Fifteen-year-old Nwaneri makes debut for Arsenal in easy win at Brentford

Fifteen-year-old Ethan Nwaneri on Sunday became the youngest player in English Premier League (EPL) history.

This was when he came on as a substitute for Arsenal as they returned to the top of the EPL with a comfortable 3-0 win at Brentford.

Goals from William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus gave Mikel Arteta’s side a 2-0 lead at the break before Fabio Vieira completed the win in the 54th minute.

Nwaneri, who is 15 years and 181 days old, came on as a substitute for Vieira in the second minute of stoppage time, the first player under 16 to play in the competition.

The previous youngest player to feature in the league was Harvey Elliott, now of Liverpool, who was 16 years and 38 days old when he made his top-flight debut for Fulham.

Arsenal had suffered their first defeat of the season in their last outing, at Manchester United, but never looked in danger, controlling the game from the outset.

Saliba got things underway, heading the visitors in front in the 17th minute, rising to angle a corner from Bukayo Saka in off the far post.

Another header, 11 minutes later, doubled Arsenal’s advantage with Granit Xhaka picking out Gabriel Jesus with a perfectly floated cross from the left which the Brazilian met powerfully.

The game was put beyond Brentford in the fourth minute after the break thanks to a wonderful strike from outside the box by Portuguese midfielder Vieira, which rattled in off the post.

“We have a different mentality this season.

We kept going and are training like we play and have class with the players that can make a difference,” said Arsenal midfielder Xhaka.

“More than happy we are in a good way but a long way to go,” he added.

Arsenal are on 18 points from the opening seven matches of the season, with defending champions Manchester City a point behind and North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur also on 17 points.

The defeat leaves Brentford in ninth place on nine points but manager Thomas Frank said they had lost to genuine title contenders.

“We lost 3-0, to the number one in the EPL.

I said before they are a top side.

“I think we performed quite well, not 10 out of 10 but if you want to win or get something out of a team (that are) flying, you cannot concede the first from a set piece and then the second one,” he said.

“We lost the game, I hate losing (but) they are top of the table so you cannot argue with that, they have done brilliant.

“Looking at the quality, they must be title contenders.

Early Grealish, Haaland goals ease Man City to win at 10-man Wolves

Jack Grealish scored inside the first minute and Erling Haaland netted his 11th Premier League goal of the season as Manchester City eased to a 3-0 victory over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday.

Phil Foden added a third in the second half as City moved to the top of the table with 17 points from seven games, while Wolves are in 16th place having won only once this season.

The home side were reduced to 10 men on 33 minutes after a horrendous challenge from defender Nathan Collins.

The defender launched himself studs-first into the midriff of Grealish and could have no complaints about the straight red card.

There was a minute’s silence ahead of kickoff following the death of Queen Elizabeth and the majority of fans kept a respectful silence.

While there was warm applause on 70 minutes from all around the ground to mark the number of years the monarch was on the throne.

The opening goal after 55 seconds was a first of the season for Grealish, who has come under criticism this week for his failure to both score and provide assists since his 100 million pound move from Aston Villa last year.

“It was nice to get off the mark this season and get the three points at a difficult place to come against a top team,” Grealish told BT Sport.

“This Wolves team is so underrated and they showed that in the second half, so it is a great result for us.

“I should be scoring goals and getting more assists.

I’m always going to have people talking about me with the amount I was bought for.

“But even at Aston Villa I did not score as much as I should have.

It is something I want to add to my game.

” The champions took the lead when Kevin De Bruyne’s inviting cross into the six-yard box was turned home by Grealish, before Haaland scored his 14th goal in all competitions with a scuffed shot from the edge of the box after Wolves defender Max Kilman stood off him.

The Norwegian striker became the first player in Premier League history to net in his first four away games, and the points were sealed when De Bruyne was again the architect with another low cross into the six-yard box which was turned home by Foden.

The win sees City unbeaten in their last 22 away Premier League games, a club record, and was achieved despite a lethargic second-half display in which they were not at their sizzling best.

