PDP, APC clash as Biden hails Buhari

Reactions have followed in the wake of President Joe Biden's praise of the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.), for deepening democracy in Nigeria.

In a meeting with the president of Nigeria and his counterparts from Sierra Leone, Gabon, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia, the US president praised Buhari for not only upholding democracy in Nigeria but throughout the African continent. .

Biden "praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts to deepen democracy not only in Nigeria but also in Africa," read a statement signed Thursday by the President's Principal Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Reacting to the development, Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council spokesman Charles Aniagwu said the praise is an indication Nigeria is on the right track.

“The PDP began the process of deepening democracy with electoral reforms. Fortunately, the President has continued this process. Don't forget that he also promised not to interfere in the 2023 elections, saying he would like to leave a legacy of free and credible elections to Nigeria.

“We are happy that for the first time the international community is seeing something good in Nigeria, but the PDP started that process,” he said.

However, African Action Alliance presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore said Biden was just being diplomatic with his guests.

“It’s called diplomatic, the kind of language or jargon that diplomats use, which is considered overly complicated, cautious or vague,” he said, adding that “the State Department’s annual reports have consistently cited (Major General) Buhari as an offender." from the human rights."

Sharing the same perspective, the national secretary of the Progressive Youth Party, Vidiyeno Bamaiyi, said that democracy gradually began to die when the current president took power.

Also speaking, the national president of the Grand Alliance of All Progressives, Victor Oye, said that the US president has the freedom to express himself as he sees fit.

However, in reaction, the spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, said that the opposition is always trying to get attention, even when it is not necessary.

Keyamo said: “What we know is that Biden congratulated Buhari, not the PDP. We are taking Biden's statement literally starting today. The PDP is just trying to doctor what the US President said and that is what we are sticking to.

“We all know that the worst elections in Nigerian history were held under the PDP. Jonathan did nothing extraordinary. He was defeated and left power. So what legacy are they talking about?

Joe Biden watches Morocco vs. France game with Weah, Buhari, Moroccan PM

President Muhammadu Buhari of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been spotted alongside Joe Biden and other world leaders, watching Morocco take on France in the 2022 World Cup.

World leaders had taken time off from their deliberations for the US-Africa leaders' summit to watch the world cup.

A photo shared by US President Joe Biden showed him in the company of President George Weah (Liberia) and Muhammadu Buhari (Nigeria).

Different angles of the photo from other sources on social media also showed Moroccan and Ethiopian Prime Ministers Abiy Ahmed and Aziz Akhannouch also watching the game.

In a social media post, President Biden praised the Moroccan team saying he was proud of their performance despite their 2-0 loss.

Plenty of praise continues to pour in for the Lions.

Morocco has broken a glass ceiling by becoming the only African or Arab country to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.

The very serious newspaper L'Economiste agrees: "The arrival of the Atlas Lions to the quarterfinals of a World Cup, the first for an African team, is experienced as a starting point and not as an achievement.

The trajectory of Achraf Hakimi and his teammates throughout the competition in Qatar earned them an entry "into the pantheon of football," the French newspaper notes.

Rarely done on social networks, this beautiful Moroccan team is unanimous, in the midst of debates on arbitration judged unfavorable to the Lions.

“The sadness of losing should not make us forget the happiness we have experienced,” said one user.

Another wrote: "Thank you for the desire, the sacrifices and the desire to fight for the shirt. Thank you for the emotions, the shouts of joy and the scenes of jubilation. And thank you for restoring faith and smile to a people who needed it desperately".

Beyond that, "for the millions who watched the semi-final (...), it felt like the last showdown, yet players from both teams fought valiantly, comforted each other and supported each other morally, giving hope for change." radical ... in international relations between the former colonies and their European nemesis," said the American cultural publication The Markaz Review.

The Moroccan odyssey is not quite over. The Atlas Lions will play the "small final" against Croatia on Saturday to reach the podium.

Brittney Griner returns home to US after Russian prisoner swap – The Sun Nigeria

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Brittney Griner returned to the United States early Friday, nearly 10 months after the basketball star's arrest in Russia made her the highest-profile American jailed abroad and sparked a political firestorm. .

Griner's status as an openly gay black woman, her prominence in women's basketball and her imprisonment in a country where authorities have been hostile to the LBGTQ community raised concerns for her and brought attention to the case. The Russian invasion of the Ukraine after her arrest further complicated matters.

