Ekiti speakership: HURIWA backs Afe Babalola, faults removal of Aribisogan

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), on Friday, faulted the removal of Gboyega Aribisogan as the Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly and his replacement by Olubunmi Adelugba.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, said political rascality endangers democracy and political gladiators in Ekiti should not be allowed to have their selfish and autocratic ways.

Hence, it advised Aribisogan to pursue legal steps to get his mandate restored lawfully just as the Rights group urged the Courts not to waste time in determining the matter should it be filed soon.

The group further backed the position of seven legal luminaries and Senior Advocates of Nigeria condemning Aribisogan’s removal as illegal and as one that didn’t follow due process.

They are Aare Afe Babalola, Chief Wole Olanipekun, Dele Adesina, Olu Daramola, Femi Falana, Dayo Akinlaja, and Gboyega Oyewole.

HURIWA further slammed the Ekiti State House of Assembly for insisting that the impeachment of Aribisogan was legal when it was clear that it was illegal as Aribisogan was not allowed to be in office for one day to commit any infraction as the cabal in the Assembly accused him.

Since the death of the former Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye on October 19, 2022, the Ekiti Assembly has been tossed into crisis with the election of Aribisogan on November 15, 2022.

The police in the state sealed off the complex the next day without Aribisogan’s consent or approval.

In a television interview on November 20, 2022, Aribisogan alerted the whole world that there were plans to either impeach him as the Speaker and mentioned former Governor Kayode Fayemi as the architect behind the troubles in the Assembly.

To the shock of the whole world, some lawmakers staged a kangaroo session on November 21, 2022, and announced an illegal removal of Aribisogan and replaced him with Adelugba.

Onwubiko said: “The political rascality going on in the Ekiti State House of Assembly is totally condemnable and illegal.

It should not be allowed to slide hence politicians will remove constitutionally installed Speakers at will because of personal vendetta and political witch-hunts.

“By their actions, members of the cabal in the Assembly have shown a penchant for political rascality, brazenness and recklessness that endanger democracy.

“Section 92 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), is clear that once elected by the members of the House, as in the case of Aribisogan, the Speaker shall continue to be in the office all through that particular House except removed from office by a resolution of the House of Assembly by the votes of not less than 2/3 majority of the Assembly.

“The cabal claimed that Aribisogan committed infractions but how does a Speaker whose Assembly Complex was shut a day after he was inaugurated commit an infraction?

    When did he commit it?

And was he given the opportunity to defend himself in line with the principle of fair hearing?

“HURIWA condemns this impeachment and backs the position of the prominent Ekiti senior lawyers because the constitutional steps that must necessarily be followed weren’t followed.

We admonish the genuinely elected speaker now purportedly ‘impeached’ to head to court immediately and take back his mandate.

Ekiti’s Gov. Oyebanji promises more recognition for women

Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti has promised to give adequate recognition and respect to womenfolk to move the state forward.

His spokesman, Mr Yinka Oyebode, stated at Ado-Ekiti on Sunday that Oyebanji made the promise when he visited the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen in Abuja on Friday.

He stated that the governor maintained that his administration would exceed the 35 per cent representation for women in elective and appointive positions, in line with the equal opportunity policy of the state.

He added that the meeting was part of the governor’s visit to federal ministries, departments, and agencies as well as to development partners.

He stated also that the governor told the minister that gender balance and women-related issues were part of his government’s working plans.

Oyebanji added that his administration had started well with the choice of a woman as the deputy governor and another as Secretary to the State Government.

He noted that women have the ability to see things far ahead and discern things much better than men.

The governor seized the opportunity of the visit to commend the achievements recorded in the area of women development by former Gov. Kayode Fayemi and his wife, Mrs Bisi Fayemi.

“The governor also promised to build on the records, especially in gender mainstreaming and affirmation,’’ the spokesman stated.

He added that in her response, the minister lauded Ekiti’s contributions in women-related issues particularly its Gender-Based Violence law, which she acknowledged had been quite effective in curbing domestic and sexual abuses.

The minister said Nigeria had earmarked about N3 billion for women projects and all states would benefit from the fund.

“I know you will continue the good work of your predecessor and do more.

“You already have a woman as deputy governor and a woman as Secretary to State Government.

That is a good way to start.

“Kwara has the record as the state with the highest number of women in government.

Try and surpass Kwara in this regard,’’ the minister told Gov. Oyebanji.

