Reclaimed land not Saraki’s ancestral home – Kwara Govt

The Kwara Government says the land reclaimed from the Saraki Family was not its ancestral home.

Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq disclosed this in a statement in Ilorin on Thursday.

“The property being reclaimed by the state government is not Saraki’s ancestral home as being portrayed in some section of the media.

“The Saraki’s ancestral home is in Agbaji, while the property we are talking about is in the heart of Government Reserved Area (GRA), Ilorin.

“The government position is that the land was (and still is) a public property originally meant for the construction of a secretariat, a civil service clinic and parking lots.

“However, ownership of the property was spuriously transferred to a private firm and for commercial purpose without the firm paying a kobo to government or obtaining the Certificate of Occupancy,” Ajakaye said.

According to him, what the government has done was to reclaim the land in the spirit of what it was originally meant for.

Shedding more light, the state’s Commissioner for Communications, Alhaji Murtala Olanrewaju said government has already commenced physical reclamation of the land.

Olanrewaju said in a statement that the reclamation started in the early hours of Thursday to avoid needless confrontation.

“Attempts by some persons to provoke government’s agents on lawful duty were resisted by the security agents who exercised highest level of restraint and professionalism,” he said.

He said government was never served court papers on the matter as claimed by some people.

“We state that no court paper has been served as at the time the government took steps to preserve what lawfully belongs to the people,” he added.

Olanrewaju urged the people of the state to remain calm, peaceful and be guided only by facts of the matter.

He also advised the people not to be drawn into emotional outburst that was targeted at distracting the public from the issues at stake.

“While the administration is focused on restoring sanity to the state after years of barefaced impunity, we will do so within the limit of the law,” he said.

Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonsoki-Ojota highway project: 12 more months to go, says Fashola

Motorists will have to endure additional 12 months of nerve-breaking traffic on the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonsoki-Ojota highway for the rehabilitation of the road to be completed, according to the Federal Government.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that driving on the highway has been a huge nightmare for motorists since the reconstruction commenced on Nov. 17, 2018.

Similarly, there has been traffic lockdown in the Iganmu area of Lagos over the years. Joint efforts by the Lagos State Government and other agencies to tackle the problem has not yielded lasting solution.

Inspecting the rehabilitation of the highway on Sunday, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, announced that the project would be completed by the end of 2020.

Fashola, who inspected the project alongside the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said the Federal Government was committed to “speedy completion of the highway to provide a lasting solution to the problems of bad roads and gridlock’’.

He said the road reconstruction was creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs and at the same time, advancing commerce because of the local content going into the work.

Fashola explained that the project was creating wealth with thousands of trucks conveying iron rods, cement and other locally-sourced raw materials to sites where some 650 people were directly employed on various projects.

“Businesses have started coming back on Liverpool Road because the road closed earlier is now back. You will see more of that.

“All of the businesses that are shut on Creek Road will come back. We expect to see property redevelopment and property renewal once the road is completed.

“Once the economy of Apapa returns, all the clearing and forwarding, shipping, newspaper companies and all others doing business will resume fully and the economy will bounce back.’’

He commended the private public partnership scheme with Dangote, expected to execute road construction from the Nigerian Ports Authority through various areas to the old Toll Gate at Ojota, near Lagos.

The minister pointed out that section two of the project, which was not part of the original contract was already showing signs of failure, due to heavy traffic.

“We are at the Oshodi area now and one side has been concluded and opened to traffic and this is how we intend to continue to complete and open, until we finish the entire road.’’

He, however, appealed for understanding of road users as the roads go through curing process, saying that President Buhari’s mandate was to build long-lasting and enduring roads.

“We expect that by end of 2020 the entire road network will be finished, you will have a road that will last for 40 years.’’

Also speaking, Dangote lamented that the congestion at the ports, caused by gridlock had resulted to his group losing about N25 billion in accruable revenue from 2017 to the 2019 financial year.

He lauded the quality of work taking place on the road, saying that the development was reviving commerce in the Apapa area.

“This road will actually open up the economy. It will bring a lot of jobs and a lot of factories that have moved out will be able to move back.

“What I can also assure you is that this road will be finished before the end of next year.’’

He commended the cooperation of Apapa residents, noting that the development was responsible for the progress of the reconstruction.

He said that the N72.9 billion project would have 10 lanes, stretching from Apapa to the Toll Gate at Ojota.

Earlier, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Adedamola Kuti, lamented that some utilities in the right of way of the project around Apapa GRA were slowing down construction.

Kuti said that some sections of the road around Apapa GRA, Creek Road and Oshodi were being reinforced with 200mm concrete.

