Flood: Nasarawa Assembly urges relief materials for victims

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has called on the Federal Government to provide relief materials for victims of recent flood disaster in the state.

The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the appeal after Alhaji Tanko Tunga, the Majority Leader, raised the issue under matters of urgent public importance at plenary in Lafia on Monday.

Abdullahi said that the devastated effect of flooding across the state was colossal, hence the need for the intervention.

He said that such support would ameliorate effect of the disaster that wreaked havoc in many communities across the state.

“I want to use this medium to appreciate Hon. Tanko Tunga and all members for your contributions on this subject matter.

“I am also directly affected as 50 per cent of my people are living in riverine communities.

“The devastated effects of flood are huge across the state as many lives, animals, buildings, farm lands, among other properties, are destroyed.

“Many communities across the state affected by the flood are homeless, they are no longer living in their homes,” he said.

The speaker said that because of the effects of flood on the people, he is appealing to the state and federal governments to urgently provide relief materials to the victims.

“I also want to call on the state government to relocate communities affected by flood to a safer place for their comfortability and to improve on their standard of living,” he said.

The speaker also urged the state government to provide more funds to the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) to enable the agency discharge its duties effectively.

He however advised the national and state emergency agencies, Nasarawa Urban Development Board (NUDB) and the National Orientation Agency to be more proactive in their duties.

According to him, people should be sensitised on the dangers of flooding and ensure proper development control across the state.

In his contribution, Mr John Osewu (APC- Doma South) lamented how flood destroyed houses and properties especially among his constituents, rendering them homeless.

He also called for proper funding of NASEMA and urged NUDB to ensure proper development control in the state to avoid flooding.

Earlier, Tunga who raised the issue, said that the 2022 flood appeared to be worst.

“This year’s flooding has inflicted injuries on the lives of many people across the state.

“It has caused a lot of damages to people, destroyed houses and farmlands, even properties were also destroyed.

“I want to call on the government to see how it can alleviate the suffering of the flood victims across the state,” he submitted.

NUDB leadership crisis: Nasarawa Assembly suspends Gov. Sule’s aide

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Gov. Abdullahi Sule on Development Control, Stanley Buba, to pave way for investigation into the activities of the state Urban Development Board (NUDB).

During the House proceedings in Lafia on Wednesday, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House, said the decision was taken because of the need to ensure a thorough investigation into the activities of the board.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the appearance of the SSA followed the House’s resolution of Sept. 7, asking the SSA to give some clarifications on the activities of the Board.

Balarabe-Abdullahi  said the decision was also to give the SSA fair hearing on the leadership crisis between him and the Managing Director of NUDB, Adamu Mohammed.

He issued the summon after Suleiman Azara, Chairman, House Committee on NUDB, raised the issue under matters of Public Importance.

He said that the invitation extended to the SSA was to enable him to explain to the House on why he allegedly undermined the resolutions passed by the House Committee on NUDB over the leadership crisis in the board.

NAN also reports that on Sept. 1, the House Committee on NUDB headed by Suleiman Azara (APC-Awe-South), resolved the leadership crisis in the Board between the Board’s Managing Director, Adamu Mohammed, and Buba.

According to the committee, the law establishing NUDB in the state is clear; the MD is the head of the board.

” In the interest of peace, the SSA should take charge of the board’s activities in western zone, especially zonal office in Karu and all approval in the zonal offices should be granted by the MD, ” the resolution of the committee read in part.

Based on the resolution of the House, the Speaker resolved that Buba should step aside to enable the committee to carry out its duties effectively without interference.

In line with this, the House set up a six-man investigation committee with David Maiyaki (PDP- Karu/Gitata) as Chairman; and Mohammed Okpoku (APC- Udege/Loko) as the Deputy Chairman.

Members of the committee are: Suleiman Yakubu Azara (APC-Awe South), Daniel Ogazi (APC-Kokona East), Abdullahi Angibi (APC- Lafia Central) and Mohammed Bello Isa (APC- Uke/Karshi).

