NYCN 5-storey secretariat building ready in 18 months – Adodo

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has said that its permanent national secretariat would be ready in 18 months .

National President of NYCN, Mr Solomon Adodo, said this in Abuja on Friday at the inauguration of its national office, a rented apartment located near the popular Area 1 Shopping Complex.

Adodo said the council decided to occupy a rented apartment for now to have a place of convergence where issues concerning youth development would be deliberated upon pending the completion of its national secretariat.

He said the building, a five-storey structure to be known as the “Nigeria Youth House”, when completed, would be a multipurpose edifice with modern facilities.

“This development was achieved because of the peace we now have among our members; the NYCN is now a one united body with no more faction and this youth house is a testament to that.

“We have never had a structure like this since the history of the national youth council of Nigeria; this is just the beginning of great things to come.

“We will soon invite you to the formal commissioning of the Nigeria youth house owned by the National Youth Council of Nigeria.

“The prototype design is there and it will be completed in 18 months; it is a five-storey building and with a lot of facilities.

“We are going to trigger flashpoint of development everywhere in the nation.

“We will begin a step at a time and concentrate on the six geopolitical zones, and God willing, before the end of our tenure, we must have gone if not the whole 36 states, at least half the number,” Adodo said.

According to Adodo, the unveiling of the NYCN office on June 12, is deliberate to highlight the importance of the youth in the development of the nation.

He said that June 12, was symbolic as it reminded Nigerian youth of the need to join hands and struggle for the liberation of the country in spite of the “storm and despair”.

“Today is a symbolic day in the life of our country because we are all aware that the election adjudged to be the fairest and freest in the history of our nation held on June 12, 1993, never saw the light of the day.

“All hope is not lost in the midst of storm and despair; we can put ourselves together, assemble our potential and channel them into productivity.

“NYCN has always maintained that Nigerian youth have energies, and where we channel our energies determines the outcome.
“We cannot channel our energies to destructive purposes like terrorism, armed robbery, kidnapping, cyber crimes and so on.

“We hope to assist the government at all levels in driving Nigeria to the frontline of development in the comity of nations.

“This will ensure rapid economic growth by bringing the potential of our youth to assist the president and state governors build a new Nigeria,” Adodo added.

Lockdown: NYCN lauds FCT water board over stable water supply

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has commended the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Water Board, for ensuring stable water supply in Abuja throughout the lockdown, occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chairman of NYCN, FCT Council, Mr Ango Suleiman, made the commendation at a news conference, on Saturday in Abuja.

Suleiman, who urged the water board to sustain its efforts, enjoined other essential service providers to emulate the board in providing basic services to the people at this critical time.

He said that though workers of the board were categorised as essential service providers, they were not getting the deserved attention and recognition by the public.

He also applauded the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, and Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu, for their unwavering support to the water board and other agencies in the territory.

According to him, the FCT is blessed with two proactive ministers, noting that while Bello is coordinating to ensure stable services in the territory, Aliyu is ensuring the smooth running of the area councils by providing palliatives to  vulnerable residents of the territory.

Similarly, Suleiman appreciated the Abuja Electricity Development Company (AEDC), for the improved power supply during the lockdown and encouraged the company to step up efforts in provision of effective services.

NYCN says Buratai’s relocation to N/East will bring victory in insurgency fight

National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) says war against Boko Haram has recorded tremendous boost following relocation of  Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, to the Northeast.

President of NYCN, Mr Solomon Adodo, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, said Nigerian youths received with ecstatic jubilation, the news of the massacre of 105 guerrilla fighters of the dreaded Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist group.

It would be recalled that Buratai on Sunday, visited and hailed the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole for their gallantry in an encounter that led to the killing of the terrorists at Buni Gari in Yobe state on Saturday.

The visit was a follow-up to the successes recorded by the troops in neutralising many of the terrorists that attempted to attack Buni Gari Village in Gujba Local Government Area.

Adodo, however, said the relocation of Buratai to the northeast was all the soldiers needed to neutralise the remnants of Boko Haram fighters.

“It should be recalled that we expressed commendation for the chief of army staff on his relocation to take direct command and control of the theater of war in the northeast.

“Our confidence was further strengthened and with the strategic move, the end is in sight for the terrorist group.

“This lethal blow is definitely one in the series of sequential defeats Boko Haram will suffer till they are totally obliterated.

“We herein salute the courage and sacrifices of the troops of the Nigerian army and urge them not to relent as our fervent prayers and total support is with them,” Adodo said.

He however called on Nigerians to desist from denigrating and casting aspersions on the Nigerian army and on the pristine image of the Nigerian military.

The NYCN boss noted that the Nigerian military needed all the support from Nigerians to prosecute the war on terrorism to the finish successfully.

