The HipCity Innovation Center or HipCity Hub, an NGO, has reaffirmed its commitment to address inequality in marginalized communities deprived of social services in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The organization's Executive Director, Mr. Bassey Bassey, made it known when he led a delegation to pay a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the Nigerian News Agency , Mr. Buki Ponle, on Thursday in Abuja.
He said the organization's mission was to reduce the incidence of inequality, especially in marginalized communities that were deprived of service provision.
Bassey said the organization was determined to educate and build capacity in underserved communities so they can understand their rights and demand accountability in service delivery.
He highlighted that beyond the city center, people were struggling to drink water from the same source as the animals, adding that "the water is not even clean for human consumption."
“But you find people drinking from that water. You will also find our women and girls struggling to maintain menstrual hygiene due to lack of clean water.
“Part of our strategy is to educate them; develop their capacity to be able to understand what their rights are and to work in collaboration with them and demand responsibilities around the provision of services.
“Having worked in Abuja for the last three years, we have come to realize that the original inhabitants of Abuja have gone down in the history books.
"We have seen that the decree that created the establishment of the FCT was not made in a very transparent way, it was a military decree, so there was little or no space for consultation," he added.
The chief executive said that for the last 30 years after the relocation of the nation's capital to Abuja, the original inhabitants had not been properly compensated.
Bassey emphasized that the organization's focus was on the dignity of life for FCT natives and ensuring they had basic social services such as education, health care, water and sanitation.
“And the sustainable use of the environment. So, through these four elements that we have mentioned, if any of them is missing, then it means that there is a violation of the fundamental human rights of this people.
“We are working with other organizations to promote the rights of the indigenous people of Abuja through the cultural, economic and political participation of this group of people.
“As you know, the Constitutional Amendment Committee has recommended the mayoral status of the FCT.
"This is part of what we're doing to make sure we reverse some of the alleged injustices done to the native people of Abuja," Bassey said.
He requested the support of for the achievement of these goals in terms of showing concern for disadvantaged communities.
In response, MD said he was always willing to collaborate with groups trying to make a difference in the lives of the nation's rural men and women.
Representative of , Mr. Silas Nwoha, pointed out that practically every community in the country needed such an initiative aimed at improving the lives of people, especially those who do not have a voice.
“So we assure you that he will always be by your side. We will always give you all the support we can.
“Let me also suggest that this is an initiative that we hope will be given a more national focus. I want to see you also give a voice to people in communities across the country.
"Communities that were not heard in Nigeria, because when you do that, it gives everyone a sense of belonging," he added.
HipCity Innovation Centre, popularly called HipCity Hub, is an organization focused on research and development, with a mandate to build community capacity and create a platform for citizen participation in the democratic process.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says it is ready to address all concerns raised about the implementation of the electronic scheduling system for trucks doing business at ports.
Its managing director, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko, affirmed this Tuesday in Lagos when reviewing the status of implementation of the policy, popularly known as the "ETO system", a year after its launch.
“We stand ready to effectively address all concerns raised; Having operated the novel electronic calling system for about a year, it should be hoped that some of the teething problems will go away.
“All persistent issues will require some time to resolve. The important thing is that we are committed to solving them,” she said.
While praising the effort and investments made by Transit Park (TTP) Ltd, operator of the calling system, the NPA helmsman said he recognized that change can sometimes be a painful process.
“In particular, managing the transition from a manual to an electronic call system for haul trucks can be difficult, so we have pleaded with the system operator to up their game, in light of the frustrations expressed by the system.”
According to him, the electronic call system, popularly called 'ETO', has revolutionized the delivery and evacuation of cargo in the port, hence the need to put everything necessary to sustain its positive in the country's port industry.
“We are well aware that about a year after its introduction some have yet to fully integrate their trucking business with the 'ETO' system, so we are in regular contact with the system operator and these issues will be ironed out very soon. . be released,” he said.
Bello-Koko further explained that the progress made so far had improved time per trip and increased the return on logistics investments for transport operators.
