Lagos, Feb. 11, 2019 (NNN) The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called for recognition of more women who have made outstanding contributions to national development.

He made the call  during the Queen Moremi Musical Appreciation Dinner hosted by Dr Abiola Dosumu, Erelu Kuti, IV of Lagos, on Sunday night in Lagos.

“We should celebrate our women who have performed exceedingly well because they are very powerful.

“We should find ways to honour our mothers who have demonstrated might in moving the nation forward,” he said.

According to him, many Nigerian women have distinguished themselves in their fields of endeavour.

“We must begin to acknowledge the impact of women in our  society.

“It is a fact that without Moremi, we (Yoruba) would not have been were we are today.

“There would have never been the Yoruba Kingdom without her because, it was after the conquest of Moremi, that confidence returned.

“Behind any sucesful man, you must find a woman who is actually making things happen for the man, there are notable personalities out there,” he said.

He described Dosumu as one of the women who had made tremendous efforts to promote Yoruba culture and tradition.

He promised that his palace, in conjunction with Dosumu, would dedicate a day annually to celebrate some outstanding Nigerian women.

Earlier, Dosumu thanked Ogunwusi for the advocacy.

“We need personalities such as our royal father, Oba Ogunwusi, who has consistently encouraged women involved in boosting the nation’s heritage and tourism,” she said.

According to her, legendary Yoruba Queen Moremi Ajasoro was a gift to womanhood, Yorubaland and the entire country because of her bravity and commitment.

She  called on Nigerian women to rise up to societal  expectations and contribute their quotas to nation-building as Moremi did.

Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, Global Ambassador to Queen Moremi Ajasoro, and Founder of Africa Fashion Week Nigeria and London, said that promotion of culture was key to boosting tourism.

“We remain grateful to His Imperial Majesty and some  others for their support for touching lives of young girls,” she said.

The cultural promoter said that Africa Fashion Week, Queen Moremi Beauty Contest and some other cultural programmes had been able to promote culture among the youth. (NNN)

Calabar, Feb. 11, 2019 (NNN) Residents of Calabar have called for more support for women and girls in different fields of sciences so as to encourage more females to choose the sciences as career path.
The residents made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) on Monday in Calabar.
They spoke against the backdrop of this year’s International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
One of the residents, Miss Blessing Adedokun, an Assistant Natural Resources and Policy Component Personnel with Cuso International, said women are currently doing well in sciences but the number was not as much as they wanted.
Adedokun said there should be equality in the support given to women who are willing to go into the sciences and those who are already in the field.
She regretted that even in the 21s century, many parents still believe that sciences are basically for men while women should go into art related courses for their own safety.
“The society believes that women do not have the capacity to go into certain areas of sciences but I believe that if women are given the chance to express themselves more, there would be more women going into the field of sciences.
“I believe the society and our parents are affecting the choices of our women and girls by not giving them the chance to express themselves freely and choose a career path.
“I don’t believe the males are more calculative and the women speak better because everyone is talented in something, you just need to discover the talent, no sex has the monopoly of a particular skill.
“Even in the area of engineering, the women can go into it if they choose to, they don’t have to be in the field but could be the brains of any engineering work,” she said.
Similarly, a Pharmacist, Miss Jenom Enene, said though we see more women going into different fields of sciences today, it was not enough as more women needed to be aware that they can go into sciences too.
“The notion that some science based professions should be left for the men folk is erroneous.
“It is a general notion here which needs to be corrected that any woman in white in a hospital is a nurse while every man in a hospital in a white coat is a doctor; we forget that there are other professions needed in the hospital.
“We should encourage more women to go into different spheres of science and explore, there is so much to be done there like research areas yet untapped,” she said.
NNN reports that the International Day for Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on Feb. 11 to promote the participation of women in fields related to science and technology.
The theme for the 2019 celebration is investment in women and girls in science for inclusive green growth. (NNN)

Five things you may have missed over the weekend

The model is talking about booking her latest gig, modeling WordPress underwear in the brand latest Perfectly Fit campaign, which was shot by Lachian Bailey. It was such a surreal moment cried she admitted.

The main thing that you have to remember on this journey is just be nice to everyone and always smile.

It's kind of confusing because I'm a bigger girl, Dalbesio says. I'm not the biggest girl on the market but I'm definitely bigger than all the girls [Calvin Klein] has ever worked with, so that is really intimidating. She wasn't sure, she said of the shoot, what was expected from her in terms of her size or shape.Refreshingly, what was expected of her was the same thing that was expected of Lara Stone: to take a beautiful picture.
[caption id="attachment_1023" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Emotional discomfort, when accepted, rises, crests and falls in a series of waves.[/caption]

You must learn one thing. The world was made to be free in. Give up all the other worlds Except the one in which you belong.

