The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has appealed to the Federal and State Governments to do more in the areas of security and education for the overall development of the country.

Abdullahi said no nation would achieve meaningful progress and development without efficient security and sound education.

The speaker made the call on Saturday while fielding questions from newsmen in Lafia as Nigeria marks 62 years anniversary and Nasarawa State 26 years of creation.

“Since the creation of the state, unemployment and insecurity, among other challenges, as well as other developmental issues are being addressed.

“The creation of Nasarawa State honestly to a very large extend has brought development and progress to the state, you can go around, there is infrastructural development such as township roads, electricity, water supply, across the state and agricultural  development, among others.

“In the areas of education and health, we have Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Federal Medical Centre, Keffi; Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; state Polytechnic, Lafia; School of Nursing and Midwifery; and Federal University, Lafia, among others.

“And where there is no education, no development; so government should focus more on primary, secondary and tertiary education so as to take our state and the country at large to the next level of development,” he said.

Abdullahi also appealed to politicians to focus on issue-based campaign in the interest of peace and for the overall development of the nation as well as success of the 2023 general election.

“The time for fighting ourselves is over, our campaign should strictly be issue-based.

“I urge the youths not to allow themselves to be used by any politician.

I want to call on the youths to urge politicians who want to use them for thuggery to use their children and the politicians should be at the front line,” he added.

Flooding: NEMA donates relief materials to 400,000 IDPs in Nasarawa State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has donated relief materials for distribution to more than 400,000 people displaced by flood in Nasarawa State.

The Director-General, NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Habib-Ahmed, made the donation to the state government in Lafia on Thursday.

Habib-Ahmed, represented by Dr Fatima Kassim, Director of Planning and Forecasting, NEMA, said the recent widespread flood in several states of the country, including Nasarawa was due to the heavy downpour and release of water from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon.

He said that 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) were affected in Nasarawa state which are, Awe, Toto, Keana, Doma and  Nasarawa.

He said others are flash points, included Nassarawa Eggon, Keffi, Obi, Lafia, Wamba and Karu LGAs. The director-general said that while the Federal Government commiserated with the victims, it could not compensate for lives and properties lost or the aftermath trauma.

“What the Federal Government does through NEMA is to help people get back to their feet and restart their lives with relief interventions.

“Relief intervention is a testimony that the Federal Government through NEMA is always concerned about the welfare and wellbeing of the people,” he said Habib-Ahmed said that disaster was inevitable, hence the need to learn to prepare for them, mitigate their impact and transfer losses through insurance.

He appealed to the state government to take disaster risk reduction to the grassroots where most incidents happen.

“In addition, set up of functional and vibrant Local Emergency Management Committed in every LGA is the way to go to ensure timely intervention to save lives when disasters occur,” he said.

The NEMA boss thanked the government for its cooperation and assured the state of the agency’s continuous support.

Receiving the items, Gov. Abdullahi Sule, represented by his Deputy Gov. Emmanuel Akabe, thanked NEMA for the gesture, saying it would go a long way to ameliorate the plight of the victims.

He said that the state government had been proactive through its Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) in planning for disasters, especially flooding.

According to him, the state government has made budgetary provision and embarked on massive awareness campaign on flood through NASEMA as well as identified alternative arrangement for those living in floodplains.

He, however, said that the recent devastation caused by flooding was more than the state government anticipated.

Sule further said that the state government was doing its best to provide relief materials to the victims but needed more support given its lean resources and several competing demands.

He, therefore, called for more support from NEMA, assuring that the relief items  and that of the state government would be judiciously distributed to the affected persons.

In his remarks, Mr Zachary Allumaga, Executive Secretary, NASEMA, said that more than 400,000 people were displaced by the flood in 92 communities across 11 LGAs of the state.

He expressed gratitude to NEMA for the items and appealed for more from other agencies and good spirited individuals.

Allumaga pointed out that the relief items from NEMA and the state government was grossly inadequate considering the enormity of the disaster.

He gave assurance that the governor would soon visit the affected areas to distribute the items to the victims.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the items donated included mattresses, blankets, bath towels, nylon mats, mosquito nets, cooking stoves and pots.

Others include  plastics buckets, plates and spoons,  wrappers, toilet soaps and detergents, sanitary pads and baby diapers as well as clothing for men, women and children.

Gov Sule lauds NPC’s commitment to successful 2023 census

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has commended  the National Population Commission (NPC) for its commitment to ensure a successful population census in 2023. The governor gave the commendation on Wednesday in Lafia at Nasarawa stakeholders Summit on 2023 Population and Housing Census.

He said  the successes recorded so far in preparation for the census were pointers to the commission’s resolve to do a credible job that would be acceptable by Nigerians.

According to Sule, the success of activities leading to the population census such as trial census,   enumeration area demarcation as well as constant engagement of stakeholders are confirmation of the level of preparedness by the commission to ensure a credible census.

“Population is a critical factor toward sustainable development and any nation desirous of development must know the accurate population to enable proper planning and execution of the plans.

“No nation desirous of development relies on estimated population, because such estimate often ignores demography that can only be revealed by census,” Sule added.

The governor said that Nasarawa needed the census as the state’s population as captured in the 2006 census was highly inaccurate.

“The population of Karu Local Government Area alone should be more that what was captured for the entire state in 2006,” he said.

He assured of his administration’s continuous support to the commission toward the success of the 2023 population census exercise.

In his remarks, Mr Silas Agara, Federal Commissioner representing Nasarawa State at the Commission, commended the Federal Government for approving the conduct of the population census in 2023. Agara also thanked the  state government and others stakeholders for their support to the commission towards the success of the exercise.

The federal commissioner  assured Nigerians that the commission was ready and  would do its best  to deliver a credible and acceptable census in line with the United Nations standards in  2023. .

    Assembly committee warns against instability

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has urged the Chairman of Doma Local Government Area of the state, Mr Ahmed Usman and his legislative arm, to maintain good working relationship.

Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, the chairman of the committee, made the call in Lafia on Tuesday.

The chairman said that there were allegations that some appointments in the council were without approval from the legislative arm, among other emerging issues.

He said that the meeting with the councillors was a prerequisite to hearing their own side of the story before the follow-up meeting with the chairman.

Alkali said that they had decided to wade into the issue as no development would take place without peaceful co-existence among the two arms of government of the area.

The lawmaker said that speedy development would not be achieved in the council if the two arms of government in the area were in loggerheads.

The assemblyman also called on the two arms of government in Doma and other local government areas in the state to respect the right of each other.
