Matawalle swears in six new permanent secretaries, others

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has sworn in six new permanent secretaries to fill some vacancies in the leadership of the state civil service.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Jamilu Iliyasu, Press Secretary to the Governor, on Friday in Gusau.

Matawalle also swore in four newly- appointed Special Advisers and State Auditor-General for Local Governments.

Others included Chairmen and Permanent Commissioners of the State House of Assembly Service Commission and Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC).

Speaking at the inauguration at the Government House, Matawalle urged the appointees to deploy their wealth of experience and expertise in ensuring the proper implementation of government policies and programmes.

He reminded the Permanent Secretaries of their role in the general administration of the respective Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) they may find themselves.

He said the success or otherwise of the MDAs to carry out the mandate rested on the officials.

He, therefore, urged the permanent secretaries to stick to the provisions of the civil service rules and ensure zero tolerance to laxity, corruption and indiscipline.

The governor said that his administration would not tolerate any compromise and disregard for the principles of due process and rule of law.

He urged the Special Advisers to see their appointments as a form of trust from the government and goodwill from the people of the state.

Matawalle, therefore, urged them to live above board in the discharge of their responsibilities so as to justify the confidence reposed in them.

The governor urged them to complement the state executive council in fashioning out efficient policies and programmes to accelerate the development of the state.

Speaking to the new chairmen and permanent commissioners of the State House of Assembly Service Commission and ZASIEC, Matawalle drew their attention to the sensitivity of their commissions and urged them to discharge their duties diligently.

Matawalle also reminded the newly- appointed Auditor-General for Local Governments that Zamfara had established the Bureau for Public Procurement and was implementing the global accounting system of IPSAS.

He urged the Auditor-General to ensure that no individual or organisation violated the guiding accounting principles and practices of the state.

The governor assured the people of the state of his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment to promote development.

He appealed to all political appointees, civil servants, and people of Zamfara to pray and support the government in achieving lasting peace in the state.

The governor also urged the people to pray for the success of security forces as they battle across various theatres to restore law and order in the state.

She said she left PDP due to lack of leadership style.

“I announce my defection to the APC together with women leaders of the PDP in the 14 local government areas of the state,’’ she said.

Responding, Matawalle described Shehu’s defection as a welcome development for the APC in the state.

“More defectors are coming to APC from PDP; very soon shall receive many PDP members including their leaders,’’ he said.

Also on Thursday, Matawalle hosted a popular political support group in the state, the “ Amalgamated Mobilisation Group’’ (MASAMOG).

The governor announced a donation of 17 vehicles to the group.

“Two buses are for the leadership of the group while another bus is donated to the women’s wing of the group.

“The 14 units of Peugeot 406 Wagon are donated to coordinators of the group in the 14 local government areas of the state,’’ he explained.

Matawalle pledged to continue to support the group, which he considered as one of the great achievements recorded as a result of APC stakeholders’ reconciliation in the state.

According to him, the reconciliation yielded positive result that all political stakeholders in the state are now united in one family under the APC.

He called on APC stakeholders, members and all supporters in the state to embrace unity, peace and stability for the victory of the party at the 2023 general elections.

Earlier, Chairman of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Danmaliki, described Gov. Matawalle and former Gov. Abdul’aziz Yari as strong pillars of the state.

He said the group was formed to cement the recent reconciliation of APC stakeholders in the state.

“We are working to ensure that the reconciliation leads to APC’s successes in the state at the 2023 general elections,’’ Danmaliki assured.

Alleged perjury: Court dismisses APP’s application, adjourns suit against Matawalle

The Federal High Court sitting in Gusau on Thursday dismissed the application brought by Action People’s Party (APP) seeking to be joined in the alleged perjury suit against Gov. Bello Matawalle.

Justice Aminu Bappa-Aliyu dismissed  the application for lack of merit and adjourned to Nov. 7, 2022 for hearing of the substantive suit.

Mr Usman Ndaliman, Counsel to the APP on Oct. 27, brought the application seeking to be joined as third claimant in the substantive suit.

The Northern Youth Assembly and one Mannir Haidara had initiated the suit as first and second claimants in the suit.

In the substantive suit, the plaintiffs claimed that there were discrepancies in the academic and birth certificates Matawalle presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest in the 2023 governorship election.

The case, earlier filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, was transferred to the Federal High Court Gusau, and was listed for mention on Oct. 4, and adjourned to Oct.19, for further mention.

When the case came up on Oct. 19,  the judge again, adjourned the matter to Oct. 27, for definite hearing.

At the resumed hearing on Oct. 27,  the APP counsel drew the attention of the court to an application filed by his client seeking to be joined in the suit as claimant.

Ndaliman said his motion followed an application dated Oct. 20 and filed Oct. 21, before the court.

He said that the APP’s application was accompanied by an affidavit and a written address.

Counsel to Matawalle and three other respondents, acknowledged that they had been served with copies of the application.

The other respondents include All Progressives Congress (APC), it’s Zamfara state chairman, Alhaji Tukur Danfulani and INEC.

The counsel did not object to the application, and the court, therefore adjourned to Monday, Oct. 31 to rule on the APP’s application, which was shifted to Thursday, Nov. 3. However, counsel to Matawalle, Ahmed Raji, SAN, filed a motion of preliminary objection on the matter.

He said that the “plaintiffs were not known to law” as they were not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission as required by law.

The documents provided by the plaintiffs contained in suit number 272022, claimed there were three different dates of birth submitted on three occasions to INEC by Matawalle between 2015 and 2022. The petitioners claimed that the documents Matawalle presented to INEC for the 2015, 2019 and 2023 elections regarding his secondary school qualifications were also not the same.

They prayed the court to declare a case of perjury and non-possession of valid minimum secondary school certificate against the Zamfara governor.

However,  Bappa-Aliyu dismissed the APP application, saying however that the party was capable of instituting a fresh suit against the defendants without prejudice.

He adjourned the case to Nov. 7, for definite hearing.
