The NHL's brightest stars are down in sunny Florida for the NHL All-Star Weekend with the main event, the All-Star Game itself on deck today.
Unlike leagues like the MLB, NFL and NBA, there is no singular game anymore in hockey. Instead, fans will be treated to three shortened games.

Starting in 2016, the league changed the format of the game to a 3-on-3, single-elimination tournament featuring four teams, one for each division. There are two semifinal games before the two winners meet in the All-Star Game Final.
It is the second time the NHL has played the All-Star Game in South Florida, as the Panthers previously hosted the event in 2003.

This is the start of something new for Vanessa Hudgens and Cole Tucker.
The High School Musical alum and the baseball player are engaged after more than two years of dating, multiple outlets report.
While the couple has yet to confirm the news, in recent days, Vanessa, 34, shared a loved up photo of the pair on Instagram and wrote, "I'll stop the world and melt with you."
And when the new year came, the two rang it in together—and then went Instagram official by Valentine's Day. "It's you, it's me, it's us," Vanessa captioned the Feb. 14 snapshot of the two kissing.
Finally, in April, the athlete gave fans a rare peek into their romance.
"I got a girlfriend and she's cool," the 26-year-old revealed to KDKA during spring training. "She's awesome, I love her. But I don't want it to be, 'Oh, Cole's dating Vanessa.' She's great. She'll be around. You will see her."
As for how their relationship came to be? Well...
"I fully just slid into his DMs and was like, 'Hey, it was nice to meet you,'" Vanessa revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show, noting they had been introduced on a Zoom meditation group. "So I think there is no shame in making the first move."

And during their two year relationship, the MLB player had returned the support, accompanying his leading lady to red carpet events.
Cole and Vanessa walked their first carpet at the premiere of Netflix's Tick Tick...BOOM!, which stars the actress, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Nov. 2021. Vanessa smiled for the camera while wrapping her arm around the 6′ 3″ outfielder.
And prior to her romance with Cole, Vanessa was in a nearly nine-year relationship with Austin Butler before calling it quits in 2020. A year after their split, the Spring Breakers star revealed that she use to see herself getting married at 25, but is grateful for how things panned out instead.
"That didn't happen," she told Shape. "But I'm in such an amazing, healthy relationship, so it doesn't matter. What I've discovered is that we all have these ideas—and if they don't happen, then there's a reason why. Learning that has been extremely helpful to my growth. I'm very grateful every day for where I am in this moment of my life."

Jazz Chisholm is Eurostepping his way into video game history.
The Miami Marlins outfielder became the first Bahamian-born athlete to grace the cover of a sports video game with the announcement of MLB The Show 23 on Monday. In his three years in the big leagues, Chisholm has become one of the flashiest players in the game, with a colorful range of hairstyles, eye-catching on-field fashion and a signature Eurostep celebration.
"I'm from literally a small country that's right outside the U.S., and you barely hear from athletes that come from there," Chisholm told ESPN. "For me, it feels like I can finally give back to other kids and it feels like I can make a difference."
In an injury-shortened 2022, Chisholm hit .254/.325/.535 with 14 homers, 12 stolen bases and 10 doubles in 60 games with 2.5 bWAR. While he remains a centerpiece for the Marlins' rebuild, Chisholm has made headlines in recent years for his outgoing social media presence and his celebrations on the field.
Chisholm said the inspiration for his signature celebration came from his high school days.
"I would always Eurostep around people in the hallways, even teachers, just Eurostepping past them, trying to mess with them," Chisholm said.
But after a conversation with teammates Lewis Brinson and Monte Harrison in spring training heading into 2021, Chisholm decided to bring the move onto the field. Chisholm told his teammates that he would start Eurostepping after his first home run, and after the celebration made waves on social media, a tradition was born.
"Everybody was like, you gotta keep doing it," Chisholm said. "You can't stop now."
Chisholm was most excited when he saw the celebration had gotten animated into MLB the Show.
"My little brother sent it to me when it was in the trailer and I was like, 'What?'" Chisholm said. "I watched it, and, bro, I was flipping out. I was like a little kid again."
While his desire for personal self-expression has rubbed some in baseball the wrong way, Chisholm said he's determined to remain himself regardless of the setting.
"You gotta know what that comes with, the noise," Chisholm said. "You're gonna get bashed, you're gonna go on Twitter or Instagram and see stuff. You're gonna have teammates that love it and that don't like it. You just gotta learn to cancel it out and realize you have to be yourself while also not overstepping yourself."
Chisholm said this was a learning process for him.
"I was way worse at 18," Chisholm said. "If I was 18 right now, it would've been crazy."
But being yourself can come with criticism. When Chisholm faces pushback from people in the game or the fans, he remembers the criticism Ken Griffey Jr. received for wearing a backward baseball cap.
"Once I'm doing what I have to do, it shouldn't be a problem," Chisholm said. "You try to be the person you watched growing up. Nobody will ever bash anybody for trying to be like Derek Jeter because he was so perfect, but if you find someone to be like Ken Griffey Jr., it's harder because he was The Kid. If you try to be like that, it could be too much for the world."
With self-expression on the rise in baseball -- from colorful cleats to chains to bat flips -- Chisholm hopes to continue the push for a more accepting game, pointing to Julio Rodriguez, Michael Harris, Shohei Ohtani, Marcus Stroman and Francisco Lindor among the players growing the game's culture. But there are more steps the game could take, according to Chisholm, such as allowing painted bats during games.
Although the game has come a long way, he sees more to be done.
"I just channel the culture I'm from," Chisholm said. "I'm from the Bahamas, I'm Black. So I'm trying to channel everything from basketball to the Negro Leagues. I've been studying my history. It gives me love. My name is already Jazz, so I gotta rep the culture."

