    Abduction

Port Harcourt, Dec. 19, 2018 (NNN) The police and other security agencies in Rivers, have been enjoined to rescue Bishop Clement Ekpeye of Ahoada Diocese of the Anglican Communion,  who was abducted on Tuesday by unknown persons.

A body named, Tonye Cole Campaign Organisation (TCCO), a political group with sympathy for the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the call in a statement issued in Port Harcourt.

The statement was signed by Mr Ogbonna Nwuke, the TCCO Spokesperson in Rivers.

It said: “we urge the Rivers State Police Command and other security agencies to do the best that they can to rescue him.

“We are however, disturbed that under the watch of this government, kidnapping has degenerated so low that a Man of God who has dedicated his life to the service of mankind can be so brutally assaulted by thugs.

The group stated that the abductors were acting on the orders of their “godfathers.’’

“We have learnt that the priest was taken from his residence, beaten and forced into his car by the hoodlums who took him to an unknown destination.

“We recall that the gentle and respectable priest whose whereabouts are yet unknown was received, and prayed with Pastor Tonye Patrick Cole, flag bearer of the APC when he visited the area.

“We have also learnt that since Pastor Cole visited the area, the priest has received threats from persons at large,” TCCO stated.

The group said it had joined Christians and other Nigerians to pray for the safety and immediate return of Ekpeye to his loved ones and the church,

“Despite efforts by security agencies to keep the state safe, highly unsavory elements disguised as leaders have persisted in their quest to create fear and insecurity.

“Our people are not game to be hunted down and killed neither are they slaves to be sold or exchanged for ransom.

“Jobs and prosperity cannot be built on the foundations of insecurity. Accordingly, we are urging all men and women of goodwill to rise up against this terror in Rivers State.

“Enough of this malaise,’’ the group added. (NNN)

204 house hold IDPs in Plateau return to ancestral homes

    Returnees

    By Peter Amine

Jos, Dec.20, 2018 (NNN) The first batch of 204 households of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge at Geosciences IDP Camp Bukuru in Plateau have returned to their ancestral homes.

Addressing IDPs before their departure from the camp, Maj.- Gen. Augustine Agundu, Commander of Special Task Force (STF) said that all security arrangements were in place for their safe return.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) reports that the returnees are from Kukur, Kuzen and Kura falls communities all in Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Government.

The commander said that the first batch to return would be those who left their homes for fear of being attacked but their houses were not destroyed.

“Soldiers have been deployed in all your villages. The security of your villages or homes is guaranteed.

“Not like that of before. Whoever tries to disturb you will have us to contend with.

“Go and rest peacefully in your homes; those who want to go to the farms should go to their farms, “he said.

He said that food had been prepared by caterers for the IDPs to eat on arrival to their homes.

The commander said that although free medical services were conducted before their departure, another one would hold on Friday in their villages.

According to him, medical personnel are on ground in the villages to ensure that the returnees are healthy to carry on with their lives.

“With that, gradually I believe we will now be settling down in our homes.

“Those people whom their houses have been destroyed, I will disturb the state government until they give them building materials to rebuild.

“They will also bring farming equipment for those that are farmers.

“Gradually, the schools too will be rebuilt so that our children will go back to school.”

Agundu, however, advised the returnees to behave well so that“ by the grace of God“, the trouble that brought them to IDP would not happen again.

Mr Richard Tokma, Acting Secretary to the Government of Plateau, in his remarks, said that the state government was happy to see the people return to their homes and live normal lives.

Tokma said that since the submission of the report of the Committee on Resettlement of IDPs, Gov. Simon Lalong had been having sleepless night to ensure that the IDPs return home.

“The governor has been anxious to see that IDPs return to their places of abode,’’ he said.

He commended the security agencies for ensuring that adequate security was provided before facilitating the return of IDPs.

“I think that what government has done is to ensure that when the people return, they are comfortable.

“What government is going to do now is to ensure that those whose houses were destroyed will be given materials to rebuild their houses.Even farm implements will be given to them for their farms.”

Mr Francis Chong, the Camp Coordinator, said that over 1,000 households were taking refuge in the camp.

Chong said that the people were displaced from 18 communities from two local governments, out of which three communities of 204 households were returning home.

The camp coordinator appealed to the state government to help the IDPs with roofing materials to rebuild their homes.

NNN reports that the returnees were given assorted food and other materials such as blankets, mats, some cooking utensils. (NNN)

Lagos, Dec. 21, 2018 (NNN) Rt. Rev. Humphrey Olumakaiye, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos, (Anglican Communion), has urged Nigerians to pray, ceaselessly, for leaders to enable them overcome the challenges of leadership.

Olumakaiye, in his Christmas message on Friday in Lagos urged Christians to use the festive season to reconcile with their creator and move closer to God.

The cleric, who expressed optimism in the future of the country, said that the challenges the country was facing would soon end, urged Christians to remain committed, prayerful and focused.

He said:”Jesus Christ was born at the time when ignorance, superstition, greed, hatred and hypocrisy prevailed upon the land. Purity was forgotten and morality was neglected.