“You will remember that one of the first places I visited personally, while I was Acting Managing Director, was the Ijora operating headquarters of the electronic calling system.
“Following that visit, I also undertook a first-hand assessment of the critical infrastructure in relation to the 'ETO' delivery at the two ports in Lagos.”
The managing director acknowledged that traffic had not flowed freely from Mile 2 to the Tin-Can Island port.
“This is the obstacle that the electronic call faces in that axis. What we currently have along the Tin-Can Island Harbor Corridor would be cleared once the road reconstruction is complete.
“We are in constant contact with the Comptroller of Works in Lagos and the contractors, all in our attempt to ensure that the access road from Mile 2 becomes passable like the one from Ijora to Apapa,” he said.
He said the NPA had donated 24 new motorcycles to strengthen traffic monitoring and enforcement along the access roads to the Lagos Port Complex and Tin-Can Island Port.
According to him, “the NPA management does not stop paying attention to the problems that prevent the continuous flow of traffic in and out of the port; We are proud of our partnership with the Lagos State Government in this regard.
“We will continue to implement innovative measures to eliminate all levies that impede the smooth movement of commerce along the access roads to the port.
“Our determination as the NPA administration is to ensure that the objectives behind the introduction of the electronic call system are achieved. We will continue to collaborate with Messrs TTP Ltd, the Lagos State Government and other stakeholders including trucking companies.
“There is a noticeable improvement in the traffic situation along the port corridor, so we are calling on truckers to be patient with the electronic calling system, even as we work to achieve all the results.
“We know that an efficient call system requires excellent IT to manage the movement of trucks from the various parks to the seaports. We are working together with the operators to improve the situation.
“We hope that personal contact will be completely eliminated in the scheduling of trucks at the port.
“For this to happen, there must be an efficient IT infrastructure, high-tech access control, 24-hour power supply and electronically controlled monitors at the various truck parking lots and lobbies,” stated the NPA MD.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited began its week by assuring Nigerians that Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) distribution would soon return to normal after recalling the bad product imported into the country last week.
NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer (GED) Downstream, Adetunji Adeyemi, gave the assurance at a briefing in Abuja, as concerted efforts were made to end gasoline supply challenges.
Adeyemi stated that the company expected more than 2.3 billion liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the country in February and that more than 1 billion liters of the product were currently being distributed throughout the country.
He assured that the product that is being dispensed at several gas stations in the country is safe, since with the expected 2,300 million liters the sufficiency level would be restored above the national goal of 30 days.
Adeyemi explained that to speed up the distribution of PMS throughout the country, the company had started 24-hour operations at its warehouses and points of sale.
It revealed that the NNPC had formed a monitoring team, with the support of the Nigerian Downstream and Intermediate Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and other security agencies to ensure a smooth distribution of PMS throughout the country.
Meanwhile, House Petroleum (Downstream) Committee Chairman Rep. Abdullahi Gaya assured Nigerians that his committee would deal with companies importing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) blended with methanol into the country.
A statement Deen Muhammad, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC Limited, quoted Gaya as responding to a question from one of the committee members on the matter.
Gaya spoke during a meeting with the NNPC Directorate organized on the current fuel situation in the country.
While briefing the committee, NNPC CEO/GMD Malam Mele Kyari explained that the situation arose as a result of the discovery of methanol in PMS shipments shipped to Nigeria under the surviving commercial contract operated by their partners.
According to Kyari, the tests did not reveal the presence of methanol because the Nigerian specifications do not include methanol.
“We are a law-abiding company. There is no way we could know about the presence of methanol.
“The only way we could have known is if our suppliers, in good faith, disclosed it to us.
"In this particular case, the discovery was carried out by agents that noticed the emulsification in the service stations and they caught our attention.
"The subsequent investigation revealed that the four cargoes, all of the same source, also contained PMS mixed with methanol," Kyari said.
Mr. Garba Deen Muhammad, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC LimitedHe said NNPC moved quickly to track down all affected products and quarantine them.
