Ikeja NSE offers scholarships to students, tasks FG on engineering curriculum

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ikeja Branch, has offered scholarships to four secondary school students who had demonstrated engineering skills and showed interest in studying engineering in the university.

The Branch Chairman, Mrs Olufunmilade Akingbagbohun, made this known to the Nigeria News Agency at the presentation of a cheque of N150, 000 to one of the beneficiaries of the branch’s Engr. Kayode Adekoya Scholarship on Friday.

NAN reports that the branch presented the cheque to Mr Baki Sadiq, a 300 Level Student of Automobile Engineering at the University of Benin, Benin City, who had been on the branch’s scholarship from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Akingbagbohun, who noted that there had been a wide gap between classroom teaching and engineering industry, urged the government to review school curriculum in engineering for the nation to reap the gains of engineering.

According to her, Sadiq emerged the winner of the Project Skill Competition in 2016/2017 session in Lagos and was offered scholarship, having shown interest in automobile engineering.

“The motive of this scholarship is to encourage younger ones that are interested in studying engineering.

“Sadiq, while in secondary school, was able to design a toy vehicle on his own and we were impressed with this.

“After being examined by a panel of judges and showed interest in studying engineering, we encouraged him, paid for the UTME, helped him to get admission and put him on yearly scholarship.

“Engineering is the bedrock of any nation that wants to develop and if we don’t bring up the younger ones that will take over from us, we are going to run into chaos and the country also,” the chairman said.

According to her, young students who have displayed high skills in engineering should be encouraged to give hope to the country in a world driven by engineering technologies.

Akingbagbohun said that the future of the country lied on young students who could show dexterities in engineering technologies “to do something for Nigeria and make a change in Nigeria”.

On how the society identified talents in engineering, the chairman said that the branch wrote to schools for students to design what they could do in engineering, saying the best were placed on scholarships.

“We had somebody last year that came up with a washing machine that actually worked and they are all from public schools and we want to encourage them.

“One of the children designed a traffic light and the parents could not even pay his JAMB form and nobody could do that, the branch took it up. Those are the things we want to be encouraging.

“We want to be encouraging intellectual knowledge and innovations. We want to encourage them to study engineering and become problems solvers in Nigeria.

“Kayode Adekoya Scholarship has been on for about four years and we have had four beneficiaries,” she added.

According to Akingbaghohun, one of the beneficiaries is at Bells University, another at the Ekiti State University and the last at Lagos State University.

On how the government could help develop engineering, she said: “Government should make schools better and review the school curriculum for engineers in Nigeria.

“By the time we do this, the huge gap between the classroom and the industry will reduce. The gap is enormous and we need to reduce it.

“We need to graduate better engineers that can think out of the box, produce things that will help the economy not only engineering on paper.”

The chairman said that the branch was committed to mentoring of graduate members, walking in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and groom young graduates on practical experience.

In his remarks, Adekoya, who commended the branch for naming the scholarship after him because of his sacrifice for the society, tasked young engineers on innovations.

Adekoya, who noted that he was elated having a scholarship inaugurated in his name in his lifetime, urged beneficiaries to face their studies and not let the society down in providing solutions to engineering challenges in the country.

Speaking, Mr Mike Joseph, the Step Father to the beneficiary, who described the scholarship as laudable, said his entire family would forever remain grateful to the Ikeja Branch of NSE.

Joseph, a printer, who could not hide his joy, said that the scholarship had made the family proud of the NSE and the boy.

In his comment, Sadiq commended the branch for offering him a scholarship of N150,000 annually.

Sadiq, a former student of Keke Senior High School, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, said that the scholarship had not only footed his tuition but also helped him acquire various engineering skills like programming, artificial intelligence among others.

The student, who said that with the right environment and funding, Nigeria could reap much in engineering, noted that he had met a lot of talented young engineers on campus who could change the country.

“We have people that can really make Nigeria giant of Africa in engineering. All we need is good environment and funding and let the curriculum change also,” Sadiq said.