How relatives framed Messi, Ronaldinho and other stars

Because of close agents, Kane missed the chance to go to Manchester City, Messi almost ended up in jail and so did Ronaldinho! This article is about exciting facts that happened in the families of the most popular sports stars of the time. If you follow the world of sports and betting, you should take a look at reviews written by Bookmaker Ratings, like Superbet Review. By the way, did you know that Ronaldinho and Anelka suffered because of brothers? It's natural when relatives become agents of deserving sportsmen. People tend to trust loved ones more, but blood ties are no guarantee of better conditions. Family members don't always cope best with the legal, financial, and commercial nuances of an elite football career. Moreover, in situations where an honest agent is doing his job and collecting a commission, the brother-in-law may make the wrong decision, go too far in negotiations, be seduced by momentary advantages and thereby damage the player's career. In the summer of 1999, Arsenal's young French goal-scorer Nicolas Anelka demanded a move to Real Madrid from the London management. Neither the persuasions of coach Arsene Wenger nor improved contract terms could change the player's mind. In his autobiography, Nicolas Anelka admitted that his older brothers insisted on the switch and unsettled the striker with stories about how great he was. As a result, Anelka moved to Madrid for a whopping €26 million at the time, but never played for Real Madrid. Relatives made good money from the deal and the striker became a nomad: He played for Liverpool, Chelsea and other big clubs, but never stayed anywhere for long. Ronaldinho suffered even more from his brother. Throughout his career, the Brazilian's agent was his brother Roberto. Contracts with Barça, Milan and other top brands brought in around €90 million and it seemed the idle life would go on forever. So far, in 2018, only €6 has remained in his accounts. Roberto's risky investments and Ronaldinho's complete indifference to his finances have led to this result. What can you talk about when a footballer at the age of 35 doesn't know how to withdraw money from a ATM. His brother's dark deeds plunged the legend to the bottom of the Paraguayan prison, whereupon he took his brother out of business.

Kane misses chance at City over brother, Oezil sacks agent father

The biggest danger in a player's association with a relative is that as the fee rises, the star's agents begin to put personal gain above that of the client. One of the Premier League club's officials told The Athletic a revealing story. "One day a relative of one of the club's players came into my office and gave a long monologue about the sacrifices he once made for his son's career and how he supported him at every stage of his education. And then he said, "It's time to get something back". He threw the footballer's father out of office and ended the negotiations. A similar approach is shown by the father of the famous Neymar. The father dreamed of a great career, but he didn't have enough talent, so he sees his son's rise as the realisation of his own dreams. He received €20 million just for his son's contract extension with the Parisians in 2021. The footballer's father has a brutal appetite, but it's not a fact that a parent cannot be overwhelmed by money, and then the striker himself can suffer. The most vivid example of this is Messi.

Another father in the role of agent

The touching story of Leo signing his first contract with Barcelona on a napkin is in stark contrast to the atmosphere in the courtroom in the footballer's tax evasion case. In 2017, Messi was found guilty on all charges by Spanish prosecutors. The footballer was given a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and a fine of €2 million. Leo's agent and father Jorge, who was used to finding simple solutions to complex problems, advised Leo to hide his earnings from the Spanish crown. Messi Sr's mediocre agent qualities are evident in his attempt to terminate his contract with Barcelona in 2020, but Jorge remembered to activate such an option 2.5 months after the due date. As a result, the Argentine smouldered for another season at the Camp Nou. These dramatic stories teach us that it's better not to mess with relatives. And what do you think?

Liberia’s Weah under pressure over ‘corrupt’ allies

Liberian President George Weah is facing a backlash over his handling of corruption accusations made by the United States against three of his close allies.

Washington imposed sanctions on top officials including Liberia’s chief prosecutor and Weah’s chief of staff earlier this month over corruption allegations tied to multi-million-dollar contracts and at least $1.

5 million in diverted public funds.

Weah — a former football star — suspended the officials, but the affair has continued to dominate headlines in the West African nation, threatening his support ahead of next year’s election.