The Secretary of the Committee is the Deputy Clerk to the House, Ibrahim Musa.

The Speaker gave the committee three months to submit its report to the House.

Nasarawa state Assembly summons Gov. Sule’s aide over board’s leadership crisis

Nasarawa State House of Assembly has summoned Mr Stanley Buba, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), to Gov. Abdullahi Sule on Development Control, to appear before it on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020 by 10am over leadership crisis.

The assembly said it summoned Buba to give him a fair hearing on the leadership crisis between him and the Managing Director of the Niger State Urban Development Board (NUDB), Adamu Sule.

The House Speaker, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, issued the summon after Suleiman Azara, Chairman, House Committee on NUDB raised the issue under the matters of public importance during the House proceedings in Lafia on Monday.

Balarabe-Abdullahi said that the invitation extended to the SSA was to enable him to explain to the House on why he undermined the resolutions passed by the House Committee on NUDB over the leadership crisis facing the board.

“I want to commend Mr Suleiman Azara for bringing this matter of public importance and Assembly members for your positive contributions on this matter.

“We are all aware that NUDB is a creation of this House and by law. We cannot sit to allow any person or group of persons undermine the power of this House.

“We are summoning the SSA to appear before this House on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020 by 10am.

“This is to enable him to provide the House or give some clarifications and information on allegation raised by Assembly members against him.

“It will also give him the opportunity to express himself on the leadership crisis; he may have some vital information to give us that we may not know,” the speaker said.

He directed the clerk to the House to communicate the House’s resolution to the SSA on or before the closing hours of Monday.

Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on NUDB, Mr Suleiman Azara (APC-Awe-South) said that the SSA was undermining the power of the committee over the leadership crisis between him and the Managing Director (MD), of the Board.

Azara said that the leadership crisis between the two senior officers undermined the board’s development, hence the need of the committee’s intervention.

“When we invited the affected officials, they both explained their sides of their powers and we have taken a position based on the law that established the NUDB.

“Unfortunately, the SSA proved to the committee that he is more powerful than the committee.

“It is in view of this that I am raising this matter on the need for the House to intervene in order to avert future re-occurrence,” he said.

Mr Daniel Ogazi (APC- Kokona East), and the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, seconded the motion on the need for the House to invite the SSA.

“The responsibility of the SSA is purely advisory. The MD is the head of the board.

“The SSA should appear before the House to explain why he is taking the responsibilities of the MD and the board.

David Maiyaki (PDP- Karu/Gitata), Dr Peter Akwe (PDP- Obi 1), and Mohammed Omadefu (APC-Keana), all supported the motion to summon the SSA on the need for the SSA to appear to explain his action.

According to them, the law establishing NUDB is clear and the Managing Director is the Chief Accounting Officer of the Board while the SSA can only play an advisory role to the governor and management of the board.

The News Agency of Nigeria , recalls that the state House of Assembly Committee on NUDB headed by Azara had on Sept. 1, resolved the leadership crisis rocking NUDB.

Assembly wades into rivalry between Nasarawa govt officials

Nasarawa State House of Assembly has decried the decline in performance of the State Urban Development Board (NUDB) due to crisis of leadership.

There has been challenges between the board’s Managing Director, Adamu Sule-Mohammed and Stanley Buba, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Gov. Abdullahi Sule on Development Control.

Chairman of the state Assembly Committee on NUDB, Mr Suleiman Azara, stated this on Tuesday when management of the board appeared before the committee in Lafia.

He  said that this was not in the best interest of the state and is hampering performance of the board and by extension, the development of the state.

Azara lamented the unhealthy rivalry between the two senior officers of the board while assuring of the committee’s determination to resolve the issue once and for all.

He said that the committee invited the managing director and his management team to know the causes of the problem in the board with a view to addressing them.

” The crisis between the two senior officers of the board  is not in the best interest of the state and is hampering performance of the board and by extension the development of the state, hence the need for urgent intervention by the House.