The deal announced Thursday that saw Griner traded for notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout achieved a major goal for President Joe Biden. But the United States failed to win the freedom of another American, Paul Whelan, who has been jailed for nearly four years.

Biden's authorization to release Bout, the Russian criminal once nicknamed "the merchant of death," underscored the great urgency his administration faced in bringing Griner home, particularly after the recent resolution of his criminal case on charges of drugs and his subsequent transfer to a prison. Suburb.

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and professional basketball star Phoenix Mercury, was seen getting off a plane that landed Friday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.

“Very happy to have Brittney back on American soil. Welcome home BG!” tweeted Roger Carstens, the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs.

The WNBA star, who also played professional basketball in Russia, was arrested at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport in February after Russian authorities said she was carrying vape canisters filled with cannabis oil. The US State Department stated that Griner was "wrongfully detained," a charge that Russia has strongly rejected.

Griner pleaded guilty in July but still faced trial because admitting guilt in Russia's court system does not automatically end a case. She was sentenced to nine years.

He admitted in court that he possessed canisters of cannabis oil, but said he had no criminal intent and accidentally packed them. His defense team submitted written statements that he had been prescribed cannabis to treat pain.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the exchange on Thursday, saying in a statement carried by Russian news agencies that the exchange took place in Abu Dhabi and that Bout had returned home.

Biden spoke to Griner on the phone. US officials said they would offer him specialized medical services and advice.

By freeing Bout, the United States freed a former Soviet Army lieutenant colonel whom the Justice Department once described as one of the world's most prolific arms dealers. He was arrested in Thailand in 2008 and extradited to the United States in 2010.

Bout was serving a 25-year sentence on charges of conspiring to sell tens of millions of dollars worth of weapons that US officials said would be used against Americans.

Elon Musk and Matt Taibbi Post Twitter Documents About Hunter Biden Tapes

WASHINGTON — Elon Musk promoted a series of tweets Friday showing that Twitter executives had trouble handling tweets related to a report on Hunter Biden's laptop ahead of the 2020 presidential election, as the company took steps to block it.

"This is going to be amazing," Twitter CEO Musk wrote ahead of the release of what he called "The Twitter Files," a lengthy Twitter thread by journalist Matt Taibbi detailing internal documents Musk apparently gave Taibbi.

Musk, who last month urged his supporters to vote Republican, seemed to push the material to expose what he says is the political left's hold on Big Tech.

Taibbi said she had to "accept certain conditions" to report the story, but did not disclose what they were. USA TODAY was unable to verify the authenticity of the email screenshots and other documents that make up the bulk of Taibbi's reporting. The White House declined to comment.

The emails center on the debate within Twitter over whether censoring tweets promoting a 2020 New York Post story on Hunter Biden's laptop was the right move. The Post story provided confidential information that news organizations, including USA TODAY, could not verify at the time.

Biden, his allies and former intelligence officials said the story was likely Russian disinformation. However, then-Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said the emails addressed to the young Biden were not connected, even as federal authorities continued to review whether the material was part of such a campaign.

According to Taibbi, Twitter blocked tweets from former Trump administration officials publicizing the article, prompting them to contact and reprimand the company for its actions. Meanwhile, members of the Biden campaign reported specific tweets to Twitter and requested that they be blocked.

USA TODAY has since verified the content of the tweets reported by the Biden campaign through open access tools and found that they were pornographic in nature or alluded to Hunter Biden's sexual activities.

Here's what the docs show and what they don't:

Biden Campaign Flagged Tweets Ahead of Election Taibbi's report reveals requests from President Joe Biden's campaign in the days leading up to the 2020 election for Twitter to remove tweets the campaign flagged. An email from a Twitter employee dated October 24, 2020 includes six links to tweets. “More to review from the Biden team,” the employee wrote. Another Twitter worker responded: "I handled this." Taibbi goes on to write: “Requests from both the Donald Trump White House and the Biden campaign were received and honored.” does not provide examples of tweets that the Trump team flagged on Twitter.

Elon Musk and Apple: Elon Musk says he met with Apple's Tim Cook, issue with Twitter 'resolved'

Facebook and Google censor conservatives: Trump and Republicans bet they claim they will rally the Republican base in 2022?

