Alvin Bragg's decision to convene the grand jury early this year could lead to the first criminal charge against a former U.S. president.
Alvin Bragg became Manhattan's first Black district attorney in 2022, following his election in November 2021.
The office prosecutes nearly all criminal cases in Manhattan, staffed by about 500 lawyers. The district attorney also is a key political figure, overseeing cases that often involve defendants with immense wealth, fame and influence.
Manhattan district attorney is one of the most high-profile prosecution jobs in the world, dramatized on TV shows like "Law & Order" and "Blue Bloods." Robert M. Morgenthau, who held the job for 35 years, was the model for the fictional character Adam Schiff on "Law & Order," one of the series' original leads played by actor Steven Hill.
The office has a budget of about $150 million and has used a separate $800 million forfeiture fund bankrolled by Wall Street settlements for grants to criminal justice and community organizations and big initiatives, such as testing backlogged rape kits.
Bragg is one of five elected district attorneys in New York City — one for each of the city’s five boroughs. Bragg won a tough Democratic primary and then the general election to become Manhattan's district attorney. He took over for retiring District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.
Bragg is just the fourth elected district attorney in Manhattan in the last eight decades. Frank Hogan served for 31 years. Robert Morgenthau was in office for 34 years, until he was 90. Vance retired at the end of 2021 after 12 years.
Bragg's career includes time as a federal prosecutor, an assistant attorney general for the state of New York and a civil rights attorney who represented Eric Garner's mother as she pressured New York City officials for more accountability against the officers and commanders involved in her son's 2014 death by a police chokehold.
Bragg's campaign included promises to change the culture of the office and allied him with other progressive prosecutors aiming to eliminate cash bail.Shortly after taking office, he released a public memo promising the district attorney would no longer prosecute some low-level misdemeanor crimes.
Bragg, who grew up in Harlem, graduated from Harvard Law School.
Bragg inherited a yearslong grand jury investigation into hush money paid on Trump's behalf during his 2016 presidential campaign.
After taking office, Bragg slowed down his office's move toward an indictment against Trump and said he had concerns about the strength of the case. That sparked a public protest by two prosecutors who were leading the investigation and resigned.
But Bragg convened a new grand jury early this year after successfully convicting Trump's family company for tax fraud. He called that result a “strong demarcation line” for proceeding with other parts of the probe.
In general, the grand jury process is seen as extremely favorable to prosecutors.
Proceedings are closed to the public and there is no judge. Prosecutors call and question witnesses, and grand jurors — people drawn from the community — can ask questions. Grand jurors can either agree there is enough evidence to issue an indictment, find there is not enough evidence, or tell the prosecutor to file lesser charges.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sent an email to his staff stating they will not be intimidated after Donald Trump called for protests to break out if the former president is arrested, according to reports.
In the internal email, seen by several news organizations, Bragg told employees that steps are being taken to protect them should any violence erupt amid claims from Trump that he will be indicted on Tuesday as part of the probe into hush money allegedly paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016.
There have been fears that Trump's Truth Social posts on Saturday calling for his supporters to protest his apparent upcoming arrest amounted to incitement, with comparisons made between his social media comments and the speech he gave on January 6 prior to the Capitol riot.
While there has been rising speculation that Bragg's office could soon make a decision on whether to indict Trump as the grand jury proceeding appear to be nearing an end, there have been no other official indications apart from Trump's posts that he will be arrested Tuesday specifically.
"Our law enforcement partners will ensure that any specific or credible threats against the office will be fully investigated and that the proper safeguards are in place so all 1,600 of us have a secure work environment," Bragg wrote in his email.
"In the meantime, as with all of our investigations, we will continue to apply the law evenly and fairly and speak openly only when appropriate," Bragg added. "We do not tolerate attempts to intimidate our office or threaten the rule of law in New York."
While Bragg didn't identify Trump by name, the D.A. did make reference to the "public comments surrounding an ongoing investigation by this office."
Trump twice called for protests to break out should he be arrested on Tuesday as part of the hush money investigation.
Prosecutors are looking into whether money Trump allegedly arranged for his attorney Michael Cohen to pay Daniels to keep an affair she claimed she had with the former president a secret ahead of the 2016 Election amounted to a campaign violation. Investigators are also examining if any records were falsified when Cohen was reimbursed for the money, which was listed in company records as legal fees.
"IT'S TIME!!! WE ARE A NATION IN STEEP DECLINE, BEING LED INTO WORLD WAR III BY A CROOKED POLITICIAN WHO DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HE'S ALIVE, BUT WHO IS SURROUNDED BY EVIL & SINISTER PEOPLE WHO, BASED ON THEIR ACTIONS ON DEFUNDING THE POLICE, DESTROYING OUR MILITARY, OPEN BORDERS, NO VOTER I.D., INFLATION, RAISING TAXES, & MUCH MORE, CAN ONLY HATE OUR NOW FAILING USA," wrote Trump, who denies having an affair with Daniels.
"WE JUST CAN'T ALLOW THIS ANYMORE," he continued. "THEY'RE KILLING OUR NATION AS WE SIT BACK & WATCH. WE MUST SAVE AMERICA!PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!"
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Trump's comments as "reckless" and said he "cannot hide from his violations of the law, disrespect for our elections and incitements to violence."
A spokesperson for Trump said there has been no official notification other than "illegal leaks" from the Justice Department and the DA's office that prosecutors are preparing to "take his Witch-Hunt to the next level" with an arrest on Tuesday.
"President Trump is rightfully highlighting his innocence and the weaponization of our injustice system," the spokesperson told Newsweek.
Newsweek has contacted Alvin Bragg's office for comment via email.

