PDP will definitely produce Nigeria’s next President – Ayu

Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman Iyorchia Ayu urged Nigerians to keep faith in the party and said he is ready to produce the nation's next president.

Ayu gave the assurance Sunday in Port Harcourt at Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers' gala night for PDP governors.

Mr. Ayu, in a statement released to reporters by Kelvin Ebiri, Mr. Wike's Special Assistant for Media, argued that the current APC-led leadership has to change.

The national chairman of the DPP accused the APC leaders of failing to harness the rich diversity of Nigerians for better fortunes that should strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and promote peaceful coexistence.

“We must change this narrative and the only way to change this narrative and take advantage of not only the culture but also the environment and the wealth that it contains is to support the PDP that is determined to produce new leadership for this country,” he said.

Mr. Ayu also said that Nigeria would recover with the PDP in the saddle because the project of rescuing the country and making it great was feasible.

He said the party would provide leadership that would bring people together nationally.

"The PDP will definitely produce the next president and take the country back to the days when we were in power, when we paid off all foreign debts, when we were developing this country at a reasonable speed," he said.

Earlier in his speech, Wike said the gala night event was an addition to the regular rotating meeting of PDP governors.

He said the meetings had always been used to discuss high-profile issues related to economics, politics and others that bordered on the blueprint for a virile Nigerian society.

For his part, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Sokoto Governor Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal said that the PDP governors and other party leaders were already working in synergy to rebuild the party.

Tambuwal said the focus was on rescuing Nigeria, which will also require all Nigerians of goodwill to join forces with the PDP to achieve that goal.

“I call on and plead with all Nigerians, including those in APC who are patriotic enough, to join us as we continue to march together to the rescue of Nigeria,” he said.

The governors who were present at the gala night were Governor Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Mohammed Bala (Bauchi), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Ifeanyi. Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

Also in attendance were the Lieutenant Governors of Rivers and Zamfara, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo and Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau; PDP National Secretary Senator Sam Anyanwu and other dignitaries.