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is the next face of MLB The Show.
The Marlins' electric young second baseman-turned-center fielder was announced as the cover athlete for MLB The Show 23 on Monday.
"It's something I always dreamed of from when I was a kid," Chisholm said in a special live stream on MLB's YouTube channel after the cover reveal. "I always wanted to be [on the cover of a video game], but I never thought it would become a reality as quick as it has."
MLB The Show 23 will be released on March 28 -- just before Opening Day on March 30. The game will be available for PlayStation 5, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
Chisholm is the latest of a wave of baseball's most exciting young stars to be on the cover of MLB The Show. That's been the theme for the last six editions of the game, following Ken Griffey Jr.'s appearance on the cover in 2017 after his election to the Hall of Fame.
Miami's 24-year-old All-Star will take over the MLB The Show cover from Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, who was MLB The Show's cover athlete in 2022. Other superstars to be featured on the cover of MLB The Show in recent seasons include Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper.

Preorders for MLB The Show 23 open on the PlayStation Store next Monday, Feb. 6. The standard edition of the game will be $59.99 for PlayStation 4 and $69.99 for PlayStation 5.
The Collector's Edition of the game will be unveiled on Thursday. New features for MLB The Show 23 will be announced closer to the game's launch.

A dominant season for the 49ers ended with a whimper Sunday, when San Francisco dropped the NFC championship game 31-7 to end what was an outstanding season.
The loss so one-sided partially because the 49ers lost the ability to throw the ball in the second half, after Brock Purdy was forced to return to the game with an injured arm when Josh Johnson was knocked out.
Purdy and the 49ers' passing offense was rendered inert, with the quarterback attempting just two passes upon his second-half return.
The initial injury came on the first series of the game, when Purdy's arm was hit by a charging Haason Reddick, forcing a fumble. Purdy seemingly told Shanahan he couldn't throw with the arm injury on the sideline, but the Niners' hand was forced when Johnson suffered his injury early in the second half.
Per NFL.com's Tom Pelissero, Purdy suffered a complete tear in his UCL, an MRI Monday showed.
According to Pelissero, Purdy will undergo surgery for the injury, but the hope is it will be a repair, rather than Tommy John surgery.
According to Adam Schefter, Purdy is looking to avoid surgery at all and is seeking second opinions.
A repair on Purdy's arm would give him a standard recovery of about six months, meaning if he got surgery on Tuesday, he would be ready to return right around July.
If the 49ers' initial hopes are incorrect and Purdy requires Tommy John surgery, he would likely be looking at about a full year of recovery, which would obviously sideline him for the 2022 season. Jake Delhomme got the surgery in October 2007 and he was back by September 2008, although that was after chronic arm pain.
In the baseball world, Bryce Harper had Tommy John surgery after the season in November and could be back by mid-May. Because a quarterback's strain is somewhere between an MLB pitcher and an MLB outfielder, erring toward the pitcher, it's difficult to say exactly how long he would miss with modern day rehabilitation, which is more conservative with pitchers and more aggressive with position players.
With that being said, if Purdy is able to avoid Tommy John surgery, that would be the best case scenario and he could be back in time to at least spend time with the team during the summer, which will be important in a crowded 49ers QB room.
In an interesting twist, Purdy's injury might mean a reunion between Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers.
It's often said if you have two starting quarterbacks you don't have a quarterback. Somehow, the 49ers have three of Schrödinger's QBs: They have three viable ones on the roster until March 15, but they won't know the status of any of them until later.
Trey Lance is expected to recover in time for a full return in the 2023 season from an ankle injury, but Garoppolo is the one whose return to 100 percent is the most surefire. And with the 49ers' QB issues this year, they'll want to carry at least two viable options next season.
With that in mind, don't be surprised if the 49ers re-up Garoppolo's tenure with the team after signing him to a surprising one-year, $7 million contract last offseason. The 49ers were 7-3 with him starting this year and he was a steady presence, something that is invaluable for a team with great coaching.