Taibbi argues that "this system was not balanced" because he says the majority of Twitter employees are Democrats. Making that case, she pointed to the Twitter team's significantly higher campaign contributions to Democrats over Republicans. Notably, Taibbi's report does not show the Biden campaign flagging the 2020 New York Post report that first revealed the existence of Hunter Biden's laptop. 'Caution required': Twitter debated what to do with the New York Post storyTwitter removed links to tweets linking to the story, marked them as 'unsafe' and blocked the ability to send the story in direct messages. The Twitter team said the footage from Hunter Biden's laptop was included in its "hacked materials policy." But some on Twitter expressed concern. “I am struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this as unsafe,” Trenton Kennedy, a Twitter communications officer, wrote in an email. Kennedy warned that the company says it is "waiting to understand" whether the New York Post story is the result of pirated material. "Can we honestly say that this is part of the policy?" asked Brandon Borrman, former vice president of global communications in an email. Jim Baker, Twitter's deputy general counsel, responded that "caution is warranted" because it is "reasonable to assume" that the materials reported in the story were hacked. A Democratic congressman, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., whose district includes Silicon Valley, approached a senior Twitter executive with concerns that the decision to block the story violated "First Amendment principles."

Fact check: Claims that Hunter Biden received $3.5 million from Russia are unproven, lacking context

'A Twitter circus show,' analysts say

Since his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in late October, Musk has been trying to find a way to attract more money.

In November, Twitter briefly offered verified checks through an $8-a-month "Twitter Blue" subscription and has discussed other ways to attract advertisers, such as relaunching the short video platform Vine. Musk has also eviscerated staff through mass layoffs.

The financial pressures come after Musk saddled Twitter with $13 billion in debt to finance the deal, meaning the company must pay more than $1 billion a year in interest alone, the New York Times reported.

Neuralink: Elon Musk's Neuralink wants people to control computers with their minds. How close are they?

Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives calls Taibbi's Twitter thread a "Twitter circus show," with Musk using his new ownership and showmanship to create as much political noise as possible to generate engagement on the Internet. platform that has sunk in recent years.

“At the end of the day, there are 44 billion reasons why Musk needs to increase engagement on Twitter. This will be the most overpaid M&A transaction in the history of technology, and I think Musk realizes the challenges ahead."

Jared Holt, resident fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensics Research Lab, wrote that it is common practice for political campaigns to complain to social media companies and that Taibbi offered no evidence that Twitter gave special treatment to the Biden campaign. “We already know that major social media companies internally debate their moderation policies and are inconsistent with the enforcement of their decisions,” he wrote. “So what exactly is new in Taibbi's revelations? He wouldn't discuss almost anything, until now."

Musk's political views shift to the right

Musk's push to bring the Biden story back into the spotlight comes after the billionaire has shown signs of aligning himself more closely with the political right.

On November 7, Musk tweeted a recommendation to vote for a Republican Congress in the midterms, "since the presidency is a Democrat." He went on to say that he agrees "with some of the Democratic and Republican policies, but not all."

In a November 25 tweet, Musk confirmed that he would support Ron DeSantis, a Republican, in 2024. In May, he acknowledged that he had previously voted Democrat but now believed it was "the party of division and hate."

Twitter has also invited right-wing accounts to return to the platform under Musk, including former President Donald Trump. Trump was later banned from the platform in January 2021 due to risks that he would incite further violence following the January 6 attack on the capitol by his supporters.

What the politicians are saying and what could be next Republicans seized on the footage as evidence that Twitter tried to cover up a story unfavorable to Biden ahead of the election. “We are learning in real time how Twitter colluded to silence the truth about Hunter Biden's laptop just days before the 2020 presidential election,” said House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy. He promised that Republicans "will get answers for the American people" when they take control of the House next year. Democrats said there was no story. "Here's the BIG REVEAL," said US Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif. “Twitter received complaints from many people, including the Biden campaign, the Trump White House and your cousin's friend. Sometimes Twitter would listen and sometimes not."

White House says Biden has no intention of talking to Putin

The White House said US President Joe Biden has "no intention" at this time to enter into negotiations with President Vladimir Putin over ending the war in Ukraine, a day after Biden appeared to make a conditional offer. to speak with his Russian counterpart.

"We're just not at a point now where talks appear to be a fruitful avenue to pursue at this time," White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Friday.

In a press conference on Thursday with French President Emmanuel Macron, Biden said: "I am prepared to speak to Mr Putin if there is in fact an interest in him deciding that he is looking for a way to end the war. He has not. done". that yet."

