Kogi Assembly seals Dangote Cement factory

The Kogi House of Assembly on Wednesday sealed the Dangote Cement factory, Obajana, following agitation by Kogi indigenes on the questionable circumstances surrounding the acquisition of the company.

The lawmakers ordered the closure of the facility after an investigation into its operations allegedly revealed that no valid acquisition took place for the company.

Jubilant youths, who had trooped to the company on hearing the news of the closure, attrmpted chasing workers away, but were stopped by Kogi government officials, who promptly waded into the matter to avoid damage.

The youths claimed that the company had neglected the host community from where it had been making billions, in spite of the fact that residents were dying from illnesses resulting from pollution.

The state legislature alleged that Dangote, upon invitation by the Assembly, requested for more time but did not appear at the House to show any evidence to the contrary.

Mr Kingsley Fanwo, the state Commissioner for Information, while responding to journalists, said: “Pursuant to the Constitutional authorities of the Kogi State House of Assembly, and upon petition by the people of Kogi State, an investigation was carried out on the acquisition of Obajana Cement Company by Dangote Company.

“It was found that no valid acquisition took place, as Dangote could not show evidence of what was paid as consideration for the acquisition.

“The legislators invited the Chairman of the Company, Aliko Dangote, before the House for explanations but he failed to appear before the State Assembly, giving excuses.

“The House of Assembly therefore ordered the closure of the company pending when they are able to present it with credible evidence of a valid acquisition,” Fanwo said.

The Director-General, Lands, Mr Nasir Ochi, also said: “In this regard, the security agencies were directed to give effect to the Resolution.

“Similarly, the various organs of Government were also informed about this Resolution.

“By law, Kogi State House of Assembly can conduct investigation, order anyone to appear before it or produce any document.

Failure to obey such summons may lead to the arrest of a person who failed to appear.

“The Government of the State has an obligation to also respect and give effect to such Resolution from the House in the interest of peace and security of the State, and to avoid anarchy or breakdown of law and order.

“In this regard, Dangote has an obligation to respect and also give effect to the Resolution of the Kogi State House of Assembly to avoid any act of lawlessness,” Nasir said.

2023: Yahaya Bello’s ex- commissioner picks APC forms for Reps

Mr Kingsley Fanwo, the immediate past Commissioner for Information in Kogi, has picked the All Progressives Congress (APC) Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to contest the House of Representatives ticket for Yagba West Federal Constituency.

Fanwo who had earlier resigned his appointment from Gov. Yahaya Bello’s government, said if given the opportunity to represent the Constituency, he would do better as a lawmaker by improving the well-being of the people.

Speaking with newsmen after picking the forms on Friday, in Abuja Fanwo lauded Bello for the opportunity to learn under him.

“I have learnt from the best in terms of politics, administration and humanitarian service.

“I have learnt from the best and the best is Alhaji Yahaya Bello, we are all proud of him and his giant strides looking at what he has done in Kogi, ” he said.

According to him, Bello inherited a balkanised state that was divided and disunited but got united under his leadership, who also ensure its security.

He said that the Kogi governor had been able to put his foot down to ensure that the state was the safest in the country today.

Fanwo said the governor had also ensured the prosperity of the people of the state by implementing programmes that touched on their welfare.

“You will agree with me that he is the best thing to have happened to the people of Kogi.

“And that’s why we are not surprised that Nigerians are calling on him to be the country’s next president.

“When he becomes president, I am not saying if he becomes president, he will ensure security, he will ensure unity and he will enthrone prosperity in our nation,” Fanwo said.

He said he was contesting to represent the people of Yagba Federal Constituency to improve their well-being.

He noted that the people of the constituency were blessed with the best brains in Nigeria but lacked adequate representative in the lower Chamber.

He said though the current representative of the Constituency had done some good things, there was need to do more.

He added that he was joining the race to contest the seat in 2023 elections because he could do it better, saying that he would ensure participatory representation.

You can not represent the people you don’t know, you can not represent the people you don’t even understand the challenges they are going through.

“You must know them, you must understand them before you can represent them and that is what we are bringing on board from 2023.” Fanwo stressed.

N20bn bailout fund: Kogi govt. has facts to disprove EFCC’s allegations – Commissioner

Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, has said that the state government has facts to disprove the allegations the Economic and Ficial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had levelled against it.

The commissioner disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists, stating that the Kogi government would prepare a comprehensive response to the latest of what it called “the desperate moves “.

The commissioner was responding to a statement issued on Friday where it alleged that the state government had kept N20 billion bailout fund meant to pay workers salaries in a commercial bank in order to yield interest.

Fanwo said that EFCC’s move was only a way to save its face in view of what it called its“ unethical conduct in the matter in dispute“.

“It is laughable the EFCC’s attempt to desperately wriggle out of a bad case with another mischief aimed, again, at misleading Nigerians.

“The EFCC had finally exposed the fact that it had been pursuing a political agenda all along.

“The press statement is a malicious attempt to rope the state into a matter that ordinarily has nothing to do with our dear state.

“We maintain the unassailable truth that the Kogi State Government did not operate such account with the Sterling Bank as affirmed in a letter .

“We sympathise with the EFCC as it has been a herculean task to cover the initial misinformation and deliberate deceit ,” the statement added.