Manchester City's star player Erling Haaland has been on fire recently, scoring 8 goals in his last two matches, with 5 goals in the Champions League against RB Leipzig and a hat-trick against Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-finals. However, his extraordinary form has led to warnings from Pep Guardiola, who believes that he will now face excessive expectations from fans and pundits alike.
Pep Guardiola cautioned that Haaland's recent success may come back to haunt him as he will now be expected to score at least three goals every game. Guardiola said that, while the player would not be affected, the expectation would be hard to fulfill, and it would be an issue he would need to consider going forward.
Haaland's form in front of goal has been nothing short of incredible, having scored 42 goals in just 37 appearances for Manchester City this season. He has now scored six hat-tricks in all competitions, which is more than any other Premier League player combined.
Guardiola will now be hoping that Haaland can maintain his excellent run of form when they go up against Liverpool on April 1. And with the striker's striking record, the odds of him scoring in the game are high.

Presenter Jimmy Kimmel joked on the Oscar's stage about the use of the diabetes drug, Ozempic, as a weight loss formula by Hollywood A-listers. This raised the question of its supervised use as weight loss medication. "Though not available in India yet, GLP receptor agonist drugs are good for weight loss and consequently diabetes and related problems. But these should be used according to indication because side effects are problematic," says Dr Anoop Misra, Chairman, Fortis CDOC Hospital for Diabetes and Allied Sciences.
Semaglutide, also known as Ozempic or Wegovy, is a diabetes drug that has shown remarkable results as a weight loss medication in higher doses. The medicine can help people lose weight, particularly those who have a history of obesity and related diseases in their family. Additionally, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular events in Type 2 diabetes patients. Ozempic has shown to help study participants lose around 15% to 20% body weight, an astonishing feat, with bariatric surgery being the only other approach with such results. As obesity becomes a growing health burden in India, Ozempic could be the closest thing to a magic bullet for weight loss, says Dr Misra.
Dr Misra notes that Ozempic generates gastro-intestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for the first few weeks. Once available in India, it is likely to be expensive, estimated to cost between Rs 8000 and Rs 9000 a month. "It should not be the first-line treatment for obesity for all," he warns. He suggests it should be prescribed to three categories of people who are obese and have dysfunction, to those who aren't able to lose weight the conventional way but are obese, and to those who are obese with uncontrolled diabetes despite taking medication.
Dr Misra saw a similarity between other methods of weight loss and Ozempic in that weight gain tends to occur after the intervention period ends. Therefore he emphasized that lifestyle correction remains the essential way to maintain ideal body weight. Moreover, those with diabetes tend to lose little weight compared to those without it. Dr Ambrish Mithal, Chairman and Head, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Max Healthcare, notes that caution is required with Ozempic as many weight loss drugs have had poor side effects in the past. Dr. Mithal reminds people not to overlook the importance of diet, sleep, and exercise to maintain sustainable weight loss. Ultimately, medical supervision is vital for safe and effective use of weight loss medications.

Manchester United is reportedly pursuing Tottenham striker Harry Kane as their top transfer target for the upcoming summer window. According to the Mirror, United is prepared to break the British transfer record to acquire the England international to strengthen their ranks and challenge for next season's title under Erik ten Hag's leadership.
As Kane's contract with Spurs ends in 2024, his future with the team remains uncertain. Numerous clubs, including Bayern Munich, are reportedly interested in signing him if he decides to part ways with Tottenham. Although Kane has not made any official announcements, the 29-year-old striker expressed his frustration with Spurs' underwhelming season, having been knocked out of the Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.
Despite Tottenham's struggles this season, Kane remains a key player for the team. He currently holds the title of the club's all-time leading goalscorer and has scored 20 goals in 27 matches. Interestingly, his performance equals his record of scoring 20 goals in a Premier League season for the sixth time, placing him second to Alan Shearer's seven goals in various campaigns.
Manchester United will face Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday followed by the second leg of their Europa League playoff match against Betis on Thursday.