“A Saviour was needed to rescue us from difficult and dangerous situation, even as we also have restlessness, economic woes, wars, unemployment and corruption in our Country today.

“Our country should continue to pray for leaders with this kind of attributes at this season of Christmas and beyond. We cannot afford to have anyone lead us without these attributes.

“Asked Christians, we must do things with the fear of God as we use this time of Christmas to return to God and worship Him in Spirit and in truth.

“We should not be confused because confusion is associated with fear. Let us allow God to lead us. The God that has brought us this far in our dear country, Nigeria is saying, Fear Not.

He also urged Nigerians to remain steadfast and pray for continued peace and unity of the country.

“Consequently, I urge all of us to avoid anything that can result into disaster and calamity and also disorderliness and go all out for peace by imbibing tolerance, forgiveness and forbearance.

“I pray that as we celebrate Christmas, your hearts and homes will be filled with all of the joys the festive season brings. Nothing will be able to destroy your joy.

“He will take us farther than here in peace. God will take care of the election and make everyone bow to His authority.

Kazaure (Jigawa), Dec. 27, (NNN) The Kazaure Emirate Council’s Zakat Committee in Jigawa has distributed grains worth N4.6 million to 2,562 indigent people in the emirate, the News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) reports.

Alhaji Nasiru Lawan, spokesman of the council told NNN in Kazaure on Thursday that beneficiaries cut across the four local government areas of Kazaure, Roni, Gwiwa and Yankwashi.

Lawan said that the grains distributed to the needy included rice, sorghum and millet.

“The farm produce, including millet, rice and sorghum, were recently distributed to the needy by the Zakat Committee chaired by Alhaji Bala Muhammed.

“Grains zakat is an annual exercise in which farmers, who harvest a certain quantity of grains, are expected to give part of the grains to the downtrodden.

“The produce are normally stocked at the residence of either the ward head or the village head, and the committee will later go round and distribute them to the needy in that area,” he said.

According to him, distribution of the farm produce zakat was to complement governments efforts toward poverty alleviation.

Lawan therefore called on large scale farmers and other wealthy individuals to fear God and ensure they give out zakat as at when due.

NNN reports that zakat, which is one of the five pillars of Islam, is also paid in cash and on certain number of livestock.

It is obligatory for every Muslims who is financially buoyant to pay zakat to the needy to purify his wealth and seek blessings from Allah. (NNN)

    By Muhammad Nasir Bashir
Dutse, Dec. 29, 2018 (NNN) The Jigawa State Government says it has sponsored and conducted the wedding of 270 selected orphaned girls in the state.

Malam Mustspha Saleh, Special Adviser to Jigawa governor, Muhammad Badaru, disclosed this on Saturday in Dutse during the exercise in Dutse.

Saleh said that 10 orphaned girls were selected from each of the 27 Local Government Areas of the state.

“Ten beneficiaries were selected from each of the 27 wards of the state by the committee shouldered with the responsibilities of selecting and screening eligible beneficiaries.

“And they selected based on merit, not political affiliation or any other thing,” he said.

Saleh further disclosed that more than N93 million was spent by the state government to sponsor the wedding, including the provision of complete house furniture to the beneficiaries.

According to him, the gesture is part of the government’s effort to support the poor and vulnerable in the state.

Saleh added that medical tests, including HIV/AIDS test, were conducted on the couples in order to ascertain their genuine health status before the marriage.

“We decided to conduct the medical test because it was the best way to engender trust in the minds of the couples.

“The screening conducted had been a success story, as none of the couples was found to be carrying diseases that will disqualify him from benefitting from this kind gesture.

“And this is because joining the couples in suspicious circumstances, will make them distrust each other which might end up destroying the relation,” Saleh said.

In her remarks, the wife of state governor, Hajiya Asma’u Badaru, who distributed furniture and other items to the beneficiaries, urged them to live in peace with their respective husbands.

According to her, living in peace would make the union to last long.

She also reminded the couples of the need to imbibe the fear of Allah, in dealing with their marriage.

Badaru added that they would be made to account for what they did in the hereafter.
“The mass wedding was consummated on the high expectation and commitment, and I hope that it will last for eternity,” she said.

Also commenting, the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Nuhu Muhammad, urged the grooms to treat their wives kindly.

Muhammad reminded them that Islam forbids beating, or abusing marriage partners on the premise that the conjugal union was consummated to instill happiness, love and mutual trust, in the minds of each other.

“We call on the couples to imbibe the spirit of fairness as ordained by Islam.
“In Islam nothing is ambiguous on how a husband and wife should live together devoid of unnecessary vendetta,” the emir said.

He also advised the husbands to support wives to further both their Islamic and western education.

NNN reports that each of the 270 brides was given bed, mattress, wardrobe, cushions chairs, pillows, bed sheets, cottons, leather rugs, among other things.

Some of the beneficiaries, Nasiba Tata, Sadiya Bala and Jamila Bello, commended the Jigawa government for the gesture and promised to live in peace with their husbands. (NNN)
