Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the weekend busted another Tramadol cartel in Lagos with the seizure of millions of opioids pills and bottles worth over Five Billion Naira (N5billion) from their warehouse in Amuwo Odofin area of the state and arrest of two of the kingpins.
Femi Babafemi, Director, Media & Advocacy of NDLEA Headquarters in a statement on Sunday, said, anti-narcotics officers of the Agency also uncovered and dismantled a clandestine skuchies laboratory in a remote part of Sagamu, Ogun state where several equipment and various quantities of illicit substances used to mass produce the dangerous new psychoactive substance were recovered on Saturday 14th January 2023.
The drug cartels took the first heat on Tuesday 10th January from determined officers of the Agency who intercepted an imported consignment of Loud, a strong variant of cannabis, weighing 4, 878.72 kilograms along Awolowo road Ikoyi, Lagos. After a near fatal encounter with some suspected fake security agents escorting the drugs, the NDLEA operatives succeeded in recovering the consignment with a white truck marked BDG 548 XX conveying it.
This was followed by the seizure of 121,630 pills of pharmaceutical opioids and some quantity of Molly from a dealer, Charles Okeke on Wednesday 11th January at Idumota area of Lagos Island. Another effort by the Agency to bring the drug cartels to their kneels paid off on Friday 13th Jan when operatives tracked and located a major warehouse for pharmaceutical opioids at 17 Sir Ben Onyeka street, off Ago palace way in Amuwo Odofin area of the state while the owner of the store, Aloysius Okeke was arrested.
Illicit drugs recovered from the warehouse include: Three Million Two Hundred and Sixty Four Thousand Six Hundred and Thirty (3,264,630) pills of tramadol; Three Thousand Four Hundred and Ninety (3,490) bottles of codeine and Nine Hundred and Fifteen Thousand (915,000) capsules of pregabalin 300mg.
This came on the heels of the arrest of a suspect, Olarenwaju Lawal Wahab who distributes for the cartel same day. Recovered from his white Mercedes distribution bus include: 14,690 bottles of codeine-based syrup; 402, 500 tablets of Tramadol 250mg; 50,000 tablets of Tramadol 225mg and 210,000 capsules of pregabalin 300mg.
In neighbouring Ogun state, operatives in the early hours of Saturday 14th Jan. also discovered and dismantled a clandestine laboratory on the outskirts of Sagamu from where skuchies, a highly potent psychoactive substance made with a blend of Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Exol-5 and industrial codeine, was being produced in large quantity, packaged and distributed in jerry cans and bottles.
All the equipment for the production including power generators, industrial gas cylinders, drums and kegs as well as various quantities of illicit drugs such as 214kgs cannabis; 1,440 capsules of tramadol; 480 tablets of swinol; 1,440 tablets of Rohypnol and 114 liters of industrial codeine, among others were recovered from the building before sealing off the premises.
In Abuja, operatives of the FCT Command of the Agency on Thursday 12th Jan. raided the notorious Tora bora hills in the federal capital city and recovered 350.7kgs of skunk and 794 bottles of codeine hidden under rocks. This is even as 756kgs of C/S were recovered at Dawo village, Kaga LGA, Borno and transferred to the Agency on Friday 13th Jan. by officers of the Nigerian Army, FOB 29 Task Force Brigade, Benishiekh, in conjunction with Hunters group, based on intelligence from the State Command of NDLEA.
In Ondo state, operatives stormed Alayere, Akure North LGA, where they arrested a suspect, Sunday Make with 275kgs of Cannabis Sativa and Seeds, while a total of 272kgs of C/S were recovered from two suspects: Nwele Friday, 35, and Egbe Nnaemeka, 47 at Ifo layout, Abakpa Nike, Enugu. In Katsina, 34.3kgs of cannabis were also recovered from an uncompleted building in Muduru, Mani village after which the owner, Murtala Isiya was arrested in a follow up operation. Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd), while commending the officers and men of Lagos, FCT, Ondo, Enugu, Borno, Katsina and Edo Commands for the arrests and seizures, charged them and their compatriots across the country to sustain the heat on drug cartels in Nigeria while balancing their efforts on supply reduction with drug demand reduction activities.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has said Nasarawa State is expected to join the league of oil-producing states in the country, as it will commence its first oil well drilling in March this year.
Mele Kyari, group chief executive officer, NNPCL said on Friday, that the official spud-in of the first oil well in Nasarawa State will commence in March 2023.
According to Kyari, this is in continuation of hydrocarbon exploration activities in Nigeria’s inland basins.
NNPC’s boss disclosed this while receiving in the audience a delegation of prominent Nasarawa State indigenes led by Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state at the NNPC Towers, Abuja.
Kyari said that available data has confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in Nasarawa State, with the company ready to commence drilling the first oil well in Keana by March.
He explained that, once the Keana well proves successful, it can transform the potential of the state tremendously.
“We have carried out several exploratory activities in the form of gathering the right data and making the right decisions. We are very convinced at this point that very soon Nasarawa State will join the league of states with a hydrocarbon presence,” he said.
“This is not far away. We believed that we will start the first well in Nasarawa State by March and this is to confirm, it’s very typical science, that once we can make a success of that well, then the potentials of Nasarawa are beyond what I can explain at this point.”
He however warned that the process needs to be hastened as the world is now moving away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy.
According to Kyari, it is a work in progress but the opportunity of our lifetime is in our hands. This also must be done very fast. I must warn you that there is something called energy transition.
