Nigeria@60: We’ve so much to celebrate, says Gombe Governor

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State says there is so much to celebrate because Nigeria has remained united, in spite of the challenges confronting the country.

Yahaya said this in a message to mark the 62nd Independence of Nigeria and the 26th anniversary of the creation of Gombe state.

The statement was signed by Alhaji Ismaila Misili, the Director-General, Press Affairs, Government House, and made available to newsmen on Friday in Gombe.

“Inspite challenges, there is so much to celebrate, particularly the fact that we are still together as an entity and hopeful that the lofty height of greatness we covet is still within our reach to accomplish,” he declared.

The governor therefore urged citizens not to despair, but to keep hope alive in the quest to build a prosperous state and nation “as envisioned by our founding fathers”.

Yahaya noted that though Nigeria is passing through tough times occasioned by insecurity and the socio-economic effect of the war in Ukraine, among others, the challenges confronting the nation were not insurmountable.

He urged the people of Gombe state and Nigerians in general to rekindle their hopes and renew their commitment and love for the country.

“As the country celebrates its 62nd independence anniversary, all hands must be on deck to foster unity, peace, security and understanding, regardless of our differences.

” Underscoring the importance attached to the twin celebration, Yahaya said “for us in Gombe State, it is a double celebration: we are marking the 62nd independence as a nation and the 26th year anniversary of the creation of our drear state”.

He reassured that under his leadership, the state would continue to wax stronger in all facets of human endeavours, vowing to keep initiating people-oriented policies and programmes that would better the lots of the people and the state.

As the campaigns for the 2023 elections begin in earnest, Yahaya enjoined the people of the state to continue to play their role in deepening democracy by actively participating in the electoral process.

While rejoicing with President Muhammadu Buhari and the entire nation on the auspicious occasion, the governor said that the celebration was an opportunity to continue to sustain the legacies of our heroes past.

The exercise tagged: “Nationwide Free Vaccination against Dog-mediated Human Rabies,” is part of activities to mark the 2022 World Rabies Day. The theme of this year’s commemoration is “One Health, Zero Death”.

Nephrologists advocates free treatment to curb chronic paediatric kidney disease

The Nigerian Association of Nephrology Nurses has advocated free medicare services to stem chronic paediatric renal diseases in the country.

Mrs Ajibuke Omolola, National Chairman of the association, made the call during the inauguration of its 15th Annual Scientific Conference, on Tuesday in Gombe.

The theme of the conference is: “Modern Trend in Nephrology Nursing”.

She said that kidney disease cases were rampant, especially among children in the country.

“It has been giving us a sleepless night in trying to know the causes, how to prevent it and how to provide standard treatment to the condition of the children,” she said.

She, therefore, urged government at all levels to provide free dialysis for the patients, to enhance case management and treatment of the disease.

“Today, many patients can’t afford dialysis due to the economic situation.

“Patient with kidney disease, must have a specific number of dialysis in a week and the amount of the renal therapy increases daily,” she said.

The Nephrologist also advocated inclusion of kidney treatment into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), adding that the gesture would assist the indigent patients and enhance treatment of the disease.

In his remarks, Dr Habu Dahiru, the state Commissioner for Health, described the theme of the conference as apt and timely considering the effects of COVID-19 pandemic that exposed the deficiency in the health sector.

He urged the participants to deliberate and come up with modalities towards improving healthcare service delivery in the country.

He said the state government had established modern dialysis unit at the Gombe Specialist Hospital and trained five Nephrology nurses to ensure effective management of the facility.

The commissioner said that dialysis machines had been provided at the General Hospital Kaltungo and General Hospital Kumo, to augment the ones at the Gombe Specialist Hospital.

Acoording to him, the state government has also embarked on construction of College of Nursing and Midwifery, adding that the school was designed to accomodate about 600 students population.

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya tasked the association to scale up sensitisation activities to create awareness on causes, symptoms and preventive tips of renal disease.

Represented by his deputy, Manassah Jatau, Yahaya reiterated commitment to enhance quality healthcare service delivery in the state.