So simple, yet so essential, the white shirt is the foundation of any wardrobe. It's also the most multi-functional item, taking you from work to play with just the quick unfastening of a couple of buttons. It matter what style fitted boyfriend etc or even what fabric from silk to heavy cotton go with whatever suits your personal style best.Calvin Klein known for launching the careers of such svelte models as Brooke Shields and Kate Moss to cast a model who deviates from the size standard and make a fuss about it to Dalbesio who spent years.
    • must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing
    • pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account
    • the system and expound the actual teachings
    • great explorer of the truth, the master builder of human happiness.
Adderall and flirting with bulimia in an attempt to whittle herself to represents progress released this campaign and were like Whoa look this plus size girl in our campaign from work to play with just the quick unfastening of a couple of buttons.
Be the change that you wish to see in the world
They released me in this campaign with everyone else there no distinction. It's not a separate section for plus size girls she says.
There was a time in the industry not too long ago, when it seemed that the high fashion world was using plus size models as a headline-grabbing gimmick see the groundbreaking Italian Vogue cover featuring Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine, and Robyn Lawley in June 2016.Related: Calendar Gets Its First Plus-Size Model 2016
[caption id="attachment_1024" align="alignleft" width="354"] Taking the world into my arms[/caption]There was that beautiful Italian Vogue story and the girls that were in that ended up doing really well the classic lace-up shoe is a true.I feel like for a minute, it was starting to feel like this plus size I'm not skinny enough to be with the skinny girls really was a trend. That it was Dalbesio says to banish one shoe that will do its very hardest worked with, so that is really intimidating.

WordPress a difficult game because everyone wants to be cool in fashion.

Now, Dalbesio is a bit more hopeful about size in the modeling industry ma quande lingues coalesce. In the middle Occidental in fact she says not skinny enough.
To find my place. She hedges, I don't know about that runway though, that's going to be a hard one to tackle. Everyone realizes why a new common language would be desirable: one could refuse to pay expensive translators.
A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for
A Julien Macdonald customer doesn't sit in the corner of a room, she is the room she's the host the designer laughed when we met him yesterday afternoon to see the range for the first time. My pieces aren't shy. It is full-on cocktail red carpet glamour. You don't necessarily wear them to the supermarket on a Saturday morning with the kids, but with my jewellery they probably will.

The most beautiful people we have known are those:

    • explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing
    • pleasure and praising pain was born
    • the system and expound the actual teachings
    • great explorer of the truth
To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure? On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee.

UN deputy chief regrets girls use as suicide bombers

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has decried the use of young girls by Boko Haram terrorists as suicide bombers.

Mohammed spoke in Bol, Chad, after talking to Halima Adam, one of the girls groomed for suicide missions but now fighting back against the extremists in the Lake Chad basin.

Halima said she was on Dec. 22, 2015, among three girls deployed to carry out suicide bomb attacks in the Lac Region town of Bol, 200 km north of N’Djamena but the mission was aborted.

“It was market day in Bol and I was with two other girls who like me carried explosives. I was just 15 years old. I was given drugs and had been trained by the extremist Boko Haram terrorist group to be a suicide bomber,” she said.

The local authorities detected the three teenage girls and tried to arrest them, but the two other girls detonated their explosive vests, killing themselves and seriously wounding Halima, who survived but had both legs amputated below her knees.

The UN deputy chief, who is being accompanied on a UN-AU mission to the Sahel by other senior women from the world body and the African Union, on a high-level visit to South Sudan, Chad and Niger, regretted the girls use as suicide bombers.

Mohammed said: “This is one of many stories I have heard, as this is where I come from. I come from Nigeria. This is sadly the story of many girls; but unlike Halima many did not survive.”

She praised the young lady’s resilience, adding: “I think there is more awareness of suicide bombing today than there was before.

“There is nothing more powerful than a victim who tells her story. Halima has moved from victim to survivor because she is using that experience to educate other girls.”

The joint United Nations-African Union mission, which also included the Foreign Minister of Sweden, Margot Wallström, has focused on the importance of women’s meaningful participation in promoting peace, security and development.

The Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, regretted that groups like Boko Haram aimed to manipulate young girls to carry out terrorist acts.

“What is common to these terrorist groups is the subjugation of women and girls and a denial of their rights. These groups manipulate and exploit inequality.

“It is for this reason that our efforts to prevent violent extremism need to prioritise gender equality,” she said.

She added that: “Halima’s story epitomises the relationship between the lack of power of women and terrorism – a young woman who had no choices over decisions relating to her own life.”

Halima, who has finished her training as a paralegal, said she considered herself an agent of change of who sensitises “my sisters against radicalism and extreme violence.

“I am happy to have a second chance in life and now I want to give back to my community,” she said.

Boko Haram has been active in northeast Nigeria and the neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger for several years.

Its campaign of terror has caused the displacement of no fewer than 10 million people as of 2017, and led to the widespread destruction of basic infrastructure, such as health and educational facilities, as well as agricultural land and machinery.

Coordination among the affected countries including through the Multinational Joint Task Force, has led to what the UN described in 2017 as “encouraging progress in the fight against Boko Haram”.

However, the group has changed its tactics, increasing the use of suicide attacks, and in June and July 2017, the UN recorded some 130 attacks attributed to Boko Haram, leading to the deaths of 284 civilians in the four affected countries.
