The Super Eagles of Nigeria are all set to take on Guinea Bissau in their third game in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, later this evening. With two wins from two matches, the Eagles are looking to extend their perfect run and also edge closer to sealing a spot at the prestigious continental tournament billed for Cote d’Ivoire next year.
With the full complement of 23 players and no report of injuries, Jose Peseiro is spoiled for choices and should be able to fashion out a winning formula against the Djurtus after enduring back-to-back losses in friendly games against Costa Rica and Portugal. Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, and even Ademola Lookman, who have all been in superb form for their respective clubs, are in town and ready to deliver for the Super Eagles.
Lookman and Osimhen have been painting Serie A red with goals, and the former England youth international hopes to do the same for the Super Eagles. “I’m looking forward to another big game for us in the qualification for the AFCON,” Lookman told NFF TV. “This is an opportunity for us to get close to qualification. It’s always nice to score goals, which I’ve been doing. So I would like to take that into the team and keep working hard.
Guinea-Bissau are football minnows compared to Nigeria, who are one of the most successful teams in African football history, having won the AFCON tournament three times in the past and attended the World Cup five times. Friday’s clash in Abuja will be the second match between the two countries on the international scene.
While everything points to the Eagles as firm favourites, Peseiro admits his team cannot afford to underestimate Coach Baciro Cande’s side, who he is sure will be looking to cause an upset in order to keep their qualification hopes alive. “I want a good atmosphere for our players. The fans should come and support us,” Peseiro said at the pre-match presser. “Guinea is a team with good quality. They would come here to defend and try to hit us on the counter.
“We want to put in our force, our motivation, and our commitment because it is not an easy match. There is no easy match with me. We will play with maximum force and organization. We can’t beat Guinea if we don’t put our maximum on the field.” Friday’s match will kick off by 5 pm at the MKO Abiola Stadium, and PREMIUM TIMES will provide LIVE UPDATES.

The Cleveland Browns have acquired some badly needed wide receiver help. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the New York Jets flipped Elijah Moore to the Browns in a swap of 2023 NFL Draft picks, per sources. The Browns will ship the 42nd overall pick to the Jets in exchange for Moore and pick No. 74.
Cleveland has eight picks in this year's draft, but the 74th selection is their top pick following the trade. Cleveland sent their first-round pick to the Texans in the Deshaun Watson deal last year. The Browns now have two picks each in Rounds 3, 4, and 5. The Jets, meanwhile, will hold steady at six selections.
Moore, who turns 23 years old next week, was a second-round pick (34th overall) of the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft. In 27 career games, he caught 80 passes for 984 yards and six TDs, also rushing 10 times for 59 yards and a TD. After starting the first six games last season, Moore saw his role and usage decrease, catching 21 passes for 243 yards and one TD in his final 10 games.
The Browns will bring back Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones as their top two receivers, but adding firepower was a big item on the offseason to-do list. Moore, who lined up inside and outside for the Jets, has only one 100-yard receiving game in his career (141 vs. Miami in 2021) but averaged a shocking 149.1 receiving yards per game in his final college season at Ole Miss.
The trade also helps the Jets clear $1.47 million from their books and gain trade capital in the form of the additional second-round pick, which could help give them more flexibility in their pursuit of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Steve Smith collects the ODI series trophy and joins his teammates in celebrations.
Steve Smith | Australia captain: It's been an enjoyable tour. We didn't play our best cricket, good enough to get over the line. This wicket was entirely different, we left a few out there with the bat. The spinners bowled beautifully, really good performance. (Turning point) It was a real grind in the field. The way the tail stuck and got us to 269, got us to a nice total.
Mitchell Marsh | Player of the Series: Natural aggression when it comes to batting. It's been a lot of fun. (On Opening) I've got my little mate (Warner) who'll come back at some stage. I'm coming off an extended break, worked on a lot of things. Came here really fresh. It's been great. Hopefully I can have fun with Delhi (Capitals) as well.
Adam Zampa | Player of the Match: I have had some success here. It's a tough place to come, always a huge challenge. I try to stay in the game and be competitive. Ashton Agar changed the game. Kudos to the bowlers who bowled before me as well. We trust each other, trust our game plan. The message was to trust our process and improve on it.
Rohit Sharma | India captain: I don't think it was too many runs. We didn't bat well. Partnerships are crucial and that's something we failed to do today. You are brought up playing in these type of wickets, it's important you apply. After the start, it was important for one batter to carry on and take the game deep. It just didn't happen. Lot of takeaways. We can take a lot of positives from the nine ODIs since January. We need to understand where we need to improve. It's a collective failure, we can take a lot of learnings from this series. Credit to the Australians. Both the spinners applied the pressure and so did their seamers.
India beat Australia by 21 runs to win the ODI series 2-1.

