Zamfara govt recruits 4,200 Community Protection Guards

The Zamfara government says that peace is gradually returning to the state despite the activities of unpatriotic businessmen from the conflict in the state.

Conflict entrepreneurs are a group or individuals who promote conflict for profit.

This was revealed at a joint press conference in Kaduna on Sunday, State Information Commissioner Ibrahim Dosara and Security and Internal Affairs Commissioner, retired DIG Mamman Ibrahim Tsafe, on the state of affairs in Zamfara.

They said that as part of the measures, the state government has recruited 4,200 Community Protection Guards (CPG), comprising former military men, volunteer men and other patriotic citizens.

The commissioners said that the CPG will support state security operations to confront the bandits in their enclaves, with a view to reducing their threat.

“It may interest you, journalists, to note that these 4,200 GPCs have already started basic training and are now collaborating with the security operatives that are pursuing the bandits,” they said.

According to them, despite the activities of the unpatriotic businessmen of the conflict, the state of Zamfara would soon regain its lost glory as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria.

“Unknown to many Nigerians, bandits aside, there are some unpatriotic politicians and conflict businessmen bent on sabotaging the peace process out of their selfish desire for power or deterring the successes of the Zamfara state governor and his citizenry.

“We wish to announce that, Insha Allah, the state of Zamfara will soon regain its lost glory as one of the most peaceful states in the federation.

“You may also be interested to note that there is relative peace in almost all parts of the upstate, with a few skirmishes here and there. It is my belief that being 100 percent successful in making a state free of crime will never be a one-day affair,” the commissioners said.

According to the commissioners, the government and people of Zamfara today are very hopeful with the gradual return of peace to their communities.

“To back up this claim, the Zamfara state government recently hosted a gigantic crowd in Gusau, the state capital, from inside and outside the state who came and lived in Gusau for a week without a single act of banditry against our visitors. .

"Interestingly, not a single visitor bothered on their way back or back to their destinations," they added.

Polo: Guards Polo Club to get N500m ultramodern club house – BoT Chair

Nasiru Dano, the Chairman, Lubrik Construction Co. (LCC) Ltd. has said that the company will soon embark on the construction of a befitting N500 million ultramodern club house for the Guards Polo Club (GPC), Abuja, as part of its commitment to give back to the society.

The project, according to Dano, who also doubles as the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Army Polo Association (NAPA) said the gesture was part of LCC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and commitment to continue to support the Nigerian Army.

“Beyond the Guards Polo Club in Abuja, we have also supported almost six or seven different polo clubs in the country.

“So, we are looking at between 8 -12 months to complete the building and finishing of a world class club house here at the Guards polo club,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the ground breaking ceremony for the proposed club house was held on the side lines of the ongoing Nigeria National Carnival Polo tournament at the club on Sunday.

Maj. Gen. Haruna Momoh, the Deputy Chief of Policy and Plans/Director Staff duties at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, who represented the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Tukur Buratai and performed the ceremony, described the project as ‘a legacy that will stand the test of time.’

Momoh expressed gratitude to LCC for their support and commitment, saying, “On behalf of the COAS, officers and men of the Nigerian Army, I want to thank LCC most graciously for choosing to embark on this great project.

“This indeed is a legacy that will remain in our memory for a long time to come. We look forward to the manifestation of greater things and partnerships in the years ahead,” he said.

Chairman of Guards Polo Club, Amb. Sani Bala expressed gratitude to the company, saying that it was a great milestone for the club.

“We are very delighted that the appeals we have been making to well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies alike to support the game of polo are yielding fantastic results.

The chairman also revealed that plans were underway to bring about more developments in the club within the shortest possible time.

“There are a lot of developments coming through. In addition to the new club house, we intend to have at least one or two more polo pitches so as not to put too much pressure on the existing one.

“This is something that is going to happen with the collaboration and assistance of the NAPA.

“We are very grateful to Gen. M.S. Aliyu who has been giving the push for the Nigerian Army to really participate fully in the game of polo,” he said.

According to the chairman, there would be other recreational and sporting facilities in the club, such as squash and tennis courts, as well as a playing area for kids and a polo school to teach young players and organise a lot of other grassroots programmes.

“The game of polo requires skill and horsemanship and, therefore, one must have drive and passion to learn the basic rules and rudiments of the sport,” he said.

Sexual violence: Reluctance to report cases major hindrance – group

A women advocacy group, Girls Pride Circle (GPC), on Sunday called for collective effort to stop sexual violence through reporting of cases and effective law enforcement.

