First Bank demolish Mountain of Fire, wins Crown Elite Basketball Championship

First Bank Basketball Club of Lagos defeated their city rivals, Mountain of Fire Miracles (MFM), 44-27 to win the 2022 Crown Elite Basketball Championship in Lagos.

The team was made to work their socks off from the first quarter down until the last quarter of the game as MFM were no pushovers in the competition.

The arena, Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, was filled with fans cheering the teams as the final match lived up to expectations and to the delight of the organisers.

First Bank also got the N1.5 million prize money in the championship to cap their achievements in the outgoing season.

MFM hard work and brilliance was also rewarded with N1million prize money for the runners up while the third place winners, Bayelsa Strong, went home with N500,000. First Bank’s play maker, Murtanatu Musa, was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the competition.

Their Coach, Taiye Adeniyi, who praised the organisers, urged more passionate fans and corporate bodies to help in developing the sport in Nigeria.

She also said that the competition had brought the best out of the players, adding that many of the players discovered in the championship could make the national team.

”It was a great competition, I really appreciate the efforts of my girls for putting up a great performance to emerge champions.

”We met a great opposition in MFM; of course, we know what they can do and we were prepared and ready to work harder on the ball.

”What really gave us victory today is the fact that we were better organised and determined to win and I’m happy it came out that way,” Adeniyi said.

Similarly, Head Coach of MFM, Ochuko, said that she was happy with their performance but was also hoping they won in the finals.

”We had a brilliant approach to defend and do more on the offensive but unfortunately it did not come the way we expected.

”Sometimes it happens this way and we just have to go back to the drawing board and put up a better performance next time.

”We really say thank you to the organisers for all they have done and for making the competition a huge success.

Indeed it is a noteworthy experience.

”In a situation where we hardly see anything competition it feels good to have this event and most especially a very highly contested one where other teams also rose up to challenge for the title,” she said.

Meanwhile, Hanson Oguche, the President Crown Elite Basketball Championships, said that he was pleased with the success of the competition and was motivated to do more.

He said they wanted the edition, the third in the series, to be much bigger and had to invite teams from other parts of the country and from Africa.

”This year’s edition has been wonderful.

We factored the women in the competition for the first time.

”We also brought motivational speakers to relate with the players and inspire them on education and life after basketball.

We wanted to impact their lives through education and sports.

”’We were encouraged that they understand that learning a skill is very important as it can go all the way to attain much greater heights in life.

“We wanted them to understand that after basketball they can always fall back on something that can carry them for many years of their life.

”We look forward to many events like this as we had teams coming in from Togo and other parts of the country; in the future it is going to be an African International event,” Oguche said.

The Crown Elite Basketball Championships which dunked off on Aug. 21, was rounded off on Saturday with eight teams competing for the championship trophy and prize money.

The other teams that featured are, Kada Angels of Kaduna, Black Gold of Abia, Etoile Filante of Togo, University of Lagos Girls and Raptors Basketball Club of Lagos.

Four male teams – Mo Heats of Abuja, Lagos Legends, University of Lagos and Ebun Comets of Lagos – took part in the exhibition games.

Mustapha purchases 3000 tickets for Kwara Utd fans to beat MFM

The Kwara Central Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 polls, Malam Saliu Mustapha, has bought 3,000 tickets for soccer fans ahead of Sunday’s match.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the match is the last home game of Kwara United FC in the 20212022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) against MFM FC of Lagos.

Mustapha also pledged to pay a bonus to the Kwara United players should they emerge victorious in the match.

The purchase of tickets was contained in a notification letter sent to the Executive Chairman of Kwara State Sports Commission by the club’s Secretary, Hamidu Olowo.

“The Management Board of Kwara United Football Club wishes to inform you that Mall. Saliu Mustapha; had agreed to purchase Match Day Tickets for 3,000 Club Supporters.

“He will also pay winning bonus to our players for Kwara United FC last Home Match against MFM FC on Sunday 10 July, at the Main Bowl of the State Stadium Complex, Ilorin, in our Quest to Qualify for ‘CAF Continental Ticket,” he wrote.

