times less likely to learn the basics than those who they live in other places The ability of education systems to ensure even rudimentary literacy skills for their students has declined in four out of 10 African countries over the past three decades The findings are published in the first of a three part series of Spotlight reports on critical learning in Africa called Born to Learn published by the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring GEM Report the Partnership for Development of Education in Africa ADEA and the African Union Manos Antoninis director of the GEM Report said that while all children are born to learn they cannot learn if they are hungry lack textbooks or do not speak the language in which they are taught support for teachers is another key factor Lessons for all All with teachers and school leaders and make more effective use of external resources The report includes data from complementary reports from developed countries in collaboration with the education report and other experiences will feed into a peer to peer learning mechanism on foundational learning hosted by the AU that was launched alongside the e report the Leveraging Education Analytics for pandemic has frustrated efforts to ensure all children have critical skills in reading and math This is why a focus on basic education within the policy dialogue platform of our continental strategy is warranted The work of the new LEARN network on basic education within the AU launched this week will build on the experiences of the countries that have participated in the Spotlight series of reports Key Recommendations Give every child a textbook Make sure all children have research based and locally developed learning materials Having your own textbook can increase a child s literacy scores by up to 20 The Lecture pour tous project in Senegal ensured that the textbooks were of high quality Benin is famous for its curriculum and system wide textbook reform that has provided more explicit and direct instruction for teachers Teach all children in their native language Give all children the opportunity to learn to read in the language they understand In 16 out of 22 countries at most one third of students are taught in their mother tongue The recent expansion of bilingual education in Mozambique covers around a quarter of primary schools and children learning under the new approach achieve 15 percent higher results than those learning in only one language Provide all children with a school meal Give all children the minimum conditions to learn zero hungry students in school Today only one in three primary school students in Africa receives a school meal Rwanda has committed to providing school meals to all children from pre school to lower secondary education covering 40 percent of the costs Make a clear plan to improve learning define learning standards set goals and monitor results to inform the national vision There is no information on the learning levels of two thirds of children in the entire region This represents 140 million students The Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project in Ghana is working on a framework for accountability for learning Build teacher capacity Ensure all teachers use class time effectively through training and teacher guides A recent study spanning 13 countries 8 of them in sub Saharan Africa found that     Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara on Wednesday gave `Award of Excellence’ to 61 teachers across the 16 local government areas of the state to mark this year’s World Teachers’ Day. Presenting the awards in Ilorin on Wednesday, AbdulRazaq appreciated the sacrifices and hard work of teachers to the development of the education sector.

    He described teachers as the centerpiece of his administration’s transformative agenda in the education sector, reassuring of government’s continuous commitment to their welfare and addressing all pending issues in phases.

    The awards came with varying gifts, which the governor described as a token of appreciation for those who mould the future of the next generation with their sweats, expertise and patience.

    “If there is anyone that we are obliged to honour and celebrate, that is the teacher.

    On that note, I thank all of you for your efforts, sacrifices and commitments.

    “The World Teachers’ Day is the idea of UNESCO in line with the 1966 Recommendations on the Status of Teachers across the world.

    “The theme of this year’s anniversary speaks directly to us in Kwara State.

governor to consider restoring boarding facilities which died a few years ago They also appealed to AbdulRazaq to end the pay disparities between teachers in basic classes and their senior secondary under AbdulRazaq s administration Our school benefitted from not just a few renovations but total renovation of the school I also want to express our gratitude to you for the sense of humility and commitment to the welfare of the teachers and students she said The Principal of Community Junior Secondary School Ipetu Igbomina in Irepodun Local Government Area Mr Babatunde Adegboyega said the administration has given a befitting facelift to schools while doing its best to promote welfare I want to appreciate your good gesture for the promotion implemented the welfare packages on salaries as well as changing the facelift of schools through renovation Adegboyega said The Principal of Queen Elizabeth Senior Secondary School Ilorin Mrs Sidikat Taye Lawal also commended AbdulRazaq for his prompt interventions on issues affecting the school On behalf of the old students of Queen Elizabeth School of which I am one of them thank you for transforming Queen Elizabeth School to a modern secondary school through the road network We want to appreciate you again for your care and love for the students on exchange programme because I remember last year I was in Minna Niger State for the Conference of Principals of Exchange Schools and Kwara State was ranked the best in the programme she said Mr Umar Abubakar the Principal of Senior Secondary School Kanko Shonga District in Edu Local Government Area said the trajectory of basic education has changed for good since the governor came on board Malam Balla Sa ad another principal from Islamiyah College Patigi described AbdulRazaq as a     “Our school benefitted from not just a few renovations but total renovation of the school.

    I also want to express our gratitude to you for the sense of humility and commitment to the welfare of the teachers and students,” she said.

    The Principal of Community Junior Secondary School, Ipetu-Igbomina in Irepodun Local Government Area, Mr Babatunde Adegboyega, said the administration has given a befitting facelift to schools while doing its best to promote welfare.

    “I want to appreciate your good gesture for the promotion implemented, the welfare packages on salaries as well as changing the facelift of schools through renovation,” Adegboyega said.

  •  The Kwara Government has assured the University of Ilorin Unilorin community that the construction of the flyover bridge along the university road would be completed before the end of the year Mr Rafiu Ajakaiye the Chief Press Secretary to Gov AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq gave the assurance on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen at the institution Ajakaiye who explained that the bridge would ensure free flow of traffic and stimulate economic activities also assured residents of surrounding communities that the government had their best interest at heart He described the bridge as the gateway to the university adding that the bridge is already at 55 per cent completion stage All things being equal it would be completed and put to use by or before December 2022 he said The spokesman explained that the construction of the flyover bridge was embarked upon as a way of restoring the hitherto neglected Ilorin Master Plan and opening up that axis of the state capital for more orderly development According to him the Ilorin metropolis and particularly Tanke suburb would continue to attract more population as time goes on He added that the completion of the flyover bridge would also ensure that transportation to and from the university main campus and the surrounding communities would be free He noted that this too would be of benefit to the residents of adjourning communities Ajakaiye described Unilorin as a pace setter and an important partner in progress with the Kwara Government since its establishment about five decades ago While acknowledging the contributions of the institution to the development of the state he noted that the university was a heritage that was well cherished by the government and people of Kwara He recalled that the state government had patronised products and services emanating from the university in so many instances in the past and would continue to do so for mutual benefits He assured the university management that the government was prepared to support the institution in every way possible with a view to assisting it in achieving its corporate objectives Ajakaiye explained that the state government was also doing everything possible to ensure that the state s school system was technology compliant to generate competent products that would be able to raise their heads anywhere in the world He disclosed that all the schools in four of the 16 local government areas of the state are now inter connected via technology introduced through the KwaraLEARN programme to ensure accountability in service delivery which would enhance teaching and learning NewsSourceCredit NAN