“The successes being recorded by the military further gives credence that President Muhammadu Buhari relied on the best security/military intelligence in extending the tenure of the current Service Chiefs.

“The NYCN therefore uses this medium to pass a resounding Vote of Confidence on the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces – President  Buhari and the entirety of the Military Chiefs.

“The end of Boko Haram is here and with the fine experience of the current crop of Military Chiefs, total victory is closer than hitherto anticipated,” Adodo added.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for full-scale investigations into the fire outbreaks that affected parts of the Accountant-General of the Federation’s office and the headquarters of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Abuja.

The NYCN, in a statement signed on Thursday by its President, Mr Solomon Adodo, said the incidents were regrettable, especially at a time the country was battling with the novel Coronavirus pandemic threatening human existence.

Adodo sympathised with the Federal Government over the unfortunate incidents, but noted that thorough investigations were needed to unravel the causes of the fire outbreaks.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that fire recently broke out at the Treasury House, the building housing the AGF’s office in Abuja.

NAN also reports that exactly one week after, another fire outbreak was reported at the headquarters of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), a situation that made many to be suspicious of the coincidence.

However, the NYCN urged Nigerians to be calm and give government the benefit of unraveling the causes of the incidents, even though the AGF had assured that the inferno did not destroy any record.

“We urge the government to do a full-scale investigation, using the right professionals and security agencies to determine exactly what led to the fire incidences.

“If it is a case of sabotage, those guilty should be made to bear the consequences of their dastardly acts, as the fire that gutted particularly the AGF’s office had raised concern in many quarters.

“Some have alleged that funds donated for management of COVID-19 pandemic had been diverted and that the building was set ablaze to destroy documents and records of the social intervention transactions during this period.

“Thankfully, the AGF has come out clearly to say that all the financial documents are intact,” the statement quoted Adodo as saying.

He urged the Federal Government to remain committed to addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19 and ensure that all donations made towards the containment of the pandemic were judiciously and transparently applied.

“We hereby call on the Federal Government to ensure judicious and transparent utilisation of all the donations.

“We also urge government to ensure that the social intervention efforts get to the citizens who truly deserve assistance, particularly the youth, who have been deprived of eking out a living owing to the lockdown,” the statement added. (NAN)

Alleged rape, assault: NAWOJ urges fast, unbiased probe of Kogi commissioner

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called on the Kogi State Government to ensure accelerated and unbiased investigation of the alleged act of assault and rape committed by the state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr Abdumumuni Danga.

The reports that the association made the call in a statement signed by its National President, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole, on Monday in Abuja.

The Nigeria News Agency recalls that in a video, which had gone viral on social media recently, a beauty queen, Elizabeth Oyeniyi, alleged that Danga abducted, assaulted and forcefully had sex with her over a Facebook post.

According to the victim, she had earlier appealed to the commissioner to assist his family member, who is also a friend of the victim, on her Facebook wall in the wake of the COVID-19  pandemic  lockdown.

Oyeniyi however explained that the commissioner got enraged with the post and ordered some boys to pick her and his sister from Okene to Lokoja where the commissioner personally flogged them and raped her.

She further alleged that her phone was smashed and the  commissioner intimidated her to recant her Facebook claims through  a make-believe video in which she apologised and spoke nicely of  him.

Although, the state governor has reportedly suspended the commissioner and ordered an investigation into the matter, human rights organisations, Civil Society Groups, including the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), have all called for justice.

However, NAWOJ in its statement, urged Gov. Yahaya Bello to ensure that objective and unbiased  investigation is carried out promptly on the allegation and the accused  adequately punished, if found guilty.

“While the media is awash with false information that the commissioner had been suspended, NAWOJ reliably learnt that the commissioner was yet to be suspended and no punishment had been meted out to him.

“Although a probe has been initiated by the state governor, Yahaya Bello, NAWOJ wishes to urge the panel and the governor to fastrack the probe and not unduly delay it.

“It is worthy of note that many days after this allegation, the said commissioner is yet to deny the allegation against him, pointing to the fact that he may be guilty as alleged.

“NAWOJ also notes that although the victim has already indicated interest to seek legal redress, the onus still lies on the state government, if it is not complicit, to take a decisive action against the erring commissioner.

“Gov. Yahaya Bello must take a clear stance to be against violence and assault on women by taking a decisive action against the commissioner, an action that would serve as a deterrent to others with similar traits,” the statement read in part.

The association therefore called on the state governor to ensure that the accused is made to step-down as a public office holder in the   investigation period so that he does not intimidate the victim or her family.

It added that other women groups and lawyers will be rallied to ensure that Oyeniyi gets justice.

