Alleged perjury: Court dismisses APP’s application, adjourns suit against Matawalle

The Federal High Court sitting in Gusau on Thursday dismissed the application brought by Action People’s Party (APP) seeking to be joined in the alleged perjury suit against Gov. Bello Matawalle.

Justice Aminu Bappa-Aliyu dismissed  the application for lack of merit and adjourned to Nov. 7, 2022 for hearing of the substantive suit.

Mr Usman Ndaliman, Counsel to the APP on Oct. 27, brought the application seeking to be joined as third claimant in the substantive suit.

The Northern Youth Assembly and one Mannir Haidara had initiated the suit as first and second claimants in the suit.

In the substantive suit, the plaintiffs claimed that there were discrepancies in the academic and birth certificates Matawalle presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest in the 2023 governorship election.

The case, earlier filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, was transferred to the Federal High Court Gusau, and was listed for mention on Oct. 4, and adjourned to Oct.19, for further mention.

When the case came up on Oct. 19,  the judge again, adjourned the matter to Oct. 27, for definite hearing.

At the resumed hearing on Oct. 27,  the APP counsel drew the attention of the court to an application filed by his client seeking to be joined in the suit as claimant.

Ndaliman said his motion followed an application dated Oct. 20 and filed Oct. 21, before the court.

He said that the APP’s application was accompanied by an affidavit and a written address.

Counsel to Matawalle and three other respondents, acknowledged that they had been served with copies of the application.

The other respondents include All Progressives Congress (APC), it’s Zamfara state chairman, Alhaji Tukur Danfulani and INEC.

The counsel did not object to the application, and the court, therefore adjourned to Monday, Oct. 31 to rule on the APP’s application, which was shifted to Thursday, Nov. 3. However, counsel to Matawalle, Ahmed Raji, SAN, filed a motion of preliminary objection on the matter.

He said that the “plaintiffs were not known to law” as they were not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission as required by law.

The documents provided by the plaintiffs contained in suit number 272022, claimed there were three different dates of birth submitted on three occasions to INEC by Matawalle between 2015 and 2022. The petitioners claimed that the documents Matawalle presented to INEC for the 2015, 2019 and 2023 elections regarding his secondary school qualifications were also not the same.

They prayed the court to declare a case of perjury and non-possession of valid minimum secondary school certificate against the Zamfara governor.

However,  Bappa-Aliyu dismissed the APP application, saying however that the party was capable of instituting a fresh suit against the defendants without prejudice.

He adjourned the case to Nov. 7, for definite hearing.

Census: NPC demarcates 3,230 localities in Zamfara, says Commissioner

The National Population Commission (NPC) has demarcated 3,230 localities to be included in the “Compendium of Localities”for the success of the 2023 population and housing census.

NPC Federal Commissioner for Zamfara, Alhaji Muhammad Mutta-Rini stated this on Monday at a two-day “State Level Compendium of Localities” workshop in Gusau, Zamfara.

The workshop is organised to finalise work on the list of the localities identified during the commission’s  Enumeration Area Demarcation(EAD) in the state.

The final list of localities of EAD would form part of the compendium to guide the 2023 National Population and Housing Census.

Muttaka-Rini said that participants drawn from various sectors would compile the localities identified during the EAD exercise.

He said the list would identify the localities base on local government areas: “showing  coverage and location of each locality on the  interactive maps.

” “The compendium of locality in census taking is a tool for census data dissemination as well as for national planning and development.

” The 2023 population and housing census results will be released up to the locality level,” the commissioner said.

He, therefore, sought the support of stakeholders, especially the state and local governments, traditional and religious leaders, the media as well as security agencies for the success of the exercise.

Muttaka-Rini commended the stakeholders for their support during the EAD exercise where 3,230 localities were demarcated in the state.

“The commission especially commends the state government, local government authorities, traditional institutions, the media, and other stakeholders for their support during the Enumeration Area Demarcation and efforts to deliver more data for the locality level,” he said.

Earlier, the Zamfara Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Kabiru Gayari assured the commission of government commitment to support the exercise.

Gayari said that the compendium would be of great use to the state in the area of planning and effective service delivery.

The official said the compendium would assist the government in its effort to roll out a 20-year development plan for the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the commission during the event presented soft and hard copies of the locality list to the 14 local government chairmen.

NAN also reports that that the compendium of localities would be presented to President Muhammadu Buhari before the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

Alleged perjury: Court adjourns suit against Matawalle to Oct. 31

The Federal High Court sitting in Gusau on Thursday adjourned to Oct. 31, the suit filed by Northern Youth Assembly, accusing Gov. Bello Matawalle of perjury.

Justice Aminu Bappa-Aliyu adjourned the case to enable the court rule on the application of the Action People’s Party (APP) seeking to be joined as third claimant in the substantive suit.

In the substantive suit, the plaintiffs claimed that there were discrepancies in the academic and birth certificates Matawalle presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest in the 2023 poll.

The case, earlier filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, was transferred to the Federal High Court in Gusau.

It was listed for mention on Oct. 4, and adjourned to Oct. 19, for further mention.

When the case came up on Oct 19,  the judge again, adjourned the matter to Oct. 27, for definite hearing.

At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Mr Usman Ndaliman, Counsel to the APP drew the attention of the court to an application filed by his client seeking to be joined in the suit as claimant.

Nadaliman said his motion followed an application dated Oct. 20 and filed Oct. 21, before the court.

He said that the APP’s application was accompanied by an affidavit and a written address.

Counsel to Matawalle and three other respondents, acknowledged that they had been served with copies of the application.

The counsel did not object to the application, and the court, therefore adjourned to Monday, Oct. 31 to rule on the APP’s application.

Counsel to the first respondent, Matawalle, Ahmed Raji, SAN, however, told the court that he had filed a motion of  preliminary objection on the matter.
