Abakaliki, June 25, 2023 An Abakiliki-based Non-governmental Organization (NGO), called Amaka Foundation, has advised aggrieved Ebonyi PDP chieftains to embrace peace, unite and work for the party’s victory in 2022.
Thr of the organisation, Mrs Amaka Engene, gave the advice in a congratulatory message to the party’s Governorship Candidate, Dr Ifeanyichukwuma Odii.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Federal High Court in the state had on June 7 declared Odii the winner of the party’s primary held on May 29.
The court also nullified the rescheduled primary election of June 6, that produced Sen. Obinna Ogba, representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone, as the governorship candidate.
It declared Ogba’s election as null and void.
Following the court’s verdict, the party’s leadership presented Odii with the Certificate of Return on June 20.
In its message, Engene stated: “We call on all agrieved PDP members in the state to embrace peace in order to move the party forward.
“On behalf of myself and the teeming the foundation, I congratulate Odii and his wife, Ebele, on his emergence as the party’s gubernatorial flag bearer.
“It is a victory for Ebonyi People.
“We also congratulate Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on his emergence as the Vice Presidential Candidate of the party.
“Our foundation will continue to stand with Odii on this monumental victory.
“He has the capacity for job creation and human capital development.
“We pray that the victory will bring about prosperity and wealth in the state,” Engene stated.
He further stated that the group had begun the sensitisation of communities on the need to get their voter cards.
He stated that getting their voter cards is to enable them to vote for PDP candidates at all levels in the general elections.
Sen. Obinna Ogba, a factional governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi, has nominated Dr Oliver Osi as his running mate.
Osi is currently a lawmaker representing Ivo State Constituency in the Ebonyi House of Assembly.
His nomination was conveyed in a letter dated June 22 addressed to Sen. Iyiorcha Ayu, National Chairman of PDP.
Ogba, who is representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone in the Senate, said Osi’s nomination was in compliance with provisions of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution..
The letter read: “In compliance with Section 187(1) and (2) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution, as amended, the electoral guidelines and the PDP guidelines, I write to convey my nomination of Dr Oliver Osi as the deputy governorship candidate of our great party in the 2023 general election.
“His nomination is the outcome of detailed and wide ranging consultations with party stakeholders in the state. I have no doubt that his inclusion will add strong electoral value to our ticket.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ogba was elected the PDP governorship candidate in primary the election conducted by a faction led by Mr Tochukwu Okorie on June 5.
However, an Abakaliki Federal High Court earlier in June nullified the primary election conducted by the Ogba group and upheld the primaries conducted by Mr Silas Onu’s led faction.
The Onu’s faction elected Dr Ifeanyochukwu Odii as the party’s governorship candidate on May 29.
Both Okorie and Onu are laying claims to the chairmanship of the party in Ebonyi.
Sen. Obinna Ogba, the factional governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for 2023 polls in Ebonyi has expressed confidence that he will emerge victorious in the crisis rocking the party.
This is contained in statement issued in Abakaliki on Wednesday signed by Mr Godfrey Chikwere, Special Assistant to Ogba on Media.
Ogba, who expressed confidence in securing victory at the court, praised the party and his supporters for their prayers.
The statement noted that the Ogba was not relenting in his effort to serve Ebonyi people as their governor.
“The current events ranging from primary election to judicial processes are no doubt a calculated political distraction.
“Anybody that is conversant with Ogba’s political trajectory will understand that he has fought, worked and walked for any of his victories and political positions with God and the people as his key focus.
“It is a matter of time the people of Ebonyi will be happy again. We, therefore, encourage all our followers to keep faith and hope alive because the victory is already in sight,“ the statement said.
The statement noted that a three-man Court of Appeal panel. sitting in Enugu, had granted Ogba’s prayer to be joined in the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abakaliki .
“ Ogba appealed the said judgment immediately. That is our first step to legal gain and victory.
“We assure you that everything politically and legally possible is on motion; our case is like that of Emordi and Prof. Chukwuma Soludo in Anambra
“At the end of the day, the people, party and court will be on the same page, the statement said.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that a Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki had earlier in the month nullified the primary elections conducted under the leadership of Chief Tochukwu Okorie.