While assuring the Committee and Nigerians that measures have been put in place to speed up fuel supply and distribution in the country, the NNPC CEO said the company had placed significant orders for more than 2.1 billion liters of methanol-free PMS to ensure queues disappear in a few. days.
He promised that the NNPC would cooperate with the committee and the Nigerian Downstream and Intermediate Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to get to the root of the matter.
The NNPC CEO also expressed deep empathy with Nigerians for the current situation and assured that adequate measures have been put in place to maintain supply sufficiency and prevent future occurrences.

For his part, Mr. Shehu Malami called on PHRC management and staff to ensure the successful completion of the rehabilitation project within budget, as it is in the interest of all PHRC staff, whether in-service or retired.
He commended PHRC for achieving ISO recertification and called on the management team to ensure proper processes and procedures are followed, especially in the course of rehabilitation.
port harcourt refineryIn his comments, Dr. Bafred Enjugu advised PHRC management to take advantage of the opportunity rehabilitation offers to develop skills and expertise in specific areas such as rotating equipment, electrical and mechanical engineering.
He noted that the subject matter experts that would be developed through exposure to rehab would serve as repositories of knowledge that can be used to provide solutions elsewhere and as resource people throughout the company.
In addition, he said that PHRC management should pay attention that the products of the rehabilitation project that would later be refined in the plants would have a quality and specification standard.
Previously, PHRC CEO Dikko described the visiting former CEOs as professionals who gave their best to NNPC and the country's refining sector, as they all worked at both Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) and at PHRC.

The Acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr. Matthew Pwajok, said the COVID-19 outbreak necessitated the idea of contingency planning at the agency.
Pwajok made the revelation while speaking at the Nigerian News Agency Forum on Sunday in Abuja.
He said that during the outbreak, the aviation industry was hit hard and NAMA was no exception as it suffered from a major revenue challenge being a self-funded agency.
“So if there's one thing we've learned to do, it's build a contingency, backup or recovery system or business continuity plan, where we'll be able to maintain services no matter what.
“We had some of these cases where we had to provide or relocate service delivery to a place like that.
“We also learned the need to build contingency funds, we are a government agency and you know TSA, all payments are in one account and it becomes difficult.
”Unlike when you have commercial banking, you can create an account where you can have dedicated funds in case of emergencies.
“In this case, we have learned the need to be able to build a financing system, where in the event of a situation like this that will affect income; we'll be able to have something to fall back on.
“The need to be able to build resilience both officially and in terms of equipment, in terms of personnel is very critical,” he said.
From left: NAMA MD, Mr. Mathew Pwajok, MD, Mr. Buki Ponle, Editor-in-Chief, Silas Nwoha at ForumPwajok said there have been cases where an entire watch of air traffic controllers had to be isolated because one person was infected and they all had to be isolated and then tested before rejoining.
The head of NAMA said that in that case, the agency had to find additional manpower to provide and maintain the services.
"So, over time, we've learned the need for backup, the need for resiliency, the need for contingency planning both on the official side, both on the material and equipment and personnel side."
He explained that during the COVID-19 outbreak, airports had to be completely closed, services were basically restricted to essential flights; security flight, medical or cargo flights and other types of special flights such as diplomatic flights.
The head of NAMA said: “Because of the air navigation services and air traffic services that NAMA provides, there was no time when the airspace was closed.
“This is because we continually had a couple of special flights that were going to evacuate people or ambulance flights that were coming to transport sick people or diplomatic flights or other flights that were flying over Nigerian airspace.
“So, in NAMA, it can never be completely closed because we have an obligation to the international community to open our airspace for other airlines or other citizens of other countries that will need to fly over our airspace to other countries.
“So we provide services on an ongoing basis even if there was a closure and we have learned the need to build resiliency.”
Pwajok said that during the period, some of the NAMA staff contracted coronavirus, and according to the protocols, the facilities had to be closed and decontaminated before reopening.
He said that the control tower, being a critical and sensitive facility, could not be closed and that four mobile control towers have been acquired and two more are expected to arrive in the country soon. (www.)