Biden's comments appeared to be a cautious diplomatic overture from the White House.

When asked about those comments on Friday, Kirby noted that Biden said Putin has not yet shown interest in speaking.

“Putin has shown absolutely no inclination to be interested in dialogue of any kind. In fact, quite the opposite," Kirby said.

“The president was not indicating at all that now is the time for talks. In fact, he has been consistent that only (Ukrainian) President Zelenskyy can determine if and when there will be a negotiated deal, and what the circumstances are around that deal. would be seen," Kirby said.

The Kremlin said on Friday that Putin is ready to negotiate with the West, as long as the West recognizes Russia's "new territories" taken from Ukraine.

In a statement, the Kremlin said the West must accept Putin's proclamation that the southern Kherson region and three other partially occupied regions of Ukraine now belong to Russia before talks can take place. The invasion of Russia has been condemned as illegal by most countries.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "The President of the Russian Federation has always been, is and remains open to negotiations to ensure our interests."

Also on Friday, Putin spoke by phone with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He is quoted as telling Putin that "there must be a diplomatic solution as quickly as possible, which includes the withdrawal of Russian troops."

For his part, Putin accused "Western states, including Germany" of making it possible for kyiv to refuse to negotiate with Russia.

"Attention was drawn to the destructive line of Western states, including Germany, which are injecting weapons into the Kiev regime and training the Ukrainian army," the Kremlin said.

An aircraft that was destroyed during fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces is seen at the Kherson International Airport in Kherson, Ukraine, December 2, 2022.

In a written statement, Scholz's spokesman said that "the chancellor in particular condemned Russian airstrikes against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine and stressed Germany's determination to support Ukraine by ensuring its defense capability against Russian aggression."

Speculation about negotiations to end the war has grown as Moscow's military advances in Ukraine have stalled and, in some cases, been reversed. Russian missile attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have left millions of Ukrainians without electricity, heat and water as winter approaches.

President Biden has not spoken to Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine. Last March, Biden called Putin "a war criminal."

On Thursday, France announced its support for the creation of a special court to try those accused of committing war crimes in Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it was "outraged" by France's position.

"We demand that French diplomats, who are so attentive to human rights issues, do not divide people into 'right' and 'wrong', 'ours' and 'not ours'," the Foreign Ministry said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the EU will try to establish a specialized court, backed by the United Nations, to investigate and prosecute possible war crimes committed by Russia during its invasion.

Russia has denied targeting civilians and other war crimes.

UN-appointed investigators are examining whether Russia's attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, leaving millions without heat as temperatures plummet, amount to war crimes, a member of the inspection team said on Friday.

Fierce fighting continued on Friday in Ukraine's Lugansk and Donetsk regions, where the Ukrainian military said it fought off wave after wave of Russian attacks.

kyiv said Russian troops attacked Ukrainian positions in 14 settlements, while carrying out 30 airstrikes and 35 multiple rocket attacks on civilian areas.

Reports from the battlefield could not be independently verified.

Biden meets with top US lawmakers in a lame duck session

    - US President Joe Biden met with top lawmakers in Congress on Tuesday to discuss the agenda in the lame duck session on Capitol Hill.

The White House meeting included Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Their talks came amid the threat of a nationwide freight strike as a labor deal has divided members of two of the country's biggest rail unions.

The politicians "discussed how Congress can act to prevent a rail shutdown, which would have devastating consequences for workers, families and our economy," according to a White House reading.

Without the freight train, many American industries would shut down, Biden said in a statement released Monday.

“Up to 765,000 Americans, many union workers, could be out of a job in the first two weeks alone,” the statement read. "Communities could lose access to the chemicals needed to ensure clean drinking water. Farms and ranches across the country may not be able to feed their livestock."

Pelosi later said the House of Representatives would take up legislation this week to adopt a tentative agreement between rail workers and operators.

On Tuesday, Biden and the leaders of the US Congress also discussed how to maintain government funding, resources to fight COVID-19 and aid to Ukraine, the White House said.

McCarthy, who is seeking to be elected speaker of the House of Representatives next term, told reporters Tuesday that Republicans will prioritize border security and cutting spending, among other things.

Republicans flipped the House in this year's midterm elections, while Democrats retained their majority in the Senate for the next Congress, which will meet for the first time on January 3, 2023. ■
