    By Igbaugba Ehigimetor

The 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) torch of unity kicked off an Edo tour on Monday morning.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the torch will, however, only visit the headquarters of the state's three senatorial districts, unlike previously.

Then the torch passed through all local government areas (LGAs) in the state.

The torchbearers are led by Sixtus Omokhagbor, an assistant to Philip Shaibu, the chairman of the local festival organizing committee (LOC), who is also the deputy governor of Edo.

NAN reports that other team members include Osagie Ohaimu, national record holder in the 21km running race, and Faith Fidelis, specialist in the 800m and 1,500m.

The first senatorial district to visit is Auchi, seat of Edo North.

There, the Head of Service (HoS) of the LGA West of Etsako is expected to receive the torch on behalf of the six other LGAs in the district.

The torch is expected to be transferred to the Edo Central senatorial district where the HoS of Ekpoma, Esan West LGA will receive it on behalf of the district.

The last place of visit will be the senatorial district of Edo Sud, where he will be received by the HoS d'Oredo LGA on behalf of the district.

NAN reports that the torch named “Unity Torch” will be lit Tuesday at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who will officially open the 20th NSF.

The 20th NSF, dubbed “Edo 2020” and the biggest sporting event in the country, kicked off on Friday with the arrival of state contingents of athletes and officials.

It will end on April 14 with the departure of all participants and other visitors. (NOPE)

Kogi contingent to NSF has passed COVID-19 test — Official

    By Usman Aliyu

Athletes and officials from the Kogi contingent of the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin have tested negative for COVID-19, said national sports director Onipe Halli.

Halli told reporters in Benin on Sunday that the result was also confirmed by the local organizing committee (LOC).

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that all sports fiesta athletes and officials labeled 'Edo 2020' have undergone a COVID-19 screening at the University of Benin Games Village.

Halli noted that the chairman of the local games organizing committee (LOC) and deputy governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, previously said two athletes from Taraba and Oyo state failed the test.

He said the results therefore confirmed the position of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi that there was no coronavirus in the state.

“All of the team that made up the 2020 NSF Kogi contingent tested negative for the COVID-19 virus after a series of tests performed by the medical team.

“The contingent was subjected to rigorous testing by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) team and all tested negative.
“After the test which is a prerequisite for all athletes and officials to participate in the games, all 41 athletes and 35 officials from Kogi tested negative,” Halli said.
Kogi's sports director said the state contingent received the results of its COVID-19 test on Sunday while other states were still awaiting their results.
The NAN recalls that the Kogi government had engaged in a face-to-face meeting with the NCDC on the situation of the coronavirus in the state.
The state, however, has recorded five confirmed cases of the virus with zero deaths, a position the NCDC insisted was due to the state's lack of adequate testing. (NOPE)

20th NSF: 13 States pass COVID-19 screening, Oyo, Taraba disqualified

    By Igbaugba Ehigimetor

Thirteen of the 15 states that arrived in Benin on Friday for the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF), labeled Edo 2020, have passed the COVID-19 screening.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the chairman of the local organizing committee (LOC) of the festival, Mr. Philip Shaibu, revealed this in an interview with journalists in Benin on Saturday.

He also revealed that two states, Oyo and Taraba, failed the screening because they failed to follow guidelines given to states to qualify them to participate in the country's biggest sports festival.

Shaibu, who is the states deputy governor, said the directive must be strictly adhered to to prevent the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus during the games.

Shaibu also confirmed that two athletes tested positive for COVID-19 after the instant PCR test on arrival and were taken to the isolation center at Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

According to him: "The contingent of Oyo and Taraba is disqualified from the 20th NSF unless the presidential working group on COVID-19 gives a counter directive because the two states did not follow the COVID-19 guidelines games.

“We need to follow the guidelines so that we don't use games as a means of spreading COVID-19 in the state, which has already been flattened.

"Even though the PTF allows admission from both states, teams must go through strict screening and testing for COVID-19 before being allowed to enter the camp." (NOPE)

Isoken Omo, an official for the ongoing 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) on Saturday in Benin, ensured the availability of accommodation for all athletes, officials and visitors throughout the games period.

However, Omo told the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) that those not accommodated by the organizers would have "pocket" accommodation for themselves.

She revealed that the committee was working in partnership with a number of hotels in the city for the purposes of the festival.

Omo, a project manager in the accommodation subcommittee of the festival's local organizing committee (LOC), revealed that visitors will benefit from a 30% reduction at LOC partner hotels.

“The festival hosting subcommittee, like the other subcommittees, is ready for the festival.

“We've been ready for games for over a year now, and we're waiting for that day.

“What we have done is to provide hotels close to the venues, so that people have no difficulty in moving between their hotels and the gaming venues.

“Although I cannot say at this time the exact number of rooms that we have ready for our visitors, but I can assure you that no one will be faced with an accommodation problem. There is something to welcome everyone.

“The games have a national and international impact because we have those who come to see what's going on.

“For example, we got a call from some Koreans who come just to observe,” she said.

NAN reports that the 20th NSF, labeled Edo 2020, had undergone several postponements before being finally set to be held from April 2 to 14.

While the opening ceremony of the festival is scheduled for Tuesday, contingents from states have started arriving in Benin since Friday.

“We have made all arrangements to ensure a safe race on Saturday, for both the virtual and elite races.

“It’s the first time in Nigeria and indeed in Africa. So, we want to make positive history. That is why we have trained our Local Organising Committee (LOC) members to ensure all due diligence.

”All COVID-19 protocols will be strictly observed and implemented, as the entire world is watching our progress on the virtual race,” Popoola said.

She also said the LOC has ensured that all virtual runners in the Open category understand the usage of the App which would monitor their races as they run anywhere in the country.

“There will be a central leaderboard to monitor the progress of the virtual runners and automatically pick the top winners.

”The virtual category has the Open and the Veteran categories as they run with different colours of numbers.

”The winners will also go home with cash prizes after a thorough check of the App,” the race general coordinator said.

Speaking also, the Technical Director of “Lagos Women Run”, Yusuf Ali, said the elite runners would be closely monitored.

He said this would help them to adhere to all the regulations especially, as it was done at the London Marathon recently.

“It’s the first time this will be happening in Africa and we are determined to make positive history.

“We are going to ensure that all the elite runners wear their face mask at the starting point at the Tafawa Balewa Square, as the entire athletics world will be watching.

“The runners will be given three face mask each, to wear the first one in the first 400 metres to 600 metres of the race and dispose, while the second face mask is worn at the 4-km mark, while the third one is worn from the 7-km mark to the finish line.

“All the technical officials and medical staff at the finish line must also wear their face masks.

“It’s the first time this will be happening in Africa and we are determined to make positive history,” Ali said.

India, Pakistan troops exchange fire on Kashmir LoC: Indian official

Troops of India and Pakistan Monday exchanged heavy fire and targeted each other's positions on Line of Control (LoC), dividing Kashmir, according to Indian military official.

The two sides exchanged fire on LoC in Sunderbani sector of frontier Rajouri district, about 222 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to Indian army officials, the exchange was going on until last reports poured in. However, so far no loss of life was reported in the skirmishes on the Indian or Pakistani side.

On Sunday a trooper was killed and two others wounded in an overnight exchange of fire in Shahpur-Kerni sector of adjacent frontier Poonch district.

The troops of India and Pakistan intermittently exchange fire on LoC and International Border (IB) in Kashmir, despite an agreement in 2003 to observe a cease-fire. However, the cease-fire remains in effect. New Delhi and Islamabad accuse each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating cease-fire agreements. And both sides maintain their troops gave a befitting reply to the other side.