India standing on the cusp of the loss in this match and with that the series. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja have departed in the last 5 overs and it is now only a matter of time when Australia close this match.

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema starts for the El Clasico against Barcelona which could see the Blaugrana extend their lead in the LaLiga title race to 12 points with only 12 games to go this season.
Barcelona will be without key midfielder Pedri, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury. Pedri withdrew from the Spain squad for the international matches later this month before being omitted from Barcelona’s squad for the El Clasico. Reports on his fitness have been mixed, but ultimately he will not feature.
Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele is ruled out for tonight’s game, while top scorer Robert Lewandowski has returned from injury. Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo is back from suspension and Sergi Roberto replaces Ferran Torres in a 4-4-2 system.
Real Madrid was waiting anxiously on Karim Benzema’s fitness after he picked up an injury in the Champions League last-16 second-leg victory over Liverpool. While he missed training on Friday, the 35-year-old is considered fit for El Clasico. Ferland Mendy is back in the Madrid squad, but David Alaba and Alvaro Rodriguez are unavailable.
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen; Araujo, Kounde, Christensen, Balde; Sergi Roberto, Gavi, Busquets, De Jong; Raphinha, Lewandowski. Subs: Fati, Torres, Pena, Marcos Alonso, Alba, Kessie, Garcia, Torre, Tenas, Alarcon.
Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Nacho; Modric, Camavinga, Kroos; Valverde, Benzema, Vinicius Jr. Subs: Lunin, Lopez, Vallejo, Hazard, Tchouameni, Asensio, Odriozola, Vazquez, Ceballos, Mariano, Mendy, Rodrygo.
The El Clasico is set to be a decisive match in the LaLiga title race. With both teams missing key players, the remaining players have an opportunity to step up and make their mark. Fans around the world anticipate a closely contested match.

Sergio Perez held off Max Verstappen to win the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as Red Bull's dominant start to the new season continued in Jeddah. Perez crossed the line 5.3 seconds clear of team-mate Verstappen, who fought back from 15th after he limped out of qualifying with a driveshaft failure.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso took the final spot on the podium, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton fourth and fifth respectively for Mercedes. Red Bull are on another planet this season, and their crushing one-two finish - their second in as many races - will be a major cause of concern for Formula One bosses as it embarks on a record 23-round calendar.
Replays suggest work on Fernando Alonso's car began before the five-second penalty was served during the race. In Bahrain, Esteban Ocon served an additional ten seconds for that. Such a penalty would knock George Russell into third!
Max Verstappen has been voted Driver of the Day by fans - and he remains the championship leader with that fastest lap point.
"We had a big gap behind so at one point we decided to call it a day and settle for second,” Verstappen said after the race.
“What a start to the season, unthinkable one month ago,” Perez said. “We did the job in the first stint but the safety car tried to take the victory here like last year. But we got it. The team did a great job, we had a lot of mechanical issues but they got on top of it.”
A five-second time penalty for Alonso will NOT be enough for him to lose his spot on the podium. The Spaniard rocked home 5.1 seconds clear of Russell on that final lap.
And Verstappen absolutely launches through the final lap to nick his fastest lap point to take second place. Alonso finishes third ahead of Russell.