Fanwo stressed that the Kogi government would react to the latest EFCC statement comprehensively, noting that “every option that is legal will be considered to maintain the innocence and transparency of our government.”

“Kogites (Kogi people) and indeed, Nigerians should rest assured that we will get to the root of this matter,” he assured.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on Aug. 31, the EFCC in a submission before a Lagos High Court alleged that the Kogi government kept a N20 billion loan meant for payment of salaries to yield interest at the Sterling Bank.

The Kogi government, in its reaction, presented documents to show that the state did not operate any such account with the bank.

Uneasy calm in Lokoja as schools, banks, businesses still remain closed

There is palpable uneasy calm in Lokoja on Tuesday as banks, schools and business premises remained closed for fear of the unknown.

Assailants, riding in a motorcade of five vehicles, shot and killed six persons and injured many on Monday in the Kogi State capital.

The gunmen stormed different parts of Lokoja after disrupting protests by youths who also looted palliatives kept in some government warehouses.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who visited some areas of the city on Tuesday reports that many residents remained indoors while only few vehicles were seen on the roads.

Three deaths were recorded at Adankolo, one at Lokongoma, one at a restaurant in a popular area of the city and one at “Zone 8’’ area, bringing the total to six.

The police refused to confirm the official number of casualty.

Many victims with gunshot wounds were seen in private hospitals across the city, with the poor ones among them still looking for money to have the pellets extracted from their bodies.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, blamed the gun attacks on hoodlums whom, he said, infiltrated the ranks of the protesters.

Spate of kidnappings in Kogi reduced, says Gov Bello

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has said that the spate of kidnappings in the state has reduced to the barest minimum.

He stated this on Saturday at the Senate Press Corps’ Retreat 2020, held in Lokoja, Kogi with the theme, “Democracy and Development in a Federation: Roles of Media, States and Parliaments’’.

Declaring the event open, Gov. Bello, who was represented by his Deputy, David Onoja, said that before the emergence of the present administration in the state in 2016, “Kogi was noted as the kidnap capital of Nigeria’’.

“Our highways were littered with virtually weekly occurrences of armed robbery, especially night travelers in luxurious buses.

“It’s four years nine months later, though we have not been able to eradicate the kidnappings totally, the numbers have drastically reduced to the barest minimum.

“And highway robberies, bank robberies are becoming things that are in our history books rather than what we experienced.

“We are doing our best in fighting insecurity in Kogi and ensuring that life and property are secured,’’ he said.

On the flood ravaging the state, Bello assured the people of Kogi and Nigerians that “whilst we may not be able to stop the flooding, we will prevent as many lives as possible from going with the menace’’.

“That is our focus, that is our target, that is what we shall achieve by the grace of God.’’

According to him, part of the achievements so far recorded in the state are the bold steps at reforming the civil service and the pension system.

“Today, it is no longer he who knows who but on merit and your ability to serve selflessly.

“The leakages and fraud that were endemic in the Kogi State Civil Service prior to 2016 are becoming a thing of history,’’ he said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, said that part of the efforts of the state government in the fight against insecurity was the procurement of 200 patrol vans for security agents in the state.

“Proceeds of kidnappings were destroyed; the governor had said he wasn’t going to negotiate with any criminal.

“You don’t negotiate with criminals, you deal with them. That is what the governor did and that should be an example to this nation,’’ Fanwo said.

In his goodwill message, Sen. Smart Adeyemi (APC-Kogi), urged the participants that when relating with politicians, they should try to be guided by social and professional responsibility.

“Social and professional responsibility are interwoven; they interlock, but there is still a thin line between the two.

“You cannot damn them (the social and professional responsibility). Our social responsibility on one hand and our professional responsibility to report things, but in doing that, we must get the facts right.’’

Adeyemi further said that for democracy to thrive in the country, there must be freedom of information.

“There cannot be press freedom when journalists are not paid, when there is no future in the profession.

“We can say there is press freedom when every journalist is proud of his profession because he can pay his bills and can live a decent, average life.’’

Kogi mourns death of Attah Igala

Kogi Government has described the death of Attah Igala, Michael Ameh Oboni, as shocking and a colossal loss to the state and Nigeria.

This is contained in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, in Lokoja on Sunday.

Fanwo stated that the late monarch ruled with great courage and with fear of God during his seven-year stay on the throne.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Oboni was, until his death in an Abuja hospital on Aug. 27, the Chairman of the state Council of Chiefs.

Fanwo stated that the late Attah was fiercely loyal to his people throughout his lifetime and used his throne to foster friendships and partnerships for his domain and for Kogi State.

“The late Attah of Igala was a great man indeed and often ahead of his time and institution in thinking and action.

“He believed that widespread penetration of electricity was key to achieving this objective.

“Fortunately, he found a willing partner in Gov. Yahaya Bello and lived to see ‘Project Light Up Kogi East’ (PLUKE), a project designed to expand electricity infrastructure into all the local government areas of his kingdom,’’ the statement said.

The commissioner hinted that the state government would soon immortalise the late monarch in a befitting manner.

“Government will continue to honour the memory of this pragmatic leader by sustaining rapid development as the bedrock of governance in Kogi State.

“His Royal Majesty, Michael Idakwo Ameh Oboni II will be sorely missed.

“We console his family, the great Igala people and all of Kogi State on this great and irreparable loss,’’ he stated.