As for Purdy, second opinions will shed light his long-term status, but a full UCL tear is ominous, to say the least. Once there's confirmation of what "repairs" are necessary, it will be easier to prognosticate any kind of return for 2022's rookie sensation.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies continued to bolster their bullpen Saturday, acquiring two-time All-Star Gregory Soto from the Tigers in a five-player deal.
In addition to Soto, Philadelphia will receive infielder Kody Clemens in exchange for outfielder Matt Vierling, utility player Nick Maton and catcher Donny Sands (the Phillies' No. 21 prospect according to MLB Pipeline).
“We like the players we deliver. It was not easy for us; everyone contributed last year, particularly Vierling and Maton,” said president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. “But we felt an opportunity to add another back-end arm that we really like a lot, that we also have control over for at least three years, which was a deal that would help us improve going into the season. .”
The Phillies get: LHP Gregory Soto, INF Kody Clemens
Tigers get: UTIL Nick Maton, OF Matt Vierling, C Donny Sands (Phillies' No. 21 prospect)
Soto, who had a 3.28 ERA and racked up 30 saves for the Tigers last season, is one of the hardest-throwing lefties in the majors. His four-seam fastball averaged 98.7 mph last season, making it the second-fastest qualified pitch by any lefty, trailing only new teammate Jose Alvarado's sinker (99.6 mph).
Those two left-handed flamethrowers will share the bullpen with right-hander Seranthony Dominguez, who averaged 98.2 mph with his sinker and 97.6 mph with his four-seamer.
The move to acquire Soto also comes just two days after the club introduced veteran right-hander Craig Kimbrel, who ranks seventh all-time with 394 career saves. But before signing Kimbrel, the Phillies made sure he agreed with manager Rob Thomson's preferred approach of not having a set closer.
Although the Phillies didn't have that same luxury with Soto, since they couldn't reach him directly until the trade was official, they were able to get in touch with the lefty, who is currently pitching in the Dominican Republic, via WhatsApp shortly after complete the deal.
“He was delighted to join us. I think when people look at our baseball club now, and they look at the arms that we have, they're happy to contribute to the back end," Dombrowski said. "He's going to pitch significant innings in significant games."
Soto certainly adds to that group, although he tends to make things interesting. The 27-year-old, who will be controlled by the team through 2025, has averaged 5.3 walks per nine innings during his four-year career, including 5.1 last season. His strikeout rate also dropped from 29.6 percent in 2020 and 27.5 percent in 2021 to 22.8 percent in 2022. He also allowed an average exit velocity of 91.4 mph, the sixth-highest mark ever. of 358 qualified pitchers.
Still, Soto believes he will help a Phillies bullpen that, while intensified during the club's 2022 NL pennant race, had a 3.97 overall ERA last season. That ranked 18th in the majors, but it was a slight step up from 2021 (4.39 ERA, 19) and a drastic improvement from the disastrous 2020 season (5.14, 27).
The relief staff shone when Thomson first took over after the Phillies parted ways with Joe Girardi on June 3. At the time, Philadelphia's bullpen had a 4.10 ERA, which ranked 21st in the majors. From then until the end of July, the 'pen posted a 3.51 ERA, good for the eighth-best mark in MLB. As the team battled injuries down the stretch, relievers posted a 4.99 ERA in August and a 4.62 mark in September.
However, when the Phillies leaned more into their high-leverage arms in the postseason, the 'pen responded with a 2.62 ERA in 68 2/3 innings.
Although David Robertson (signed with Mets), Zach Eflin (Rays) and Brad Hand (free agent) are gone, the Phillies have replenished the group with Soto, Kimbrel, Matt Strahm and Erich Uelmen, who was acquired from the Cubs on Wednesday.
"When you have pitching depth, you can never have enough," Dombrowski said. “I talked to Rob Thomson a lot about it before we made the deal, the pros and cons, and again, even though he liked the players we traded, he thought having the ability to rest some of his tough pitching or back-end-types of type and still having other types of people who can do that the next day was very important to him.”
As for the other pieces in Soto's deal, Vierling, despite serving as the Phillies' starting center fielder for a stint last season, was relegated to platoon appearances against left-handed pitching after the trade deadline. changes from the acquisition of outfielder Brandon Marsh.
Maton, meanwhile, provided valuable innings in August and September as the Phillies dealt with key injuries down the stretch. One of the Tigers’ top trade candidates in Gregory Soto is on the move in a five-player trade Detroit swung with Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.
Tigers get: INF Nick Maton, OF Matt Vierling, C Donny Sands (Phillies' No. 21 prospect)
Phillies get: LHP Gregory Soto, UTIL Kody Clemens
The Tigers are filling several of their needs with this trade, at least on paper.