Emma Raducanu's claim that she is unaware of when Britain are next playing in the Billie Jean King Cup next month appears to have caused a distinct raising of the eyebrows from Captain Anne Keothavong.
Ahead of a bumper second round of matches at Indian Wells on Saturday night, Keothavong took the unusual step of using Twitter to express surprise at the admission of her number one player.
Following her first round win in the Californian desert Raducanu was asked about her participation in the team event's World finals qualifier, which will take place next month in Coventry against France.
'I don't even know when it is, to be honest,' the former US Open champion said. 'I haven't thought about it. I've just been so in my zone as I've said. I'll decide [on my participation] later.'
Overnight Keothavong responded to one report of her comment with a thinking face emoji. Separately she posted the observation, seemingly in reference to that: 'My communication skills are generally good in case anyone was wondering.'
The British captain has travelled to the US to attend the biggest tournament since the Australian Open and run the rule over the players at her disposal, and it is surely unthinkable that she has not had some kind of contact with her leading player.
It also stretches belief that the meticulously-prepared Raducanu would not know that she and her GB team-mates were playing on April 14-15, barely a month away. The dates have long been established, even though the Lawn Tennis Association left it very late to secure a venue for a match expected to be played in a 6,000-capacity arena.
Now there is the prospect of a drama involving the squad's best-known player in the lead-up to the tie.
This always appeared on the cards, because of how close it is to the Porsche Grand Prix tournament in Stuttgart, which takes place the following week, also indoors but on clay.
With Porsche among Raducanu's portfolio of sponsors it is an event she needs to commit to, and there would only be a few days for her to adjust to the different surface. It is unthinkable that this cannot have been on the radar of her and her management.
Raducanu played in the corresponding qualifier last year away to the Czech Republic, but withdrew from the finals event in Glasgow due to the wrist problems which ended her 2022 season early.
Prior to this week's event in Indian Wells she complained that soreness had returned to her wrists, although that did not stop her registering an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win in the opening round against Danka Kovinic, the world No 62 from Montenegro.
The prospect of her not playing in Coventry will be a concern to Keothavong and more widely the LTA, who are especially keen to promote the women's game and showcase it in areas of the country which rarely get to see tennis at elite level.
While GB ended up doing well in Glasgow to make the semi-finals, the absence of the top player would leave the team without anyone from the top 100 singles.
Harriet Dart is the next highest ranked at 109 while Jodie Burrage, Heather Watson, Katie Boulter and Katie Swan are clustered below that.
On Saturday night Raducanu is due to take on recent Australian Open semi-finalist Magda Linette on a busy evening of British action in the second round at Indian Wells.
Jack Draper is also scheduled to face compatriot Dan Evans, with the prospect of the winner taking on Andy Murray. The 35 year-old Scot will face Radu Albot of Moldova after his planned opponent, Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta, pulled out with injury.
On Friday night Cam Norrie, the Indian Wells champion of 2021, comfortably made it through to the third round when he defeated Tung Lin Wu of Taipei, 6-2, 6-4.
Carlos Alcaraz is top seed in the men's event in the absence of Novak Djokovic. He is still barred from entering the United States, although he hopes that might be rescinded in time for the Miami Open. Overnight there was a considerable upset when second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was beaten 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 by Australian Jordan Thompson.

Ja Morant, star point-guard of the Memphis Grizzlies, is currently under investigation in Colorado after footage on social media appeared to show him brandishing a gun in a nightclub after the team's game against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.
The Glendale police have not received any complaints, but they are looking into whether Morant has violated any laws.
The incident has caused concern for the Grizzlies' fan base, who are already concerned with past controversies surrounding the player.
This current investigation is the latest in a string of incidents that have overshadowed his career, including Davonte Pack being banned from home games for a year after an incident in Memphis, and a civil lawsuit brought after an alleged assault on a 17-year-old at Morant's home.
Morant addressed his recent behavior in a statement, taking responsibility for his actions and apologizing to his family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies Organization for letting them down.
He announced that he would be taking time off to seek help and learn better ways of dealing with stress and his overall well-being.
Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins provided few details on Morant's return and said that the team is supporting him while holding him accountable for his actions.
Jenkins acknowledged that Morant has made "difficult decisions and poor choices" but declined to outline the steps needed for him to return to the team.
The investigation is ongoing, and there is no timetable for Morant's return to the court.
While his future with the team remains uncertain, the Grizzlies show support and hold hope that Morant can recover from these "difficult times."

Argentinian soccer legend Lionel Messi was recognized with the prestigious The Best FIFA award for 2021 following his incredible performance in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Messi has been accompanied each step of the way in his victories with an amazing seven goals and three assists during the tournament.
Notwithstanding his team trophy win with Paris Saint Germain, Messi has contributed immensely this season, with 33 goal credits in 28 matches - helping PSG to a 8 point lead in Ligue 1.
This award was the second time Messi has picked up The Best FIFA player of the year award since 2016, equalizing the otherwise exclusive achievements of Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski who've shared all but the 2018 prize, which was awarded to Luka Modric.
Additionally, Lionel Messi is the first and only player to score in the World Cup in his teens, 20s, and 30s.
He looks to continue his success when his team PSG face off against Nantes this coming Sunday.