Opposition leaders and human rights groups are demanding the officials’ dismissal — and a wider corruption probe into other members of the government.

Alexander Cummings, the leader of the opposition ANC party, said the “mere suspension” of the officials was “not good enough… nor is it enough to exonerate the president from growing public impression of his participation” in the “high crimes”.

“This is not the time for bogus suspensions, coverups, and fake investigations,” he said.

The Liberian NGO Regional Watch for Human Rights also urged Weah to sack the officials.

“This should not be business as usual.

Enough is enough,” the group said.

The former AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester City star, who has been criticised for lacking political experience and formal education, has not directly commented on the allegations.

“President Weah views the allegations against the officials contained in the report as grave,” his office said.

‘Pervasive’ corruptionFighting corruption was one of Weah’s major commitments before taking office in 2018.

In his inaugural speech as president, he promised to prosecute corrupt officials “to the full extent of the law”.

But he has struggled to fulfil his election promise.

Corruption remains endemic, with the watchdog Transparency International ranking Liberia 136th of 180 countries in its 2021 corruption perceptions index.

In a 2022 report, the US State Department cited widespread and “pervasive government corruption” in Liberia as a constraint to investment and development.

On August 15, the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control slapped sanctions on Nathaniel McGill, the Minister for Presidential Affairs who serves as chief of staff to the president, and two other senior officials.

It accused McGill of having “bribed business owners, received bribes from potential investors (and government office seekers), and accepted kickbacks for steering contracts to companies in which he has an interest”.

It said he misappropriated government assets “for his personal gain” and “organized warlords to threaten political rivals”.

Sayma Syrenius Cephus, Liberia’s solicitor general and chief prosecutor, is accused of having “developed close relationships with suspects of criminal investigations” and “received bribes from individuals in exchange for having their cases dropped”, including money laundering cases.

The head of the National Port Authority (NPA), Bill Twehway, “orchestrated the diversion” of $1.

5 million in vessel storage funds into a private account, according to the US.

It said he “secretly formed a private company” to which he “unilaterally awarded” a contract.

McGill and Cephus have responded with letters to President Weah, with McGill denying some accusations and decrying others as “vague”.

Cephus said he rejected and denied all accusations.

With long historical links and a significant diaspora in the US, American authorities have played an important role in holding Liberians accountable both for corruption and crimes tied to the country’s two civil wars.

Given the strong relationship, the US actions are likely to have a real impact in Liberia.

Upcoming election The corruption accusations come just over a year ahead of Liberia’s presidential election, slated for October 10, 2023.

Facing criticism over his inaction on key election promises, Weah blames the lack of progress on the difficult situation he inherited from his predecessors.

But Victor Bright, a political analyst, told AFP that until the sanctions were announced, the president had been “in good posture” compared to other potential candidates.

“Though the economy has been bad since his ascendancy to power, he has been doing some infrastructural developments that have not passed unnoticed,” Bright said.

He said Weah should dismiss the officials in order to put the issue to bed.

“President Weah needs to listen to the voice of the masses if he does not want to lose some of his potential voters,” he said.

Klopp unsure if he can further strengthen Liverpool squad this summer

Liverpool Football Club’s manager Jürgen Klopp is not sure if he will be able to further strengthen his squad this summer.

Liverpool have signed Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay since finishing runners-up to Manchester City in the English Premier League (EPL) last season.

But a lengthy injury list has left them short of midfielders.

The transfer window closes on Thursday and Klopp has now said: “We are working constantly on these type of things and we’ve spoken before about why sometimes it’s not happening.

“Sometimes it’s expensive, sometimes not the right player, but then situations change.

It needs to be the right player and we’re working.

If something will happen or not, I don’t know.

” Klopp is not expecting any of his injured players to return to contention for Saturday’s home Premier League game against Bournemouth.

Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Ramsay and Caoimhin Kelleher have all missed out recently, while Nunez is still suspended.

Klopp added: “For this weekend, probably not.