— Detroit Tigers January 7, 2023Maton, 25, is a left-handed bat who can play all over the field, with experience at second, at shortstop and in the outfield, and president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Maton feels comfortable at third base -- an area of need for the Tigers in 2023. Maton posted a 138 OPS+ in 34 games (85 plate appearances) in '22.
“Nick Maton is another versatile position player who has a history of controlling the zone,” Harris said. “He has already hit right-handed pitching in the big leagues. … When you watch Nick take ground balls, it’s [an] easy, fluid action. He has plenty of arm to make plays deep in the hole, which makes us feel like he’s going to be comfortable at third and everywhere else.”
Vierling is a speedy, right-handed outfield bat who profiles as a fourth outfielder. The 26-year-old had an 83 OPS+ across 117 games in '22, and he hit .295 against left-handed pitching last season, giving manager A.J. Hinch a platoon option. Harris also mentioned Vierling’s speed as an upgrade to the offense; his sprint speed (29.6 ft./sec.) ranks in the 97th percentile, per Statcast.
“That’s really hard to find,” Harris said. “… He has a track record of controlling the strike zone. He can play everywhere on the diamond, and he’s already performed at a high level in the big leagues. We also think that he brings some athleticism, versatility and speed that can really enhance our overall offensive unit in 2023.
“We also think the speed component may be of greater importance with the new rules, so it’s nice to add a little bit more speed to our offense.”
Both Maton and Vierling were young depth pieces that contributed to the Phillies’ postseason run, and both have upside that made them intriguing to Harris in his first offseason with Detroit. Time will tell if they can turn into productive players who can upgrade Detroit’s offense.
Sands is a catcher, a position the Tigers targeted this offseason as they try to build depth behind Eric Haase and Jake Rogers. Sands, who spent the entire season on the 40-man roster but only a brief stint in the Majors in September, is a bat-first catcher, posting an .841 OPS in Triple-A last season. The Tigers believe there is more in the bat and are “confident in his abilities behind the dish,” Harris said.
Soto was the Tigers’ closer and an All-Star last season, recording 30 saves and a 3.28 ERA across 60 1/3 innings. Armed with nasty stuff that is dominant when he is commanding the baseball, Soto is a hard-throwing lefty reliever who can strengthen the Phillies' bullpen as a late-inning reliever. Soto’s whiff rates declined last season, especially with his slider, and he was handed 11 losses. But opponents hit just .195 against his four-seamer, which regularly reaches triple digits.
Soto isn’t slated for free agency until after the 2025 season, which put a high price tag on him in the trade market.
The Tigers' bullpen will look different next season without Soto, Joe Jiménez (traded to the Braves), Wily Peralta and Andrew Chafin (both free agents), but Harris views Saturday’s trade as a “calculated risk” to upgrade the offense and plug positional holes.
“The bullpen was an area of strength for us, but we have to address the areas of weakness, too,” Harris said. “We’ve done a lot of work to add to our pitching and defense to try to stabilize this group, and we have to reshape the offense. We’ve been talking about it since the day I got here.
“You’re never entirely confident that young players are going to hit in the big leagues, but you’re a little more confident when you see flashes of them performing in the big leagues already. And with Nick and Matt, we’ve already seen that in the big leagues. With Donny, he’s performed at a really high level in Triple-A with the bat.”
Clemens, 26, is a utility player who spent most of his playing time at second base in 2022. He hit .145 with five homers in 117 MLB at-bats last season.