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc, Mr. Ademola Adebise, has advised accountants to store data safely and protect them against cybersecurity threats and other criminal breaches. Adebise said this on Tuesday at the 16th Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Western Accountants Conference themed ‘Digital Economy: Whither the Professional Accountant’ held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. The MD/CEO who stressed the importance of data storage and security said that accountants in the digital age must be flexible and knowledgeable to save data on storage devices on-premises or in the cloud. He also noted that in case of loss or data corruption, the 21st-century accountant needs to be conversant with the Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) to mitigate loss. Mr Adebise explained that “a large amount of data is sitting on storage. As accountants, we need to safeguard our storage and be versed in data recovery and business continuity planning should there be a loss or corruption of data. “The accountant must know contemporary issues on cybersecurity – ensuring that digital information is safe and secure, at all times. Going digital exposes you to risk from hackers. So, as an accountant, you need to have an in-depth knowledge of cybersecurity and must know the various data and information security standards to audit the environment.” Apart from being security conscious and storing data securely, the MD/CEO further noted that modern accountants should understand the changes taking place in the profession, including the evolution from traditional data collection methods. He said, “these include using Enterprise Resource Planning systems that are interconnected to process data from production, distribution, marketing, and sales. The accountant, therefore, needs to be skilled to understand the complexities, transaction flows of the new ways of doing things and understand what data is saying.” In Nigeria, the most popular forms of cybercrimes that accountants and other professionals in the financial services sector are susceptible to include fraudulent electronic mails, identity theft, hacking, cyber harassment, spamming and Automated Teller Machine spoofing. The biggest, however, is still fraud emails. The Nigeria Electronic Fraud Forum (NeFF) revealed that bank customers lost N3.6 billion to cyber-fraud in two years (2017 and 2018). Data released by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) also showed attempted fraud in 2018 alone was about N9 billion.
Partners for Petroleum and Energy Sector Prosperity Initiative (P-PESPI), an energy group, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint a substantive CEO (MD) for Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
P-PESPI said this in a statement, Mr. Charles Ibiang in Abuja on Thursday.
Ibiang also urged the president to consider Mr. Sule Abdulaziz, acting director general of TCN, as the substantive head of the organization.
"Confirming the appointment of Sule AbdulAziz as the substantive MD of TCN, a vital agency in Nigeria's electricity supply industry, is important at this critical time in the nation's development," he said.
Ibiang praised Buhari for inaugurating the TCN board, in accordance with existing laws, as well as diligent implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative; a well thought out policy plan to ensure adequate energy supply to Nigerians.
Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) logoHowever, he pleaded with the president to complete the circle of progressive reforms of the electricity sector, MD noun for TCN.
“P-PESPI, as a critical industry-focused observer, has witnessed mature coordination of critical stakeholders, notable milestones, continuation and completion of abandoned projects under the leadership of the current Interim MD.
“He is ably qualified for the position and his confirmation will put an end to past instability associated with high leadership turnover at TCN to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing projects and programs.
“Some of Abdulaziz's achievements based on our field monitors include the creation of the Kano region, bringing TCN's regional operations centers in the country to ten.
“TCN, under his leadership, is building more than thirty-two office complexes across the country, including regional and sub-regional offices and work centers to further improve operational efficiency.
“The new Port Harcourt regional office in Rivers has been completed and commissioned.
“P-PESPI wishes to point to all the important milestones in March 2021, when the industry recorded an all-time high generation of 5,801 megawatts that the TCN was able to successfully transmit,” he said.
This, he added, was the result of strategic management decisions under the leadership of Abdulaziz, with the guidance of the president, who ensured the completion of several abandoned projects, rapid maintenance, upgrading and repair of shattered transmission lines and facilities.
He expressed confidence that the President's Power Initiative in the broadcast value chain will receive a new boost in terms of investments with the confirmation of Abdulaziz as the substantive head of TCN.
Ibiang stated that the power sector was on the right track with the inauguration of its board and the appointment of a competent Minister of Energy, Abubakar Aliyu by Buhari.
