes at the facility.

Sambo, in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr Eric Ojiekwe, gave the indication when he received Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo on Wednesday.

The minister commended the steps taken so far by the state government to prepare for the Federal Government’s declaration on the port.

After listening to a technical presentation by the Consultants to the Ondo State Government, Sambo said the Federal Government would not hesitate to make the Ondo Port Declaration, pursuant to Section 30 of the Ports Act. He added that this would be done after all the prerequisites established by the extant laws were met.

“We want to see this port come to life before the end of this administration; having another deep sea port will do a lot of good to the blue economy policy of the Federal Government,” Sambo stated .

On flurry of sea ports, Sambo said it was a positive thing, as presence of the atlantic ocean, the Rivers Niger and Benue, positions Nigeria to harness, explore and export its rich minerals to other countries.

According to the minister, there are only two deep sea ports in Nigeria, while all others are river ports, including Apapa and Tin-Can ports.

He said that the development of a Deep Sea Port in Ondo was a welcome development to the country at large.

Earlier, Gov. Akeredolu said the visit was to acquaint the Transport Ministry with the state’s vision of developing a deep seaport in Ilaje, Ondo, in accordance with Federal Government’s module of Public Private Partnership.

Akeredolu said the port would bring enormous socio economic benefits to the Federal Government, the state and the host communities.

He added that Dubai Port and China Habour were among the many international partners that signalled their interest in developing the port.

Also, The Minister of State for Transportation, Ademola Adegoroye, said the Ondo State Government had made a compelling case for the port.

According to Adegoroye, the minister is a seasoned technocrat, having ventured across board of the Nigerian Ports Authority and the National Inland Waterways and knows the importance of the Port Ondo project.

He, therefore, assured the Ondo governor that the  Transport Ministry would attach priority to the project.

He said the  ministry would like to see the Port come to life before the end of the tenure of office.

Akeredolu eulogises NSCDC commandant’s commitment to humanity

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has eulogised the state Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC ), Dr Hameed Abodunrin, for his commitment to service of humanity.

Akeredolu gave the commendation in Akure on Wednesday at the send-off programme organised for the commandant by the state command of the NSCDC and the presentation of his books on children’s security.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, described Abodunrin as a real security expert and scholar who had helped the government in enforcement of law and order in the state.

Akeredolu, who also acknowledged the roles played by the NSCDC in ensuring the security of lives and property of the people, said Abodunrin’s efforts at securing the state had yielded positive results since he was posted to the state.

According to him, the roles played by the NSCDC at securing the state in the last 15 months that Abodunrin took over the helm of affairs of NSCDC cannot be underestimated.

“I can tell you, Abodunrin is a fine officer, very smart, very skilful, highly educated and also a combatant.

“Abodunrin has proved to be a security expert and a real scholar.

His academic prowess has been brought to the fore and he has proved that his doctorate degree in peace and conflict studies, which he bagged from the University of Ibadan, is valuable.

“This is a man that loves training and to retrain.

No wonder he is now going back to be retrained at the National Defence College in Abuja for him to be more effective in his job.

“On behalf of the good people of Ondo State, the government and all the people of the state, thank you for your immense contributions to the security of the state.

“For your service to humanity; for the protection of lives and property of everyone both indigenes and residents of Ondo State during the time you spent with us, we want to say thank you,” he said.

The governor also called on officers and men of the NSCDC in the state to continue with the foundation laid by Abodunrin in the area of security and intelligence gathering.

Akeredolu, who also talked about the books written by the commandant, said they would not only help the children but also their parents or those managing schools, saying it would be good for policy makers.

“Security is everybody’s business not just for security agents alone and it is high time we begin to learn the basics of security,” he said.

Earlier, Abodunrin appreciated the state government and security agencies for their support and expressed his willingness to continue to serve humanity and the society in any position.

He explained that his success was as a result of the support and cooperation he enjoyed from the officers and men of the command.

He said the decision to write the books was borne out concern for the security of children in the country.

Abodunrin, who said his 15 months in Ondo State birthed the establishment of two marines based in the state, said a bullet-proof multi-million gunboat was also inaugurated while an ambulance and a Jeep were also given by the NSCDC headquarters, Abuja.

“I am not regretting for staying in Ondo State but the only thing that I am still worried about is the consciousness of our people as far as security is concerned,” he said.

Similarly, Dr Bode Ayorinde, Pro Chancellor of Achievers University, Owo, and Chairman of the occasion, eulogised the giant stride of the commandant in the state, saying those who took the security of the country as a career should be celebrated.

“Security comes first as number one in the society because without security, there will be no peace and development.

So it is when people are secured that we can talk about development,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Commander of 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure; Controllers of Nigeria Immigration Service; Nigeria Customs Service; Nigeria Correctional Service were at the occasion.

Others present were, representatives of Department of State Services; Commander of Air Force Base 209 Quick Response, Ipetu-Ijesa; Federal Road Safety Corps, Fire Services, amongst others.