D. Ross Cameron/APLOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are cutting ties with pitcher Trevor Bauer, whose record-breaking 324-game suspension for sexual misconduct allegations was reduced two weeks ago, allowing him to resume his career with the start of the new season.
A person familiar with the situation said Friday that the 31-year-old right-hander has been designated for assignment, meaning the Dodgers have seven days to either work out an unlikely trade or simply release him. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the roster change.
If the 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner is released, Los Angeles would still be responsible for the more than $22.5 million remaining on Bauer's contract.
"After careful consideration, we have decided that he will no longer be a part of our organization," the Dodgers said in a statement posted on Twitter.
Bauer said in a statement: "After two weeks of discussions about my return to the organization, I sat down with Dodgers leadership in Arizona yesterday who told me they wanted me to come back and pitch for the team this year.
"While I'm disappointed in the organization's decision today, I appreciate the outpouring of support I've received from the Dodgers clubhouse. I wish the players the best and look forward to competing elsewhere."
The Dodgers had until Friday to restore Bauer to the roster under baseball rules and did not announce their decision until late afternoon. The team has rarely commented on the divisive case since Bauer was placed on paid administrative leave in July 2021.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred suspended Bauer for 324 games for violating the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy after a San Diego woman said he beat and sexually assaulted her in 2021. Bauer He has maintained that he did nothing wrong, saying that everything that happened between him and the woman was consented to.
Bauer was never charged with any crime.
The players' association filed a complaint on Bauer's behalf, and a three-person panel headed by independent arbitrator Martin Scheinman began hearing the case last May.
In a December 22 ruling, Scheinman upheld a 194-game suspension in lieu of Manfred's intended 324-game ban and reinstated Bauer immediately. Scheinman claimed Bauer violated MLB policy and deducted his pay from the first 50 games of 2023, covering part of the period the pitcher was on paid leave in 2021 and 2022.
"The Dodgers organization believes that allegations of sexual assault or domestic violence should be fully investigated, with due process for those accused," the team statement said.
The team said it fully cooperated with MLB's investigation and strictly followed the rules of the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy.
"Two exhaustive reviews of all available evidence in this case, one by Commissioner Manfred and one by a neutral arbitrator, concluded that Mr. Bauer's actions warranted the longest suspension of active players in our sport for violations of this policy." the Dodgers said. .
Bauer joined his hometown Dodgers ahead of the 2021 season on a three-year, $102 million contract. He had an 8-5 record with a 2.59 ERA in 17 games before he was suspended.
Should Bauer be released, the MLB players' association could challenge his release for failure to comply with the Uniform Player's Agreement.
The contract allows the team to terminate if the player "fails, refuses, or refuses to conform his personal conduct to the standards of good citizenship and good sportsmanship or maintain himself in first-class physical condition or obey the club's training rules." or "does not, in the opinion of the club's management, demonstrate sufficient skill or competitive ability to qualify for or continue as a member of the club's team."
In February 2022, Los Angeles prosecutors decided not to charge Bauer for allegedly beating and sexually assaulting the San Diego woman because they said they could not prove their allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
The woman, who was 27 at the time, said Bauer strangled her unconscious, repeatedly punched her and sexually assaulted her during two sexual encounters.
The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been victims of sexual assault.
Bauer said in a video posted to YouTube after the prosecutor's decision that he and the woman had rough sex at her suggestion and followed the guidelines they agreed to beforehand. Each encounter of hers ended with her spending the night at her Pasadena home, he said.
“The disturbing acts and behavior that she described simply did not occur,” he said at the time.
The woman had applied for a restraining order, but a judge denied it. The judge found that Bauer respected the woman's limits when she set them, and could not have known about the ones she violated because she did not express them clearly.
Bauer will lose about $37.6 million in salary for the last 144 games of last season and for the first 50 games of this season, through May 23.
If Bauer is released, another team could sign him for the major league minimum of $720,000, with the Dodgers responsible for the remainder of the $22,537,635 owed.
