Why I pushed for direct primaries – Gbajabiamila

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has explained why he pushed for direct primaries as the only method through which political parties should elect candidates to stand for elections.

The Speaker said direct primaries would bring more accountability and adequate representation as political office holders would not be restricted to pleasing a group of few people selected as delegates, but would work for the interest of the generality of their party members, and by extension the electorate.

Besides, Mr Gbajabiamila said he observed that many Nigerians, especially the youths, want to participate fully in the election of those that would represent them, right from the grassroots level, hence his resolve to champion direct primaries.

The Speaker, while hosting a delegation of the Nigerian youths on a thank-you visit for his role on direct primaries led by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, said he preferred a situation where the political space is opened for all, including the youths, to participate fully.

This is even as Nigerian youths thanked the Speaker for single-handedly moving for the amendment in the Electoral Act to have direct primaries as the only method of electing parties’ candidates.

Mr Gbajabiamila said some members of the political class may not be comfortable with the arrangement, but that the majority of the masses are in support of direct primaries, which he said would give them the opportunity of deciding who would represent them.

Advancing some of the reasons, Mr Gbajabiamila said: “If I know that my return will depend on some few men, I may care about you. But if I know that my return will depend on my accountability and representation to the people, I will do the right thing.

“It is important for this generation to open the door of leadership to the next generation. We must allow every Nigerian to participate fully in the process of leadership. I, therefore, stand with Direct Primary.”

“That’s why I said at different fora that I’m for direct primaries. We have to do this for the sake of the institution.

“When you gather yourselves (as youths), chances are that you’ll win. Democracy is a government of the people. Democracy is not just a general election. It starts from the primaries.”

The Speaker, therefore, challenged the Nigerian youths to “take advantage of the new amendment,” saying “power is not served a la carte.

“I’ll ask that you carry that advocacy out there because it’s for you.”

He noted that the youths are part of the reasons why lawmakers exist, saying, “The youths are the greatest asset of any nation, not just in Nigeria.”

He said the Nigerian youths are thriving in different spheres of life, but that when it comes to politics, they do not show much interest.

“Since the Not Too Young to Run became law, you’ve not taken advantage of that. The Act appears to be a paper tiger. The enabling environment to work for that Act isn’t capitalized on.”

The Speaker also said the fact that the President Muhammadu Buhari led government provides adequate funding for the youths showed that it recognized that the youths are the future of the country.

He thanked the minister for leading the youths delegation to thank him for the role he played in ensuring the inclusion of direct primaries as the only method of electing political parties’ candidates for elections.

Earlier, the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Dare, said the visit was to thank the Speaker for moving the amendment for direct primaries, which he said would accommodate the Nigerian youth in the political space.

Mr Dare, who led a delegation of about 20 youths, said: “I want to thank the Hon. Members and the House for the support they’ve been giving us for the past two years of our stewardship. I want to also thank you for your support for the youth of our country.

“Between 65% and 70% of our population are less than 25 years. So, we can’t ignore the youth. I want to plead on behalf of the Nigerian youth that you continue to support youth development. You should also expand the frontiers of youths inclusivity.

“When the president signed the Not Too Young to Run Bill, it paved the way for many youths.

“Another door was opened two nights ago. The kudos goes to you and the National Assembly. We support you for direct primaries. It will open the door for Nigerian youths. They will stand in a position to have more say in the political space.

“As a journalist, and it has been recorded, I know that you moved the amendment of the Electoral Act that has led us to where we are (on direct primaries). I want to urge you to continue to work for the people and champion for the people. I urge you not to relent.

“We believe that the House of Representatives is a true representation of the Nigerian youth,” Dare said, adding that the delegation comprised representatives from the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), the Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP), among others.

“We’ve enjoyed tremendous support from Mr. President in our ministry. I want to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for leading this country to the right path. The Nigerian youths are committed to democracy.”

Also, one of the youths’ representatives, Patience N. Eze, who is the spokesperson of NYCN, thanked the Speaker for working for the Nigerian youths in different ways, including on the issue of the direct primaries.

She said: “I want to thank the Speaker for what you’re doing for the youths. We appreciate you for pushing for direct primaries, which we believe will give an opportunity to the youths.

“I assure you that we’ll take the opportunity with the support of people like you. We also appeal that monies should be channelled towards youths development.”

Emir, Sen. Adamu back conversion of FMC Keffi to teaching hospital

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

The Emir of Keffi, Dr Shehu Yamusa III has declared his support for the proposed conversation from the Federal Medical Center in Keffi (FMC) to the Federal University Hospital.

The emir made his position known when a presidential committee on the establishment of a federal teaching hospital in Nasarawa state visited his palace on Thursday in the local government of Keffi.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the committee under the leadership of Dr Adebimpe Adebiyi, Head of the Department of Hospital Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, was able to carry out an on-site assessment of the FMC keffi and the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital.

recalls that the Minister of Health, Dr Osage Ehanire, recently disclosed the federal government's plan to transform the CMF Keffi into a teaching hospital.

The emir told the committee that Keffi, strategically located in the center of the country, deserves to house the university hospital because it is the most peaceful local government in north-central Nigeria.