Arsenal have a massive chance to move further clear in the Premier League title race as they host managerless Crystal Palace in another key London derby this afternoon. With rivals Manchester City on FA Cup duty this weekend, the Gunners can extend their advantage at the top-flight summit to eight points going into the international break with a sixth successive league win.
Mikel Arteta will be looking for a swift reaction from his side after they were stunned by Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League on Thursday night, falling at home in the last-16 via the cruel lottery of a penalty shootout. They are heavy favourites to triumph here though and equal their entire points tally from last season with 10 games still to play, with Rob Holding deputising for the injured William Saliba.
The Eagles have still yet to win a league game in 2023 and sacked Gunners icon Patrick Vieira on Friday sitting just three points above relegation danger, with Under-21 coach Paddy McCarthy in temporary charge amid rumours over a shock return for Roy Hodgson. Follow Arsenal vs Crystal Palace live below, with expert analysis from Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium.
59 mins: Some ill-advised attempted trickery on the edge of his own box from Zaha almost opens the door for Arsenal again.
Gabriel Jesus and Kieran Tierney are about to come on for Arsenal.
57 mins: Arsenal fans once again singing Patrick Vieira’s name after that third goal.
Tomkins takes out Trossard and receives a yellow card.
Arteta has sent a few subs to warm up, including Emile Smith Rowe. Three goals to the good. Feels like an ideal time to rest some players.
54 mins: Game, set and match!
It’s another gorgeous Arsenal attacking move and Xhaka does not even have to break stride to finish it off after being played in on goal by Trossard.
Surely no way back for Palace now.
52 mins: Palace have responded to that early second-half onslaught, with Zaha stinging Ramsdale’s palms with a fierce drive to the front post.
Ramsdale was unlikely to be beaten from that angle and parries behind.
White clears the subsequent corner.
50 mins: Zaha cuts inside off the left flank and tries to weave his way through Saka and White in the box, going down under minimal contact.
47 mins: Heavy pressure from Arsenal straight from the off in this second half.
Tomkins turns away Saka’s cross from the byline and Zinchenko has a long-range drive blocked as they continue to pick up where they left off and turn the screw in search of a third goal that would truly put this game to bed.
Back underway at the Emirates!
No changes from Arteta or McCarthy at the break.
Will this be plain sailing for Arsenal from here, or can Palace stage a comeback?
What a season Bukayo Saka is having...
After a slow start, that was a good half from Arsenal.
They scored two well-taken goals and controlled the game from around the 20-minute mark.
Rob Holding has been solid so far. Ben White excellent at right-back.

Leon Edwards retained his welterweight title with a sensational points victory over Kamaru Usman at UFC 286 in London. Seven months on from his stunning win over The Nigerian Nightmare in Salt Lake City, the pair fought for a third time and this time in front of Edwards’ home fans at the O2 Arena.
In an action-packed fight, it was nervy throughout and Edwards had a point deducted in the third round for a fence grab. That left it right in the balance as the bout went the distance, but it was Rocky who got the majority decision, winning 48-46 on two of the cards with it 47-47 on the other, to extend his unbeaten streak to 12 fights.
“He didn’t get any takedowns I was landing cleaner shots,” Edwards said. “I took out his legs. Thanks to Kamaru for being a great competitor. I know it was a close fight so I knew I had to land the cleaner shots. He didn’t land many clean on me. He just had lots of pressure.”
“I didn’t see anything special. He doesn’t look hungry any more. He looks like he’s a champion and has cashed out.
“I’m the people’s champion and he needs to come see me now.
“I’m going to do the job on American soil. Let’s get it on in July on International Fight Week. We need to put it on that week, it makes sense.”
“He didn’t get any takedowns I was landing cleaner shots. I took out his legs.
“Thanks to Kamaru for being a great competitor.
“I couldn’t get the kick around his head. He had the perfect defence. I was trying to set it up with kicks to the body and legs.
“I know it was a close fight so I knew I had to land the cleaner shots. He didn’t land many clean on me. He just had lots of pressure.”
“I think I did enough to win the fight. I knew it was a close fight.
“Great gameplan. I’ve always said it, I knew I would see Leon again. I’m not done - I’ll see Leon again.
“He put on a great gameplan. I’ve always given him props, much respect. London, you’ve got yourself a hell of a guy and a great champion.”
The winner by majority decision... AND STILL!
Leon Edwards has done it!
This takedown defence from Edwards has been absolutely sensational.
Saying that, he’s down this time. Usman not making it count yet though, and he can’t. Edwards back on his feet. Into the final minute we go! Tough round to score... again.
Elbow attempt from Edwards, but it’s Usman who lets his hands go in the last few seconds. And they’ve gone the distance!
Brilliant fight. I’ve got it 47-47 - could go either way.

Israeli UFC star Yanal Ashmouz has delivered a stunning knockout victory over Sam Patterson on the UFC 286 prelims. In his UFC debut, Ashmouz caught a kick from Patterson and dished out an overhand right at the same time with just under a minute on the clock in the fight.
But as Patterson lost his balance, Ashmouz clipped him with a clean left hand that dropped the Brit and left him dazed.
Ashmouz then unloaded a barrage of strikes on the ground while Patterson simply couldn’t defend himself as referee Marc Goddard eventually stepped in to end the fight.
After coming round, Patterson was left confused and thought the fight was still going, with Goddard and his coach having to tell him the fight was over.
