NYSC will start revenue generation soon, says DG

The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim on Tuesday in Jos said that the service would soon start revenue generation.

“We are going to start generating revenue and in our next budget we are going to include Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“When we generate the revenue, we can drop something in the treasury and take overhead off government. I have told the man overseeing our ventures that every kobo must be accounted for.

“We must declare everything for Nigerians to see,” Ibrahim said while addressing NYSC staff in Plateau

The NYSC boss said that service was employing several avenues to generate revenue, saying that one of the avenues was to revive NYSC farms across the country.

He noted the security of those working on the farms would be given the desired attention.

Ibrahim, however, said he had discussed with the National Security Adviser to task the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to give them agro rangers to protect corps members and the farms.

He said: “The DG zonal and local government inspectors must have your ears on the ground because of the security challenges.’’

Ibrahim advised them to liaise with the Department of State Security (DSS), saying that they do receive early information on security threat.

The DG also warned against the abuse of regular permission to corps members to travel out of their primary assignment locations, adding that corps members’ movement should be adequately regulated.

Ibrahim also advised the management to carry their staff along in the discharge of their duties and should be exemplary in their conduct.

Corps members in Enugu decry high cost of house rent

Some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Enugu State have expressed concern over the high cost of house rent in Enugu and its environs.

The corps members who spoke in separate interviews told the Nigeria News Agency in Enugu, that the situation had posed much difficulty on them as they were paid a paltry N800 and N1,000 as monthly allowance by the state government.

NAN reports that the cost of rent of one bedroom within the State Capital Territory was as high as N300, 000 per annum, including agency and lawyer fees.

A one room self-contained within the same location rents for between N180, 000 and N250, 000 per annum, including agency and lawyer fees.

One room located in a public compound with shared convenience costs between N100, 000 and N150, 000 per annum, including agency and lawyer fees.

A corps member, Miss Odichi Joseph described the high cost of rent in the state capital and adjoining communities as `alarming’.

Joseph said that four to five corps members usually combined to rent an accommodation between N250, 000 and N300, 000 in some obscure locations.

She said that such areas were usually far-flung from their places of primary assignments.

The corps member said that it had become necessary for the state government to regulate the cost of renting a house in some areas in the state.

She said that some house owners, agents, and lawyers were creating hardship for tenants.

Joseph said that the hardship they were subjected to in terms of the cost of living in Enugu was a far cry from the N19, 800 monthly allowance they receive.

Also, another corps member, Miss Jenifer Ugah appealed to the state government to intervene by impressing it on house owners to review downward their house rents.

Ugah said that the Federal Government should also make it mandatory for every corps employer to take charge of their accommodation issues.

“Most corps employers do not even pay monthly allowances apart from the one the Federal Government is paying,” she said.

She said that the involvement of lawyers and agents in house hire without regulation had become worrisome in Enugu as some lawyers helped in influencing the cost.

Also, Miss Busayo Arowosegbe, said that most of the houses had no potable water in spite of the high costs at which they were given on rent.

Arowosegbe said that she and few of her friends paid N130, 000 for a small room with no potable water.

“You need to see the ‘cubicle’ that we are forced to rent at N130, 000 per annum,” she said.

She appealed to the state government to provide affordable lodges where corps members serving in the state capital could reside in their service year.

NAN reports that the high cost of house rent in Enugu and its environ has generated a big discourse in the social space as Enugu now rates as one of the most expensive cities in the country.

NYSC boss promises drastic reduction in cases of abscondment from service

Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says efforts are on to achieve drastic reduction in cases of evasion and abscondment from service, especially by foreign-trained Nigerian graduates.

Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, the Director, Press and Public Relations of the scheme, made this known in a statement on Tuesday Abuja.

Adeyemi stated that the NYSC boss made the remark while addressing NYSC Legal officers’ Workshop with the theme “NYSC: Call to Service’’.

He said that the scheme was determined to continue to sensitise Nigerians on its enabling laws  to avail them better understanding of the obligations of the scheme to avoid infractions.

Ibrahim charged NYSC legal officers to educate other members of staff and the public on both the NYSC Act and the Scheme’s bye laws as it would also assist them in successful handling of litigation matters.

He said “I charge you to brace up for the onerous demands of your schedule. l expect you to be abreast with developments in your profession, especially through self-development efforts.

“At the same time, we expect consolidation of the achievements of the Corps Legal Aid Scheme through the provision of more effective guidance for Corps Lawyers.”

Ibrahim said that the recent national sensitisation workshop on the NYSC Act in Abuja revealed that many Nigerians were unaware of the provisions of the Act.

He noted that over the years, achievements of corps lawyers included; handling of litigations in courts on behalf of indigent accused persons and payment of court fines for some prison inmates.

Others, he said, were visits to correctional centres, orphanages and old people’s homes, career talk and guidance for secondary school students .

The NYSC boss commended the efforts of the legal officers and other stakeholders who had been instrumental to the achievements recorded so far.

He said ” I also want to appeal to partners and public-spirited Nigerians to support corps members toward sustaining their good works, especially in rendering assistance to the less-privileged in the society.

“I enjoin both the legal officers and corps lawyers not to rest on their oars, especially with regards to enlightenment of the citizenry on their rights and responsibilities under the law.”

NYSC Director of Legal Services, Mr Ibrahim Tijjani, said that the workshop was aimed at bringing together, NYSC Legal officers to brainstorm on the scheme’s Act, CAP. N84, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

NYSC medical team treats 500 rural dwellers in Nasarawa State

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), says it has so far treated about 500 rural dwellers in Nasarawa State of various ailments through its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme.

Hajia Ramatu Sanda, Nasarawa State Coordinator of NYSC, stated this on Monday during the inauguration of 2020 HIRD Outreach in Gudi community, Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

Sanda said that the initiative was conceived years ago to address the health challenges of Nigerians, especially at the grassroots.

She expressed optimism that HIRD, which she said had gained acceptance among rural communities across the country, would sue for further collaboration with more organisations to enhance its activities.

“We want to acknowledge the support we enjoy from our various partners. It is our hope that this initiative will endure and be sustained for the benefit of all,” she said.

The state coordinator expressed gratitude to the host community for its massive support for the health initiative.

She disclosed that the 500 rural dwellers had also been offered counseling.

“I am grateful to members of the community for opening their doors for us and availing themselves for consultation, diagnosis, treatment and possible referral.

“Our goal is to see that the impact of this effort is fully felt in rural areas across the state,” she said.

She assured that other communities would also benefit from the programme, and appealed to the state government for more support to sustain the initiative.

In her remarks, Mr Josephine Tende, NYSC Zonal Inspector in charge of Akwanga LGA, said the community was selected due to the inability of residents to access health service in urban areas because of proximity.

“Also, when we brought the proposal here, the traditional council and the people happily received and encouraged us to come; and when we sourced for drugs, the pharmacies around here complied and gave us what they had,” she said.

In an interview with newsmen, Mr Aniako Chibuzor, Head of NYSC Medical Team and a Medical Radiographer, said apart from the language barrier, the initiative went smoothly.

Chibuzor said so far, more than 500 residents of the community had received treatment for various medical conditions such as Hypertension, Malaria, Typhoid, Ulcer, Sugar levels and Hepatitis, among others.

A beneficiary of HIRD and a resident of Gudi, Mr Husseini Shuaib,, expressed gratitude to God and the NYSC for the health care services to the community.

Shuaib expressed the hope that the initiative would be sustained and be replicated in other communities across the state.