Abdulaziz has been running TCN affairs in an interim capacity; a position he has held for nearly two years.
He was Regional Broadcast Manager for TCN's Abuja Region prior to his appointment as Interim CEO on May 19, 2020, following the dismissal of former CEO Mr. Mohammed Gur.
The Kogi government says that 10,000 young people would be trained in business development programs in the state.
Ms. Rekiya Onnaivo-Sanni, Director General (MD), Kogi Enterprise Development Agency (KEDA), said this at a forum with executive members of the GSM Association on Wednesday at her office in Lokoja.
Onnaivo-Sanni said the state will already be partnering with an organization for the training that will start soon.
She said that one of KEDA's mandates was to bridge the interface between state and federal government to ensure that citizens benefited in the area of microenterprise.
“Currently we have identified three key sectors, we are going to discuss with President Muhammadu Buhari about care facilities such as cassava, palm oil and ICT business.
“This explains why we are having this forum with the GSM Association on how to open a GSM village in Kogi, where you don't need to go to Lagos to deal with your phones, iPads, laptops and computers.
“As an agency, we evaluated the association's operations and found that they are well organized and committed to adding value to Kogi's economic development.
“We are involving them because in the planning stage we need to bring the already identified beneficiaries to a scientific approach in achieving results,” he said.
Earlier, the president of the GSM Association, Mr. Mohammed Idris, told the MD that they were at his office to communicate with her about the association and how to contribute their dues to the economic development of Kogi.
Idris said his biggest challenge was a GSM Village site with all the necessary facilities for his ICT business to flourish and help boost Kogi's economy.
He said that the association was well organized and had several committees that could control Internet fraud and criminal activities by members and the public, especially phone thieves.
According to him, the association believes that a partnership with KEDA will mean better opportunities and ease of doing business for its members and offer better service to the public who want it.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) received 15 new power transformers to increase the power supply in the country.
Ms. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs of TCN, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.
Mbah said the transformers comprised ten 60 MegaVolt Ampre (MVA) 132/33KV capacity transformers and five 150MVA 330/132KV capacity transformers.
The transformers, recovered from the Apapa ports, were delivered to TCN's central store in Ojo, Lagos state, for onward shipment to various TCN sites throughout the country.
Speaking about the delivery of the transformers, TCN Acting Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz said that the contract for the supply of the transformers, under the Nigerian Electricity Transmission Project (NETAP), was financed by the Bank .
He said that TCN would decide on the project sites where the transformers would be installed.
Abdulaziz said that once installed and connected to the grid, the ten 60MVA 132/3KkV power transformers and five 50MVA 330/132KV transformers would add 637 megawatts (MW) and 850MW respectively to the transmission grid.
“Consequently increase the total capacity of the transmission system by 1,487MW and guarantee reliability criteria N-1 in the substations, which is strategic to improve the stability of the network.”
Abdulaziz explained that in August 2021, the World Bank also financed transformer supply contracts that brought 10 60MVA132/33kV transformers and 25 grounding transformers.
Of the ten 60MVA transformers, five were installed in Karu and Gombe substations, while one was installed in Kano and Lagos states.
“This is the first time in TCN's history that it received a large number of transformers in a short period.
”These are historic achievements for TCN as it strives to implement its near-term development plan under the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Program (NEGMERP).
“The World Bank-sponsored NETAP project is one of TCN's donor-funded projects that aims to expand the transmission network while also prioritizing the maintenance of existing transmission infrastructures,” he said.
Abdulaziz added that TCN was also running several projects financed by Français de Développement (AFD), the French development agency.
He also said that the project processes, financed by the Development Bank (AfDB), were advancing very fast, so that TCN would soon sign contracts for 330KV and 132KV substations.
The MD said that the hiring of consultants for projects financed by the International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will soon begin.

Canon's embedded blue film technology printers come with all of these benefits, making these products a prerequisite for optimal healthcare. I am extremely grateful to Canon for supporting Reap Solutions from the very beginning, even in the initial test and trial phases, and say that together we will bring a positive wave of change throughout the medical fraternity.”