New Allowances: NYSC Members pay ‘Thank You’ visit to President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday received members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, who were in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on a ‘thank-you’ mission over their new allowances. The Nigeria News Agency reports that the four members representing others countrywide came to convey their “deepest gratitude” to the president over the recent increase in their monthly allowances from N19,800 to N33,000. The NYSC members were led to the State House by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare and the Director General of the scheme, Brigadier General Ibrahim Shehu. Speaking at the event, President Buhari described the NYSC scheme as a ”laudable one that needs to be sustained as it affords the opportunity for Nigerian youths to understand the country better”. He said: “People come from far and wide; some from Victoria Island in Lagos have not even been to Ikeja. ”They now find themselves in Daura and other parts of the country. Whenever I go to my town, I get in touch with members; some of them from Lagos, some from Port Harcourt.” President Buhari, who praised General Yakubu Gowon for the initiative, said: “Whenever I meet General Gowon up till today, I thank him for initiating the NYSC. ”It is a nationalist and patriotic thinking that led to the development of the scheme.” Earlier, the NYSC members had showered praises on the president, saying ”the implementation in January, when we least expected it brought tears of joy to us as we had doubts of the promises earlier made. “You have demonstrated that you are a loving and caring father committed to the welfare of his children.” They also reiterated their commitment to do their best during their period in the scheme. “The increase is a wake-up call to us to show more commitment to the affairs of our fatherland. ”We are great stakeholders in our collective determination of building a prosperous and united Nigeria, the future belongs to us,” they said. Use increased allowance to secure your future, NYSC Coordinator urges corps members

Mrs Grace Akpabio, Ondo State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has advised corps members to use part of their new allowance to acquire entrepreneurial skills for a better future.

Akpabio made the call when she appeared on a live radio programme tagged ‘Guest of the Week’ packaged by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Positive 102.5 FM, on Thursday in Akure.

She called on the corps members to set aside part of the allowance to pay for instructional materials and other Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training expenses.

“Let me use the opportunity provided by this live programme to encourage all my corps members serving in Ondo State and other states of the federation to use part of the enhanced allowance to pursue SAED post-camp training to secure their future.

“In times past, corps members were always complaining that the allowance of N19,800 was hardly enough for them to cope with their monthly expenses.

“But with this increment to N33, 000, they should not eat their future; rather, they should be prudent in their spending and plough back part of the new minimum wage to secure their future.

“It is no longer news that majority of Nigerians are struggling to make a living but you can deny yourself a luxurious life today to have a better tomorrow,” Akpabio said.

She said that the Federal Government, through the NYSC, had prepared corps members for abundant life during and after their service year with the introduction of Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

The state coordinator said that over 1.4 million participants had been trained since the programme was introduced in March 2012.

“I am a foundation staff of SAED programme when it was introduced.

“I am speaking from an informed angle that if the corps members can vigorously pursue any of the approved skills or vocation, becoming self- reliant and independent after their service year will be a foregone conclusion,” Akpabio said.

The state coordinator thanked the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare and the NYSC Director-General, Brig.- Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, for ensuring that the corps members received a befitting new year gift from the Federal Government through the increment.

She also thanked Gov. Okuwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State for the massive infrastructural development at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Ikare-Akoko in the last three years.

“Since the advent of the present government in the state, seven out of the 15 structures in the camp had been renovated, while the perimeter fence had also been constructed to ward off intruders,” she said.

Akpabio called on the people of the state and philanthropists in the society to partner with the scheme.

“I want to appeal to Nigerians, especially the people of Ondo State and philanthropists-cum-businessmen and women to partner with us to develop one of the oldest NYSC orientation camps in the country.

“Your efforts will not go unrewarded, as we promise to name such project you may give to us after you,” she said.

Okowa inaugurates 700 capacity hostel, other projects at Delta NYSC Camp

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, on Thursday assured management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of the state government’s continued support to the scheme.

Okowa gave the assurance, while inaugurating a 700-capacity hostel for corps members at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku. The project was executed by the state government.

The governor said that the camp was in a poor state when he visited in 2018.

He expressed delight that the camp had begun to wear a look befitting where corps members would spend time before being deployed for primary assignment.

“This is a dream come true, and we thank God that we are witnessing this great transformation of the orientation camp.

“I believe we should improve on the facilities that we have in this orientation camp as we are collaborating with the Federal Government in different ways.

“These partnerships are in the best interest of our people and in the best interest of our state and here in Issele-Uku, the first port of call for corps members posted to Delta.

“The graduates, numbering thousands who are posted to Delta, will work in Delta, and will impact on the state and its people.

“So, it is only human that we make them comfortable to bring out their best to serve the state and our nation.

“I appreciate the work of the contractors that worked here to see that these projects are completed for inauguration today.

“It is my hope and expectations that when we leave in 2023, this NYSC Camp will be a changed environment that will be comfortable for corps members.

“It gladdens my heart that we are here to inaugurate a 700-capacity bed space hostel for corps members; four blocks of twin 3-bedroom flats and several other projects.

“In the next couple of weeks, construction work will commence on the internal roads, a multi-purpose hall and we shall also, construct a hostel to be named after Chief (Sir) B.S.C. Elue, former Deputy Governor in Delta,” Okowa said.