But after that Joel, Curtis, while Thiago is not too far away, and Jota is getting closer.

    So, positive news.

But I don’t think anyone is available for tomorrow (Saturday).

” Liverpool chase their first win of the season after taking just two points from their first three league matches.

Monday night’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United has left them seven points adrift of early leaders Arsenal.

Klopp admitted his players “have to improve” but said his side’s short-comings had been “football problems” that could be easily resolved.

The German said he was well aware of “the situation” but was not too concerned and insisted he was relishing the challenge.

He said: “The Manchester United game has gone, done and dusted and now we have a different game.

“It’s not a situation I wanted to have, but actually I like it as well.

    It’s a challenge.

“It’s not the start you want, but you have to fight back and I’m really happy we have an opportunity now to play at home, twice.

    “We understand the situation.

I have a sense our people understand the situation as well.

So, I can’t wait to create a special atmosphere and fit together the team and crowd to make things happen.

” Liverpool’s slow start has seen them give defending champions Manchester City a five-point advantage, but Klopp remains unfazed.

“You can worry if you want, but it doesn’t make too much sense,” he said.

“If you start worrying because other teams (Arsenal) have nine points, that’s obviously not helpful.

“This team delivered for four or five years on an incredibly high level, a consistently high level.

A little drop two years ago, but apart from that, so often is the winning side.

“I don’t speak about the close group, but some people take things for granted, like ‘Liverpool against who ever, in the end Liverpool will win’.

    That is not the case.

“We had to — and we have to — work incredibly hard for it and that’s what we’ll do.

It’s too early to close the season and that is it for us.

“Nobody knows what we can achieve at the end of the season, but there are a lot of points to get and we should start collecting them.

Guardiola sure Silva’s staying at Manchester City, says there’s no PSG bid

Pep Guardiola is adamant Bernardo Silva will stay at Manchester City beyond the end of the transfer window, revealing that the club were yet to receive a formal offer for him.

The versatile midfielder had been strongly linked with a move to LaLiga giants FC Barcelona after stating that Manchester City “know what I want” earlier this month.

However, recent reports suggested Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had made a 59 million pounds (69.7 million dollars) bid for the 28-year-old.

He scored the equaliser in Manchester City’s 3-3 draw at Newcastle United last Sunday.

Silva impressed as he scored 13 goals and added seven assists in 50 appearances for Manchester City last season.

But Guardiola did little to play down talk of a move when he revealed the midfielder “likes FC Barcelona very much” this week.

But speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Crystal Palace, Guardiola offered his clearest declaration yet on Silva’s future, insisting: “He will stay here, absolutely.

“We didn’t have any phone calls from any club regarding Bernardo Silva.

    That’s why he will stay.

” Asked whether any late move for Silva would leave Manchester City in a difficult position as they attempted to source a replacement, Guardiola said: “Yeah, but I tell you, he will stay.

” Manchester City have added Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez and Stefan Ortega to their squad since winning their fourth English Premier League (EPL) title in five years in May. Also, Julian Alvarez has arrived from River Plate, and Guardiola is more than happy with their business.

“I am always satisfied,” he declared.

“Now I start my seventh year [at the club].

I am always satisfied with the squad I have.

    I have no complaints.

” Meanwhile, marquee signing Haaland, who has found the net three times in his first three Premier League outings, is set to visit former club Borussia Dortmund.

This has come after Manchester City were drawn to face the Bundesliga outfit in the 20222023 UEFA Champions League group stages.

Manchester City will also face Sevilla and FC Copenhagen when their continental campaign kicks off.

However, Guardiola says he is yet to discuss the trip to Dortmund with Haaland, adding: “I didn’t speak with him, but I guess he will be happy to go back where he was so important.

“The draw is the draw, it is what it is.

We don’t have much time, but we have time to start to know them more deeply, and hopefully we can go through.

Manchester City fight back for thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle United

Quickfire goals by Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva helped Manchester City recover from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Newcastle United in a rip-roaring Premier League clash on Sunday.