He disclosed that extra layers were also being put in place for durability, strength and leveling up with drainage levels to check flooding.

High operating costs, lack of basic infrastructure and frequent power failures are part of factors that have done serious damage to Nigeria’s economic development, often grinding its goldmine manufacturing sector and the services industries to a halt.

This, no doubt, has led to many factories shutting operations over the past years and increasing the number of unemployed population. Some surviving out of assiduousness have, in some cases, shed the number of their staff.

The Fast Food industries otherwise, referred to as the Quick Service Restaurants (QSR), are not left out in this trend as many of them, though in some cases, operating on franchise, are fast closing shops.

But amid the precarious business climate in the country, some enterprises have shown resilience, employing the art of continuity and proper planning to ensure they do not go bankrupt.

Over the years, with increase in population and changes in lifestyles of urban dwellers, many fast food outlets emerged.

While some have closed shop or operating skeletal services, many have also survived the harsh operating Nigerian business environment.

Among the survivors is “Sweet Sensation’’ which entered the fast food scene in 1994 and has since grown into a conglomerate, spreading its tentacles all over Lagos and Abeokuta.

Mrs Ayo Aninbaba and Mr Tunji Kamson both Executive Directors Sweet Sensation (Centre) and some Staff at its 25th Anniversary in Lagos.

Mr Tunji Kamson, one of its Executive Directors, advising Nigerian entrepreneurs on business survival tactics, said they should remain steadfast irrespective of financial difficulties.

“It is with doggedness that a food outlet succeeds, and that brings about the success story being celebrated at the 25th Anniversary of Sweet Sensation.

“From a humble beginning as a small cake shop and opening of a small food eatery around the corner, Sweet Sensation emerged to the size it is today.

“’Taking the first step is very important for a potential entrepreneur as well as moving upward toward achieving every set goals.

“If you take the first step, people will rally round you and support you and everything will fall into place,’’ he said.

Kamson said that Sweet Sensation was also happy with its customers, especially those that started with them from their small shop up till now.

He said all the customers, trade partners and vendors were all being celebrated and were held in high esteem.

“Sweet Sensation is known for being the first outlet to feature local cuisines on the menu such as Jollof rice and indigenous stews.

“The fast food chain is also the first to have an education scholarship scheme and `Feed the Hungry Programme’ as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

GOtv Boxing Night 20 brings WBF Heavyweight bout to Nigeria

The 20th edition of GOtv Boxing Night will be headlined by a World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental heavyweight title bout between US-based Nigerian, Onoriode “Godzilla” Ehwariemi, and Argentina’s Ariel “Chiquito” Baracamonte.

This was announced in Lagos on Thursday at a press conference addressed by the organisers, Flykite Productions.

The bout is one of the nine scheduled for the show slated to hold on Dec. 28 at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.

Jenkins Alumona, CEO of Flykite Productions, explained that the bout, which is the biggest to be staged on Nigerian soil in decades, is a part-fulfilment of the promise to host world-class bouts at the show.

Nigeria has not hosted a bout of this profile in decades. We made a promise to put Nigeria back on the global boxing map and we are happy to see the promise come to fruition.

We believe this bout provides an indication of the return to health of Nigerian boxing since GOtv launched an intervention to revive the sport which, long before 2014, was in coma,”Alumona said.

He added that the nine-bout event will also feature live musical performances by Zlatan Ibile, Mayorkun and Oritsefemi among others.

In addition to the headline clash, fights lined up include the West African Boxing Union (WABU) lightweight title defence by Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu, who takes on Ghana’s Ezekiel Anan.

WABU welterweight title defence by Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde against Ghana’s Sanitor Agbenyo.

National featherweight challenge clash between Taiwo “Esepo” Agbaje and Olusegun Moses; as well as national super featherweight duel between Ridwan “Scorpion” Oyekola and Sikiru “Omo Iya Eleja” Shogbesan.

Also in action are Adewale “Masevex” Masebinu, who takes on Olanrewaju Segun; and Adeyemi “Sense” Opeyemi, who fights Sadiq Adeleke.

Alaba Omotola takes on Bolaji Abdullahi; and rising female ring artist, Cynthia “Boby Girl” Ogunsemilore faces Aminat Yekini.

The best boxer at the show will win a cash prize of N1million attached to the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that Mr Felix Ofulue, Head, Corporate Communications, IE, made the disclosure at a news briefing in Ikeja.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had on April 5 directed all electricity distribution companies to start distribution of prepaid meters under the MAP scheme.