Kwara United FC will lock horns with already relegated Lagos-based team in the Match Day 37 of the NPFL at the Kwara Stadium Complex, Ilorin.

The team is currently fourth on the league’s table with 55 points from 36 matches, and a strong prospect of picking one of the continental slots at the end of the last match against Heartland FC in Owerri next weekend.

Mustapha believed that having the stadium filled with fans will go a long way to motivate the players to victory.

It is also believed that the opportunity will drive more youths to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and ultimately participate in the 2023 general election.

The Club Chairman, Kumbi Titiloye, in the letter thanked Mustapha for identifying with the club, and also complementing the efforts of the state government on the team.

Titiloye also appreciated the Executive Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Mogaji, his Board members and other stakeholders for their support to the team.

Kwara United revive continental competition ticket chase by whipping Nasarawa United

Kwara United Football Club on Sunday at the Kwara State Stadium Complex in Ilorin defeated Nasarawa United FC of Lafia 3-0 in a 20212022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Match Day 36 fixture had fans returning to watch the home team in a while.

This was after a ban was placed on them by the League Management Company (LMC) for acts of violence by the home fans.

Jide Fatokun opened scoring for Kwara United in the 13th minute of the game, after he connected a well-taken corner-kick by Kabir Balogun.

Efforts to increase the tally in the first half proved abortive as Nasarawa United repulsed their several attacking moves.

Samad Kadir doubled the lead for the hosts in the 49th minute, after Junior Lokosa brilliantly assisted with a superb pass.

Lokosa completed the rout after scoring the third goal in the 67th minute.

Speaking at the post-match conference, Lookman Ijaiya, the coach of Kwara United, saluted his players for playing to instructions.

He noted that the team would improve its scoring efforts in the next two games, so as to wipe out the club’s goal deficit and be in good stead to compete with rivals.

Ijaiya expressed the hope that the ticket to play in the 20222023 CAF Confederation Cup competition could be obtained.

He urged the club’s supporters to rally round the team to achieve the dream, saying the fans’ return to the stadium had boosted the morale of his players.

His Nasarawa United counterpart, Bala Nikyu, on his part said the game was good and Kwara United were a better side by triumphing over his team.

Kwara United now have 55 points, and are placed fourth on the log after 36 games, and will take on MFM FC of Lagos on Sunday in Ilorin.

Late goals help 3SC as Rangers falter in continental competition ticket chase

Two late goals by Moses Omoduemuke ensured visiting Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan drew 2-2 with Rangers International of Enugu on Saturday in Awka.

The home draw meant the hosts failed to gain valuable ground on their 20212022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) rivals in the race for the competition’s third position.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Omoduemuke’s 73rd and 88th minutes goals cancelled out strikes by Shedrack Asiegbu and Chidiebere in the 46th and 55th minutes respectively.

The result meant Rangers stayed fourth on the log behind Remo Stars Football Club of Ikenne in third place, with each of them on 53 points.

This may mean that the 1977 African Cup Winners Cup champions may not be having a return next season to the competition now known as the CAF Confederation Cup.

Remo Stars are likely to build a gap when they host fifth-placed Enyimba International of Aba on Sunday, while Enyimba can even leapfrog Rangers if they win in Ikenne.

Sixth-placed Kwara United who host Nasarawa United of Lafia on Sunday in Ilorin can do same if they win.

Eighth-placed Akwa United of Uyo can move up if they beat hosts Wikki Tourists  on Sunday too.

Seventh-placed Sunshine Stars of Akure seem to be out of the reckoning for now, after a 0-1 loss to hosts Heartland Football Club of Owerri who are in the 18th place.

Abia Warriors of Umuahia did their campaign a lot of good with a 3-2 win over Gombe United, while Dakkada FC beat visiting Katsina FC 2-0 in Uyo.

Other Match Day 36 fixtures slated for Sunday will see title winners Rivers United of Port Harcourt hosting Kano Pillars, while MFM FC of Lagos will host Niger Tornadoes of Minna.

Second-placed Plateau United of Jos should have their hands full as they host relegation-threatened Lobi Stars of Makurdi.

But knowing a win will cement their position and the 20222023 CAF Champions League ticket, there may be no surprises.