Neither side had conceded a goal in the league this season but Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for champions Manchester City in the fifth minute at St. James’ Park. This was after he ghosted in and caught the Newcastle United defence flat-footed before finishing from close range.

But Manchester City should have gone two up in the 16th minute.

This was when Phil Foden attacked down the right, and he chose to shoot from a tight angle rather than squaring the ball to Haaland for the chance to be wasted.

The home side levelled through Miguel Almiron in the 28th minute as he bundled a pinpoint cross from Allan Saint-Maximin into the net.

He however had to endure a nervous VAR check which allowed the goal to stand.

Saint-Maximin tormented Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker and he put Newcastle United in position to pull off a huge upset when he set up Callum Wilson to make it 2-1 before half-time.

A brilliant free-kick by Kieran Trippier nine minutes after the break put them 3-1 ahead.

That sparked Manchester City into life, however, with Haaland hitting a post before pulling a goal back on the hour mark.

Silva then converted a glorious pass from Kevin De Bruyne to make it 3-3. Newcastle United’s challenge looked set to come unstuck when Trippier was shown a straight red card for a cynical high trip on De Bruyne.

But after a VAR review the decision was overturned and he was given a yellow card.

Manchester City dominated possession in the final stages but had to settle for a draw that left them second in the table on seven points, two behind leaders Arsenal.

Newcastle United are sixth on five points.

“We scored the third goal in the 64th minute, and it was very early.

I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t score the fourth.

But still, a good reaction from the team,” Silva told reporters.

Trippier was disappointed his side only came away with a point.

“We want to go toe to toe with them and I thought we did that throughout the match.

“But Manchester City are a top side and they have the quality of the players to get themselves back into the game,” he told reporters.

Own goal helps Arsenal win at Palace in Premier League opener

Arsenal battled to beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Friday as the new Premier League season got underway.

Gabriel Martinelli opened scoring for the first goal before home defender Marc Guehi turned the ball into his own net late on at Selhurst Park. Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus, who arrived from Manchester City in the close season, looked set to get off to a flying start by dancing through the Palace defence only to see his shot blocked, with Martinelli dragging the rebound wide of the post.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, another new signing from City, also looked lively and had an early shot blocked as Arsenal quickly raised the tempo but the Ukrainian soon had a hand in the opening goal as Palace were caught flat-footed at a corner.

Bukayo Saka’s inswinger found Zinchenko in acres of space and he headed the ball back across goal where Martinelli was on hand to nod it into the net.

Palace could have levelled before the break as Odsonne Edouard headed goalwards, but visiting goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale pulled off a superb reflex save to preserve his side’s lead.

The hosts wasted another great chance to draw level after the break when Wilfried Zaha sliced open the Arsenal defence with a perfect pass but again Ramsdale was quick to react, getting out to block Eberechi Eze’s shot.

Bukayo Saka’s inswinger found Zinchenko in acres of space and he headed the ball back across goal where Martinelli was on hand to nod it into the net.

The hosts wasted another great chance to draw level after the break when Wilfried Zaha sliced open the Arsenal defence with a perfect pass but again Ramsdale was quick to react, getting out to block Eberechi Eze’s shot.

After guiding his side to a fifth-place finish last term, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta looked worried as they became increasingly ragged in the second half but, aside from Zaha, the Palace attack looked out of sync.

Sensing they might snatch a draw, Palace coach Patrick Viera threw everyone forward for the last 15 minutes but the visitors doubled their lead when Saka’s cross was deflected into his own goal by Guehi in the 85th to seal the points for the away side.

“We started really sharp … to win here you need to suffer,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“We’ve done it and that’s part of the mentality that we want to build, to come to these places and find a way to win” French defender William Saliba was outstanding for Arsenal as he finally made his debut after three years spent on loan at different clubs in France.

“We knew it would be hard here but we were strong and solid,” the 21-year old said.

“I’ve waited a long time to make my debut and I’m happy to start with a clean sheet and a win, it’s important for confidence.