The Executive Director of  GPC,  Mrs Olaoluwa Abagun, told the Nigeria News Agency in Lagos that many cases of sexual violence were not reported because of fear of  being stigmatised.

She also said that many victims of rape were afraid of exposing perpetrators because of their  (victims’) young ages and threats from the culprits.

“All mothers, grandmothers, aunties, teachers and friends who hide sexual violence are as bad as rapists.

“When we conceal the perpetrators, we shall be encouraging the menace instead of ending it,” she said.

Abagun, a lawyer, told NAN that her group had trained over 270 victims of sexual violence.

She said that the group had also offered legal aid to victims, adding that it educated some school children on how to prevent falling victims.

“Sexual violence perpetrators are usually close relations and neighbours that use several means to lure their victims.

“The challenge is to find means to make these victims speak out and expose the perpetrators because they threaten the innocent victims who are scared of exposing them,” she told NAN.

Abagun regretted that many children were abused before age 15.

“Some believe that bad dressing by girls contributed to sex violence; this is not true.

“The victims of between two years and seven years, what bad dressing are they guilty of?

“We must clamp down on these rapists and put away their flimsy excuses.

“The best time to achieve it is now,” she said.

She called on the police and judiciary to properly prosecute and punish offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

NAN reports  that Abagun produced a 10-minute documentary on  sexual violence in which some victims narrated their ordeals, how they got trapped and how difficult it was for them to open up.

Slain ex-Yemeni president Saleh buried without solemnities – Reports

Former Yemeni President Ali Saleh, who was killed by the Houthi rebels, was buried on Wednesday without great solemnities, media reported.

On Monday, an official from Saleh’s party, the General People’s Congress (GPC), confirmed reports that the former president was killed by the Houthis.

Media reported that the Houthis had made a condition that the body of the politician could be given to his family only if his burial was attended only by his family.

However, a spokesman of the Houthi movement told Sputnik that such a condition had not been announced.

Saleh was buried in his native district of Sanhan without a solemn ceremony, according to the Sky News Arabia broadcaster.

A member of the GPC told Al-Mashhad Al-Yemeni news outlet that the country’s former leader was buried and only five family members attended the ceremony.

Another source of the Yemeni media outlet said that the ceremony took place not in Sanhan, but in Sanaa, which is the capital of the country.

Saleh and the Houthis used to be allies in the struggle against the government headed by President Abd-Rabbu Hadi.

However, in late November, the tensions between the former allies escalated and resulted in clashes that have already claimed lives of hundreds of people, including the ex-president himself.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels accuses Saleh party of supporting Saudi-led coalition

Yemen’s dominant Shiite Houthi rebels on Wednesday accused former President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s party of standing by their foe of Saudi-led coalition, threatening to break up political and military partnership with Saleh.

The move came in a public statement issued by Houthi official media, Al-Masira TV.

This was in response to the recent rejection by Saleh’s party, the General People’s Congress (GPC), over Houthi unilateral appointments in the army, judiciary and ministry of finance.

“Saleh and his party’s recent stance show them up clearly that they are standing by the enemy.

“And based on that, it is not honour for us to continue running the country’s affairs through the partnership with Saleh and his party,” Houthi group said, accusing Saleh of corruption.

On Sunday, Saleh’s GPC party rejected a set of appointments made unilaterally by dominant Houthi rebels a day earlier, in which Houthi group ousted Saleh’s loyalists from top positions in the army, judiciary and the ministry of finance.

“The unilateral decisions violate the partnership agreement between the GPC and Houthi group and are legally non-binding,” the GPC said in the statement posted on the party’s official media outlet almotamar.net.

The action came amid highly growing strife between allies as Houthis seek to strip Saleh from resources of legal power and unilaterally take full control of the country.

Saleh and Houthis, once partners in the coup against internationally recognised President Abdu-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, have recently fallen out with each other.

The Republican Guards in support of Saleh stepped up measures to be ready to confront any developments in the capital Sanaa, which is under control of both Houthi fighters and Saleh’s loyal forces.

Saleh directed the Republican Guards to protect both camps and strictly deal with any Houthi attempt to raid them or come near them.

Yemen has been entangled in civil war since Houthi and Saleh supporters attempted a coup against the internationally recognized Yemeni government of Hadi in September 2014.

In almost two years and a half ago, Saudi Arabia led an Arab coalition forces and intervened in Yemen in March 2015 to return power and the capital Sanaa to Hadi and roll back rebels’ gains.