The election held between June 4 and June 5, produced Ogba as the PDP governorship candidate for 2023.
The court upheld the primaries held between May 28 and May 29 were Dr Ifeanyochukwu Odii emerged as the governorhip candidate of the party.
The Youth of Ebonyi under the aegis of Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has lauded the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for issuing Certificate of the Return to Dr Ifeanyichukwuma Odii as the 2023 flag bearer of the party in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the party had on Monday, issued the certificate to Odii, whom the court had on June 7 declared winner of the party’s Governorship primary held on May 29.
The court, however, declared the rescheduled primaries of June 5 and June 6, that brought Senator Obinna Ogba as another gubernatorial candidate as null and void and upheld Odii as the flag bearer of the party.
Odii, popularly called AnyiChuks and Sen. Ogba, representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone had tussled for the governorship ticket of the party with both claiming the authentic candidate.
Mr Kelechi Igwe, State Chairman of NYO, told NAN in Abakaliki on Tuesday, that the youths in the state were happy that the certificate of return was given to Odii as the authentic flag bearer of the PDP in Ebonyi.
“We thank God that the leadership of the party has honoured the decision of the court by issuing Odii the certificate, who is the rightful candidate.
“We, therefore congratulate AnyiChuks. The people’s choice, the incoming youth governor of Ebonyi. We stand with you come 2023.
“We urge for peace among members of the PDP in the state. They should support Odii because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already affirmed the May 29, 2022 primary that produced him as candidate of the party,” Igwe said.
Sen. Obinna Ogba, representing Ebonyi Central senatorial zone and governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ebonyi state, in the 2023 governorship election, has vowed to protect the mandate given to him by the people.
Ogba made the pledge while addressing newsmen on Saturday at his campaign office in Abakaliki.
He added that no amount of intimidation or threat from any quarter would make him to either surrender or reliquish the mandate given to him by the party delegates during the rescheduled PDP primaries in Ebonyi held between June 4 and June 6.
The senator noted that the Certificate of Return (CoR) issued to him by the party in Abuja is an affirmation that he remains the only authentic and recognised governorship candidate for the PDP in Ebonyi in 2023 gubernatorial election.
He congratulated the party leadership and the delegates who voted to entrust him with the party’s flag for the election, saying he is committed to taking the party to victory.
He said: “One thing I know is that nobody no matter the circumstance can intimidate me or take away the mandate given to me by our great party from the backyard; it is not possible.
“No matter how they have ganged up, I’m happy for our delegates have spoken through their votes.
“Twelve of the aspirants have congratulated us except one but, if in an examination you score 12 over 13, you have passed at distinction level.”
The guber candidate who also reacted to a Court judgement nullifying the primary elections that produced him as the PDP governorship candidate in Ebonyi, called on his supporters, PDP faithful and Ebonyi people to remain calm.
“Court is for everyone; it is for the rich and it is for the poor. We are going to respond appropriately and we are going to defeat them the way we defeated them at the party poll,” Ogba added.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that Dr Ifeanyochukwu Odii was elected governorship candidate in a primary election held by a faction led by Mr Silas Onu on May 28 and May 29 which was boycotted by the Ogba group.
However, following the cancellation of the PDP primaries in Ebonyi by the National Working Committee (NWC), the party ordered for fresh primaries in the state.
Ogba emerged winner in the governorship primary conducted under the supervision of Mr Tochukwu Okorie who was recently reinstated to his seat through an Appeal Court judgement delivered in Abuja.
Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Abakaliki, presided by Justice Fatun Riman, on June 7 ruled that the primary elections that produced Ogba and other candidates were illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.
The Court also affirmed the primary elections earlier conducted in the state that produced Odii as governorship candidate of the PDP.
The Judge further ruled that PDP properly constituted a primary election committee and deployed them for the purpose of same and that INEC agreed to have monitored the election and returned candidates transparently.
The Court also held that any other primary elections held after those of May 28 and May 29 were null and void, conferring no benefits or rights whatsoever.