Nunez upstages Haaland as Liverpool beat Manchester City to win Community Shield

Nunez upstages Haaland as Liverpool beat Manchester City to win Community Shield  Shield Leicester (UK), July 30, 2022  Liverpool new boy Darwin Nunez drew the first blood in the battle of the super-signings with an encouraging 30-minute cameo on Saturday.

He capped it with the final goal in a 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield match played at the King Power Stadium in Leicester, UK.

Manchester City, last season’s English Premier League (EPL) champions, and Liverpool, the English FA and League Cup winners, both paraded their big-money acquisitions in this match.

But it was the Uruguay international who upstaged Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, after he came off the bench in the 59th minute with the score at 1-1. His aerial presence won the late penalty kick from which Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in front for a second time.

But the former Benfica striker, having earlier been denied a goal by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, was not finished there.

He stooped to head home his first goal for the Reds in domestic competition in added time.

“I liked the game a lot, but most of the time Manchester City games against us are cool to watch,” Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp said later.

    “We played the smart passes.

We saw Nunez in dangerous situations.

He used the spaces and finished well too.

” One new Manchester City signing did make his mark —- former River Plate forward Julian Alvarez —- climbing off the bench to cancel out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s opener.

But the focus was really on the big men upfront.

The traditional season curtain-raiser played out as expected with the country’s top two sides going at it once again.

But it was the nuance of what the new signings might bring which attracted the intrigue.

Haaland scored 86 goals in 89 matches for Borussia Dortmund before his move to the Manchester.

He is likely to add many more for Manchester City once he and they have adjusted to each other.

The Norway international had the fewest touches of any player in the first half —- eight —- and the service he received throughout was scant.

But that did not mean he was not a threat.

When Andy Robertson initially dispossessed him from Bernardo Silva’s cross, the 22-year-old reacted quickest to fire in a shot which third-choice goalkeeper Adrian batted away.

His next attempt moments later from another Silva cross did not go so well.

It came to him at an awkward height and he could not decide what to do with it and completely mis-kicked.

But he saved his worst for last when he blasted against the crossbar when faced with an open goal six yards out in added time.

Nunez, however, justified Klopp’s decision to continue his integration from the bench.

The 23-year-old scored four second-half goals in a pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig but that was not enough to persuade his manager to start him from the off.

But when he was introduced he was a bundle of energy and, unlike Manchester City with Haaland, Liverpool seemed to be better equipped to supplement his talents.

With virtually his first touch he was brought down by Ederson, who was spared by an offside flag.

Then the Manchester City goalkeeper had to race out to block Nunez’s shot with his chest after Jordan Henderson played him through.

Nunez is more a traditional number nine and less the multi-functional player Klopp usually prefers, but that can work to his advantage.

When he climbed highest to head down, the ball struck the arm of Ruben Dias. Referee Craig Pawson waved away handball claims but having been advised to consult the pitchside monitor he awarded a penalty kick and Salah swept past Ederson.

But Nunez was not finished there and his poacher’s instinct saw him stoop to head home Robertson’s knockdown in added time.

It was a pulsating finish to a game which had ebbed and flowed, with Alexander-Arnold putting Liverpool ahead in the 21st minute.

Thiago Alcantara’s cross was killed instantly under the foot of Salah, whose pass rolled invitingly into the path of the full-back.

He whipped a shot which just flicked off the head of Nathan Ake on its way in via the far post.

Manchester City improved in the second half and Alvarez, introduced at the same time as Nunez, equalised in the 70th minute.

That was after Adrian saved Phil Foden’s initial effort but fumbled the rebound.

VAR checked offside and, although the goalkeeper appeared to have two hands on the ball, after a lengthy delay the goal was ruled legitimate.

It meant the new signing followed in the exalted footsteps of Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez as only the third Argentinian to score in the Community Shield.

He will, however, still play second fiddle to Haaland while Nunez has begun the process of establishing himself as Liverpool’s long-term option upfront.

Nunez will also help in ensuring the sale of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich quickly becomes an OLAL(