“We can no longer have people in authority who should be custodians of the law breaking same laws with impunity and yet attempting to hold onto supposedly honorable positions,” it stated.

COVID-19: Include minister of youth and sports in PTF, NYCN urges FG

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on the Federal government to  include the Minister of Youthand Sports Development

, Mr Sunday Dare in the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 to ensure coordinated outreach in terms of awareness and welfare.

President of NYCN, Mr Solomon Adodo, made the appeal in a statement he issued in Abuja on Sunday.

Adodo said: “the Nigerian youths are already dying slowly under the biting pangs of hunger and this must be stopped through proper concerted efforts.

“There should be an immediate and direct release of relief materials and funds to all the 37 State Chapter Chairmen of the National Youth Council of Nigeria for onward distribution to the Nigerian youths.

“Nigerian youths should be fully and properly integrated into the activities of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 for faster and efficient results.

“It is importance that we alert the President that the Nigerian youths are the hardest hit by the stay at home directive which triggered a tactical shutdown of the economy.

“These youths were never captured amongst the poorest of the poor on account of the fact that they had means of eking a living for themselves howbeit on a subsistence day-to-day basis.

“This is no longer feasible and their lives are now in dire danger; this pressed situation might throw up unforeseen vicissitudes of grave implications if nothing is done to avert same,” Adodo said.

The NYCN president who commended the government for the proactive measures initiated to contain the spread of the dreaded disease, called on the  youths to remain law abiding and shun all forms of crimes as government looks into their demands.

    He

also applauded government’s initiative to reach out to poor households amongst other worthy emergency measures to ease the adverse effects of the pandemic on the country.

“We call on all Nigerian youths to cooperate with the government at all levels and comply with constituted authority in our collective national interest.

“Government deserves our support now more than ever if we must win this war against COVID-19.”

National Youth Council demands arrest of impostors

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on security agencies to arrest anybody or persons parading as adopted leaders of the Council.

National Secretary of NYCN, Suleiman Musa in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday said the call was made following a meeting of factional members of the Council in Port Harcourt, Rivers, where they adopted a President.

Musa described the meeting as illegal following a December 2019 High Court ruling in Nasarawa state, presided over by Justice Haruna Offo, that declared all the congresses that produced then existing factions null and void.

Musa described the alleged adoption as a hatchet job of some individuals who had seen the umbrella body of all Nigerian youth as a platform to promote their selfish aims at the detriment of the army of Nigerian youth.

“Nigerian youth desire visionary leadership that will drive them towards self-actualisation and national development.

“A High Court in Nasarawa state in suite no: 104/2018 declared the Gombe, Port Harcourt, Abuja and any other elective congress conducted in the name of the 1st defendant illegal.

“They were convoked contrary to valid and subsisting orders of the court dated the 9th day of July, 2018 and the 16th day of July, 2018 and during the pendency of this suit were conducted in error.

“Following the pronouncement of the Court which was never appealed, all factions seized to exist in the NYCN and as such anyone congregating under the guise of faction is nothing but an impostor.

“Such person or persons should be immediately arrested and prosecuted by the appropriate security agencies,” Musa said in the statement.

The statement further quoted Musa as saying that the NYCN had only one leadership headed by its President, Mr Solomon Adodo.

He called on the youth to disregard those parading themselves as being factional leaders of the NYCN saying they were anti-youth and counter progressive elements.

“Adodo is working assiduously with his team to the admiration of all well-meaning youth in the country to give them a sense of belonging.

“We hereby urge the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development to discountenance the lawless individuals parading themselves as factional leaders of the NYCN.”

Musa reiterated the resolve of the NYCN to support the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration towards the implementation of its developmental agenda for the country.

He also assured that the NYCN would consistently play its role in tackling all existing and emerging national challenges.

FUOYE, unique institution in Nigeria – NYCN

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), on Friday, described the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) as a unique brand among its counterparts in Nigeria.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the Vice President of the council, Mr Olamide Odumosu, made the declaration in the office of the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Kayode Soremekun, in Oye-Ekiti.

Odumosu, who led seven other executives, including two from the Ekiti State chapter of the council, appreciated the vice chancellor for his various achievements in the university.

“FUOYE is a unique brand that will excite the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, because this university is one of the fastest growing institutions in the country.

“I want to really appreciate you formally. We have come to see what you are doing, having heard a lot about your activities from our branch executives in Ekiti.

“What I see today is exactly what the president wants from all public office holders.

“We want to commend you and appreciate your tireless efforts in mounting several academic programmes in this university within a short period.

“It shows that the youth recognise value and that means they are people of value too. Only the deep can call to the deep.

“However, I thank God for the marvelous work He has done at FUOYE,” he said.