The traditional chief also said that the FMC Keffi has the equipment, manpower and facilities that will ensure a successful start-up of the proposed university hospital.

The emir, however, urged the committee to conduct its investigation thoroughly and discharge the responsibility entrusted to it with diligence and fairness.

He thanked the federal government headed by President Muhammadu Buhari for its tireless efforts to improve the delivery of health care in the country.

For his part, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, representing the West Nasarawa Senate District (APC), said the proposed conversation from CMF Keffi was a good step in the right direction.

Adamu, a former executive governor of Nasarawa for two terms, said CMF Keffi's conversation at the university hospital would be less economical for the federal government because it had invested heavily in the facility.

However, Parliament instructed the committee to do its job effectively and to defend the interests of the federal government.

Adamu, who holds the traditional title of Turakin Keffi, said: "As law-abiding citizens, we will accept and welcome the government's decision on the matter."

In addition, Alhaji Muhammad Idris, chairman of the Keffi section of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), said that FMC Keffi has facilities that would facilitate the clinical training of medical students in accordance with international standards.

Earlier, the head of the committee, Dr Adebiyi, explained that the committee had been mandated by the presidency to carry out an on-site assessment visit to the FMC Keffi and Dalhatu Araf specialist hospital in Lafia.

She assured that the members of the committee would respect its mandate to justify the confidence that the federal government places in them.

Group seeks immediate recall of Lagos lawmaker

    Recall

Lagos, Nov. 1, 2020 A group, Amuwo Odofin Stakeholders Consultative Forum (AOSCF), has called for immediate recall of the lawmaker representing the constituency in Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos, the group demanded the recall of Mrs Mojisola Alli-Macaulay over alleged “gross mis-representation” of her constituency at the assembly.

The statement was jointly signed by Mr Kingsley Nwanze, Convener, Amuwo Odofin Intelligentsia, and Mr Gbenga Akinbinu, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Amuwo Odofin Chapter.

It said that Alli-Macaulay made unguided statements which were inciting and callously targeted at Nigerian youths during plenary sss

The group, therefore, vowed to commence legal proceedings for the recall of Alli-Macaulay over her comments alleging that most Nigerian youths on social media are always high on drugs.

Alli-Macaulay, in a video of her address at an Oct. 26 plenary of the House on the looting and violence that trailed the #EndSARS protests, had said, “We need to begin to orientate our young people. They are high on drugs all the time, most of them.”

The group said: “It is on record that Amuwo Odofin youths protected all business premises within the local government and they were highly commended by well-meaning Nigerians, including the council chairman.

“We would like to state emphatically, that we are not in support of destruction of property by hoodlums.

“It is unfortunate that our representative at the LSHA did not have a good grasp of the positive contributions of Amuwo Odofin youths during the crisis that ravaged other parts of Lagos State.”

The group listed six reasons as grounds for the commencement of legal proceedings to recall Alli-Macaulay from the assembly.

“She does not have functional constituency office as required by law within the constituency for almost two years in office.

“She has not prepared any bill aimed at improving the lives of her constituents and by extension, Lagos State.

“Her continuous representation is totally against the well-being of her constituents.

“It was widely circulated on major social media platforms that she used COVID-19 palliative items as gifts at her last birthday party.

“She has refused to give her account of stewardship at the Lagos State House of Assembly since she assumed office.

“She has also religiously remained inaccessible since she assumed office.”

The lawmaker and her aides did not respond to calls and text messages seeking her reaction to the allegations as at the time of filing this report.

EndSARS Protests:  Beauty Queens partner media, security agencies on campaign against violence

Eight Beauty Queens under the auspices of ‘Messengers of Peace’(MOP)  say they are willing to partner media organisations and law enforcement agencies  in  the  campaign against violence amid the “#EndSARS protests’’ across the country.

They made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Beauty Queens were unveiled earlier this year as ‘Queens of Peace’ to champion the crusade for national peace and unity by the Messengers of Peace, an NGO that advocates peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

According to the queens, the gesture is in line with the NGO’s vision of promoting the culture of peace by organising local and international volunteering projects.

They said that they have reached out to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and relevant law enforcement agencies in the collective fight against violence.

Miss Vivian Kaima, reigning ‘Queen of Peace, Nigeria’, said: “We have visited and handed letters expressing our concerns over the current situation of the country to the DSS, the Nigerian Police and others.

“The leaders of MOP and the Queens of Peace are willing to serve as mediators to the youths and government, and will come up with holistic resolution to calm every aggrieved mind.

“The attempt by some unscrupulous elements to give the recent #EndSARS protests an ethnic and religious coloration is condemnable.

This is not fair, as a peaceful protest which was gladly carried out by peaceful demonstrators, and which the government had already taken note of its demands, was hijacked by criminal elements.

“We the Messengers of Peace condemn in totality all those vandalising government and private buildings and properties.

“Government at all levels are in social contract with the citizens to give them dividends of  good  leadership, and this can only be realised when there is peace,’’ she said.

Also, Miss Katherine Kalu, who wears the crown of the ‘Queen of Peace, International’, called on Nigeria in the Diaspora, especially those that share contents on social media, to avoid inciting utterances.