Ekiti’s Gov. Oyebanji promise to prioritise security, power, roads in 2023

Ekiti’s Gov. Oyebanji promise to prioritise security, power, roads in 2023 Meeting By Yinusa Ishola Ado-Ekiti, Oct. 22, Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti says the state’s 2023 budget will give consideration to promoting adequate security, power and good road network.

Oyebanji made the promise in Ikole, Ekiti South Senatorial District, during a citizens’ engagement meeting with delegates from the three senatorial districts of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting also took the governor to Ode in Ekiti North Senatorial District as well as Ado-Ekiti in Central Senatorial District.

Oyebanji said the recently launched 30-year-development plan of the state would be his working document to achieve all-round development.

He said the town hall meetings had become an “annual ritual’’ since the first administration of former Gov. Kayode Fayemi, to ensure community participation in budget preparation.

Oyebanji said his administration was irrevocably committed to participatory and all-inclusive government and budgeting.

According to him, the purpose of the meeting was to interact with the representatives of various towns and communities to articulate their needs for inclusion in the 2023 budget.

The governor noted that the requests of all the communities were similar, and assured that his administration would address their concerns about insecurity.

He also challenged the people on the need to assist security agencies in intelligence gathering by coming up with relevant information on suspicious movements or activities to enable the agencies to track down people with criminal tendencies.

“We should all be vigilant about what happens in our society.

“I agree we should step up our action on `Amotekun’ (the southwest regional security outfit) and strengthen it, but `Amotekun’ without intelligence is zero,’’ he said.

Oyebanji assured also that the various concerns of the people including electricity supply, potable water, rehabilitation of roads, and renovation of school buildings would be looked into.

He said his administration was already making efforts with relevant authorities to ensure that electricity supply is restored in areas that had been without power supply for years.

The governor said the administration would establish an Ombudsman office where people can supply government with useful information that would guide it in its decision-making process.

This, he said, was part of the efforts towards strengthening feedback mechanism from the people.

Oyebanji appealed for support to enable him to achieve the lofty goals.

“As a responsible government, we are of the firm belief that citizens’ participation in budgeting process enables ownership and efficient service delivery.

“It also gives meaning to the popular definition of democracy by Abraham Lincoln who described democracy as `government of the people, by the people and for the people’.

For us, we want to govern with the people and not for them.

“You will always be part of our decision-making and your voice will always be heard.

“This meeting is not only a personal commitment to participatory budgeting; it is also in conformity with the global best practices in budgeting.

“It is also one of the indicatory mileages of accountability requirements of the tripartite programme called: State Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) programme.

“Our annual budget preparation process shall be bottom-up, whereby the needs and interests of the people shall be articulated.

“The involvement of the citizens in budget preparation is geared towards effective utilisation of public funds based on the needs of the people,’’ he stressed.

The representatives of the communities comprising the traditional rulers and community leaders, after presenting their various demands, also commended the governor for sustaining the citizens’ engagement programme aimed at effective budgeting.

Afuye’s death devastating, huge loss to Body of Speakers – Obasa

Speaker of Lagos House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, has described the death of his Ekiti counterpart, Mr Oluwafunminiyi Afuye, as a huge loss to the body of speakers in Nigeria.

Obasa stated this in a condolence message issued on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Afuye died on Wednesday evening at Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) after being rushed there over reported cardiac-related issues.

NAN also reports that Afuye, represented Ikere I Constituency, was elected as speaker of the Sixth assembly in 2019.   He had, between 2010 and 2014, served as Commissioner for Information during the first term of former Gov. Kayode Fayemi.

Obasa said that the news of Afuye’s death was more devastating, knowing that he was reportedly active and showed no sign of any illness days before his demise at age 66.   He described the late speaker as a ‘fine gentleman’ whose experiences had contributed to the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy.

“The news of his death is more devastating because his state, Ekiti, just began a new dispensation; a change of baton requiring his experience as the head of the legislative arm of government.

“As a lawyer and former commissioner for information, Speaker Afuye understood his calling and served with dignity and respect.

“No doubt, he was loved by his people, just as he was loved by his colleagues.

“I have lost a dear friend, one who served humanity with passion.

He will be sorely missed,” he remarked.

Obasa commiserated with Afuye’s family, Ekiti government and the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, urging them to take solace in the fact that Afuye made positive contributions to the growth and development of his state.

“On behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I mourn the demise of this political leader.