He further said that the whole world is turning away from fossil fuel, and the earlier you go to the market, the better for you. Otherwise, ten years from now, you will not find anyone agreeing to put money into the petroleum business, except if it comes from your cash flow.
“Everything we must do, we must do them now so that we can create the cash flow that will continue to sustain the project going forward,” he said.
Harping on the need for a clement environment to undertake the oil exploration in Keana, Kyari said the company has sufficient experience from the Niger Delta, as well as globally, stressing that his firm is taking adequate steps to avoid them in Gombe, Bauchi, in the Chad Basin, as well as anywhere else that the NNPC is going into exploration activities.

He however said support from communities is necessary.
“Community support is very eminent. We will continue to engage so that those mistakes of the past do not repeat themselves so that we can accelerate development in the communities,” Kyari said.
On the other hand, Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources said the country is willing to produce every available oil in the country, especially at a time when the world is moving away from fossil fuel.
He said “It is in your interest to produce as much crude as possible; take it out of the ground and monetise it as quickly as possible so that even if the world moves on, we would have at least taken advantage of our resources.
“I assure the Nasarawa State Governor to count on this office, in whatever way, to support the production of oil in Keana. We are on the same page.”
Sylva added that Ministry has adopted integrated field development because that is the easiest remedy for pipeline vandalization.
In his remarks, the Nasarawa State governor said Nigeria has so many opportunities and so many areas of great potential, like the Chad Basin, Benue Trough where Nasarawa State belongs, the Sokoto Basin, Benin Basin, and Anambra Basin amongst others.
Sule appealed to the NNPC, especially with the managing director going to acquire the 3-D seismic for Keana, to look at the aspect of what is happening in Keana, because from the outside potentials of what has been seen so far, presents excellent opportunities.
On his part, Sidi Bage Muhammad, the Emir of Lafia, who spoke on behalf of the community, said since the founding of Nasarawa State, there was nothing as great as the discovery of oil in Keana.
He expressed appreciation that oil exploration is taking place in Keana under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has made Nasarawa State his second home.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the cooperation of different stakeholders in Oyo to improve the turnout for the collection of the Permenant Voter Cards (PVCs).
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr Adeniran Tella, made the call at the Ibadan/Ibarapa zonal stakeholders’ forum on Thursday in Ibadan.
Tella said that all stakeholders at the grassroots needed to cooperate with the commission to conduct credible, free, fair and inclusive elections in the state.
According to him, Ibadan North Local Government Area in Ibadan/Ibarapa zone of the state, has the highest number of uncollected PVCs of 92,022.
This, he said, was followed by Ibadan South West Council Area, with 74,658, while Ibarapa North Local Government Area had the lowest number of uncollected PVCs of 5,022.
“The commission has fixed Dec. 12, 2022 to Jan. 22, 2023 as the dates for the collection of PVCs in all the 33 INEC Local Government Area Offices in the state.
“I am glad to let you know that, the commission has also devolved these PVCs collection to 351 registration areas/ward collation centres from Jan. 6 to Jan. 15, 2023.
“However, collection of PVCs will revert to all the 33 INEC Local Government Area Offices until Jan.22, 2023.
“No doubt, there is no going back on the use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and transmission of election results in real time using the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) for the forthcoming general elections,” Tella said.
Also speaking, Mr Olufemi Onaniyi, the Electoral Officer, Ibadan North East LGA, said that the meeting was organised to meet directly with the critical stakeholders in election process.
This, he said, would make the sensitisation on PVC collection get to the grassroots to change the attitude of the citizens toward collection.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting featured on deliberations by representatives of political parties, security agencies, religion bodies and artisans, among others. (NAN)

Arthur Eze, a businessman, says he does not support the presidential candidacy of Peter Obi, the flag bearer of the Labor Party (LP).
Eze recently spoke at the Ofala 2022 festival organized by Robert Eze, traditional ruler of Ukpo in Dunukofia LGA of Anambra State.
The businessman said he had warned the former governor of Anambra to drop his ambition and wait for another chance because he would not win.
“I warned Peter Obi to withdraw from this race, but he wouldn't listen. I clearly told him that I am not part of his plans ”, Punch quoted Eze as saying.
“I told him to give up his ambition and wait for next time. When he told me about his ambition, I asked him which states he thinks he can win in the West and in the North. He told me, but he didn't convince me.
“I told him that he can't not win; so you don't waste your time and money.”
Eze said that when the time is right, stakeholders in the southeast will back Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra.
“This is the person we are advising to take over as Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in the future,” he said, pointing to Soludo.
“We have a presidential candidate that we are supporting now. After his term, he will hand over Soludo as president ”.
Meanwhile, in November, Soludo said that Obi would not win the next general election.
In an article titled 'History calls and I won't shut up (Part 1)', Soludo said that the LP's presidential candidate does not have the necessary "structure" to win the elections.
“Let's be clear: Peter Obi knows he can't and won't win. He knows the game he's playing, and so do we; and he knows that we know," the governor had said.
“The game he is playing is the main reason he did not return to the APGA.
“The brutal truth (and some will say, God forbid) is that there are two people/parties seriously vying for the presidency – the rest is exciting drama!”
Soludo also said the former governor's investment in the state is "worth next to nothing."
But Obi countered, saying that Soludo is positioned to do better for Anambra.
“Now, the teacher is there, he will do what I didn't do. The schools that I did not roof, he will roof them ”, the LP candidate had said.