Earlier, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director-General of NYSC, thanked Gov. Okowa for his numerous contributions to the growth of the scheme.

“Gov. Okowa has to his credit, the approval and actualisation of many projects in the Camp, among which are comprehensive renovation of existing buildings and building of 700 capacity hostel.

“Building of eight 3-bedroom flats for camp officials, sinking of about 700 feet industrial borehole to address perennial shortage of water.

“Others are linkage of camp to urban water scheme, release of 300 KVA electricity transformer with industrial prepaid metre, brand new camp clinic, among others,” Ibrahim, represented by Mr Steve Ehoda-Adi, said.

Commenting, Folorunso Omotade, South-South Area Coordinator of NYSC, said, “for records, no administration since the inception of our dear state in October 1991, has made this level of huge investment and commitment to this Camp and to the NYSC in Delta.”

We will not post corps members to employers without accommodation – Ondo NYSC Coordinator

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it will no longer post corps members to places of primary assignment without accommodation or stipends in lieu of same.

The Ondo State Coordinator of  the NYSC, Mrs Grace Akpabio, said this when she paid a courtesy visit on Oba Batuga Akintoye, the  Jegun of Idepe in Okitipupa Local Government area on Wednesday.

Akpabio was at the palace to express her displeasure over the attack on some corps members at their residence in Okitipupa.

She sad, “Henceforth, any corps employers or local government councils without well secured accommodation will be blacklisted.

“Your royal highness, it is callous and wicked on the part of some good -for -nothing individuals to inflict pains and psychological trauma on corps members.

“They left their respective families and loved ones to come over to Ondo State to serve their fatherland only to be rewarded with such inhuman treatment.

“Kabiyesi, some corps members in order to deliver effective service delivery to the host community rented a building.

” The building was broken into by miscreants in the society who dispossessed them of their valuables at gun point and went ahead to molest them.

“I am here on the order of the Director-General of the  NYSC, Brig.- Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, to inform the Kabiyesi and all the corps employers in Okitipupa Local Government that  the NYSC management has resolved to post corps members to only places where their security are guaranteed with good accommodation.

“It is most unfortunate that when the incident occurred, the NYSC Local Government Inspector informed the Local Government Council of the dastardly act.

“But up till this present time of my visit to assess the situation, the local government authorities have not deemed it fit to sympathise with the affected corps members.

“These are our children and the onus lies on us to provide conducive accommodation for them and at the same time ensure that their lives are adequately protected,” she lamented.

The Jegun of Idepe, Oba Batuga Akintoye, expressed shock over the incident and appealed to the state coordinator to allow him take over the matter with the stakeholders and security agencies within the council area.

The monarch, on behalf of the indigenes and settlers of the town, promised that appropriate steps would be taken to forestall a recurrence.

The traditional ruler seized the opportunity provided by the visit to call on corps members to report to the palace or security agencies in the town any suspicious movement or activity within their environment.

At the Divisional Police Headquarters in the town, the State Coordinator,  passionately appealed to the Police to intensify surveillance and routine inspection of corps members lodges across the local government.

Akpabio, who was visibly shaken, called on all stakeholders, especially, the security agencies to do everything within the ambit of the law to fish out the hoodlums who perpetrated the heinous crime against humanity.

At the Nigerian Christian Corpers Fellowship Family House where the ugly incident occurred, the State Coordinator thanked God that no life was lost during the attack.

Akpabio admonished the corps members to see what happened to them as a test of their faith and encouraged them not to look back or waiver in their service both to God and mankind.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday.

According to the corps members, some of the items stolen are phones, laptops, clothes and other personal belongings.

2 NYSC members set to marry in Kano says official

Two serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Kano State, Mohammed Alhaji-Musa and Hauwa Yahaya-Bagudu are set to get married on Friday at the Nigerian Air force base Juma’at Mosque.

The NYSC Coordinator in Kano, Malam Ladan Baba, told the Nigeria News Agency, on Wednesday,

that the 2019 Batch ‘A’ corps members informed  him of their intension shortly after the orientation course.

According to the NYSC Coordinator, when the corps members from Nasarawa and Niger States met him on the issue, he advised them to meet their parents, discuss and seek their consent.

“I told them that when they meet with their families and agreed, that is when they should inform the NYSC management so that we can be part of it.

“Since then, I did not hear from them again, until after about six months when they brought an invitation letter to me for their wedding and we are very happy.

“They narrated to me how their parents were involved in the issue and accepted the union, that is when we engaged seriously to ensure the success of the marriage,” he said.

Baba explained that the union, which is the first for couple from different states in Kano NYSC, would portray the purpose for the establishment  of the scheme geared towards  ensuring unity among Nigerians.

