UK-Africa Summit: Buhari returns to Abuja, meets EU Crisis Management Commissioner Friday

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday returned to Abuja after he participated in the United Kingdom-Africa Investment Summit 2020, in London.

Nigeria News Agency reports that the Nigerian leader was welcomed at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja by top Federal Government functionaries including the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu.

While in London, President Buhari also held bilateral talks with British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, where he sought the cooperation of the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom in the investigation of fugitives from Nigeria finding accommodation in that country.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the UK-Africa Investment Summit 2020.

Buhari said the ongoing anti-corruption war in Nigeria, though slow but painstaking, needed the cooperation of the Agency.

The President also met with his Ghanaian counterpart, Nana Akufo-Addo, and gave more information on why Nigeria’s borders were partially closed.

On time frame for reopening the borders,President Buhari said it would not happen till the final report of a committee set up on the matter was submitted and considered.

“We will get things sorted out. Our farmers, especially those who grow rice, now have a market, and are happy, and we are also concerned about hard drugs and weapons.

”Once the committee comes up with its recommendations, we will sit and consider them,” he said.

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman had in a statement quoted President Akufo-Addo, to have shown understanding of the need for Nigeria to protect her citizens.

The Ghanaian leader, however, pleaded for “an expedited process, because the Nigerian market is significant for certain categories of business people in Ghana.”

President Buhari had also met with a select group of Nigerian Community in the United Kingdom including the current World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua.

Joshua was the cynosure of all eyes during the meeting, for regaining his world championship belt and putting Nigeria “on the world map again like Hogan Bassey.”

The presidential aide stated that Joshua, later presented his belts to the President and pledged to “stand up for Nigeria anytime you need me”.

President Buhari is scheduled to meet with Mr Janez Lenarcic, the European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management on Friday at noon.

Buhari greets President Xi Jinping on Chinese Lunar New Year

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with President Xi Jinping and all citizens of People’s Republic of China home and abroad, as they celebrate the Chinese Lunar Year from Jan. 25.

Buhari, in a formal letter addressed to the Chinese leader, and made available to State House correspondents by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Tuesday, recounted the strides being taken in Nigeria-China relations.

In the letter, the Nigerian leader observed that Nigeria and China had discovered “new opportunities for mutual benefits”.

Below is full text of the letter:

“As celebrations of the Chinese Year of the Rat by Chinese community in Nigeria and across the world commence on 25th January this year, on behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest and most sincere greetings and wishes to you and the Chinese people for a promising and auspicious Lunar New Year.

“In the past year, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China was warmly celebrated.

“The tremendous achievements made by the Chinese people fully demonstrate that China has found the successful development path that fits its national reality.

“The past year has also been a productive one for China-Nigeria relations. The all-round, wide-ranging and high-quality bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and China has been further intensified, and our belief in the One China policy re-affirmed.

“There is a new impetus in Nigeria-China relations and we have new opportunities for mutual benefits.

“I note that 2020 marks the year China will finish building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and the final year of the 13th Five-Year Plan.

“We are delighted that China is making positive progress, setting a good example for developing countries to pursue their own development goals.

“This year is also the 20th anniversary of Forum for China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). We are delighted to see that FOCAC has become an effective platform between Nigeria and China and achieved major progress of boosting concrete trade and cooperation and benefiting people of both countries.

“I understand that the rat is the first sign from the cycle of Chinese Astrology that makes 2020 a year of new beginnings and renewals.

“I would like to take this as a new outset to work with China hand in hand to develop the Belt and Road Initiative, further implement the outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit, and promote the Nigeria-China strategic partnership to a new level.

“While wishing that the Year of the Rat witnesses the common development of our two countries and a better life of our peoples, please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest esteem and personal regards.

    “Once again, Happy New Year!’’

Nigeria’s Border Closure: Buhari meets Ghanaian President, Akufo-Addo in London, offers more information

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in London held a bilateral meeting with his Ghanaian counterpart, Nana Akufo-Addo, and gave more information on why Nigeria’s borders were partially closed.

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, in a statement in Abuja, said the meeting was held at the sidelines of UK-Africa Investment Summit 2020.

The Nigerian leader stated that the partial closure of the borders were not solely because food products, particularly rice, were being smuggled into Nigeria, but also because arms and ammunition, as well as hard drugs were being ferried into Nigeria.

The Nigerian Leader said he could not keep his eyes open, and watch youths being destroyed through cheap hard drugs, and compromised security caused by unbridled influx of small arms.

“When most of the vehicles carrying rice and other food products through our land borders are intercepted, you find cheap hard drugs, and small arms, under the food products. This has terrible consequences for any country,” he said.

He said it was regrettable that the partial border closure was having “negative economic impact on our neighbours,” but added that “we cannot leave our country, particularly the youths, endangered.”

According to him, the Sahel region is awash with small arms, which accounts for severe security challenges in Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria.

“We are in fact the biggest victims,” he lamented.

On time frame for reopening the borders, President Buhari said it would not happen till the final report of a committee set up on the matter was submitted and considered.

“We will get things sorted out. Our farmers, especially those who grow rice, now have a market, and are happy, and we are also concerned about hard drugs and weapons.

”Once the committee comes up with its recommendations, we will sit and consider them,” he said.

Buhari meets UK PM, seeks extradition of fugitives to answer corruption charges

President Muhammadu Buhari has sought the cooperation of the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom in the investigation of fugitives from Nigeria finding accommodation in that country.

Mr Femi Adesina, the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, in a statement in Abuja, said the Nigerian leader made the call during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London on Monday.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the UK-Africa Investment Summit 2020.

Buhari said the ongoing anti-corruption war in Nigeria, though slow but painstaking, needed the cooperation of the Agency.

Nigerian News Agency reports that former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and other Nigerian fugitives in the UK had fled into exile since 2015 when the current administration of Buhari came on board.

It would be recalled that in 2017, a Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Abdulazeez Anka, had ordered the final forfeiture of N7.6 billion alleged loot recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from Alison-Madueke.

Buhari also updated Johnson on the positive developments in Nigeria in different areas of national endeavour.

He told Johnson of strides in agriculture, leading almost to self-sufficiency in rice and other grains, which is saving the country billions in foreign exchange, which are now deployed to other areas of development.

On the war against insurgency, the President said things were a lot better, with the disabuse of the minds of the people on the true philosophy of Boko Haram.

He said the though there were challenges in the area of resettling displaced people, it was being tackled frontally.

“We have a long history with the British military, and we are collaborating,” Buhari added.

On Climate change, the President said it was a challenge to Nigeria and neighbouring African countries, especially with the shrinkage of the Lake Chad.

He also said the country was making progress on education, particularly that of the girl child.

In his remarks, Johnson thanked Buhari for being “a regional leader who gives strong encouragement to the West”.

He congratulated him on jobs being created through agriculture, and urged him to do more.

He equally lauded the Nigerian President for what he called the “social and economic benefits” that had accrued to the country since 2015.

Johnson pledged that the necessary hand of fellowship would be extended to Nigeria on its war against corruption, through the National Crime Agency.

He pledged to cooperate with Nigeria and other African countries in the inter-basin water transfer, which could solve the Lake Chad problem, and enhance security in the sub-region.

On the Commonwealth Free Trade Area, the Prime Minister applauded the idea and pledged a careful consideration.

He charged the Nigerian leader to keep the national autonomy of his country intact, noting that in the future, Nigeria would not just be a continental power but an international power.