She, however, urged that Nigerian citizens abroad should make useful contributions that will help in salvaging the current situation.

“The Queen of Peace International shall be the coordinator of all correspondence from Nigerians in the diaspora to relate same to relevant government offices responsible for such issues.

“We promise not to let the youth down because whatever affects one affect all,” she said.

Miss Felicia Owor-Agbor, ‘Queen of Peace, North Central’, said : “We kindly request that you reach out to our Zonal Queens of Peace in Nigeria to relate any important message in writing only.

“Such messages and opinions shall be transmitted to the Queen of Peace Nigeria and shall be presented to all security structures and the Presidency after copying same to the National Assembly (NASS).

“We therefore call on all youths to please as a matter of urgency shun every trace of violence and return to their homes and wait for further directives from the government and the MOP.”

Other Queens of Peace who are part of the pact are: Miss Henrietta Musa representing the North-West, and Miss Angel Williams, representing the North- East.

Others are: Miss  Ogbuehi Christiana, Queen of Peace, South- East, Miss Aliyu Aisha Queen of Peace, South- West, and Miss Tenia Abraham, Queen of Peace,  South- South.

Earlier Dr Suleiman Adejoh, President of the MOP, told NAN that the  ‘Queens of Peace Nigeria’ was a collection of Beauty Queens who volunteered to spread the message of peace.

He said the group was set to honour Nigerians who had contributed in various ways to national peace building at the 2020 National Peace Awards scheduled to hold on Nov. 12 in Abuja.

“The Queens of Peace are responsible for various peace related advocacy as their own little contribution to peaceful co-existence in our country.

“The main objective is to work for the promotion of peace within Nigeria and beyond, irrespective of tribe, gender or religion.’’

NYCN lauds Gov. Sule over distribution of COVID-19 palliatives in Nasarawa

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Nasarawa State chapter, has commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his transparency in the distribution of the COVID-19 palliatives given to the state by the Federal Government.

The state Chairman of NYCN, Malam Idris Ojoko, gave the commendation in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

Ojoko said that the pro-activeness of the governor had increased public confidence in his administration and enhanced good governance in the state.

He also commended Sule for displaying humanity, accountability and transparency in the governance of the state since assumption of office.

“It is unfortunate that in some parts of the country, the COVID-19 palliatives meant to cushion the effects of the pandemic were being withheld.

“We, however, remain grateful to our accountable and transparent governor for his proactive leadership.

“Sule received, supervised and ensured timely distribution of the palliatives from the Federal Government to the people of the state.

“This action has indeed averted possible crisis in Nasarawa State, as being experienced in some states across the state, which were said not to have distributed the palliatives,” Ojoko said.

He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the uplift and promotion of the development-oriented programmes of the governor and the activities of the youth in state.

The youth leader appealed to the youth in the state to continue to support the Sule-led administration for it to deliver more dividends of democracy.

#EndSARS: Youths council advises against threat to National security

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has advised protesting youth against targeting security formations, as such actions would be perceived as a threat to National Security.

Mr Solomon Adodo, President of NYCN, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, also advised Nigerians to guard against the protest being hijacked by unscrupulous elements.

NAN reports that the #ENDSARS protest started on Oct. 8 with protesters taking to the streets in different parts of the country, calling for a reform of the Police force and disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for alleged brutality on citizens.

Cue in Audio 1(President of NYCN, Adodo on National security)

“The National Youth Council of Nigeria wants to call on all the Nigerian youth that are still on the street, first and foremost, do not take your protests to security formations.

“Whether the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army or any other security formations; if you do so, it will be taken as a threat to National Security and it will be dealt with as such.

“We also want to urge Nigerians youth: do not be misled into anything that will cause a cataclysm of crisis in the country such as some people who are still proposing a revolution now.

“And then to add a violent twist and an uprising, this is not what we need in Nigeria, so we advise the Nigerian youth, do not be misled under any guise,“ he said.

    Cue out Audio 1

Adodo urged the aggrieved youths to suspend their protest and give the government an opportunity to dialogue and come up with strategies for meeting their demands now that SARS has been disbanded.

He recommended that teams be set up to follow through with the implementation of the outcome of the dialogue, noting that it is a life-long reformation.

NAN reports that the demands by #EndSARS protesters include: immediate release of all protesters; justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families.

Others are: setting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and report of police misconduct (within ten days); psychological evaluation and retraining of all disbanded SARS officers before they can be redeployed.

Cue in Audio 2 (Adodo on youth suspending protest)

“Now that SARS has ended, we want to call on all the Nigerian youth to pull out from the streets, let us dialogue and strategize; let us draw up our demands and let us set up a team that will be following this thing through.

“It is going to be a lifelong thing, to ensure that if there is any form of oppression, because this is not just about SARS, we are talking about the entire Nigerian police force, other security agencies also brutalize citizens.

“So we call on the youths, let our protest not be hijacked by renegade elements or any individuals who want to cause chaos, who want to cause crisis for our country, it will profit no one.

“Let us now pull out of the street and let us redraw a strategic engagement where the right of the Nigerian youth will be defended perpetually,” he said.