Narrating how they started the relationship, Alhaji-Musa said, “we met in camp during our platoon activities, especially the day we met during our platoon duty in the kitchen”.

Alhaji-Musa, a native of Afo from Nasarawa State, said he was overwhelmed with the warmth hospitality he received from Hauwa’s family when he visited to declare his intention.

“I was initially attracted by her way of life, kindness and respect for people, which I noticed during our stay in camp, and I fell in love with her.

“It is a wonderful experience because in the first place, my intention was to serve in Abuja, but when my posting came out I was posted to Kano, which I accepted in good fate not knowing that this is what will happen,”he said.

On her part, Hauwa, a Nupe from Niger State, said she accepted Alhaji-Musa  because of his gentle and nice disposition during their three weeks stay at the orientation camp.

According to her, she initially did not wanted to have her one year mandatory national service in Kano, saying “Alhamdulillah, ‘thanks be to God” as she found a husband.

JSS 2 student did not impregnate any corps member in C/River-NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Cross Rivers has described as untrue the social media publication stating that a JSS 2 student impregnated a serving corps member in the state.

In a statement signed by Mr Abdullahi Yuguda, Head, Press and Public Relations Unit of NYSC in the state, the scheme described the report as `fake and untrue.’

“The attention of the NYSC in Cross River has been drawn to a malicious publication making the rounds in the social media, alleging that a female corps member was impregnated by a teenage boy (student) in the state.

“To put the records straight, there is nothing as such in Cross River as claimed by the unknown writer. It is only meant to malign the reputation and integrity of the scheme and the public perception of our corps members.

“NYSC is a reputable organisation that is very proud of her Corps Members because of their high level of discipline and responsibility and therefore cannot be involved in such a shameful act.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the authorities of NYSC at Local, Zonal and State levels never received any report of such formally or informally

“The said news is the handiwork of fake news hawkers who derive joy in seeking attention or traffic to their websites, at the expense of protecting journalistic code of ethics”, the statement said.

The statement stated that the originators of the news failed to state the source of the news rather was dwelling on imaginary school, JSS 2 student and Corps Member.

“Worthy of note is the fact that, NYSC has a laid down procedure for approaching matters on Corps Discipline and Reward. But as at the time of fielding this rejoinder, no Corps Member in Cross River is connected with such negative act.

“It will interest the general public to note, that one of the focus of NYSC Orientation programme is that of instilling high sense of discipline and reinforcement of strict moral standards and conduct which subsequently guide their operational behaviour at their various places of primary assignment and their host communities of service.

“While calling on the general public to dismiss and disregard such jaundice report, Management of the Scheme in Cross River advises the authors and originators of such callow write up to retract same”, the statement added.

The statement adviced the originators of the report to desist from manufacturing fake news with the intention of tarnishing the image of the scheme, rather, they should pay attention to the numerous selfless services rendered to Cross River communities by corp members serving in the state.

Jubilation as corps members receive N33,000 minimum wage

Some corps members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Enugu State have expressed joy over the payment of N33,000 new monthly minimum wage by the Federal Government.

The corps members, who have been expectant, expressed their happiness while speaking to the Nigeria News Agency in Enugu on Friday.

Some of the corps members said it was a shock when they started receiving the credit alert at about 2:00a.m on Friday.

The respondents, who spoke to NAN, expressed their joy over the payment, noting that the payment was a New Year package from the federal government.

One of the corps members, Mr. Joseph Odichi said it was like a dream when he got a call at about 3:00am from a fellow corps member about the payment.

“We are really grateful for this administration especially President Muhammadu Buhari for fulfilling its promise especially at this crucial stage of the year. In fact, this is another Good Friday for us.

“We also thank the Director General of the NYSC, Brig Gen. Ibrahim Shuaibu, for making it possible after confirming the implementation few weeks ago,” he said.

The corps members also pleaded with the DG for the payment of the arrears, noting that it would go a long way in helping most especially the Batch A corps members that would be passing out in less than two months.

Another corps member, Miss Arowosegbe Busayo said she still could not believe it but thanked the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for the kind gesture.

“We have been expecting to receive this N33,000 since April last year but we thank God that finally it has been paid.

“Most of us could not sleep after the breaking news at about 2 am even though some banks are yet to pay,” she said.

Miss Divine Umoh, also a corps member, said that it was too good to be true when she heard the news in the early hours of Friday.

“Government has failed us in the past with their promises but this issue of minimum wage has changed my perception.

“We pray that things will get better in 2020 because people are really suffering and we urge the federal government to look into our arrears payment,” she said.

Another corps member, Tosin Omoloyin jokingly asked for extension of his service by six months.
